Socio-cultural messages, body image, and body change strategies in men

The thesis found that men received information about the ideal male body from perceived media messages and peers through encouragement, teasing, or modelled behaviours. Body mass index (BMI) also influenced participant's perceptions of their body-image and the strategies they used to change their shape. Sexual partners generally held positive views of men's body shape and weight. The portfolio examines the barriers experienced by individuals with co-occuring disorders within the current treatment system, by analysing four case studies.

Parental influences upon their children's body image concerns and behaviours

An examination of the influence of parents revealed that sons' and daughters' perceptions of the direct and indirect pressures exerted by both mothers and fathers were more predictive of their body image concerns and body change strategies than the messages reported by parents. Societal constructions of the psycho-legal notion of mental impairment in Victoria

This thesis explored the factors relevant to decision-making when the defence of mental impairment is raised in Victoria. Findings indicate that disorder type, crime outcome, and the relationship between victim and offender were significantly associated with verdict decisions, while offender gender did not play a significant role in responsibility decisions. The portfolio discusses the role of co-morbid psychopathology in the assessment and treatment of veterans with chronic PTSD by presenting four case histories.

Effectiveness of psychological interventions for depressed elderly people in hostels

Thesis: Depression among older adults is a significant health concern. Research involved development and implementation of psychological intervention among older adults living in residential care. Poor participation was encountered amongst residential care facilities and older adults. The research identified barriers impeding provision of care for older adults with mental health concerns. The portfolio presents case studies demonstrating the flow-on effects of negative childhood experiences into adult relationships. The analyses illustrate how difficulties in childhood are associated with the development of depression and anxiety in later life.

Understanding why cancer survivors help others

The research for the thesis examined cancer survivors' reasons for providing peer support to cancer patients, and the impact of this type of helping behaviour has on cancer survivors' quality of life. Results revealed six prominent reasons for providing peer support, and that helping others did not increase survivors' already high quality of life. The portfolio presents the content, facilitator perceptions, participant evaluations and outcomes of four group programs which targeted specific groups of participants.

Exercise dependence and elite Australian athletes

This thesis provides an examination of exercise dependence (EXD) among elite Australian athletes. The research identifies the main symptoms of EXD among elite athletes as excessive training, withdrawal, and continuance behaviours. EXD was found to be associated with irrational beliefs relating to training, low self esteem, and limited social support. The portfolio presents four case studies illustrating the use of solution focused brief counselling with athletes and drawing attention to the utility of a solution focused approach as an effective tool in sport psychology consultancy.

Internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy for erectile dysfunction

This thesis involved the development and evaluation of "Rekindle", an internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for erectile dysfunction (ED). For highly motivated couples, "Rekindle" was more effective than no treatment for improving sexual function and relationships. Most men who completed "Rekindle" had maintained treatment gains at 3-month follow-up. The professional portfolio presented 4 case studies which demonstrate that barriers to recovery from early psychosis are often complex and challenging issues, and that effective strategies need to be implemented to overcome these issues during treatment. When insufficient intervention is provided to address these barriers, the likelihood of successful outcome following early psychosis is significantly reduced.

A peer-focused depression prevention program for preadolescent children

This thesis develops and evaluates the effectiveness of a peer-focused cognitive-behavioural depression prevention program (Kool Kids Program [KKP]) for preadolescent children. It was demonstrated that the KKP was partially effective at reducing depressive symptoms and improving the psychosocial functioning of preadolescent children up to 6 months following intervention. The professional portfolio discusses the unique role of clinical psychologists within multidisciplinary teams and the contribution they make to interdisciplinary collaboration. Four case studies are presented.

Professionals' attributions and referral decisions in cases of domestic violence

This thesis is the first national study of workers who have contact with victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. It highlights that the victim and perpetrator's gender, as well as the relevant professional's agency type and experience, all influenced their attitudes to, and service delivery decisions with, domestic violence-related clients. The portfolio utilises four case studies to examine the way that two Victorian sex offender programs attempt to balance risk-need and good lives principles in the assessment and treatment of sex offenders.

The neuroanatomical correlates of subjective wellbeing following head injury

The thesis found results supporting the involvement of the Right Frontal area of the brain in the subjective wellbeing (SWB) of individuals. Additional results suggested SWB is dependent upon Core Affect, itself dependent upon the Right Parietal area of the brain. These results provide evidence that SWB and Core Affect are based upon a neurological substrate. The portfolio investigated the association between chronic medical conditions and anxiety disorders, and how the occurence of anxiety issues can affect overall psychological adjustment to illness.

A hypothesised model of disordered eating in overweight women

This thesis found that predicted risk factors for disordered eating were similar for overweight and non-overweight women. However, overweight women reported more stigmatisation and body shame, had a higher risk for developing an eating disorder, and were twice as likely to be diagnosed with a subclinical/clinical eating disorder than non-overweight women. The portfolio presents four case studies demonstrating the considerations and challenges of psychologically assessing and treating individuals with chronic health conditions.

Effects of physical activity on depression and anxiety in children

This thesis study examined the direct and indirect effects of physical activity, self-efficacy and peer relations in depression and anxiety in children. No direct relationships between physical activity and symptoms of depression or anxiety were found for either sex. The portfolio, using four clinical health psychology case studies, provides an illustration of the clinical application of the transtheoretical model to four different health issues.

The role of alcohol consumption in recovering drug users

This thesis found that alcohol consumption by illicit drig users has not been well researched. A qualitative study found alcohol was used as a substitute and believed to be related to illicit substance use. While the quantitative study generated no overall consensus, the research highlighted the need to conduct additional studies into substance abuse. The portfolio explored the relationship between maltreatment and the development of Reactive Attachment Disorder through four case studies of child clients.

Readiness to change a problem behaviour : a conceptual framework

The thesis study aims to develop a model of readiness to enter treatment to change problem behaviour by addressing the limitations of previous models. The research shows that a model consisting of personal and social factors, mediated by problem recognition and desire for help accurately assesses readiness to enter treatment. The portfolio examines the broad framework of the Multifactor Offender Readiness Model (MORM) which assesses an offender's readiness to engage in treatment. Four case studies are presented.

The co-residence of children with incarcerated mothers

In a national study this thesis examined the attitudes of key stakeholders about the co-residence of children with incarcerated mothers. A self-administered questionnaire was developed specifically for this research. The majority of respondents were not opposed to child co-residence in principle, conditional on the prison facilities and mothers' parenting competence. The clinical portfolio explored and highlighted practice and organisational issues arising for Victorian correctional services' psychologists when (i) assessing offenders for participation in the "Offence focused problem solving" program, and (ii) formulating treatment plans.Four case studies are presented.
