Transport coefficients have been measured as a function of the concentration of sulfur dioxide, SO(2), dissolved in 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-imide, [BMMI][Tf(2)N], as well as in its lithium salt solution, Li[Tf(2)N]. The SO(2) reduces viscosity and density and increases conductivity and diffusion coefficients in both the neat [BMMI] [Tf(2)N] and the [BMMI][Tf(2)N]-Li[Tf(2)N] solution. The conductivity enhancement is not assigned to a simple viscosity effect; the weakening of ionic interactions upon SO(2) addition also plays a role. Microscopic details of the SO(2) effect were unraveled using Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The Raman spectra suggest that the Li(+)-[Tf(2)N] interaction is barely affected by SO(2), and the SO(2)-[Tf(2)N] interaction is weaker than previously observed in an investigation of an ionic liquid containing the bromide anion. Transport coefficients calculated by MD simulations show the same trend as the experimental data with respect to SO(2) content. The MD simulations provide structural information on SO(2) molecules around [Tf(2)N], in particular the interaction of the sulfur atom of SO(2) with oxygen and fluorine atoms of the anion. The SO(2)-[BMMI] interaction is also important because the [BMMI] cations with above-average mobility have a larger number of nearest-neighbor SO(2) molecules.

Defatted rumen protein and soy protein concentrate were extruded in a 15.5:1 L/D single-screw extruder at the optimum conditions for their expansion (150A degrees C and 35% moisture, and 130A degrees C and 35% moisture, respectively). Emulsions were produced with these proteins and studied by rheology and time domain low-resolution (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR). Extrusion increased storage modulus of rumen protein emulsions. The opposite was observed for soy protein. Mechanical relaxation showed the existence of three relaxing components in the emulsions whose relative contributions were changed by extrusion. Likewise, spin-spin relaxation time constants (T (2)) measured by TD-NMR also showed three major distinct populations of protons in respect to their mobility that were also altered by extrusion. Extrusion increased surface hydrophobicity of both rumen and soy protein. Solubility of rumen protein increased with extrusion whereas soy protein had its solubility decreased after processing. Extrusion promoted molecular reorganization of protein, increasing its superficial hydrophobicity, affecting its interfacial properties and improving its emulsifying behavior. The results show that extrusion can promote the use of rumen, a by-product waste from the meat industry, in human nutrition by replacing soy protein in food emulsions.

In the present work, the surface of the Eu-BTC = [Eu(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [Eu(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [Eu(TMA)(H(2)O)(6)] complexes (EMA = 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylate, TLA = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate and TMA = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) was modified using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) by a new microwave assisted method that proved to be simple and efficient. According to our observations, the most efficient luminescence is the material based on APTES incorporating [Eu(TMA)(H(2)O)(6)] complexes, denoted as Eu-TMA-Si, shows the highest emission efficiency. Therefore, it is proposed as a promising material for molecular conjugation in clinical diagnosis. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Luminescent films containing terbium complex [Tb(acac)(3)(H(2)O)(3)] (acac = acetylacetonate) doped into a polycarbonate (PC) matrix were prepared and irradiated at low-dose gamma radiation with ratio of 5 and 10 kGy. The PC polymer was doped with 5% (w/w) of the Tb(3+) complex. The thermal behavior was investigated by utilization of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Changes in thermal stability due to the addition of doping agent into the polycarbonate matrix. Based on the emission spectra of PC:5% Tb(acac)(3) film were observed the characteristic bands arising from the (5)D(4) -> (7)F(J) transitions of Tb(3+) ion (J = 0-6), indicating the ability to obtain the luminescent films. Doped samples irradiated at low dose of gamma irradiation showed a decrease in luminescence intensity with increasing of the dose. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Red, blue and green emitting rare earth compounds (RE(3+) = Eu(3+), Gd(3+) and Tb(3+)) containing the benzenetricarboxylate ligands (BTC) [hemimellitic (EMA), trimellitic (TLA) and trimesic (TMA)] were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, complexometric titration, X-ray diffraction patterns, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complexes presented the following formula: [RE(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [RE(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [RE(TMA)(H(2)O)(G)], except for Tb-TMA compound, which was obtained only as anhydrous. Phosphorescence data of Gd(3+)-(BTC) complexes showed that the triplet states (T) of the BTC(3-) anions have energy higher than the main emitting states of the Eu(3+) ((5)D(0)) and Tb(3+) ((5)D(4)), indicating that BTC ligands can act as intramolecular energy donors for these metal ions. The high values of experimental intensity parameters (Omega(2)) of Eu(3+)-(BTC) complexes indicate that the europium ion is in a highly polarizable chemical environment. Based on the luminescence spectra, the energy transfer from the T state of BTC ligands to the excited (5)D(0) and (5)D(4) levels of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions is discussed. The emission quantum efficiencies (eta) of the (5)D(0) emitting level of the Eu(3+) ion have been also determined. In the case of the Tb(3+) ion, the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions (5)D(4) -> (7)F(J) (J=0-6), indicating that the BTC ligands are good sensitizers. The RE(3+)-(BTC) complexes act as efficient light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs) and can be used as tricolor luminescent materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The diazocarbene radical, CNN, and the ions CNN(+) and CNN(-) were investigated at a high level of theory. Very accurate structural parameters for the states X(3)Sigma(-) and A(3)Pi of CNN, and X(2)Pi of both CNN(+) and CNN(-) were obtained with the UCCSD(T) method using correlated-consistent basis functions with extrapolations to the complete basis set limit, with valence only and also with all electrons correlated. Harmonic and anharmonic frequencies were obtained for all species and the Renner parameter and average frequencies evaluated for the Pi states. At the UCCSD(T)/CBS(T-5) level of theory, Delta(f)H(0 K) = 138.89 kcal/mol and Delta(f)H(298 K) = 139.65 kcal/mol were obtained for diazocarbene; for the ionization potential and the electron affinity of CNN, 10.969 eV (252.95 kcal/mol), and 1.743 eV (40.19 kcal/mol), respectively, are predicted. Geometry optimization was also carried out with the CASSCF/MRCI/CBS(T-5) approach for the states X(3)Sigma(-) A(3)Pi, and a(1)Delta of CNN, and with the CASSCF/MRSDCI/aug-cc-pVTZ approach for the states b(1)Sigma(+), c(1)Pi, d(1)Sigma(-), and B(3)Sigma(-), and excitation energies (T(e)) evaluated. Vertical energies were calculated for 15 electronic states, thus improving on the accuracy of the five transitions already described, and allowing for a reliable overview of a manifold of other states, which is expected to guide future spectroscopic experiments. This study corroborates the experimental assignment for the vertical transition X (3)Sigma(-) <- E (3)Pi.

Structural, energetic, and vibrational properties of new molecular species, HSeF and HFSe, the associated transition state, and dissociation fragments are investigated using a state-of-the-art theoretical approach, CCSD(T)/CBS. HSeF is a normal covalently bonded molecule 38.98 kcal mol (1) more stable than the complex HF-Se, which shows an unusual structure with a central fluorine atom and a bond angle of 101.8 degrees.A barrier (Delta G(#)) of 49.01 kcal mol (1) separates the two species. Vibrational frequencies are also quite distinct. Heats of formation are evaluated for the diatomic fragments and HSeF. Final Delta(f)H values depend on the experimental accuracy of those of Se(g) and H(2)Se. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The interaction of 4-nerolidylcatechol (4-NRC), a potent antioxidant agent, and 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) was investigated by the solubility method using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) methods in addition to UV-Vis, (1)H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and molecular modeling. The inclusion complexes were prepared using grinding, kneading and freeze-drying methods. According to phase solubility studies in water a B(S)-type diagram was found, displaying a stoichiometry complexation of 2:1 (drug:host) and stability constant of 6494 +/- A 837 M(-1). Stoichiometry was established by the UV spectrophotometer using Job`s plot method and, also confirmed by molecular modeling. Data from (1)H-NMR, and FTIR, experiments also provided formation evidence of an inclusion complex between 4-NRC and HP-beta-CD. 4-NRC complexation indeed led to higher drug solubility and stability which could probably be useful to improve its biological properties and make it available to oral administration and topical formulations.

Two porous mixed valent diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate compounds have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Crystalline solids of [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl] center dot 3.5H(2)O (tere=terephthalate) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl] center dot 1.5H(2)O (adip=adipate) consist of extended chains in which polymeric layers of multiply metal-metal bonded [Ru(2)](5+) cores are bridged by dicarboxylate ligands in paddlewheel type geometries. Units of [Ru(2)(dicarboxylate)(2)](n)(+) are linked by axial bridging chloride ions generating three-dimensional networks. The polymers loose non-bonded water molecules at low temperatures but do not undergo thermal decomposition below 280-300 degrees C. Both of compounds exhibit high BET surface areas, [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl]: 235 m(2) g(-1) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl]: 281 m(2) g(-1), and occlude similar numbers of mol of N(2) per mol of metal. The terephthalate ligand generated an organized structure with supermicropores (total pore size of 0.24 cm(3) g(-1)) while the adipate ligand led to a mesoporous structure (total pore sizes of 0.47 cm(3) g(-1)) for the corresponding diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate polymers. Some sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) are the active compounds of a great number of traditionally medicinal plants from the Asteraceae family and possess considerable cytotoxic activity. Several studies in vitro have shown the inhibitory activity against cells derived from human carcinoma of the nasopharynx (KB). Chemical studies showed that the cytotoxic activity is due to the reaction of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl structures of the SLs with thiols, such as cysteine. These studies support the view that SLs inhibit tumour growth by selective alkylation of growth-regulatory biological macromolecules, such as key enzymes, which control cell division, thereby inhibiting a variety of cellular functions, which directs the cells into apoptosis. In this study we investigated a set of 55 different sesquiterpene lactones, represented by 5 skeletons (22 germacranolides, 6 elemanolides, 2 eudesmanolides, 16 guaianolides and nor-derivatives and 9 pseudoguaianolides), in respect to their cytotoxic properties. The experimental results and 3D molecular descriptors were submitted to Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) to classify (training set) and predict (test set) the cytotoxic activity. From the obtained results, it was concluded that only the geometrical descriptors showed satisfactory values. The Kohonen map obtained after training set using 25 geometrical descriptors shows a very significant match, mainly among the inactive compounds (similar to 84%). Analyzing both groups, the percentage seen is high (83%). The test set shows the highest match, where 89% of the substances had their cytotoxic activity correctly predicted. From these results, important properties for the inhibition potency are discussed for the whole dataset and for subsets of the different structural skeletons. (C) 2008 Elsevier Masson SAS. Structural, vibrational, and energetic properties of new molecular species, HSI and HIS are investigated for the first time using a state-of-the-art theoretical approach. These molecules can be easily differentiated by their geometric parameters and vibrational spectra. HSI is much more stable, and a direct unimolecular isomerization is very unlikely. Kinetics estimates predict that only at low temperatures there is a possibility of isolating HIS. For HS-I, we estimate a bond dissociation energy of 46.25 kcal/mol, and a heat of formation at 298.15 K of 12.84 kcal/mol. For the H(2)S + I(2) -> HSI + HI reaction enthalpy, we found 8.40 kcal/ mol. Thioredoxin (Trx1), a very important protein for regulating intracellular redox reactions, was immobilized on iron oxide superparamagnetic nanoparticles previously coated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) via covalent coupling using the EDC (1-ethyl-3-{3-dimethylaminopropyl}carbodiimide) method. The system was extensively characterized by atomic force microscopy, vibrational and magnetic techniques. In addition, gold nanoparticles were also employed to probe the exposed groups in the immobilized enzyme based on the SERS (surface enhanced Raman scattering) effect, confirming the accessibility of the cysteines residues at the catalytic site. For the single coated superparamagnetic nanoparticle, by monitoring the enzyme activity with the Ellman reagent, DTNB=5,5`-dithio-bis(2-15 nitrobenzoic acid), an inhibitory effect was observed after the first catalytic cycle. The inhibiting effect disappeared after the application of an additional silicate coating before the AFTS treatment, reflecting a possible influence of unprotected iron-oxide sites in the redox kinetics. In contrast, the doubly coated system exhibited a normal in-vitro kinetic activity, allowing a good enzyme recovery and recyclability. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The ionic liquid (IL), 1-allyl-3-(1-butyl)imidazolium chloride (AlBuImCl), has been synthesized and its properties determined. Increase in the temperature increased its conductivity and decreased its density, polarity, and viscosity. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), dissolves in thisIL by heating at 80 degrees C; this did not affect its degree of polymerization, decreased its index of crystallinity (Ic), and changed in morphology after regeneration. Convenient acylation of MCC was achieved by using 50% excess anhydride at 80 degrees C, for 24 or 48 h for acetic and butyric anhydride, respectively. The composition of the mixed esters depended on the initial ratio of the anhydrides, and their order of addition.

The question posed in the title has been addressed by studying the swelling of celluloses at 20 C by twenty protic solvents, including water; linear- and branched-chain aliphatic alcohols; unsaturated aliphatic alcohols, and alkoxyalcohols. The biopolymers investigated included microcrystalline cellulose, MC, native and never-dried mercerized cotton cellulose, cotton and M-cotton, and native and never-dried mercerized eucalyptus cellulose, eucalyptus and M-eucalyptus, respectively. In most cases, better correlations with the physico-chemical properties of the solvents were obtained when the swelling was expressed as number of moles of solvent/anhydroglucose unit, nSw, rather than as % increase in sample weight. The descriptors employed in these correlations included, where available, Hildebrand`s solubility parameters, Gutmann`s acceptor and donor numbers, solvent molar volume, V(S), as well as solvatochromic parameters. The latter, employed for the first time for correlating the swelling of biopolymers, included empirical solvent polarity, E(T)(30), solvent ""acidity"", alpha(S), ""basicity"", beta(S), and dipolarity/polarizability, pi(S)*, respectively. Small regression coefficients and large sums of the squares of the residues were obtained when values of nSw were correlated with two solvent parameters. Much better correlations were obtained with three solvent parameters. The most statistically significant descriptor in the correlation equation depends on the cellulose, being pi(S)* for MC, cotton, and eucalyptus, and V(S) for M-cotton and M-eucalyptus. The best correlations were obtained with the same set of four parameters for all celluloses, namely, solvent pKa (or alpha(S)) beta(S), pi(S)*, and V(S), respectively. These results indicate that the supra-molecular structure of the biopolymer, in particular the average sizes of crystallites and micro-pores, and the presence of its chains in parallel (cellulose I) or anti-parallel (cellulose II) arrangements control its swelling. At least for the present biopolymer/solvent systems, use of solvatochromic parameters is a superior alternative to Hildebrand`s solubility parameters and/or Gutmann`s acceptor and donor numbers. The relevance of these results to the accessibility of the hydroxyl groups of cellulose, hence to its reactivity, is briefly discussed.
