In many mining operations (e.g. excavation, drilling, tunnelling, rock crushing) metallic components are forced against abrasive rocks in a complex motion. This study examines the relative importance of combined rolling and sliding motion in the two-body abrasive wear of a low carbon tempered martensitic steel against rock counterfaces. A novel wear test rig has been used to vary the amount of rolling and sliding motion between a rotating steel cylinder and a counter-rotating sandstone (highly abrasive) or limestone (much less abrasive) disc. Weight-loss measurements reveal that the wear rate of the steel increases as the amount of motion against the rock counterface is reduced from pure sliding to approximately 50% sliding (and approximately 50% rolling). Scanning electron microscopy shows that when the amount of motion is reduced from pure sliding to approximately 50% sliding the topographical and sub-surface physical properties of the worn steel and rock surfaces are modified.

We have experimentally investigated the crossed magnetic field effects on bulk melt-processed YBCO single domains. The samples were first permanently magnetized along their c-axis and then subjected to several cycles of a transverse magnetic field parallel to the ab planes. The magnetic properties along the c and ab directions were simultaneously measured using a couple of orthogonal pick-up coils as well as a Hall probe placed against the sample surface. The effects of both sweep amplitude and polarity were investigated. Field sweeps of alternate polarities are shown to affect the decay of the c-axis magnetization much more strongly than field sweeps of unique polarity do. However, the c-axis magnetization does not show any saturation even after a large number of field sweeps. Next, a micro-Hall probe scanning system was used to measure the distribution of magnetic induction over the top surface of the single domain subjected to the same combination of magnetic fields. The results are shown to be consistent with those determined with the sensing coils and bring out the role played by geometric effects.

A ball-on-flat reciprocating micro-tribometer has been used to measure the friction coefficient between aluminium alloy strip and a steel ball. A relatively small ball and correspondingly low contact load is used to give a contact width of the order of 100μm, closer to asperity contact widths than generally found for this type of test. The effects of load, initial strip surface roughness, lubricants and boundary additives are investigated. It is found that the friction coefficient is significantly reduced by the addition of a lubricant. Observations of the wear tracks and ball surface show that the material transfer from aluminium to the ball is reduced in the presence of the lubricant. The initial friction coefficient is further reduced by the addition of a boundary additive, but the friction coefficient after 8 cycles is unchanged. Small scale yielding around a mode I crack is analysed using polycrystalline discrete dislocation plasticity. Plane strain analyses are carried out with the dislocations all of edge character and modelled as line singularities in a linear elastic material. The lattice resistance to dislocation motion, nucleation, interaction with obstacles and annihilation are incorporated through a set of constitutive rules. Grain boundaries are modelled as impenetrable to dislocations. The polycrystalline material is taken to consist of two types of square grains, one of which has a bcc-like orientation and the other an fcc-like orientation. For both orientations there are three active slip systems. Alternating rows, alternating columns and a checker-board-like arrangement of the grains is used to construct the polycrystalline materials. Consistent with the increasing yield strength of the polycrystalline material with decreasing grain size, the calculations predict a decrease in both the plastic zone size and the crack-tip opening displacement for a given applied mode I stress intensity factor. Furthermore, slip-band and kink-band formation is inhibited by all grain arrangements and, with decreasing grain size, the stress and strain distributions more closely resemble the HRR fields with the crack-tip opening approximately inversely proportional to the yield strength of the polycrystalline materials. The calculations predict a reduction in fracture toughness with decreasing grain size associated with the grain boundaries acting as effective barriers to dislocation motion.

In concentrated contacts the behaviour of lubricants is much modified by the high local pressures: changes can arise both from molecular ordering within the very thin film lubricant layers present at the interface as well as from the deposition on the component surfaces of more solid-like polymeric boundary layers. These 'third bodies' separating the solid surfaces may have rheological or mechanical properties very different from those observed in the bulk. Classical elasto-hydrodynamic theory considers the entrapped lubricant to exhibit a piezo-viscous behaviour while the conventional picture of more solid boundary lubricant layers views their shear strength r as being linearly dependent on local pressure p, so that T = TO + ap where TO and a are constants. If TO is relatively small, then the coefficient of friction \i = T Ip ~ a and so Amonton's laws are recovered. However, the properties of adsorbed or deposited surface films, or indeed other third bodies such as debris layers, may be more complex than this. A preliminary study has looked quantitatively at the influence of the pressure dependence of the shear strength of any surface layer on the overall friction coefficient of a contact which is made up of an array of asperities whose height varies in a Gaussian manner. Individual contact points may be elastic or plastic. The analysis results in plots of coefficient of friction versus the service or load parameter PIH&NRa where P is the nominal pressure on the contact, HS the hardness of the deforming surface, N the asperity density, R the mean radius of curvature of the asperities, and a is the standard deviation of their height distribution. In principle, any variation oft withp can be incorporated into the model; however, in this initial study we have used data on colloidal suspensions from the group at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon as well as examining the effect of functional relationships of somewhat greater complexity than a simple linear form. Results of the analysis indicate that variations in fj. are possible as the load is varied which depend on the statistical spread of behaviour at individual asperity contacts. The value of this analysis is that it attempts to combine the behaviour of films on the molecular scale with the topography of real engineering surfaces and so give an indication of the effects at the full-size or macro-scale that can be achieved by chemical or molecular surface engineering.

this paper quantifies effects of using three different pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes on the losses in the inverter and induction motor of a 1 kW drive. Direct measurements of losses have been made with a calorimeter. Results show that for the inverter, discontinuous PWM excitation reduces losses by up to 15% compared to sine and symmetrical space vector PWM methods. However, at a low modulation index the greater harmonic content with discontinuous PWM increased motor losses by nearly 20%. This study demonstrates the importance of careful choice of modulation scheme to achieve high overall drive efficiency. © 2005 IEEE.

(GIFT) (Oreochromis niloticus) and Silver barb (Barbodes gonionotus) in rice fields and their
effects on the yield of rice was carried out in nine experimental rice plots. Three
treatments viz., treatment-1 with 0. niloticus (T1), treatment-2 with B. gonionotus (T2) and
treatment- 3 was kept as control (T3, without fish) were used in this study. Fertilizers
such as, Urea (178 kg ha-1), T.S.P (125 kg ha-1) and M.P. (67 kg ha-1) were applied in each
treatment. The fishes were stocked @ 6250 ha·1 and the experiment was continued for a
period of 107 days.
The values of water quality parameters such as, water temperature, dissolved oxygen,
pH and chlorophyll-a were found within suitable level. Between the two species, higher
specific growth rate was recorded in 0. niloticus than that of B. gonionotus. But B.
gonionotus showed much higher survival (72%) than that of 0. niloticus (35%). Similar to
survival, higher production (244 kg ha-1) and income (Tk. 6399 ha-1) were recorded in B.
gonionotus than those of 0. niloticus (142.8 kg ha'1 and Tk. 2137 ha-1). Significant

A rice-fish culture experiment with four treatments viz., T 1 with Amblyphmyngadan mala alone, T 2 with A. mala and Barbodes gonionotus, T3 with A. mala and Cyprinis carpio and T4 as control (without fish) was carried out in the rice fields during April through August1999. The recovery rate of A. mala were 42%, 37% and 42% in treatments 1, 2 and 3 respectively and the same recorded for B. gonionotus and C. cmpio were 62% and 55% respectively. Among the three species of fish, B. gonionotus showed much higher recovery rate than both of A. mala and C. carpio. The production of A. nwla was 12.50 kg/ha/3 months in monoculture, and 7.92 kglha/3 months and 8.86 kglha/3 months in combination with B. gonionotus and C. carpio, respectively. The production of B. gonionotus in T2 was 169.29 kg/ha/3 months and C. cmpio in T 3 was 252.92 kg/ha/3 months. The total fish production was 12.50 kg/ha/3 months, 175.21 kg/ha/3 months and 261.88 kg/ha/3 months in Tp T2 and T3, respectively. The highest yields of rice grain (5.78 ton/ha) and straw (7.83 ton/ha) were recorded in T3 and the lowest of the same was in T4 (grain 4.96 ton/ha and straw 6.62 ton/ha). Rice yield increased by about 12.10% in T1, 13.30% in T2 and 16.33% in T3 in context to T4, rice-alone culture. The results demonstrated that the culture of fish in rice fields had profound beneficial impact on the production of rice grain and straw.

Like large insects, micro air vehicles operate at low Reynolds numbers O(1; 000 - 10; 000) in a regime characterized by separated flow and strong vortices. The leading-edge vortex has been identified as a significant source of high lift on insect wings, but the conditions required for the formation of a stably attached leading-edge vortex are not yet known. The waving wing is designed to model the translational phase of an insect wing stroke by preserving the unsteady starting and stopping motion as well as three-dimensionality in both wing geometry (via a finite-span wing) and kinematics (via wing rotation). The current study examines the effect of the spanwise velocity gradient on the development of the leading-edge vortex along the wing as well as the effects of increasing threedimensionalityby decreasing wing aspect ratio from four to two. Dye flow visualization and particle image velocimetry reveal that the leading-edge vortices that form on a sliding or waving wing have a very high aspect ratio. The structure of the flow is largely two-dimensional on both sliding and waving wings and there is minimal interaction between the leading-edge vortices and the tip vortex. Significant spanwise flow was observed on the waving wing but not on the sliding wing. Despite the increased three-dimensionality on the aspect ratio 2 waving wing, there is no evidence of an attached leading-edge vortex and the structure of the flow is very similar to that on the higher-aspect-ratio wing and sliding wing. © Copyright 2010.

High Temperature superconductors are able to carry very high current densities, and thereby sustain very high magnetic fields. There are many projects which use the first property and these have concentrated on power generation, transmission and utilization, however there are relatively few which are currently exploiting the ability to sustain high magnetic fields. There are two main reasons for this: high field wound magnets can and have been made from both BSCCO and YBCO but currently their cost is much higher than the alternative provided by low Tc materials such as Nb3Sn and NbTi. An alternative form of the material is the bulk form which can be magnetized to high fields and using flux pumping this can be done in situ. This paper explores some of the applications of bulk superconductors and describes methods of producing field patterns using the highly uniform magnetic fields required for MRI and accelerator magnets as the frame of reference. The patterns are not limited to uniform fields and it is entirely possible to produce a field varying sinusoidally in space such as would be required for a motor or a generator. The scheme described in this paper describes a dipole magnet such as is found in an accelerator magnet. The tunnel is 30 × 50 × 1000 mm and we achieve a uniformity of better than 200 ppm over the 1000 mm length and better than 1 ppm over the central 500 mm region. The paper presents results for both the overall uniformity and the integrated uniformity which is 302 ppm over the 1000 mm length. © 2010 IEEE.

An implementation of the inverse vector Jiles-Atherton model for the solution of non-linear hysteretic finite element problems is presented. The implementation applies the fixed point method with differential reluctivity values obtained from the Jiles-Atherton model. Differential reluctivities are usually computed using numerical differentiation, which is ill-posed and amplifies small perturbations causing large sudden increases or decreases of differential reluctivity values, which may cause numerical problems. A rule based algorithm for conditioning differential reluctivity values is presented. Unwanted perturbations on the computed differential reluctivity values are eliminated or reduced with the aim to guarantee convergence. Details of the algorithm are presented together with an evaluation of the algorithm by a numerical example. The algorithm is shown to guarantee convergence, although the rate of convergence depends on the choice of algorithm parameters. © 2011 IEEE.

An experiment was conducted with five treatments i.e. rice combined with fish having regular urea fertilization (T1), rice combined with prawn having regular urea fertilization (T2), rice combined with fish with supplementary feeding (T3), rice combined with prawn with supplementary feeding (T4) and without fish and prawn (T5) was kept as control. The dissolved oxygen values obtained in treatments with fish both in morning and afternoon were lower than the values of prawn containing treatments and control. The values of nitrate-N, ammonia-N, phosphate-P and chlorophyll-a were higher in fish containing treatments than the prawn containing treatments and control. Between the two fish containing treatments the higher gross (539.44 kg/ha) and net (440.14 kg/ha) yield were obtained in T3 with supplementary feeding and the lower gross (424.88 kg/ha) and net (314.32 kg/ha) yield were recorded in T1 without supplementary feeding. Again, between two prawn containing treatments the higher gross (108.69 kg/ha) and net (81.92 kg/ha) yield were obtained in T4 with supplementary feeding and lower gross (64.32 kg/ha) and net (30.98 kg/ha) yield were recorded in T2 without supplementary feeding. The highest yield of rice grain (3.45 mt/ha) and straw (6.37 mt/ha) were obtained in T1 with fish having urea fertilization without feeding.
