Investigates what can go wrong when dynamical systems are modelled with a computer. Number theoretic techniques were used to detail the effects "discretization" errors caused by computer round-off had on characteristics of a system. In particular, a relationship was established between the occurrence of long cycles in a system and the classical result known as Artin's conjecture. Algorithms were then developed which eliminated discretization errors.

In this paper, we have proposed a method for 2D image retrieval based on object shapes. The method relies on transforming the 2D images into 3D space based on distance transform. Spherical harmonics are obtained for the 3D data and used as descriptors for the underlying 2D images. The proposed method is compared against two existing methods which use spherical harmonics for shape based retrieval of images. MPEG-7 Still Images Content Set is used for performing experiments; this dataset consists of 3621 still images. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed descriptors is significantly better than other methods in the same category.

This chapter discusses and illustrates some potential applications of discrete-event simulation (DES) techniques in structural reliability and availability analysis, emphasizing the convenience of using probabilistic approaches in modern building and civil engineering practices. After reviewing existing literature on the topic, some advantages of probabilistic techniques over analytical ones are highlighted. Then, we introduce a general framework for performing structural reliability and availability analysis through DES. Our methodology proposes the use of statistical distributions and techniques – such as survival analysis – to model component-level reliability. Then, using failure- and repair-time distributions and information about the structural logical topology (which allows determination of the structural state from their components’ state), structural reliability, and availability information can be inferred. Two numerical examples illustrate some potential applications of the proposed methodology to achieving more reliable and structural designs. Finally, an alternative approach to model uncertainty at component level is also introduced as ongoing work. This new approach is based on the use of fuzzy rule-based systems and it allows the introduction of experts’ opinions and evaluations in our methodology.

We investigate the problem of averaging values on lattices, and in particular on discrete product lattices. This problem arises in image processing when several color values given in RGB, HSL, or another coding scheme, need to be combined. We show how the arithmetic mean and the median can be constructed by minimizing appropriate penalties. We also discuss which of them coincide with the Cartesian product of the standard mean and median.

3D finite element simulations of 9-grain multicrystalline aggregates are performed within the framework of the classical continuum crystal plasticity and discrete dislocation dynamics. The results are processed in a statistical way by ensemble averaging. The comparison is made at three levels: macroscopic stress–strain curves, average stress values per grain, local values of stress and plastic strain. The comparison shows that some similarities are observed in the stress and strain distributions in both simulations approaches. But there are also large discrepancies caused by the discrete nature of plasticity in DDD. The DDD simulations provide higher stress levels in the aggregate due to the small number of dislocation sources and to the stress field induced by individual dislocations.

The scheduling of metal to different casters in a casthouse is a complicated problem, attempting to find the balance between pot-line, crucible carrier, furnace and casting machine capacity. in this paper, a description will be given of a casthouse modelling system designed to test different scenarios for casthouse design and operation. Using discrete-event simulation, the casthouse model incorporates variable arrival times of metal carriers, crucible movements, caster operation and furnace conditions. Each part of the system is individually modelled and synchronised using a series of signals or semaphores. in addition, an easy to operate user interface allows for the modification of key parameters, and analysis of model output. Results from the model will be presented for a case study, which highlights the effect different parameters have on overall casthouse performance. The case study uses past production data from a casthouse to validate the model outputs, with the aim to perform a sensitivity analysis on the overall system. Along with metal preparation times and caster strip-down/setup, the temperature evolution within the furnaces is one key parameter in determining casthouse performance.

Background: Physical activity (PA) is associated with positive cardio-metabolic health and emerging evidence suggests sedentary behavior (SB) may be detrimental to children’s health independent of PA. The primary aim of the Transform-Us! study is to determine whether an 18-month, behavioral and environmental intervention in the school and family settings results in higher levels of PA and lower rates of SB among 8-9 year old children compared with usual practice (post-intervention and 12-months follow-up). The secondary aims are to determine the independent and combined effects of PA and SB on children’s cardio-metabolic health risk factors; identify the factors that mediate the success of the intervention; and determine whether the intervention is cost-effective.
Methods/design: A four-arm cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a 2 × 2 factorial design, with schools as the unit of randomization. Twenty schools will be allocated to one of four intervention groups, sedentary behavior (SB-I), physical activity (PA-I), combined SB and PA (SB+PA-I) or current practice control (C), which will be evaluated among approximately 600 children aged 8-9 years in school year 3 living in Melbourne, Australia. All children in year 3 at intervention schools in 2010 (8-9 years) will receive the intervention over an 18-month period with a maintenance ‘booster’ delivered in 2012 and children at all schools will be invited to participate in the evaluation assessments. To maximize the sample and to capture new students arriving at intervention and control schools, recruitment will be on-going up to the post-intervention time point. Primary outcomes are time spent sitting and in PA assessed via accelerometers and inclinometers and survey.
Discussion: To our knowledge, Transform-Us! is the first RCT to examine the effectiveness of intervention strategies for reducing children’s overall sedentary time, promoting PA and optimizing health outcomes. The integration of consistent strategies and messages to children from teachers and parents in both school and family settings is a critical component of this study, and if shown to be effective, may have a significant impact on educational policies as well as on pedagogical and parenting practices.

In this note, we propose a design for a robust finite-horizon Kalman filtering for discrete-time systems suffering from uncertainties in the modeling parameters and uncertainties in the observations process (missing measurements). The system parameter uncertainties are expected in the state, output and white noise covariance matrices. We find the upper-bound on the estimation error covariance and we minimize the proposed upper-bound.

The research describes a rapid method for the determination of fatty acid (FA) contents in a micro-encapsulated fish-oil (μEFO) supplement by using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic technique and partial least square regression (PLSR) analysis. Using the ATR-FTIR technique, the μEFO powder samples can be directly analysed without any pre-treatment required, and our developed PLSR strategic approach based on the acquired spectral data led to production of a good linear calibration with R2 = 0.99. In addition, the subsequent predictions acquired from an independent validation set for the target FA compositions (i.e., total oil, total omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA) were highly accurate when compared to the actual values obtained from standard GC-based technique, with plots between predicted versus actual values resulting in excellent linear fitting (R2 ⩾ 0.96) in all cases. The study therefore demonstrated not only the substantial advantage of the ATR-FTIR technique in terms of rapidness and cost effectiveness, but also its potential application as a rapid, potentially automated, online monitoring technique for the routine analysis of FA composition in industrial processes when used together with the multivariate.

Random fluctuations of the electrical quantities (electrode potential and cell current) in electrochemical systems commonly are referred to as electrochemical noise (ECN). The ECN signal for the corrosion of mild steel in reinforced concrete specimen was analyzed with the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). The original signal was transformed into a time-frequency phase plane with colors representing the coefficients of the CWT. The signal shows a self-similarity structure in the phase plane. Through this way, the chaotic nature of corrosion process is manifested.

In this paper, the Fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) neural network is used to classify metal detector signals into different categories for automated target discrimination. Feature extraction of the metal detector signals is conducted using a wavelet transform technique. The FAM neural network is then employed to classify the extracted features into different target groups. A series of experiments using individual FAM networks and a voting FAM network is conducted. Promising classification accuracy rates are obtained from using individual and voting FAM networks, respectively. The experimental outcomes positively demonstrate the effectiveness of the generated features, and of the FAM network in classifying metal detector signals for automated target discrimination tasks.
