Dynamical properties of the U-238-U-238 system at the classical turning point, specifically the distance of closest approach, the relative orientations of the nuclei, and deformations have been studied at the sub-Coulomb energy of E(lab) = 6.07 MeV/nucleon using a classical dynamical model with a variable moment of inertia. Probability of favorable alignment for anomalous positron-electron pair emission through vacuum decay is calculated. The calculated small favorable alignment probability value of 0.116 is found to be enhanced by about 16% in comparison with the results of a similar study using a fixed moment of inertia as well as the results from a semiquantal calculation reported earlier.

It is shown that the action functional S[g, phi] = integral d4 x square-root -g[R/k(1 + klambdaphi2) + partial derivative(mu)phi partial derivative(mu)phi] describes, in general, one and the same classical theory whatever may be the value of the coupling constant lambda.

We study the statistical distribution of quantum energy splittings due to a dynamical tunneling. The system. The annular billiard, has whispering quasimodes due to a discrete symmetry that exists even when chaos is present in the underlying classical dynamics. Symmetric and antisymmetric combinations of these quasimodes correspond to quantum doublet states whose degeneracies decrease as the circles become more eccentric. We construct numerical ensembles composed of splittings for two distinct regimes, one which we call semiclassical for high quantum numbers and high energies where the whispering regions are connected by chaos, and other which we call quantal for low quantum numbers, low energies, and near integrable where dynamical tunneling is not a dominant mechanism. In both cases we observe a variation on the fluctuation amplitudes, but their mean behaviors follow the formula of Leyvraz and Ullmo [J. Phys. A 29, 2529 (1996)]. A description of a three-level collision involving a doublet and a singlet is also provided through a numerical example.

During spermiogenesis, the spermatids of the pimelodid species Pimelodus maculatus and Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum show a central flagellum development, no rotation of the nucleus, and no nuclear fossa formation, in contrast to all previously described spermatids of Teleostei. These characteristics are interpreted as belonging to a new type of spermiogenesis, named here type III, which is peculiar to the family Pimelodidae. In P. maculatus and P. fasciatum, spermatozoa possess a spherical head and no acrosome; their nucleus contains highly condensed, homogeneous chromatin with small electron-lucent areas; and a nuclear fossa is not present. The centriolar complex lies close to the nucleus. The midpiece is small, has no true cytoplasmic channel, and contains many elongate and interconnected vesicles. Several spherical to oblong mitochondria are located around the centriolar complex. The flagellum displays the classical axoneme (9 + 2) and no lateral fins. Only minor differences were observed among the pimelodid species and genera. Otherwise, spermiogenesis and spermatozoa in the two species of Pimelodidae studied exhibit many characteristics that are not found in other siluriform families, mainly the type III spermiogenesis. The electronic states of quantum rings with centerlines of arbitrary shape and non-uniform width in a threading magnetic field are calculated. The solutions of the Schrodinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions are obtained by a variational separation of variables in curvilinear coordinates. We obtain a width profile that compensates for the main effects of the curvature variations in the centerline. Numerical results are shown for circular, elliptical, and limacon-shaped quantum rings. We also show that smooth and tiny variations in the width may strongly affect the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations.

Measurement-based quantum computation is an efficient model to perform universal computation. Nevertheless, theoretical questions have been raised, mainly with respect to realistic noise conditions. In order to shed some light on this issue, we evaluate the exact dynamics of some single-qubit-gate fidelities using the measurement-based quantum computation scheme when the qubits which are used as a resource interact with a common dephasing environment. We report a necessary condition for the fidelity dynamics of a general pure N-qubit state, interacting with this type of error channel, to present an oscillatory behavior, and we show that for the initial canonical cluster state, the fidelity oscillates as a function of time. This state fidelity oscillatory behavior brings significant variations to the values of the computational results of a generic gate acting on that state depending on the instants we choose to apply our set of projective measurements. As we shall see, considering some specific gates that are frequently found in the literature, the fast application of the set of projective measurements does not necessarily imply high gate fidelity, and likewise the slow application thereof does not necessarily imply low gate fidelity. Our condition for the occurrence of the fidelity oscillatory behavior shows that the oscillation presented by the cluster state is due exclusively to its initial geometry. Other states that can be used as resources for measurement-based quantum computation can present the same initial geometrical condition. Therefore, it is very important for the present scheme to know when the fidelity of a particular resource state will oscillate in time and, if this is the case, what are the best times to perform the measurements.

We extend the geometric treatment done for the Majorana-Weyl fermions in two dimensions by Sanielevici and Semenoff to chiral bosons on a circle. For this case we obtain a generalized Floreanini-Jackiw Lagrangian density, and the corresponding gravitational (or Virasoro) anomalies are found as expected. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

The space of labels characterizing the elements of Schwinger's basis for unitary quantum operators is endowed with a structure of symplectic type. This structure is embodied in a certain algebraic cocycle, whose main features are inherited by the symplectic form of classical phase space. In consequence, the label space may be taken as the quantum phase space: It plays, in the quantum case, the same role played by phase space in classical mechanics, some differences coming inevitably from its nonlinear character. © 1990 American Institute of Physics.

We make a change of variables and a time reparametrization in the Schrödinger equation in order to obtain the propagator of a charged oscillator with a time-dependent mass and frequency under the influence of time-varying electric and magnetic fields, in terms of the simple propagators of harmonic oscillators with constant frequencies and masses. We also discuss the Jackiw transformation and others as a particular case of ours. © 1991.

We present a different class of quantum-mechanical potentials. These are midway between the exactly solvable potentials and the quasiexactly ones. Their fundamental feature is that one can find the entire s-wave spectrum of a given potential, provided that some of its parameters are conveniently fixed. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

The theory of macroscopic quantum tunneling is applied to a current-biased dc SQUID which constitutes a system of two interacting quantum degrees of freedom coupled to the environment. The decay probability is obtained in the exponential approximation for the overdamped case. Close to the critical driving force of the system, the decay of the metastable state is determined by a unique instanton solution describing the symmetric decay of the phases in each of the two Josephson juctions. Upon reducing the external driving force a new regime is reached where the instanton splits. The doubling of the decay channels reduces the decreasing of the decay rate in the quantum regime. A current-temperature phase diagram is constructed based on the Landau theory of phase transitions. Depending on the external parameters the system develops either a first- or a second-order transition to the split-instanton regime. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

In analogy with the Liouville case we study the sl3 Toda theory on the lattice and define the relevant quadratic algebra and out of it we recover the discrete W3 algebra. We define an integrable system with respect to the latter and establish the relation with the Toda lattice hierarchy. We compute the relevant continuum limits. Finally we find the quantum version of the quadratic algebra.
