Science based news is widely reported in the media. The ability to interact critically with such news reports is increasingly seen as a legitimate part of the science education agenda. This paper reports the findings of two studies looking at the early response and subsequent usage of a resource promoting the integration of science-based news in secondary science curriculum in Northern Ireland. This paper charts the introduction of the resource into schools. The subsequent impact on the science curriculum and the implications for teacher professional development are considered. Many science teachers demonstrate willingness and aptitude to use primary media sources within their teaching. Some who adopted the resource demonstrate the capacity to sustain the development using the resource as a catalyst in ongoing curricular change. Insights gained in this study are relevant to policy makers and curriculum developers as well as teachers seeking to promote this aspect of science education

We assess the effects of a realistic intrinsic model for imperfections in cluster states by introducing noisy cluster states and characterizing their role in the one-way computational model. A suitable strategy to counter-affect these non-idealities is represented by the use of small clusters, stripped of any redundancy, which leads to the search for compact schemes for one-way quantum computation. In light of this, we quantitatively address the behavior of a simple four-qubit cluster which simulates a controlled-NOT under the influences of our model for decoherence. Our scheme can be particularly useful in an all-optical setup and the strategy we address can be directly applied in those, experimental situations where small cluster states can be constucted.

We address the effects of natural three-qubit interactions on the computational power of one-way quantum computation. A benefit of using more sophisticated entanglement structures is the ability to construct compact and economic simulations of quantum algorithms with limited resources. We show that the features of our study are embodied by suitably prepared optical lattices, where effective three-spin interactions have been theoretically demonstrated. We use this to provide a compact construction for the Toffoli gate. Information flow and two-qubit interactions are also outlined, together with a brief analysis of relevant sources of imperfection.

It is shown how the fractional probability density diffusion equation for the diffusion limit of one-dimensional continuous time random walks may be derived from a generalized Markovian Chapman-Kolmogorov equation. The non-Markovian behaviour is incorporated into the Markovian Chapman-Kolmogorov equation by postulating a Levy like distribution of waiting times as a kernel. The Chapman-Kolmogorov equation so generalised then takes on the form of a convolution integral. The dependence on the initial conditions typical of a non-Markovian process is treated by adding a time dependent term involving the survival probability to the convolution integral. In the diffusion limit these two assumptions about the past history of the process are sufficient to reproduce anomalous diffusion and relaxation behaviour of the Cole-Cole type. The Green function in the diffusion limit is calculated using the fact that the characteristic function is the Mittag-Leffler function. Fourier inversion of the characteristic function yields the Green function in terms of a Wright function. The moments of the distribution function are evaluated from the Mittag-Leffler function using the properties of characteristic functions and a relation between the powers of the second moment and higher order even moments is derived. Translational energy spectroscopy (TES) has been used to study state-selective one-electron capture by H and He-like ions of C, N and O in both H and H-2 within the range 250-900 eV amu(- 1). The main collision mechanisms leading to state-selective electron capture have been identified, their relative importance assessed and compared, where possible, with theoretical predictions and with any previous measurements based on photon emission spectroscopy. For one-electron capture in H-2, the relative importance of contributions from non- dissociative and dissociative capture as well as from two- electron capture into autoionizing states is found to be strikingly different for the cases considered. Our TES measurements in atomic hydrogen provide an important extension of previous measurements to energies below 1000 eV amu(-1) and show that, as the impact energy decreases, electron capture becomes more selective until only a single n product channel is significant. These product main channels are well described by reaction windows calculated using a Landau-Zener approach. However, the same approach applied to the more complex energy- change spectra observed in H-2 is found to be less successful.

The technique of double translational energy spectroscopy.(DTES), recently successfully developed in this laboratory for use with targets of atomic hydrogen, has been used to study one-electron capture by ground-state N2+(2s22p)(2)p(0) ions in collisions with hydrogen atoms at energies within the range 0.8-6.0 keV. Cross sections for the formation of the main excited product channels have been determined. The measurements allow a re-evaluation of our previous TES measurements carried out with N2+ primary beams containing an admixture of metastable N2+(2s2p2)(4)p ions. The main findings of these earlier measurements are confirmed and the DTES measurements now remove any ambiguity in interpretation of the experimental data. While recent theoretical studies correctly predict the two main N+ D-3(0) and P-3(0) product channels, the quantitative agreement with experiment is only partially satisfactory.

We present a fast and efficient hybrid algorithm for selecting exoplanetary candidates from wide-field transit surveys. Our method is based on the widely used SysRem and Box Least-Squares (BLS) algorithms. Patterns of systematic error that are common to all stars on the frame are mapped and eliminated using the SysRem algorithm. The remaining systematic errors caused by spatially localized flat-fielding and other errors are quantified using a boxcar-smoothing method. We show that the dimensions of the search-parameter space can be reduced greatly by carrying out an initial BLS search on a coarse grid of reduced dimensions, followed by Newton-Raphson refinement of the transit parameters in the vicinity of the most significant solutions. We illustrate the method's operation by applying it to data from one field of the SuperWASP survey, comprising 2300 observations of 7840 stars brighter than V = 13.0. We identify 11 likely transit candidates. We reject stars that exhibit significant ellipsoidal variations caused indicative of a stellar-mass companion. We use colours and proper motions from the Two Micron All Sky Survey and USNO-B1.0 surveys to estimate the stellar parameters and the companion radius. We find that two stars showing unambiguous transit signals pass all these tests, and so qualify for detailed high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up.

We describe here a method of assessment for students. A number of short-comings of traditional assessment methods, especially essays and examinations, are discussed and an alternative assessment method, the student project, is suggested. The method aims not just to overcome the short-comings of more traditional methods, but also to provide over-worked and under-resourced academics with viable primary data for socio-legal research work. Limitations to the method are discussed, with proposals for minimising the impact of these limitations. The whole �student project� approach is also discussed with reference to the Quality Assurance Agency benchmark standards for law degrees, standards which are expected of all institutions in the UK.

A one-electron oxidation of a methionine residue is thought to be a key step in the neurotoxicity of the beta amyloid peptide of Alzheimer's disease. The chemistry of the radical cation of N-formylmethioninamide (11+) and two model systems, dimethyl sulfide (1+) and ethyl methyl sulfide (6+), in the presence of oxygen have been studied by B3LYP/6-31G(d) and CBS-RAD calculations. The stable form of 11+ has a three-electron bond between the sulfur radical cation and the carbonyl oxygen atom of the i - 1 residue. The radical cation may lose a proton from the methyl or methylene groups flanking the oxidized sulfur. Both 11+ and the resultant C-centered radicals may add oxygen to form peroxy radicals. The calculations indicate that unlike C-centered radicals the sulfur radical cation does not form a covalent bond to oxygen but rather forms a loose ion-induced dipole complex with an S-O separation of about 2.7 Å, and is bound by about 13 kJ mol-1 (on the basis of 1+ + O2). Direct intramolecular abstraction of an H atom from the C site is unlikely. It is endothermic by more than 20 kJ mol-1 and involves a high barrier (G = 79 kJ mol-1). The -to-S C-centered radicals will add oxygen to form peroxy radicals. The OH BDEs of the parent hydroperoxides are in the range of 352-355 kJ mol-1, similar to SH BDEs (360 kJ mol-1) and C-H BDEs (345-350 kJ mol-1). Thus, the peroxy radicals are oxidizing species comparable in strength to thiyl radicals and peptide backbone C-centered radicals. Each peroxy radical can abstract a hydrogen atom from the backbone C site of the Met residue to yield the corresponding C-centered radical/hydroperoxide in a weakly exothermic process with modest barriers in the range of 64-92 kJ mol-1.
