We report results from boron, carbon and oxygen stable isotope analyses of faulted and veined rocks recovered by scientific ocean drilling during ODP Leg 180 in the western Woodlark Basin, off Papua New Guinea. In this area of active continental extension, crustal break-up and incipient seafloor spreading, a shallow-dipping, seismically active detachment fault accommodates strain, defining a zone of mylonites and cataclasites, vein formation and fluid infiltration. Syntectonic microstructures and vein-fill mineralogy suggest frictional heating during slip during extension and exhumation of Moresby Seamount. Low carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of calcite veins indicate precipitation from hydrothermal fluids (delta13C PDB down to -17?; delta18O PDB down to -22?) formed by both dehydration and decarbonation. Boron contents are low (<7 ppm), indicating high-grade metamorphic source rock for the fluids. Some of the delta11B signatures (17-35?; parent solutions to calcite vein fills) are low when compared to deep-seated waters in other tectonic environments, likely reflecting preferential loss of 11B during low-grade metamorphism at depth. Pervasive devolatilization and flux of CO2-rich fluids are evident from similar vein cement geochemistry in the detachment fault zone and splays further updip. Multiple rupture-and-healing history of the veins suggests that precipitation may be an important player in fluid pressure evolution and, hence, seismogenic fault movement.

Structure of mesoplankton and distribution of dissolved ammonia in the vicinity of an isolated seamount of the Louisville Ridge in the subantarctic zone of the Pacific Ocean was studied using data obtained in January 1985 in an area 20 x 30 nm. There were areas with both high (20-25 to 139 g/m**2 in the 0-200 m layer) and low biomass values (<10 g/m**2) of mesoplankton. In the areas with high biomass, a single species Calanus tonsus was strongly dominant (>80% of biomass); its population was relatively mature in seasonal terms, with relatively high percentage of individuals containing fat inclusions. Stations with high mesoplankton biomass also had relatively high concentrations of dissolved ammonia. Presence of plankton-rich areas corre¬lated with presence of a quasi-steady-state topographic eddy. Lifetimes of these nonuniformities in the structure of mesoplankton are estimated as 10-30 days.

Measurements of winter balance (bw) and summer balance (bs) have been carried out at Storbreen since 1949. Here we apply a simple mass balance model to study the climate sensitivity and to reconstruct the mass balance series prior to 1949. The model is calibrated and validated with data from an automatic weather station (AWS) operating in the ablation zone of Storbreen since 2001. Regression analysis revealed that bw was best modelled using precipitation data southwest of the glacier. Results from the model compared well with reported mass balance values for the period 1949-2006, obtained correlations (r) for bw and bs varied between 0.83 and 0.87 depending on model set up. Reconstruction of the mass balance series for the period 1924/1925-1948/1949 suggested a cumulative mass deficit of c. 30 m w.e. mainly due to highly negative summer balances, but also lower bw than the average for 1949-2006. Calculated change in specific mass balance for a ±1°C change in air temperature was ±0.55 m w.e., whereas a ±10 % increase in precipitation represented a change of ± 0.20 m w.e. Model results further indicated that for a 2°C warming, the ablation season will be extended by c. 30 days and that the period of ice melt at the AWS location will increase from c. 40 to c. 80 days.

Several meters of unconsolidated hydrothermal sediment were recovered from the Snake Pit hydrothermal field during ODP Leg 106. Polymetallic sulfides comprise most of the sediment with minor fragments of massive sulfide, organic debris, clay minerals, and fresh glass shards. Trace element and Sr-isotope contents of hydrothermal clays and sulfides from Holes 649B and 649G indicate that these minerals precipitated from a mixed hydrothermal fluid-seawater solution. Evaluation of the REE mineral data and the Snake Pit hydrothermal fluids shows that the REE distribution coefficients between the hydrothermal fluids and clay-sulfide mixes range from 100-500. This indicates that hydrothermal fluids originating in the root-zone of the Snake Pit hydrothermal system may be modified by the precipitation of hydrothermal minerals, either in the shallow subsurface or within chimney structures. Contrasting REE profiles of clay-sulfide aggregates and massive sulfides from Holes 649B and 649G may be accounted for by spatial and/or temporal variations in redox conditions in the plumbing system.

Data on the zooplankton community structure, gut evacuation rate and carbon content of zooplankton faecal pellets were used for assessing the contribution of zooplankton to vertical carbon fluxes in the White and Kara Seas. The results revealed strong regional and seasonal variations of pellet carbon input related to differences in structure and dynamics of the zooplankton communities in the regions studied. In the deep regions of the White Sea, maximum daily pellet carbon flux from the 0-50 m layer was observed in the spring. It reached 98 mg Corg m-2 day-1 and coincided with a strong predominance of the large arctic herbivorous copepod Calanus glacialis in the surface layers. In summer and fall, it decreased by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude due to migration of this copepod to its overwintering depths. In contrast, in the shallow coastal regions, the pellet production was low in spring, gradually increased during summer and reached its maximum of 138 mg Corg m-2 day-1 by late summer to beginning of autumn. Such a seasonal pattern was in accordance with the seasonal variation of abundance of major pellet producers, the small boreal copepods Acartia bifilosa, Centropages hamatus, and Temora longicornis. In the estuarine zone of the Kara Sea, the pellet flux was mostly formed by pellets of brackish-water omnivorous copepods. It varied from 35 mg Corg m-2 day-1 in 1997 to 96 mg Corg m-2 day-1 in 1999. In the central Kara Sea with its typical marine community, the daily flux reached 125 mg Corg m-2 day-1 in summer. The results of our calculations indicate that both in the White and Kara seas zooplankton pellet carbon contributes up to 30 % to the total carbon flux during particular seasons.

The analysis of radiolarians from Japan Sea subsurface sediments recovered during Leg 128 of the Ocean Drilling Program reveals that a warm-water assemblage similar to that of the North Pacific was replaced by unique post-middle Miocene faunas probably as a result of the restriction of Oceanographic circulation. The modern fauna was gradually established only in the Pleistocene. No attempt was made to establish the radiolarian zonation because of low species diversity and the absence of generally recognized index forms in the North Pacific. In the diagenetically altered quartz section, however, a radiolarian assemblage correlative to the middle Miocene Cyrtocapsella tetrapera Zone of western Honshu was identified from Hole 799B.

Leg 164 of the Ocean Drilling Program was designed to investigate the occurrence of gas hydrate in the sedimentary section beneath the Blake Ridge on the southeastern continental margin of North America. Sites 994, 995, and 997 were drilled on the Blake Ridge to refine our understanding of the in situ characteristics of natural gas hydrate. Because gas hydrate is unstable at surface pressure and temperature conditions, a major emphasis was placed on the downhole logging program to determine the in situ physical properties of the gas hydrate-bearing sediments. Downhole logging tool strings deployed on Leg 164 included the Schlumberger quad-combination tool (NGT, LSS/SDT, DIT, CNT-G, HLDT), the Formation MicroScanner (FMS), and the Geochemical Combination Tool (GST). Electrical resistivity (DIT) and acoustic transit-time (LSS/SDT) downhole logs from Sites 994, 995, and 997 indicate the presence of gas hydrate in the depth interval between 185 and 450 mbsf on the Blake Ridge. Electrical resistivity log calculations suggest that the gas hydrate-bearing sedimentary section on the Blake Ridge may contain between 2 and 11 percent bulk volume (vol%) gas hydrate. We have determined that the log-inferred gas hydrates and underlying free-gas accumulations on the Blake Ridge may contain as much as 57 trillion m**3 of gas.

The Mariana arc-trench system, the easternmost of a series of backarc basins and intervening remnant arcs that form the eastern edge of the Philippine Sea Plate, is a well-known example of an intraoceanic convergence zone. Its evolution has been studied by numerous investigators over nearly two decades (e.g., Kang, 1971; Uyeda and Kanamori, 1979; LaTraille and Hussong, 1980; Fryer and Hussong, 1981; Mrosowski et al., 1982; Hussong and Uyeda, 1981; Bloomer and Hawkins, 1983; Karig and Ranken, 1983; McCabe and Uyeda, 1983; Hsui and Youngquist, 1985; Fryer and Fryer, 1987; Johnson and Fryer, 1988; Johnson and Fryer, 1989; Johnson et al., 1991). The Mariana forearc has undergone extensive vertical uplift and subsidence in response to seamount collision, to tensional and rotational fracturing associated with adjustments to plate subduction, and to changes in the configuration of the arc (Hussong and Uyeda, 1981; Fryer et al., 1985). Serpentine seamounts, up to 2500 m high and 30 km in diameter, occur in a broad zone along the outer-arc high (Fryer et al., 1985; Fryer and Fryer, 1987). These seamounts may be horsts of serpentinized ultramafic rocks or may have been formed by the extrusion of serpentine muds. Conical Seamount, one of these serpentine seamounts, is located within this broad zone of forearc seamounts, about 80 km from the trench axis, at about 19°30'N. The seamount is approximately 20 km in diameter and rises 1500 m above the surrounding seafloor. Alvin submersible, R/V Sonne bottom photography, seismic reflection, and SeaMARC II studies indicate that the surface of this seamount is composed of unconsolidated serpentine muds that contain clasts of serpentinized ultramafic and metamorphosed mafic rocks, and authigenic carbonate and silicate minerals (Saboda et al., 1987; Haggerty, 1987; Fryer et al., 1990; Saboda, 1991). During Leg 125, three sites were drilled (two flank sites and one summit site) on Conical Seamount to investigate the origin and evolution of the seamount. Site 778 (19°29.93'N, 146°39.94'E) is located in the midflank region of the southern quadrant of Conical Seamount at a depth of 3913.7 meters below sea level (mbsl) (Fig. 2). This site is located in the center of a major region of serpentine flows (Fryer et al., 1985, 1990). Site 779 (19°30.75'N, 146°41.75'E), about 3.5 km northeast of Site 778, is located approximately in the midflank region of the southeast quadrant of Conical Seamount, at a depth of 3947.2 mbsl. This area is mantled by a pelagic sediment cover, overlying exposures of unconsolidated serpentine muds that contain serpentinized clasts of mafic and ultramafic rocks (Fryer et al., 1985, 1990). Site 780 (19°32.5'N, 146°39.2'E) is located on the western side of Conical Seamount near the summit, at a depth of 3083.4 mbsl. This area is only partly sediment covered and lies near active venting fields where chimney structures are forming (Fryer et al., 1990).

Studies were carried out in the northeastern Sea of Okhotsk, in the zone of interaction of the West Kamchatka and Compensating Currents at the beginning of spring seasonal succession from March 23 to April 14,1998. Samples for analysis of pigmentary and species compositions of phytoplankton were taken from the sea surface layer, depth 0.5 m. To reduce influence of micropatchiness on phytoplankon distribution at each station subsamples 0.7-1 l were collected every 50-100 m. These subsamples were used to make integral samples 4.5-8.0 l. Phytoplankton biomass and concentration of chlorophyll a varied from 18.7 to 490.9 mg/m**3 and from 0.129 to 2.422 mg/m**3, respectively. Total concentration of phytoplankton pigments varied from 0.622 to 6.679 mg/m**3. In samples studied 51 species of microalgae from 5 orders were found. In terms of the number of species, Bacillariophyta (31 species) and Dinophyta (15 species) prevailed. Diatomaceous algae make up more than 80% of the total phytoplankton biomass in waters of the Compensating Current, from 50 to 80% in intermediate waters, and less than 50% in waters of the West Kamchatka Current. Phytoplankton populations consisting primarily of diatoms were characterized by very low chlorophyll a to biomass ratio (0.1 %). It is three times lower than the ratio observed in phytoplankton populations that were close by species composition and size composition in this area in the late April-early May 1996.

A suite of conjugate pore fluid and sediment samples were collected during Leg 169 of the ODP from within the clastic sedimentary sequences which host massive sulphides at Central Hill, Escanaba Trough (ODP Site 1038). We report the alkali element and boron, and Li and B isotope data for these samples. Relative to a reference site (Site 1037) located outside the zone of high heat flow, pore fluids from Site 1038 show a wide variation in Cl (300-800 mM), and have far higher concentrations of Li (up to 6.2 mM), B (up to 9.7 mM), Cs (up to 5.0 mM), and Rb (up to 97 mM). We show that the pore fluids are derived from hydrothermal circulation that has extended into the basement oceanic crust, with input of the alkali elements and B as the rising hydrothermal fluids interact geochemically with the overlying clastic sediments. There is, however, no marked depletion of these elements in the conjugate sediments, suggesting that there has been advective transport of fluids away from the primary hydrothermal reaction site. This is supported by modelling of the Li and B isotope systematics of the pore fluids, which shows that they record extensive formation of secondary minerals during cooling of the fluids from ~350 to ~20ºC. Precipitation of metal-rich sulphides would have occurred prior to the formation of these minerals, thus, the pore fluid Li and B isotope data can place important constraints on the locus of sulphide deposition beneath the seafloor at Escanaba.

The age of the subducting Nazca Plate off Chile increases northwards from 0 Ma at the Chile Triple Junction (46°S) to 37 Ma at the latitude of Valparaíso (32°S). Age-related variations in the thermal state of the subducting plate impact on (a) the water influx to the subduction zone, as well as on (b) the volumes of water that are released under the continental forearc or, alternatively, carried beyond the arc. Southern Central Chile is an ideal setting to study this effect, because other factors for the subduction zone water budget appear constant. We determine the water influx by calculating the crustal water uptake and by modeling the upper mantle serpentinization at the outer rise of the Chile Trench. The water release under forearc and arc is determined by coupling FEM thermal models of the subducting plate with stability fields of water-releasing mineral reactions for upper and lower crust and hydrated mantle. Results show that both the influx of water stored in, and the outflux of water released from upper crust, lower crust and mantle vary drastically over segment boundaries. In particular, the oldest and coldest segments carry roughly twice as much water into the subduction zone as the youngest and hottest segments, but their release flux to the forearc is only about one fourth of the latter. This high variability over a subduction zone of < 1500 km length shows that it is insufficient to consider subduction zones as uniform entities in global estimates of subduction zone fluxes.
