Study of H/D exchange rates to derive the strength of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in halo substituted organic building blocks: An NMR spectroscopic investigation

Rates of hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy are utilized to derive the strength of hydrogen bonds and to monitor the electronic effects in the site-specific halogen substituted benzamides and anilines. The theoretical fitting of the time dependent variation of the integral areas of H-1 NMR resonances to the first order decay function permitted the determination of HID exchange rate constants (k) and their precise half-lives (t(1/2)) with high degree of reproducibility. The comparative study also permitted the unambiguous determination of relative strength of hydrogen bonds and the contribution from electronic effects on the HID exchange rate. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Network integration for international mergers and Acquisitions

Business activities are increasingly taking place across geographical and ownership boundaries. Post-Merger & Acquisition Integration (PMI) processes are more challenging in network organisations due to the extra complexity and interdependency associated with networks. However, network integration issues are not well addressed in the traditional M&A literature or the network organisation literature. Based on ten in-depth case studies across key industry sectors, this research identifies the essential network integration issues for international M&As with a configuration concept, and demonstrates different network integration patterns according to M&A objectives for growth and efficiency. This paper extends the theoretical understanding of PMI for network organisations. It can also provide practical guidance for managers to assess the feasibility of an M&A transition or to go through the PMI process successfully. Copyright © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

A comparative study of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor gate dielectrics for solution-processed polymer thin-film transistor circuit integration

This paper considers plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposited (PECVD) silicon nitride (SiNx) and silicon oxide (SiOx) as gate dielectrics for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), with solution-processed poly[5, 5′ -bis(3-dodecyl-2-thienyl)-2, 2′ -bithiophene] (PQT-12) as the active semiconductor layer. We examine transistors with SiNx films of varying composition deposited at 300 °C as well as 150 °C for plastic compatibility. The transistors show over 100% (two times) improvement in field-effect mobility as the silicon content in SiNx increases, with mobility (μFE) up to 0.14 cm2 /V s and on/off current ratio (ION / IOFF) of 108. With PECVD SiOx gate dielectric, preliminary devices exhibit a μFE of 0.4 cm2 /V s and ION / IOFF of 108. PQT-12 OTFTs with PECVD SiNx and SiOx gate dielectrics on flexible plastic substrates are also presented. These results demonstrate the viability of using PECVD SiN x and SiOx as gate dielectrics for OTFT circuit integration, where the low temperature and large area deposition capabilities of PECVD films are highly amenable to integration of OTFT circuits targeted for flexible and lightweight applications. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Integration of holographic sensors into microfluidics for the real-time pH sensing of L. casei metabolism

We describe developments in the integration of analyte specific holographic sensors into PDMS-based microfluidic devices for the purpose of continuous, low-impact monitoring of extra-cellular change in micro-bioreactors. Holographic sensors respond to analyte concentration via volume change, which makes their reduction in size and integration into spatially confined fluidics difficult. Through design and process modification many of these constraints have been addressed, and a microfluidics-based device capable of real-time monitoring of the pH change caused by Lactobacillus casei fermentation is presented as a general proof-of-concept for a wide array of possible devices.

La cuestión de los fundamentos en la ética de Lonergan

Resumen: En este artículo se explica cómo a partir del método trascendental de Lonergan surge una comprensión de la ética cómo ética existencial, la cual nos invita a dejar a un lado las categorías metafísicas-abstractas y reflexionar éticamente usando categorías que surjan de los actos de nuestra conciencia. La conciencia moral se presenta distintiva en cuanto a la decisión, inclusiva en cuanto que integra los niveles del entender y del juzgar y elevada en cuanto que está abierta a la posibilidad de una integración superior, puesto que la noción trascendental de valor puede ser enriquecida intrínsecamente con la experiencia religiosa de estar enamorado de un modo irrestricto.La explicitación de los fundamentos a partir del método trascendental permite tener en cuenta la realidad del hombre como ser histórico en devenir e integra la experiencia moral y religiosa a la comprensión del actuar ético. De este modo la reflexión ética surge a partir de la historia vividaen la cual se manifiesta el hacerse a sí mismo de los sujetos y la auto-constitución de lavida moral de una comunidad o de un pueblo.

Building the perfect 3D hologram

A new liquid crystal device structure has been developed using a vertically grown Multi-Wall Carbon NanoTube (MWCNT) as a 3D electrode structure, which allows complicated phase only hologram to be displayed using conventional liquid crystal materials. The nanotubes act as an individual electrode sites that generate an electric field profile, dictating the refractive index profile with the liquid crystal cell. Changing the electric field applied makes it possible to tune the properties to modulate the light in an ideal kinoform. A perfect 3D image can be generated by a computer generated hologram by using the diffraction of the light from the hologram pixels to create an optical wave front that appears to come from 3D object. A multilevel phase modulating device based on nematic LC's is also under progress, which will be used with the LC/CNT devices on an LCOS backplane to project a full 3D image from the kinoform.
