Employing aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide (70%) as an inexpensive reagent a useful methodology for the regioselective and chemoselective deprotection of terminal acetonide groups in aqueous medium is developed. A variety of acetonide derivatives on reaction with aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide in water:tert-butanol (1:1) furnish the corresponding acetonide deprotected diols in good yields. A large number of acid labile protecting functional groups and other functional moieties were found to be unaffected under the conditions employed for the present deprotection. This method has been successfully applied to sugar derivatives.

We study the complexation of nontoxic, native poly(propyl ether imine) dendrimers with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The interaction was monitored by measuring the quenching of inherent fluorescence of the dendrimer. The dendrimer-nanotube binding also resulted in the increased electrical resistance of the hole doped SWNT, due to charge-transfer interaction between dendrimer and nanotube. This charge-transfer interaction was further corroborated by observing a shift in frequency of the tangential Raman modes of SWNT. We also report the effect of acidic and neutral pH conditions on the binding affinities. Experimental studies were supplemented by all atom molecular dynamics simulations to provide a microscopic picture of the dendrimer-nanotube complex. The complexation was achieved through charge transfer and hydrophobic interactions, aided by multitude of oxygen, nitrogen, and n-propyl moieties of the dendrimer. The photorearrangement of benzyl phenyl ethers and methyl phenoxyacetates was investigated in methanol and in complexes with cyclodextrin in both the solid state and aqueous solutions. Irradiation in cyclodextrin media leads to a large change in product distribution with a very significant ortho selectivity different from that found in methanol where the reaction is non-selective. For meta-substituted ethers and phenoxyacetates, an impressive regioselectivity between the two ortho-rearranged isomers is observed and this is significantly enhanced by increasing the substituent chain length which acts as a spacer to induce a tight fit between the host and the guest. The observed results are rationalized on the basis of specific orientations of the unsubstituted and meta-substituted ethers and phenoxyacetates in the cyclodextrin cavity.

EcoP15I DNA methyltransferase recognizes the sequence 5'-CAGCAG-3' and transfers a methyl group to N-6 of the second adenine residue in the recognition sequence. All N-6 adenine methyltransferases contain two highly conserved sequences, FxGxG (motif I), postulated to form part of the S-adenosyl-L-methionine binding site and (D/N/S)PP(Y/F) (motif IV) involved in catalysis. We have altered the second glycine residue in motif I to arginine and serine, and substituted tyrosine in motif IV with tryptophan in EcoP15I DNA methyltransferase, using site-directed mutagenesis. The mutant enzymes were overexpressed, purified and characterized by biochemical methods. The mutations in motif I completely abolished AdoMet binding but left target DNA recognition unaltered. Although the mutation in motif IV resulted in loss of enzyme activity, we observed enhanced crosslinking of S-adenosyl-L-methionine and DNA. This implies that DNA and AdoMet binding sites are close to motif IV. Taken together, these results reinforce the importance of motif I in AdoMet binding and motif IV in catalysis. Additionally, limited proteolysis and UV crosslinking experiments with EcoP15I DNA methyltransferase imply that DNA binds in a cleft formed by two domains in the protein. Methylation protection analysis provides evidence for the fact that EcoP15I DNA MTase makes contacts in the major groove of its substrate DNA. Interestingly, hypermethylation of the guanine residue next to the target adenine residue indicates that the protein probably flips out the target adenine residue. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited

Five tartrate-amine complexes have been studied in terms of crystal packing and hydrogen bonding frameworks. The salts are 3-bromoanilinium-L-monohydrogen tartrate 1, 3-fluoroanilinium-D-dibenzoylmonohydrogen tartrate 2, 1-nonylium-D-dibenzoylmonohydrogen tartrate 3, 1 -decylium-D-dibenzoylmonohydrogen tartrate 4, and 1,4-diaminobutanium-D-dibenzoyl tartrate trihydrate 5. The results indicate that there are no halogen-halogen interactions in the haloaromatic-tartrate complexes. The anionic framework allows accomodation of ammonium ions that bear alkyl chain residues of variable lengths. The long chain amines in these structures remain disordered while the short chain amines form multidirectional hydrogen bonds on either side.

The solution- and melt-phase photochemistry of four trans-benzylidene-d,l-piperitones (1) has been investigated under a variety of conditions. The 1 undergo trans reversible cis isomerization to establish a quasi photostationary state. Further irradiation leads to 2 via oxidative ring closure. Conspicuously absent are dimers (obtained upon irradiation of the neat crystals) and the plausible Norrish Type II photoproducts, 3. Although 1c yields 2c, no evidence for the alternative cyclization route to 2a (requiring loss of HCl) has been observed. Rationalizations for the transformations are presented. The structure of 2b has been determined unambiguously from X-ray crystallographic analysis.

The photodimerizations of coumarin and eight of its derivatives are found to proceed selectively in solid inclusion complexes with beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins (beta- and gamma-CD). The distribution of photodimers from these complexes is compared with those from the neat coumarin solids and their solutions in a variety of solvents. By assuming that the stereochemistry of the dimers reflects the packing arrangements of their precursors in the CD complexes, several hypotheses concering the locations and arrangements of the coumarins in the host toruses have been made. The stoichiometries of the complexes have been assigned on the basis of the presence or absence of photodimers and from NMR integration ratios of characteristic coumarin and saccharide protons. The relative orientations of substituted coumarins within a complex are inferred from the stereochemistry of the photodimers. Depending upon the substitution pattern of the coumarin molecules and the type of CD employed, complexes whose guest-host stoichiometries are 1:1, 2:1, and 2:2 have been identified. In several instances, dimers not available from irradiation of neat solid coumarins or their solutions have been obtained from the CD complexes.

The Cu atoms in aquabis(tert-butyl acetoacetato)copper(II),[Cu(C8H13O3)(2)(H2O)], and bis(dipivaloylmethanido)copper(II), [Cu(C11H19O2)(2)], adopt square-pyramidal and planar conformations, respectively, with average Cu--O distances of 1.933 Angstrom in the former (not including the water ligand) and 1.892 Angstrom in the latter. It is interesting to note that the lability of the tert-butyl and methyl groups in both structures, which renders even the location of the terminal C atoms difficult, is reduced at T = 130 K, enabling location of all the protons in the difference Fourier map.

Nanometre-sized powders of SrTiO3 were prepared at 70-100 degrees C by the wet-chemical method of gel to crystallite (G-C) conversion. The crystallite sizes obtained were in the range 5-13 nm, as estimated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. The photocatalytic activities of these powders in the mineralization of phenol were evaluated in comparison with Degussa P25 (TiO2). The maximum photocatalytic activity was observed for powders annealed in the range 1100-1300 degrees C. The optical spectra of the particle suspensions in water showed broadened absorption around the band gap region, together with the appearance of an absorption maximum in the UV region. The effect of inorganic oxidizing species as electron scavengers on the rate of the photocatalytic degradation of phenol was studied. The influence of bulk and surface defects, which participate in the charge transfer process during photocatalysis, was investigated systematically.
