Recent developments in micro- and nanoscale 3D fabrication techniques have enabled the creation of materials with a controllable nanoarchitecture that can have structural features spanning 5 orders of magnitude from tens of nanometers to millimeters. These fabrication methods in conjunction with nanomaterial processing techniques permit a nearly unbounded design space through which new combinations of nanomaterials and architecture can be realized. In the course of this work, we designed, fabricated, and mechanically analyzed a wide range of nanoarchitected materials in the form of nanolattices made from polymer, composite, and hollow ceramic beams. Using a combination of two-photon lithography and atomic layer deposition, we fabricated samples with periodic and hierarchical architectures spanning densities over 4 orders of magnitude from ρ=0.3-300kg/m3 and with features as small as 5nm. Uniaxial compression and cyclic loading tests performed on different nanolattice topologies revealed a range of novel mechanical properties: the constituent nanoceramics used here have size-enhanced strengths that approach the theoretical limit of materials strength; hollow aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanolattices exhibited ductile-like deformation and recovered nearly completely after compression to 50% strain when their wall thicknesses were reduced below 20nm due to the activation of shell buckling; hierarchical nanolattices exhibited enhanced recoverability and a near linear scaling of strength and stiffness with relative density, with E∝ρ1.04 and σy∝ρ1.17 for hollow Al2O3 samples; periodic rigid and non-rigid nanolattice topologies were tested and showed a nearly uniform scaling of strength and stiffness with relative density, marking a significant deviation from traditional theories on “bending” and “stretching” dominated cellular solids; and the mechanical behavior across all topologies was highly tunable and was observed to strongly correlate with the slenderness λ and the wall thickness-to-radius ratio t/a of the beams. These results demonstrate the potential of nanoarchitected materials to create new highly tunable mechanical metamaterials with previously unattainable properties.

The evolution of polymer based nanoparticles as a drug delivery carrier via pharmaceutical nano/microencapsulation has greatly promoted the development of nano- and micro-medicine in the past few decades. Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) and chitosan, which are biodegradable and biocompatible polymers, have been approved by both the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicine Agency (EMA), making them ideal biomaterials that can be advanced from laboratory development to clinical oral and parental administrations. PLGA and chitosan encapsulated nanoparticles (NPs) have successfully been developed as new oral drug delivery systems with demonstrated high efficacy. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the fabrication of PLGA and chitosan particulate systems using nano/microencapsulation methods, the current progress and the future outlooks of the nanoparticulate drug delivery systems. Especially, we focus on the formulations and nano/micro-encapsulation techniques using top-down techniques. It also addresses how the different phases including the organic and aqueous ones in the emulsion system interact with each other and subsequently influence the properties of the drug delivery system. Besides, surface modification strategies which can effectively engineer intrinsic physicochemical properties are summarised. Finally, future perspectives and potential directions of PLGA and chitosan nano/microencapsulated drug systems are outlined.

Concerns about the environment and increasing awareness about sustainability issues are driving the push for developing new materials that incorporate renewable sustainable resources. Th is has resulted in the use of natural fi bers for developing natural fi ber-reinforced polymer composites (NFRPCs). A fundamental understanding of the fi ber-fi ber and fi ber-matrix interface is critical to the design and manufacture of polymer composite materials because stress transfer between load-bearing fi bers can occur at the both of these interfaces. Effi cient stress transfer from the matrix to the fi ber will result in polymer composites exhibiting suitable mechanical and thermal performance. Th e development of new techniques has facilitated a better understanding of the governing forces that occur at the interface between matrix and natural fi ber. Th e use of surfacemodification is seen as a critical processing parameter for developing new materials, and plasma-based modifi cation techniques are gaining more prominence from an environmental point of view, as well as a practical approach.

Two solution processable, non-fullerene electron acceptors, 2,2′-(((2,7-dioctyl-1,3,6,8-tetraoxo-1,2,3,6,7,8-exahydrobenzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-4,9-diyl)bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl))bis(methanylylidene))dimalononitrile (R1) and (2Z,2′Z)-3,3′-((2,7-dioctyl-1,3,6,8-tetraoxo-1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydrobenzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-4,9-diyl)bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl))bis(2-(4-nitrophenyl) acrylonitrile) (R2), comprised of central naphthalene diimide and two different terminal accepting functionalities, malononitrile and 2-(4-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile, respectively, were designed and synthesised. The central and terminal accepting functionalities were connected via a mild conjugated thiophene linker. Both of the new materials (R1 and R2) displayed high thermal stability and were found to have energy levels matching those of the archetypal electron donor poly(3-hexylthiophene). A simple, solution-processable bulk-heterojunction device afforded a promising power conversion efficiency of 2.24% when R2 was used as a non-fullerene electron acceptor along with the conventional donor polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene). To the best of our knowledge, the materials reported herein are the first examples in the literature where synchronous use of such accepting blocks is demonstrated for the design and development of efficient non-fullerene electron acceptors.

Nanocomposites of polypropylene (PP) and polypropylene/styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS) blends with exfoliated graphene nanoplatelets (xGnP) were prepared by melt-mixing method. The incorporation of xGnP increased the stiffness and crystallinity of PP at the expense of toughness and the molecular mobility. The effect of addition of SEBS on the mechanical, viscoelastic, thermal degradation and crystallization properties of PP/xGnP composites was studied. The addition of SEBS into PP transformed the phase structure and distribution of xGnP in the PP matrix. SEM micrographs revealed that SEBS polymer chains formed a coating over the graphene nanoplatelets, which strengthened the interface between the filler and the matrix, and improved the dispersion and distribution of the filler throughout the matrix.

Despite great advances, it remains highly attractive but challenging to create high-performance polymeric materials combining excellent flame-retardancy and outstanding thermal, mechanical and electrical properties. We herein demonstrate a novel strategy for fabricating a multifunctional nano-additive (Br-Sb2O3@RGO) based on graphene decorated with bromine and nano-Sb2O3. Cone calorimetric tests show that incorporating 10 wt% Br-Sb2O3@RGO into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) strikingly prolongs the time to ignition and decreases the peak heat release rate by 72%. Besides, tensile strength and Young's modulus are enhanced by 37% and 820%, respectively. Meanwhile, the electric conductibility is increased by eleven orders of magnitude relative to the TPU matrix. This work provides a promising strategy for addressing the critical bottleneck with the existing flame retardants that only enhance flame retardancy at the expense of mechanical properties of polymeric materials. As-prepared high-performance TPU composites are expected to find many applications, especially in aerospace, tissue engineering, and cables and wires.

The study and preservation of museum collections requires complete knowledge and understanding of constituent materials that can be natural, synthetic, or semi-synthetic polymers. In former times, objects were incorporated in museum collections and classified solely by their appearance. New studies, prompted by severe degradation processes or conservation-restoration actions, help shed light on the materiality of objects that can contradict the original information or assumptions. The selected case study presented here is of a box dating from the beginning of the 20th century that belongs to the Portuguese National Ancient Art Museum. Museum curators classified it as a tortoiseshell box decorated with gold applications solely on the basis of visual inspection and the information provided by the donor. This box has visible signs of degradation with white veils, initially assumed to be the result of biological degradation of a proteinaceous matrix. This paper presents the methodological rationale behind this study and proposes a totally non-invasive methodology for the identification of polymeric materials in museum artifacts. The analysis of surface leachates using 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) complemented by in situ attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) allowed for full characterization of the object s substratum. The NMR technique unequivocally identified a great number of additives and ATR FT-IR provided information about the polymer structure and while also confirming the presence of additives. The pressure applied during ATR FT-IR spectroscopy did not cause any physical change in the structure of the material at the level of the surface (e.g., color, texture, brightness, etc.). In this study, variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (VP-SEM-EDS) was also used to obtain the elemental composition of the metallic decorations. Additionally, microbiologic and enzymatic assays were performed in order to identify the possible biofilm composition and understand the role of microorganisms in the biodeterioration process. Using these methodologies, the box was correctly identified as being made of cellulose acetate plastic with brass decorations and the white film was identified as being composed mainly of polymer exudates, namely sulphonamides and triphenyl phosphate.
