This article explores the diversity of scientific disciplines and paradigms, their relevance for policy development, how policy emerges throughout society,-and the mechanisms by which scientists can promote the value of science in policy formation. The author gives examples from various countries where freshwater science was used to inform policy.

High-resolution orbital and in situ observations acquired of the Martian surface during the past two decades provide the opportunity to study the rock record of Mars at an unprecedented level of detail. This dissertation consists of four studies whose common goal is to establish new standards for the quantitative analysis of visible and near-infrared data from the surface of Mars. Through the compilation of global image inventories, application of stratigraphic and sedimentologic statistical methods, and use of laboratory analogs, this dissertation provides insight into the history of past depositional and diagenetic processes on Mars. The first study presents a global inventory of stratified deposits observed in images from the High Resolution Image Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on-board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This work uses the widespread coverage of high-resolution orbital images to make global-scale observations about the processes controlling sediment transport and deposition on Mars. The next chapter presents a study of bed thickness distributions in Martian sedimentary deposits, showing how statistical methods can be used to establish quantitative criteria for evaluating the depositional history of stratified deposits observed in orbital images. The third study tests the ability of spectral mixing models to obtain quantitative mineral abundances from near-infrared reflectance spectra of clay and sulfate mixtures in the laboratory for application to the analysis of orbital spectra of sedimentary deposits on Mars. The final study employs a statistical analysis of the size, shape, and distribution of nodules observed by the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover team in the Sheepbed mudstone at Yellowknife Bay in Gale crater. This analysis is used to evaluate hypotheses for nodule formation and to gain insight into the diagenetic history of an ancient habitable environment on Mars.

The author provides a selected bibliography of important publications relevant to the topic of the article.

This article introduces a new listing of published scientific contributions from the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) and its later Research Council associates – the Institute of Freshwater Ecology (1989–2000) and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (2000+). The period 1929–2006 is covered. The authors offer also information on specific features of the listing; also an outline of influences that underlay the research, and its scientific scope.

The intent of this study is to provide formal apparatus which facilitates the investigation of problems in the methodology of science. The introduction contains several examples of such problems and motivates the subsequent formalism.
A general definition of a formal language is presented, and this definition is used to characterize an individual’s view of the world around him. A notion of empirical observation is developed which is independent of language. The interplay of formal language and observation is taken as the central theme. The process of science is conceived as the finding of that formal language that best expresses the available experimental evidence.
To characterize the manner in which a formal language imposes structure on its universe of discourse, the fundamental concepts of elements and states of a formal language are introduced. Using these, the notion of a basis for a formal language is developed as a collection of minimal states distinguishable within the language. The relation of these concepts to those of model theory is discussed.
An a priori probability defined on sets of observations is postulated as a reflection of an individual’s ontology. This probability, in conjunction with a formal language and a basis for that language, induces a subjective probability describing an individual’s conceptual view of admissible configurations of the universe. As a function of this subjective probability, and consequently of language, a measure of the informativeness of empirical observations is introduced and is shown to be intuitively plausible – particularly in the case of scientific experimentation.
The developed formalism is then systematically applied to the general problems presented in the introduction. The relationship of scientific theories to empirical observations is discussed and the need for certain tacit, unstatable knowledge is shown to be necessary to fully comprehend the meaning of realistic theories. The idea that many common concepts can be specified only by drawing on knowledge obtained from an infinite number of observations is presented, and the problems of reductionism are examined in this context.
A definition of when one formal language can be considered to be more expressive than another is presented, and the change in the informativeness of an observation as language changes is investigated. In this regard it is shown that the information inherent in an observation may decrease for a more expressive language.
The general problem of induction and its relation to the scientific method are discussed. Two hypotheses concerning an individual’s selection of an optimal language for a particular domain of discourse are presented and specific examples from the introduction are examined.

A review article looking at the type of information requirements commonly shared by scientists and their use of traditional information services. Areas covered include primary requirements of IFE (Institute of Freshwater Ecology) staff, pure versus applied research, informal and personal sources of information, and traditional library and information services. It goes on to describe how research into information systems and technology may improve the wider accessibility and use of information to the scientific community. Technologies covered include online databases, telecommunications, gateways, expert systems, optical technology and applications of CDROM.

Science Cafes present a casual meeting place where people who may have little or no science background can learn about a current scientific topic in an informal and friendly environment. The coffee shop setting is designed to be inviting and informal so that students, faculty, and community members can feel comfortable and engage in lively and meaningful conversations. The café is organized around an interesting scientific topic with a brief presentation by a scientist and may include a short video clip. A Science Café can (1) provide an opportunity and venue for increasing science literacy, (2) publicize local scientific endeavors, and (3) identify the library as an epicenter of informal education on the campus and in the community. This presentation will describe the development of the Science Café at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast campus Library in Long Beach and plans for future cafes on the Mississippi coast.

The first concept of a new library was introduced in 2001 by a faculty member at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute. The suggestion for the construction of a new library was based on two specific reasons: existing library is located in one of the most vulnerable buildings to hurricane damage and the library has outgrown its current space. This presentation provides a general overview of the current status and changing needs of the Marine Science Library and how the idea of a new library finally became a reality

This report is an introduction to the concept of treewidth, a property of graphs that has important implications in algorithms. Some basic concepts of graph theory are presented in the first chapter for those readers that are not familiar with the notation. In Chapter 2, the definition of treewidth and some different ways of characterizing it are explained. The last two chapters focus on the algorithmic implications of treewidth, which are very relevant in Computer Science. An algorithm to compute the treewidth of a graph is presented and its result can be later applied to many other problems in graph theory, like those introduced in the last chapter.

Background: Neonatal trials remain difficult to conduct for several reasons: in particular the need for study sites to have an existing infrastructure in place, with trained investigators and validated quality procedures to ensure good clinical, laboratory practices and a respect for high ethical standards. The objective of this work was to identify the major criteria considered necessary for selecting neonatal intensive care units that are able to perform drug evaluations competently. Methodology and Main Findings: This Delphi process was conducted with an international multidisciplinary panel of 25 experts from 13 countries, selected to be part of two committees (a scientific committee and an expert committee), in order to validate criteria required to perform drug evaluation in neonates. Eighty six items were initially selected and classified under 7 headings: "NICUs description - Level of care'' (21), "Ability to perform drug trials: NICU organization and processes (15), "Research Experience'' (12), "Scientific competencies and area of expertise'' (8), "Quality Management'' (16), "Training and educational capacity'' (8) and "Public involvement'' (6). Sixty-one items were retained and headings were rearranged after the first round, 34 were selected after the second round. A third round was required to validate 13 additional items. The final set includes 47 items divided under 5 headings. Conclusion: A set of 47 relevant criteria will help to NICUs that want to implement, conduct or participate in drug trials within a neonatal network identify important issues to be aware of. Instituições de Ensino e Pesquisa possuem um papel fundamental na formação de seus profissionais considerando a ciência, tecnologia e o conhecimento que afetam toda a sociedade. A falta de um programa de gestão de resíduos, na maioria das instituições de ensino e pesquisa do país, tem levado, com certa frequência, a um descarte pouco responsável dos materiais residuais no ambiente, através das pias dos laboratórios ou do lixo comum, ou em muitos casos, resultando na geração de passivos ambientais acumulados precariamente por longo tempo à espera de um eventual tratamento. Entretanto, essas Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES), através de suas atividades de pesquisa, ensino e extensão, acabam gerando resíduos químicos perigosos, como os de laboratórios químicos. Nas Universidades, o volume de resíduos gerados é muito pequeno, porém a diversidade de resíduos é muito grande, o que dificulta o tratamento dos mesmos. Os resíduos químicos perigosos gerados no Instituto de Química situado no Pavilhão Reitor Haroldo Lisboa da Cunha da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, necessitam de procedimentos seguros de manejo para a sua passivação e/ou disposição final, já que eles requerem um descarte distinto daquele dado ao lixo doméstico, conforme estabelecidos na legislação. Este trabalho objetiva estudar os aspectos de gestão, saúde e segurança do trabalho relacionado ao manejo de resíduos gerados em laboratórios químicos, potencialmente perigosos, enfocando ações preventivas de minimização dos resíduos e o seu tratamento, particularmente nas fontes geradoras, estudando o caso dos laboratórios de Química Geral e Inorgânica comparando-os com o laboratório de Engenharia e Tecnologia de Petróleo e Petroquímica. O trabalho classificou-se como pesquisa exploratória e empírica através do estudo de caso. A metodologia utilizada constituiu-se da aplicação de um questionário, dirigido aos técnicos dos laboratórios, e observações, para avaliação do manejo de resíduos químicos perigosos de forma a propor uma possível adequação dos laboratórios às legislações vigentes, como as resoluções NBR RDC 306/04, CONAMA 358/05, das Fichas de Informação de Segurança, das Normas Regulamentadoras e a OHSAS 18001/07. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que os dois laboratórios estudados de Química Geral e Inorgânica não atendem, ainda, o que preconiza a legislação RDC 306/04 da ANVISA. Observa-se que os resíduos químicos perigosos são manejados inadequadamente, expondo a graves riscos físicos, químicos e de acidentes para os usuários dos laboratórios, além da poluição ambiental gerado pelo lançamento dos efluentes nas redes de esgoto, sem tratamento. O estudo corrobora para a necessidade da implementação do Programa de Gerenciamento de Resíduos Químicos Perigosos, da criação de uma Coordenação de Gestão Ambiental presidida por um especialista da área, da construção de saídas de emergência, com escadas de escape externo para os laboratórios estudados e, sobretudo, de capacitação permanente dos funcionários e alunos.
