Complexes of the type {[(pyS)Ru(NH3)(4)](2)-mu-L}(n), where pyS = 4-mercaptopyridine, L = 4,4'-dithiodipyridine (pySSpy), pyrazine (pz) and 1,4-dicyanobenzene (DCB), and n = +4 and +5 for fully reduced and mixed-valence complexes, respectively, were synthesized and characterized. Electrochemical data showed that there is electron communication between the metal centers with comproportionation constants of 33.2, 1.30 x 10(8) and 5.56 x 10(5) for L = pySSpy, pz and DCB, respectively. It was also observed that the electronic coupling between the metal centers is affected by the p-back-bonding interaction toward the pyS ligand. Raman spectroscopy showed a dependence of the intensity of the vibrational modes on the exciting radiations giving support to the assignments of the electronic transitions. The degree of electron communication between the metal centers through the bridging ligands suggests that these systems can be molecular wire materials.

Some cyanopolyynes, HCnN (n = 1, 3, ... , 17), are investigated by means of calculations at the MP2/cc-pVTZ and CCSD/cc-pVDZ levels. Although the MP2/cc-pVTZ results for geometries and molecular dipole moments are encouraging, the CCSD/cc-pVDZ level was superior for the study of infrared fundamental intensities. The main bands are also analyzed with a charge-charge flux-dipole flux (CCFDF) partition model based on quantities given by the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM). The intensity of vibrations corresponding to the stretching of CH bonds (3471-3473 cm(-1)) increases in line with the number of carbon atoms (from 61 to 146 km mol(-1) between HCN and HC13N). This increase is due to the charge flux contribution while the other contributions remain roughly unaltered except for HCN. Moreover, the hydrogen atom loses an almost constant amount of electronic charge during the CH bond enlargement and a small fraction of this charge spreads to atoms farther and farther away from hydrogen as the molecule size increases. The band associated with the doubly degenerate CH bending vibrations (643-732 cm(-1)) presents approximately the same intensity in all the studied cyanopolyynes (from 67 to 76 km mol(-1)). The CCFDF/QTAIM contributions are also nearly the same for these bending modes in HC5N and larger systems. The intensity of the mode mostly identified as CN stretching (around 2378-2399 cm(-1) except for HCN) increases from HCN up to HC7N (from 0.3 to 83 km mol(-1)) and nearly stabilizes around 80-90 km mol(-1) for larger systems. The CCFDF/QTAIM contributions for this mode also change significantly up to HC7N and remain almost constant in larger systems. We also observed the appearing of a very relevant band between 2283 and 2342 cm(-1). This mode is mainly associated with the symmetric stretching of CC triple bonds near the molecule center and exhibits large charge fluxes while the other contributions are almost negligible in the largest cyanopolyynes. The two vibrational bands associated with the smallest frequencies are also studied and extrapolation equations are suggested to predict their positions in larger cyanopolyynes. OBJECTIVE: To verify if there is difference in the buccal and posterior corridor width in cases treated with extraction of one and four premolars. METHODS: Through posed smile photographs of 23 Class II patients, subdivision, treated with extraction of one premolar and 25 Class I and Class II patients, subdivision, treated with extraction of four premolars, the percentage of buccal and posterior corridor width was calculated. The two protocols of extractions were compared regarding the buccal and posterior corridor width by independent t tests. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference on the buccal and posterior corridor widths between patients treated with symmetric and asymmetric extraction. CONCLUSION: The buccal and posterior corridor did not differ between the evaluated protocols of extractions.

Abstract Background Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are essential for maintaining tissue integrity by regulating intercellular and cell to extracellular matrix interactions. Cadherins and catenins are CAMs that are located on the cell membrane and are important for adherens junction (AJ) function. This study aims to verify if hypercholesterolemic diet (HCD) or bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) promotes structural bladder wall modifications specific to alterations in the expression of cadherins and catenins in detrusor muscle cells. Methods Forty-five 4-week-old female Wistar rats were divided into the following three groups: group 1 was a control group that was fed a normal diet (ND); group 2 was the BOO model and was fed a ND; and group 3 was a control group that was fed a HCD (1.25% cholesterol). Initially, serum cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and body weight were determined. Four weeks later, groups 1 and 3 underwent a sham operation; whereas group 2 underwent a partial BOO procedure that included a suture tied around the urethra. Six weeks later, all rats had their bladders removed, and previous exams were repeated. The expression levels of N-, P-, and E-cadherin, cadherin-11 and alpha-, beta- and gamma-catenins were evaluated by immunohistochemistry with a semiquantitative analysis. Results Wistar rats fed a HCD (group 3) exhibited a significant increase in LDL cholesterol levels (p=0.041) and body weight (p=0.017) when compared to both groups that were fed a normal diet in a ten-week period. We found higher - and -catenin expression in groups 2 and 3 when compared to group 1 (p = 0.042 and p = 0.044, respectively). We also observed Cadherin-11 overexpression in group 3 when compared to groups 1 and 2 (p = 0.002). Conclusions A HCD in Wistar rats promoted, in addition to higher body weight gain and increased serum LDL cholesterol levels, overexpression of - and -catenin in the detrusor muscle cells. Similar finding was observed in the BOO group. Higher Cadherin-11 expression was observed only in the HCD-treated rats. These findings may be associated with bladder dysfunctions that occur under such situations.

The modern GPUs are well suited for intensive computational tasks and massive parallel computation. Sparse matrix multiplication and linear triangular solver are the most important and heavily used kernels in scientific computation, and several challenges in developing a high performance kernel with the two modules is investigated. The main interest it to solve linear systems derived from the elliptic equations with triangular elements. The resulting linear system has a symmetric positive definite matrix. The sparse matrix is stored in the compressed sparse row (CSR) format. It is proposed a CUDA algorithm to execute the matrix vector multiplication using directly the CSR format. A dependence tree algorithm is used to determine which variables the linear triangular solver can determine in parallel. To increase the number of the parallel threads, a coloring graph algorithm is implemented to reorder the mesh numbering in a pre-processing phase. The proposed method is compared with parallel and serial available libraries. The results show that the proposed method improves the computation cost of the matrix vector multiplication. The pre-processing associated with the triangular solver needs to be executed just once in the proposed method. The conjugate gradient method was implemented and showed similar convergence rate for all the compared methods. The proposed method showed significant smaller execution time.

In this thesis we will disclose the results obtained from the diastereoisomeric salt formation (n salt, p salt and p1,n1 salt) between non-racemic trans-chrysanthemic acid (trans-ChA) and pure enantiomers of threo-2-dimethylamino-1-phenyl-1,3-propanediol (DMPP). The occurrence of p1,n1 salt formation can have profound effects on enantiomer separation of scalemic (non-racemic) mixtures. This phenomenon when accompanied by substrate self-association impedes the complete recovery of the major enantiomer through formation of an inescapable racemate cage. A synthetic sequence for the asymmetric synthesis of bicyclo[3.2.0]heptanones and bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-3-en-6-ones through a cycloaddition strategy is reported. The fundamental step is a [2+2]-cycloaddition of an enantiopure amide derived from the reaction between a set of acids and an oxazolidinone as the chiral auxiliary. The inter- and intramolecular cycloaddition of in situ-generated keteniminium salts gives bicycles with a good enantioselection. A key intermediate of Iloprost, a chemically stable and biologically active mimic of prostacyclin PGI2 is synthesized following a green approach. An example of simple optical resolution of this racemic intermediate involving the diastereoisomeric salt formation is described.

The following Ph.D work was mainly focused on catalysis, as a key technology, to achieve the objectives of sustainable (green) chemistry. After introducing the concepts of sustainable (green) chemistry and an assessment of new sustainable chemical technologies, the relationship between catalysis and sustainable (green) chemistry was briefly discussed and illustrated via an analysis of some selected and relevant examples. Afterwards, as a continuation of the ongoing interest in Dr. Marco Bandinis group on organometallic and organocatalytic processes, I addressed my efforts to the design and development of novel catalytic green methodologies for the synthesis of enantiomerically enriched molecules. In the first two projects the attention was focused on the employment of solid supports to carry out reactions that still remain a prerogative of omogeneous catalysis. Firstly, particular emphasis was addressed to the discovery of catalytic enantioselective variants of nitroaldol condensation (commonly termed Henry reaction), using a complex consisting in a polyethylene supported diamino thiopene (DATx) ligands and copper as active species. In the second project, a new class of electrochemically modified surfaces with DATx palladium complexes was presented. The DATx-graphite system proved to be efficient in promoting the Suzuki reaction. Moreover, in collaboration with Prof. Wolf at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), cyclic voltammetry studies were reported. This study disclosed new opportunities for carboncarbon forming processes by using heterogeneous, electrodeposited catalyst films. A straightforward metal-free catalysis allowed the exploration around the world of organocatalysis. In fact, three different and novel methodologies, using Cinchona, Guanidine and Phosphine derivatives, were envisioned in the three following projects. An interesting variant of nitroaldol condensation with simple trifluoromethyl ketones and also their application in a non-conventional activation of indolyl cores by Friedel-Crafts-functionalization, led to two novel synthetic protocols. These approaches allowed the preparation of synthetically useful trifluoromethyl derivatives bearing quaternary stereocenters. Lastly, in the sixth project the first -alkylation of allenoates with conjugated carbonyl compounds was envisioned. In the last part of this Ph.D thesis bases on an extra-ordinary collaboration with Prof. Balzani and Prof. Gigli, I was involved in the synthesis and characterization of a new type of heteroleptic cyclometaled-Ir(III) complexes, bearing bis-oxazolines (BOXs) as ancillary ligands. The new heteroleptic complexes were fully characterized and in order to examine the electroluminescent properties of FIrBOX(CH2), an Organic Light Emitting Device was realized.

Diese Arbeit beschftigt sich mit Strukturbildung im schlechten Lsungsmittel bei ein- und zweikomponentigen Polymerbrsten, bei denen Polymerketten durch Pfropfung am Substrat verankert sind. Solche Systeme zeigen laterale Strukturbildungen, aus denen sich interessante Anwendungen ergeben. Die Bewegung der Polymere erfolgt durch Monte Carlo-Simulationen im Kontinuum, die auf CBMC-Algorithmen sowie lokalen Monomerverschiebungen basieren. Eine neu entwickelte Variante des CBMC-Algorithmus erlaubt die Bewegung innerer Kettenteile, da der bisherige Algorithmus die Monomere in Nhe des Pfropfmonomers nicht gut relaxiert. Zur Untersuchung des Phasenverhaltens werden mehrere Analysemethoden entwickelt und angepasst: Dazu gehren die Minkowski-Mae zur Strukturuntersuchung binren Brsten und die Pfropfkorrelationen zur Untersuchung des Einflusses von Pfropfmustern. Bei einkomponentigen Brsten tritt die Strukturbildung nur beim schwach gepfropften System auf, dichte Pfropfungen fhren zu geschlossenen Brsten ohne laterale Struktur. Fr den graduellen bergang zwischen geschlossener und aufgerissener Brste wird ein Temperaturbereich bestimmt, in dem der bergang stattfindet. Der Einfluss des Pfropfmusters (Strung der Ausbildung einer langreichweitigen Ordnung) auf die Brstenkonfiguration wird mit den Pfropfkorrelationen ausgewertet. Bei unregelmiger Pfropfung sind die gebildeten Strukturen grer als bei regelmiger Pfropfung und auch stabiler gegen hhere Temperaturen. Bei binren Systemen bilden sich Strukturen auch bei dichter Pfropfung aus. Zu den Parametern Temperatur, Pfropfdichte und Pfropfmuster kommt die Zusammensetzung der beiden Komponenten hinzu. So sind weitere Strukturen mglich, bei gleicher Hufigkeit der beiden Komponenten bilden sich streifenfrmige, lamellare Muster, bei ungleicher Hufigkeit formt die Minorittskomponente Cluster, die in der Majorittskomponente eingebettet sind. Selbst bei gleichmig gepfropften Systemen bildet sich keine langreichweitige Ordnung aus. Auch bei binren Brsten hat das Pfropfmuster groen Einfluss auf die Strukturbildung. Unregelmige Pfropfmuster fhren schon bei hheren Temperaturen zur Trennung der Komponenten, die gebildeten Strukturen sind aber ungleichmiger und etwas grer als bei gleichmig gepfropften Systemen. Im Gegensatz zur self consistent field-Theorie bercksichtigen die Simulationen Fluktuationen in der Pfropfung und zeigen daher bessere bereinstimmungen mit dem Experiment.

In this work, solid-state NMR methods suitable for the investigation of supramolecular systems were developed and improved. In this context, special interest was focussed on non-covalent interactions responsible for the formation of supramolecular structures, such as pi-pi interacions and hydrogen-bonds. In the first part of this work, solid-state NMR methods were presented that provide information on molecular structure and motion via the investigation of anisotropic interactions, namely quadrupole and dipole-dipole couplings, under magic-angle spinning conditions. A two-dimensional 2H double quantum experiment was developed, which is performed under off magic-angle conditions and correlates 2H isotropic chemical shifts with quasistatic DQ-filtered line shapes. From the latter, the quadrupole coupling parameters of samples deuterated at multiple sites can be extracted in a site-selective fashion. Furthermore, 7Li quadrupole parameters of lithium intercalated into TiO2 were determined by NMR experiments performed under static and MAS conditions, and could provide information on the crystal geometry. For the determination of 7Li-7Li dipole-dipole couplings, multiple-quantum NMR experiments were performed. The 1H-13C REREDOR experiment was found to be capable of determining strong proton-carbon dipole-dipole couplings with an accuracy of 500~Hz, corresponding to a determination of proton-carbon chemical-bond lengths with picometer accuracy In the second part of this work, solid-state NMR experiments were combined with quantum-chemical calculations in order to aid and optimise the interpretation of experimental results. The investigations on Calix[4]hydroquinone nanotubes have shown that this combined approach can provide information on the presence of disordered and/or mobile species in supramolecular structures. As a second example, C3-symmetric discs arranging in helical columnar stacks were investigated. In these systems, 1H chemical shifts experience large pi-shifts due to packing effects, which were found to be long-ranged. Moreover, quantum-chemical calculations revealed that helicity in these systems is induced by the propeller-like conformation of the core of the molecules.

The studies conducted during my Phd thesis were focused on two different directions: 1. In one case we tried to face some long standing problems of the asymmetric aminocatalysis as the activation of encumbered carbonyl compounds and the control of the diastereoisomeric ratio in the diastero- and enantioselective construction of all carbon substituted quaternary stereocenters adjacent a tertiary one. In this section (Challenges) was described the asymmetric aziridination of ,-unsaturated ketones, the activation of ,-unsaturated -branched aldehydes and the Michael addition of oxindoles to enals and enones. For the activation via iminium ion formation of sterically demanding substrates, as ,-unsaturated ketones and ,-unsaturated -branched aldehydes, we exploited a chiral primary amine in order to overcome the problem of the iminium ion formation between the catalyst and encumbered carbonylic componds. For the control of diastereoisomeric ratio in the diastero- and enantioselective construction of all carbon substituted quaternary stereocenters adjacent a tertiary one we envisaged that a suitable strategy was the Michael addition to 3 substituted oxindoles to enals activated via LUMO-lowering catalysis. In this synthetic protocol we designed a new bifunctional catalyst with an amine moiety for activate the aldehyde and a tioureidic fragment for direct the approach of the oxindole. This part of the thesis (Challenges) could be considered pure basic research, where the solution of the synthetic problem was the goal itself of the research. 2. In the other hand (Molecules) we applied our knowledge about the carbonylic compounds activation and about cascade reaction to the synthesis of three new classes of spirooxindole in enantiopure form. The construction of libraries of these bioactive compounds represented a scientific bridge between medicinal chemistry or biology and the asymmetric catalysis.
