Paleomagnetic inclination, declination and relative paleointensity were reconstructed from the sediments of Laguna Potrok Aike in the framework of the International Continental scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) Potrok Aike maar lake Sediment Archive Drilling prOject (PASADO). Here we present the u-channel-based full vector paleomagnetic field reconstruction since 51.2 ka cal BP. The relative paleointensity proxy (RPI) was built by normalising the natural remanent magnetisation with the anhysteretic remanent magnetisation using the average ratio at 4 demagnetisation steps part of the ChRM interval (NRM/ARM10e40 mT). A grain size influence on the RPI was removed using a correction based on the linear relationship between the RPI and the median destructive field of the natural remanent magnetisation (MDFNRM). The new record is compared with other lacustrine and marine records and stacks from the mid- to high-latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere, revealing consistent millennial-scale variability, the identification of the Laschamp and possibly the Mono Lake geomagnetic excursions, and a direction swing possibly associated to the Hilina Pali excursion at 20 ka cal BP. Nonetheless, a global-scale comparison with other high-resolution records located on the opposite side of the Earth and with various dipole field references hint at a different behaviour of the geomagnetic field around southern South America at 46 ka cal BP.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 115 was designed to study Neogene sedimentation history in the western Indian Ocean Basin as well as the Cenozoic evolution of the Reunion hotspot. We describe the paleomagnetic analysis of the sediments recovered on this leg, focusing on the sites that provided the most readily interpretable data: Sites 706, 709, 710, and 711. Sediments from Site 706 show no reversals but appear to give a reliable reversed polarity primary direction, judged on the basis of the demagnetization behavior of individual samples as well as from the results of a fold test formulated by comparing the two holes drilled at this site. Magnetic polarity stratigraphy in sediments from Site 709 can be deduced in two limited sections of Pliocene-Pleistocene and Oligocene-Miocene age. Sediments recovered at Site 710 (and, to a lesser extent, Site 711) render a relatively continuous magnetic polarity stratigraphy that spans most of the Neogene and adds significantly to the body of data available to address problems in Miocene geochronology. In addition to these magnetostratigraphic results, the paleomagnetism of these sediments can be used to determine paleolatitude. Using the most reliable inclination measurements from Sites 706, 710, and 711, we compared paleomagnetic estimates of paleolatitude with estimates derived from a hotspot-based absolute plate motion model. Our data, which covers the interval since 33 Ma, shows that paleolatitudes calculated with the geocentric axial dipole assumption are in general accord with the hotspot predictions. However, a correction for the long-term nondipole field brings the paleomagnetic results into even better agreement with plate motions that are based on the fixity of African hotspots.

Climate phenomena like the monsoon system, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are interconnected via various feedback mechanisms and control the climate of the Indian Ocean and its surrounding continents on various timescales. The eastern tropical Indian Ocean is a key area for the interplay of these phenomena and for reconstructing their past changes and forcing mechanisms. Here we present records of upper ocean thermal gradient, thermocline temperatures (TT) and relative abundances of planktic foraminifera in core SO 189-39KL taken off western Sumatra (0°47.400' S, 99°54.510' E) for the last 8 ka that we use as proxies for changes in upper ocean structure. The records suggest a deeper thermocline between 8 ka and ca 3 ka compared to the late Holocene. We find a shoaling of the thermocline after 3 ka, most likely indicating an increased occurrence of upwelling during the late Holocene compared to the mid-Holocene which might represent changes in the IOD-like mean state of the Indian Ocean with a more negative IOD-like mean state during the mid-Holocene and a more positive IOD-like mean state during the past 3 ka. This interpretation is supported by a transient Holocene climate model simulation in which an IOD-like mode is identified that involves an insolation-forced long-term trend of increasing anomalous surface easterlies over the equatorial eastern Indian Ocean.

Based on discrete samples, we report new high-resolution records of the ~185 kyr Iceland Basin (IB) geomagnetic excursion from Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) Site 1063 on the Bermuda Rise (sedimentation rate 32 cm/kyr) and from ODP Site 983 in the far North Atlantic (sedimentation rate 18 cm/kyr). Two records from Holes 1063A and 1063B are very consistent, and provide the highest resolution of the detailed field behaviour during the IB excursion obtained so far. Inclination records from Holes 983B and 983C in the far North Atlantic are also very consistent, whereas declination anomalies deviate more notably. The pseudo-Thellier (PT) technique was applied along with more conventional palaeointensity proxies (NRM/ARM and NRM/kappa) to recover relative palaeointensity (RPI) estimates from Hole 1063A and Hole 983B. As expected, these proxies indicate that the field intensity generally dropped at both sites during the IB excursion, but also that the history of RPI from the two sites is different. VGPs from Site 1063 indicate that the field at this location experienced some stop-and-go behaviour between patches of intense vertical flux over North America and the tip of South America, areas which coincide fairly well with patches of preferred transitional VGP clustering from reversals and zones of high seismic velocity in the lower mantle. Changes in RPI at this location were generally gradual, possibly due to the proximity of these flux patches, and the first period of VGP-clustering over North America was accompanied by a conspicuous increase in RPI. VGPs from Site 983 track along a different path, and the associated RPI changes are very abrupt and completely synchronous with the onset and termination of the excursion. The differing VGP paths from Sites 1063 and 983 indicate that the global field structure during the IB excursion was not dominated by a single dipole.

Holocene climate variability is investigated in the North Pacific and North Atlantic realms, using alkenone-derived sea-surface temperature (SST) records as well as a millennial scale simulation with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (AOGCM). The alkenone SST data indicate a temperature increase over almost the entire North Pacific from 7 cal kyr BP to the present. A dipole pattern with a continuous cooling in the northeastern Atlantic and a warming in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and the northern Red Sea is detected in the North Atlantic realm. Similarly, SST variations are opposite in sign between the northeastern Pacific and the northeastern Atlantic. A 2300 year long AOGCM climate simulation reveals a similar SST seesaw between the northeastern Pacific and the northeastern Atlantic on centennial time scales. Our analysis of the alkenone SST data and the model results suggests fundamental inter-oceanic teleconnections during the Holocene.

Shell chemistry of planktic foraminifera and the alkenone unsaturation index in 69 surface sediment samples in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean off West and South Indonesia were studied. Results were compared to modern hydrographic data in order to assess how modern environmental conditions are preserved in sedimentary record, and to determine the best possible proxies to reconstruct seasonality, thermal gradient and upper water column characteristics in this part of the world ocean. Our results imply that alkenone-derived temperatures record annual mean temperatures in the study area. However, this finding might be an artifact due to the temperature limitation of this proxy above 28°C. Combined study of shell stable oxygen isotope and Mg/Ca ratio of planktic foraminifera suggests that Globigerinoides ruber sensu stricto (s.s.), G. ruber sensu lato (s.l.), and G. sacculifer calcify within the mixed-layer between 20 m and 50 m, whereas Globigerina bulloides records mixed-layer conditions at ~50 m depth during boreal summer. Mean calcifications of Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, and Globorotalia tumida occur at the top of the thermocline during boreal summer, at ~75 m, 75-100 m, and 100 m, respectively. Shell Mg/Ca ratios of all species show a significant correlation with temperature at their apparent calcification depths and validate the application of previously published temperature calibrations, except for G. tumida that requires a regional Mg/Ca-temperature calibration (Mg/Ca = 0.41 exp (0.068*T)). We show that the difference in Mg/Ca-temperatures of the mixed-layer species and the thermocline species, particularly between G. ruber s.s. (or s.l.) and P. obliquiloculata, can be applied to track changes in the upper water column stratification. Our results provide critical tools for reconstructing past changes in the hydrography of the study area and their relation to monsoon, El Niño-Southern Oscillation, and the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode.

The response of the tropical climate in the Indian Ocean realm to abrupt climate change events in the North Atlantic Ocean is contentious. Repositioning of the intertropical convergence zone is thought to have been responsible for changes in tropical hydroclimate during North Atlantic cold spells1, 2, 3, 4, 5, but the dearth of high-resolution records outside the monsoon realm in the Indian Ocean precludes a full understanding of this remote relationship and its underlying mechanisms. Here we show that slowdowns of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation during Heinrich stadials and the Younger Dryas stadial affected the tropical Indian Ocean hydroclimate through changes to the Hadley circulation including a southward shift in the rising branch (the intertropical convergence zone) and an overall weakening over the southern Indian Ocean. Our results are based on new, high-resolution sea surface temperature and seawater oxygen isotope records of well-dated sedimentary archives from the tropical eastern Indian Ocean for the past 45,000 years, combined with climate model simulations of Atlantic circulation slowdown under Marine Isotope Stages 2 and 3 boundary conditions. Similar conditions in the east and west of the basin rule out a zonal dipole structure as the dominant forcing of the tropical Indian Ocean hydroclimate of millennial-scale events. Results from our simulations and proxy data suggest dry conditions in the northern Indian Ocean realm and wet and warm conditions in the southern realm during North Atlantic cold spells.

Glacier thickness is an important factor in the course of glacier retreat in a warming climate. Thiese study data presents the results (point data) of GPR surveys on 66 Austrian mountain glaciers carried out between 1995 and 2014. The glacier areas range from 0.001 to 18.4 km**2, and their ice thickness has been surveyed with an average density of 36 points/km**2 . The glacier areas and surface elevations refer to the second Austrian glacier inventory (mapped between 1996 and 2002). According to the glacier state recorded in the second glacier inventory, the 64 glaciers cover an area of 223.3±3.6 km**3. Maps of glacier thickness have been calculated by Fischer and Kuhn (2013) with a mean thickness of 50±3 m and contain an glacier volume of 11.9±1.1 km**3. The mean maximum ice thickness is 119±5 m. The ice thickness measurements have been carried out with the transmitter of Narod and Clarke (1994) combined with restively loaded dipole antennas (Wu and King, 1965; Rose and Vickers, 1974) at central wavelengths of 6.5 (30 m antenna length) and 4.0 MHz (50 m antenna length). The signal was recorded trace by trace with an oscilloscope. 168 m/µs as used by Haeberli et al. (1982), Bauder (2001), and Narod and Clarke (1994), the signal velocity in air is assumed to be 300 m/µs. Details on the method can be are found in Fischer and Kuhn (2013), as well as Span et al. (2005) and Fischer et al. (2007).

On the basis of studies of Holocene samples, submarine basaltic glass (SBG) is thought to be an ideal paleointensity recorder because it contains unaltered single domain magnetic inclusions that yield Thellier paleointensity data of exceptional quality. To be useful as a recorder of the long-term geomagnetic field, older SBG must retain these optimal properties. Here, we examine this issue through rock magnetic and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analyses of Cretaceous SBG recovered at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1203 (northwestern Pacific Ocean). These SBG samples have very low natural remanent magnetization intensities (NRM <50 nAm**2/g) and TEM analyses indicate a correspondingly low concentration of crystalline inclusions. Thellier experiments on samples with the strongest NRM intensity (>5*10**-11 Am**2) show a rapid acquisition of thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) with respect to NRM demagnetization. Taken at face value, this behavior implies magnetization in a very weak (617 WT) ambient field. But monitoring of magnetic hysteresis properties during the Thellier experiments (on subsamples of the SBG samples used for paleointensity determinations) indicates systematic variations in values over the same temperature range where the rapid TRM acquisition is observed. A similar change in properties during heating is observed on monitor SBG specimens using low-temperature data: with progressive heatings the Verwey transition becomes more distinct. We suggest that these experimental data record the partial melting and neocrystallization of magnetic grains in SBG during the thermal treatments required by the Thellier method, resulting in paleointensity values biased to low values. We further propose that this process is pronounced in Cretaceous and Jurassic SBG (relative to Holocene SBG) because devitrification on geologic time scales (i.e., tens of millions of years) lowers the transition temperature at which the neocrystallization can commence. Magnetic hysteresis monitoring may provide a straightforward means of detecting the formation of new magnetic inclusions in SBG during Thellier experiments.

Freshwater in the Arctic Ocean plays an important role in the regional ocean circulation, sea ice, and global climate. From salinity observed by a variety of platforms, we are able, for the first time, to estimate a statistically reliable liquid freshwater trend from monthly gridded fields over all upper Arctic Ocean basins. From 1992 to 2012 this trend was 600±300 km**3/yr. A numerical model agrees very well with the observed freshwater changes. A decrease in salinity made up about two thirds of the freshwater trend and a thickening of the upper layer up to one third. The Arctic Ocean Oscillation index, a measure for the regional wind stress curl, correlated well with our freshwater time series. No clear relation to Arctic Oscillation or Arctic Dipole indices could be found. Following other observational studies, an increased Bering Strait freshwater import to the Arctic Ocean, a decreased Davis Strait export, and enhanced net sea ice melt could have played an important role in the freshwater trend we observed.

Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1308 (central North Atlantic) records paleomagnetic directional and relative paleointensity (RPI) variations for the last 1.5 Myr, in 110 m of the sediment sequence at a mean sedimentation rate of 7.3 cm/kyr. A detailed benthic oxygen isotope record was combined with RPI to produce an integrated, high-resolution magneto-isotopic stratigraphy for Site U1308. Apart from the well-known polarity reversals in this interval, the Punaruu excursion is recorded at 1092 ka and the Cobb Mountain Subchron in the 1182-1208 ka interval. The paleointensity proxies are determined as slopes of NRM versus ARM and NRM versus ARMAQ (ARM acquisition) with linear correlation coefficients to monitor the quality of the linear fit. The RPI record for Site U1308 is compared with the three other paleointensity records (one from the Western Equatorial Pacific and two from the North Atlantic) that cover the same time interval and have accompanying oxygen isotope records. The Match protocol of Lisiecki and Lisiecki (2002) is used to optimize the correlation of paleointensity records. Beginning with the original (published) age models for each record, the Match routine is used to optimize the RPI correlations to Site U1308, with checks to ensure compatibility with oxygen isotope records. Squared wavelet coherence (WTC) indicates significant improvement in RPI (and oxygen isotope) correlations after matching each RPI record to Site U1308, particularly for periods > 10 kyr. The level of coherence for the Atlantic RPI records and the lower resolution Pacific record implies synchronous global variability (at scales > 10 kyr) that can be attributed to the axial dipole geomagnetic field.

Fano resonances (FRs) are produced when a discrete state is coupled with a continuum. In addition to fundamental scientific interests, FRs in plasmonic systems give rise to the so-called plasmon-induced transparency. In this work we have studied the evolution of dipole-dipole all-plasmonic FRs in symmetric multilayered nanoshells as the function of their geometrical parameters. We demonstrate that symmetry breaking is not mandatory for controlling the Fano resonance in such multilayered nanoshells. Generation of FRs in these symmetric nanostructures presents clear advantages over their asymmetric counterparts, as they are easier to fabricate and can be used in a wider range of technological applications.

An electrodynamic tether system for power generation at Jupiter is presented that allows extracting energy from Jupiter's corotating plasmasphere while leaving the system orbital energy unaltered to first order. The spacecraft is placed in a polar orbit with the tether spinning in the orbital plane so that the resulting Lorentz force, neglecting Jupiter's magnetic dipole tilt, is orthogonal to the instantaneous velocity vector and orbital radius, hence affecting orbital inclination rather than orbital energy. In addition, the electrodynamic tether subsystem, which consists of two radial tether arms deployed from the main central spacecraft, is designed in such a way as to extract maximum power while keeping the resulting Lorentz torque constantly null. The power-generation performance of the system and the effect on the orbit inclination is evaluated analytically for different orbital conditions and verified numerically. Finally, a thruster-based inclination-compensation maneuver at apoapsis is added, resulting in an efficient scheme to extract energy from the plasmasphere of the planet with minimum propellant consumption and no inclination change. A tradeoff analysis is conducted showing that, depending on tether size and orbit characteristics, the system performance can be considerably higher than conventional power-generation methods.
