We report on measurements of the adiabatic second-order elastic constants of the off-stoichiometric Ni54Mn23Al23 single-crystalline Heusler alloy. The variation in the temperature dependence of the elastic constants has been investigated across the magnetic transition and over a broad temperature range. Anomalies in the temperature behavior of the elastic constants have been found in the vicinity of the magnetic phase transition. Measurements under applied magnetic field, both isothermal and variable temperature, show that the value of the elastic constants depends on magnetic order, thus giving evidence for magnetoelastic coupling in this alloy system.

Applying a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic Ni50Mn34In16 alloy in the martensitic state induces a structural phase transition to the austenitic state. This is accompanied by a strain which recovers on removing the magnetic field, giving the system a magnetically superelastic character. A further property of this alloy is that it also shows the inverse magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic superelasticity and the inverse magnetocaloric effect in Ni-Mn-In and their association with the first-order structural transition are studied by magnetization, strain, and neutron-diffraction studies under magnetic field.

Introduction: Surgical decision making in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) takes into account primarily clinical symptoms as well as concordant radiological findings. We hypothesized that a wide variation of operative threshold would be found in particular as far as judgment of severity of radiological stenosis is concerned. Patients and methods: The number of surgeons who would proceed to decompression was studied relative to the perceived severity of radiological stenosis based either on measurements of dural sac cross sectional area (DSCA) or on the recently described morphological grading as seen on axial T2 MRI images. A link to an electronic survey page with a set of ten axial T2 MRI images taken from ten patients with either low back pain or LSS were sent to members of three national or international spine societies. Those 10 images were randomly presented initially and re-shuffled on a second page including this time DSCA measurements in mm2, ranging from 14 to 226 mm2, giving a total of 20 images to appraise. Morphological grades were ranging from grade A to D. Surgeons were asked if they would consider decompression given the radiological appearance of stenosis and that symptoms of neurological claudication were severe in patients who were otherwise fit for surgery. Fisher's exact test was performed following dichotomization of data when appropriate. Results: A total of 142 spine surgeons (113 orthopedic spine surgeons, 29 neurosurgeons) responded from 25 countries. A substantial agreement was observed in operating patients with severe (grade C) or extreme (grade D) stenosis as defined by the morphological grade compared to lesser stenosis (A&B) grades (p<0.0001). Decision to operate was not dependent on number of years in practice, medical density in practicing country or specialty although more neurosurgeons would operate on grade C stenosis (p<0.005). Disclosing the DSCA measurement did not alter the decision to operate. Although 20 surgeons only had prior knowledge of the description of the morphological grading, their responses showed no statistically significant difference with those of the remaining 122 physicians. Conclusions: This study showed that surgeons across borders are less influenced by DSCA in their decision making than by the morphological appearance of the dural sac. Classifying LSS according to morphology rather than surface measurements appears to be consistent with current clinical practice.

We study the response of Turing stripe patterns to a simple spatiotemporal forcing. This forcing has the form of a traveling wave and is spatially resonant with the characteristic Turing wavelength. Experiments conducted with the photosensitive chlorine dioxide-iodine-malonic acid reaction reveal a striking symmetry-breaking phenomenon of the intrinsic striped patterns giving rise to hexagonal lattices for intermediate values of the forcing velocity. The phenomenon is understood in the framework of the corresponding amplitude equations, which unveils a complex scenario of dynamical behaviors.

compatible with the usual nonlocal model governed by surface tension that results from a macroscopic description. To explore this discrepancy, we exhaustively analyze numerical integrations of a phase-field model with dichotomic columnar disorder. We find that two distinct behaviors are possible depending on the capillary contrast between the two values of disorder. In a high-contrast case, where interface evolution is mainly dominated by the disorder, an inherent anomalous scaling is always observed. Moreover, in agreement with experimental work, the interface motion has to be described through a local model. On the other hand, in a lower-contrast case, the interface is dominated by interfacial tension and can be well modeled by a nonlocal model. We have studied both spontaneous and forced-flow imbibition situations, giving a complete set of scaling exponents in each case, as well as a comparison to the experimental results.

During the ontogenesis of dorsal root ganglia (DRG), the immunoreactivity to substance P (SP) and calbindin D-28k (CaBP) appears in chickens at embryonic day 5 (E5) and E10 respectively. To establish the birthdates of primary sensory neurons expressing SP or CaBP, chick embryos were given repetitive intra-amniotic injections of [3H]-thymidine. The neuroblasts giving rise to SP-expressing neurons were labeled up to E6 while those generating CaBP-immunoreactive neurons stopped to incorporate [3H]-thymidine before E5.5. This finding indicates that neurons exhibiting distinct phenotypes may originate from neuroblasts which arrest to proliferate at close but distinct stages of development. To determine whether SP and CaBP are co-expressed or not in DRG neurons, chick embryos at E12, E18, and chickens two weeks after hatching were perfused and fixed to detect simultaneously SP- and CaBP-immunoreactivity in DRG sections. The results showed that SP and CaBP were transiently co-expressed by a subset of neurons at E12. Later, however, the SP-immunoreactivity was gradually lost by these ganglion cells, so that the SP- and CaBP-immunoreaction defined two distinct neuronal subpopulations after hatching. In conclusion, most CaBP-immunoreactive DRG cells derive from a subset of neurons in which SP and CaBP are transiently co-localized.

Stress-strain trajectories associated with pseudoelastic behavior of a Cu¿19.4 Zn¿13.1 Al (at.%) single crystal at room temperature have been determined experimentally. For a constant cross-head speed the trajectories and the associated hysteresis behavior are perfectly reproducible; the trajectories exhibit memory properties, dependent only on the values of return points, where transformation direction is reverted. An adapted version of the Preisach model for hysteresis has been implemented to predict the observed trajectories, using a set of experimental first¿order reversal curves as input data. Explicit formulas have been derived giving all trajectories in terms of this data set, with no adjustable parameters. Comparison between experimental and calculated trajectories shows a much better agreement for descending than for ascending paths, an indication of a dissymmetry between the dissipation mechanisms operative in forward and reverse directions of martensitic transformation.

A 43-year-old female patient had an amelanotic single tumor thickening the upper right eyelid and observed since early childhood. Clinically, it appeared as a firm mass, without sharp margins, giving a thickened appearance to the superior eyelid. The ophthalmic clinical examination was normal but some subcutaneous nodules attested to the diffusion of the disease recognized as a limited form of neurofibromatosis 1. Although well tolerated, it gave rise to a cosmetic disturbance and the patient was willing to undergo an excision. A complete surgical excision was performed on the lesions and the pathological study disclosed a typical neurofibroma. Regular observation of the different cutaneous nodules was recommended.
