In this paper, we investigate the use of a wavelet transform-based analysis of audio tracks accompanying videos for the problem of automatic program genre detection. We compare the classification performance based on wavelet-based audio features to that using conventional features derived from Fourier and time analysis for the task of discriminating TV programs such as news, commercials, music shows, concerts, motor racing games, and animated cartoons. Three different classifiers namely the Decision Trees, SVMs, and k-Nearest Neighbours are studied to analyse the reliability of the performance of our wavelet features based approach. Further, we investigate the issue of an appropriate duration of an audio clip to be analyzed for this automatic genre determination. Our experimental results show that features derived from the wavelet transform of the audio signal can very well separate the six video genres studied. It is also found that there is no significant difference in performance with varying audio clip durations across the classifiers.

The present study aimed to analyze reprint request e-mail messages written by postgraduates (MA students) of two fields of study, namely Physics and EFL, to realize the differences and similarities between the two email types. The results showed that the two corpora were much alike at the level of move schemata while there were some differences concerning strategies and microstructural features. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a promising detection method for label-free sensing of biomolecules. In this paper, a multilayer design for a LSPR biosensor is presented. In the proposed design, a periodic array of dielectric grating is incorporated on top of a graphene layer in the biosensor. The aim is to improve sensitivity of the LSPR biosensor through monitoring biomolecular interactions of biotin-streptavidin. Sensitivity improvement is obtained for the proposed LSPR biosensor compared with conventional SPR counterparts. In addition, to optimize the design, we have investigated grating geometry including volume factor and grating depth. The outcome of this investigation identifies ideal functioning conditions corresponding to the best design parameters.

When discussing her verse novels, Dorothy Porter explicitly stated that she loved to ‘write bad’. This paper will argue that it was Porter’s engagement with the verse novel form and genre subversion, most notably seen with her detective and crime thriller verse novels The monkey’s mask and El Dorado, that allows for a destabilisation of traditionally established genre conventions, which in turn provide a narrative foundation for Porter’s use of abject erotic imagery.

In both The monkey’s mask and El Dorado there are several types of ‘bodies’ to be examined: the body of the verse narrative, the bodies of the characters subjected to crime, the body of poetry that is referred to as evidence, and the abject eroticised body. Extending upon the studies of Rose Lucas (1997) and Fleur Diamond (1999), this paper contends that it is Porter’s engagement with the abject erotic, as informed by Julia Kristeva’s (1982) theory of the abject and Johanna Blakley’s (1995) discussion of the abject in relation to eroticism, that allows Porter to subvert the phallocentric limitations upheld through the crime fiction genre and offer an alternative representation for lesbian sexuality and desire.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an important imaging technique. However, it is a time consuming process. The aim of this study is to make the imaging process ef?cient. MR images are sparse in the sensing domain and Compressive Sensing exploits this sparsity. Locally sparsi?ed Compressed Sensing is a specialized case of CS which sub-divides the image and sparsi?es each region separately; later samples are taken based on sparsity level in that region. In this paper, a new structured approach is presented for de?ning the size and locality of sub-regions in image. Experiments were done on the regions de?ned by proposed framework and local sparsity constraints were used to achieve high sparsity level and to reduce the sample set. Experimental results and their comparison with global CS is presented in the paper.

This paper presents a subwavelength grating based multilayer surface plasmon resonance biosensor (SPRB) which includes a periodic array of subwavelength grating on top of a layer of graphene sheet in the biosensor. The proposed biosensor is named grating-graphene SPRB (GG-SPRB). The aim of the proposed multilayer structure is to improve the sensitivity of the SPRB through monitoring of the biomolecular interactions of DNA hybridization. Significant sensitivity improvement is obtained for the GG-SPRB compared with the conventional SPRB. The result of the numerical investigation of the GG-SPRB is presented and compared with a theoretically developed multilayer matrix formalism, and a good agreement has been observed. In addition, an optimization of the grating dimensions including volume factor, grating depth, grating angle, grating period, and grating geometry (e.g., rectangular, sinusoidal and triangular) is presented. The outcome of the investigation presented in this paper identifies desired functioning conditions corresponding to the best design parameters for the GG-SPRB.
