Possible drawbacks of microreactors are inefficient reactant mixing and the clogging of microchannels when solid-forming reactions are carried out or solid (catalysts) suspensions are used. Ultrasonic irradiation has been successfully implemented for solving these problems in microreactor configurations ranging from capillaries immersed in ultrasonic baths to devices with miniaturized piezoelectric transducers. Moving forward in process intensification and sustainable development, the acoustic energy implementation requires a strategy to optimize the microreactor from an ultrasound viewpoint during its design. In this work, we present a simple analytical model that can be used as a guide to achieving a proper acoustic design of stacked microreactors. An example of this methodology was demonstrated through finite element analysis and it was compared with an experimental study found in the literature.

High intensity ultrasound can be used for the production of novel nanomaterials, including metal oxides. According to previous works in this field, the most notable effects are consequence of acoustic cavitation. In this context, we have studied the preparation of different materials in the presence of ultrasound, including N-doped TiO2 nanopowder, NiTiO3 nanorods and MnOx thin films. Ultrasound did not show a significant effect in all the cases. Exclusively for NiTiO3 nanorods a reduction of the final particle size occurs upon ultrasonic irradiation. From these results, it can be concluded that the ultrasound irradiation does not always play a key role during the synthesis of metal oxides. The effects seem to be particularly relevant in those cases where mass transport is highly hindered and in those procedures that require the rupture of nanoparticle aggregates to obtain a homogenous dispersion.

Biomechanics is often defined as ‘mechanics applied to biology’. Due to the variety and complexity of the behaviour of biological structures and materials, biomechanics is better defined as the development, extension and application of mechanics for a better understanding of physiology and physiopathology and consequently for a better diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury. Different methods for the characterisation of corneal biomechanics are reviewed in detail, including those that are currently commercially available (Ocular Response Analyzer and CorVis ST). The clinical applicability of the parameters provided by these devices are discussed, especially in the fields of glaucoma, detection of ectatic disorders and orthokeratology. Likewise, other methods are also reviewed, such as Brillouin microscopy or dynamic optical coherence tomography and others with potential application to clinical practice but not validated for in vivo measurements, such as ultrasonic elastography. Advantages and disadvantages of all these techniques are described. Finally, the concept of biomechanical modelling is revised as well as the requirements for developing biomechanical models, with special emphasis on finite element modelling.

Os antioxidantes na dieta podem ter um papel importante na prevenção de algumas doenças crónicas em seres humanos resultantes da oxidação de lípidos e outros componentes celulares por radicais livres. Os mirtilos (Vaccinium sp.) são considerados, de entre os frutos frescos, uma das melhores fontes de antioxidantes. Neste trabalho foram estudados mirtilos Nothern Highbush, da cultivar Bluecrop colhidos no estado de maturação comercial em 5 localizações diferentes: Bouças -Sever do Vouga, Estarreja, Queirã – Vouzela, Oliveira do Hospital e Vila Verde. Foram avaliadas as características físico-químicas (ºbrix, acidez, humidade, calibre, firmeza, elasticidade e parâmetros colorimétricos) dos frutos. Para a determinação da composição fenólica e a atividade antioxidante os mirtilos foram submetidos a extrações sucessivas, com metanol (2x) e depois 2 vezes com uma solução aquosa de acetona (40% v/v), durante 1 h, com o auxílio de um banho de ultrassons. Os extratos obtidos foram utilizados para a determinação da composição fenólica (compostos fenólicos totais, antocianinas e taninos) e da capacidade antioxidante (utilizando os métodos ABTS, DPPH e FRAP). Foi ainda avaliada a influência da conservação durante 6 meses a -20ºC no teor de compostos fenólicos e capacidade antioxidante dos frutos. Pelos resultados obtidos, nos parâmetros de textura avaliados a amostra BBO revelou maior firmeza e elasticidade, e na avaliação da cor a amostra BES apresentou uma tonalidade azul mais acentuada. Os mirtilos provenientes de Estarreja eram os mais ricos em compostos fenólicos totais, em antocianinas e taninos, e que também apresentavam maior atividade antioxidante. O armazenamento durante 6 meses a -20ºC, originou diferenças significativas nas antocianinas e na atividade antioxidante. Em geral as amostras apresentavam diferenças significativas tanto nas suas propriedades físico-químicas, como na composição fenólica e na atividade antioxidante.

This paper investigates the reflection characteristics of structural or guided waves in rods at a solid/liquid interface. Structural waves, whose wavelengths are much larger than the diameter of the rod, are described in a first approximation by classical one-dimensional wave theory. The reflection characteristics of such waves at a solid/liquid (melting) interface has been reported by two different ultrasonic measurement techniques: first, measuring the fast regression rate of a melting interface during the burning of metal rod samples in an oxygen-enriched environment, and second, monitoring the propagation of the solid/liquid interface during the slow melting and solidification of a rod sample in a furnace. The second work clearly shows that the major reflection occurs from the solid/liquid interface and not the liquid/gas interface as predicted by plane longitudinal wave reflectivity theory. The present work confirms this observation by reporting on the results of some specially designed experiments to identify the main interface of reflection for structural waves in rods. Hence, it helps in explaining the fundamental discrepancy between the reflection characteristics at a solid/liquid interface between low frequency structural waves and high frequency bulk waves, and confirms that the detected echo within a burning metallic rod clearly represents a reflection from the solid/liquid interface. Background: Patient discomfort is one reason for poor compliance with supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). The aim of this study was to compare the levels of discomfort during SPT, using the Vector (TM) system and treatment with a conventional ultrasonic scaler. Methods: Forty-six patients with an SPT programme were debrided using both the Vector (TM) system and a conventional piezo-electric scaler (Sirona (TM)) in a split mouth design. A visual analogue scale was used to evaluate of pain scores upon completion of treatment. A verbal response scale(VRS) was used to assess discomfort, vibration and noise associated with the scaling system, as well as the volume and taste of the coolant used by these systems. Results: Patients instrumented with the Vector (TM) system experienced approximately half the amount of pain compared with the conventional ultrasonic scaling system. The VRS showed that the Vector (TM) system caused less discomfort than the conventional ultrasonic scaling system when assessed for pain, vibration, noise and volume of coolant. These findings were all statistically significant. There was, however, no statistically significant difference between the two systems when assessed for taste. Conclusion: During SPT the Vector (TM) system caused reduced discomforting sensations compared with conventional methods and may be useful in improving compliance with SPT programmes.
