Despite its recreational and commercial importance, the movement patterns and spawning habitats of winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) in the Gulf of Maine are poorly understood. To address these uncertainties, 72 adult winter flounder (27–48 cm) were fitted with acoustic transmitters and tracked by passive telemetry in the southern Gulf of Maine between 2007 and 2009. Two sympatric contingents of adult winter flounder were observed, which exhibited divergent spawning migrations. One contingent remained in coastal waters during the spawning season, while a smaller contingent of winter flounder was observed migrating to estuarine habitats. Estuarine residence times were highly variable, and ranged from 2 to 91 days (mean=28 days). Flounder were nearly absent from the estuary during the fall and winter months and were most abundant in the estuary from late spring to early summer. The observed seasonal movements appeared to be strongly related to water temperature. This is the first study to investigate the seasonal distribution, migration, and spawning behavior of adult winter flounder in the Gulf of Maine by using passive acoustic telemetry. This approach offered valuable insight into the life history of this species in nearshore and estuarine habitats and improved the information available for the conservation and management of this species.

A description of the foraging habitat of a cetacean species is critical for conservation and effective management. We used a fine-scale microhabitat approach to examine patterns in bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) foraging distribution in relation to dissolved oxygen, turbidity, salinity, water depth, water temperature, and distance from shore measurements in a highly turbid estuary on the northern Gulf of Mexico. In general, environmental variation in the Barataria Basin marine environment comprises three primary axes of variability (i.e., factors: temperature and dissolved oxygen, salinity and turbidity, and distance and depth) that represent seasonal, spatial-seasonal, and spatial scales, respectively. Foraging sites were differentiated from nonforaging sites by significant differences among group size, temperature, turbidity, and season. Habitat selection analysis on individual variables indicated that foraging was more frequently observed in waters 4–6 m deep, 200–500 m from shore, and at salinity values of around 20 psu. This fine-scale and multivariate approach represents a useful method of exploring the complexity, gradation, and detail of the relationships between environmental variables and the foraging distribution patterns of bottlenose dolphin.

Using data collected simultaneously from a trawl and a hydrophone, we found that temporal and spatial trends in densities of juvenile Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) in the Neuse River estuary in North Carolina can be identified by monitoring their sound production. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MA NCOVA) revealed that catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of Atlantic croaker had a significant relationship with the dependent variables of sound level and peak frequency of Atlantic croaker calls. Tests of between-subject correspondence failed to detect relationships between CPUE and either of the call parameters, but statistical power was low. Williamson’s index of spatial overlap indicated that call detection rate (expressed by a 0–3 calling index) was correlated in time and space with Atlantic croaker CPUE. The correspondence between acoustic parameters and trawl catch rates varied by month and by habitat. In general, the calling index had a higher degree of overlap with this species’ density than did the received sound level of their calls. Classification and regression tree analysis identified calling index as the strongest correlate of CPUE. Passive acoustics has the potential to be an inexpensive means of identifying spatial and temporal trends in abundance for soniferous fish species.

We investigated estuarine spatial and temporal overlap of wild and marked hatchery chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) fry; the latter included two distinct size groups released near the Taku River estuary (Taku Inlet) in Southeast Alaska (early May releases of ~ 1.9 g and late May releases of ~ 3.9 g wet weight). Our objectives were to compare abundance, body size, and condition of wild chum salmon fry and hatchery chum salmon fry raised under early and late rearing strategies in different habitats of Taku Inlet and to document environmental factors that could potentially explain the distribution, size, and abundance of these chum salmon fr y. We used a sampling design stratified into inner and outer inlet and neritic and littoral habitats. Hatchery fry were rare in the inner estuary in both years but outnumbered wild fry 20:1 in the outer estuary. Hatchery fry were significantly larger than wild fry in both littoral and neritic samples. Abundances of wild and hatchery fry were positively correlated in the outer inlet, indicating the formation of mixed schools of hatchery and wild fry. Spatial and temporal overlap was greatest between wild and early hatchery fry in the outer inlet in both habitats. The early hatchery release coincided with peak abundances of wild fry in the outer inlet, and the distribution of wild and early hatchery fry overlapped for about three weeks. Our results demonstrate that the timing of release of hatchery fry may affect interactions with wild fry.

Data on the trophic dynamics of fishes are needed for management of ecosystems such as Chesapeake Bay. Summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus) are an abundant seasonal resident of the bay and have the potential to impact foodweb dynamics. Analyses of diet data for late juvenile and adult summer flounder collected from 2002−2006 in Chesapeake Bay were conducted to characterize the role of this flatfish in this estuary and to contribute to our understanding of summer flounder trophic dynamics throughout its range. Despite the diversity of prey, nearly half of the diet comprised mysid shrimp (Neomysis spp.) and bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli). Ontogenetic differences in diet and an increase in diet diversity with increasing fish size were documented. Temporal (inter- and intra-annual) changes were also detected, as well as trends in diet reflecting peaks in abundance and diversity of prey. The preponderance of fishes in the diet of summer flounder indicates that this species is an important piscivorous predator in Chesapeake Bay.

We determined the dis-tribution of multiple (n=68; 508−978 mm total length [TL]) striped bass (Morone saxatilis) along the estua-rine salinity gradient in the Mullica River−Great Bay in southern New Jersey over two years to determine the diversity of habitat use and the movements of striped bass. Ultrasoni-cally tagged fish were detected in this estuarine area by means of wireless hydrophones deployed at four gates inside the entrance of the study area and farther up to tidal freshwater (38 km). Numerous individuals frequently departed and returned to the estuary, primarily in the spring and late fall over periods of 15−731 days at liberty. The period of residency and degree of movement of individuals to and from the estuary varied extensively among seasons and years. The diversity of movements in and out of, as well as within, the estuary differed from the less-complex patterns reported in earlier studies, perhaps because of the comprehensive and synoptic nature of this study.

We investigated age, growth, and ontogenetic effects on the proportionality of otolith size to fish size in laboratory-reared delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) from the San Francisco Bay estuary. Delta smelt larvae were reared from hatching in laboratory mesocosms for 100 days. Otolith increments from known-age fish were enumerated to validate that growth increments were deposited daily and to validate the age of fish at first ring formation. Delta smelt were found to lay down daily ring increments; however, the first increment did not form until six days after hatching. The relationship between otolith size and fish size was not biased by age or growth-rate effects but did exhibit an interruption in linear growth owing to an ontogenetic shift at the postflexon stage. To back-calculate the size-at-age of individual fish, we modified the biological intercept (BI) model to account for ontogenetic changes in the otolith-size−fish-size relationship and compared the results to the time-varying growth model, as well as the modified Fry model. We found the modified BI model estimated more accurately the size-at-age from hatching to 100 days after hatching. Before back-calculating size-at-age with existing models, we recommend a critical evaluation of the effects that age, growth, and ontogeny can have on the otolith-size−fish-size relations

Um grande desafio da atualidade é a preservação dos recursos hídricos, bem como o correto manejo dos mesmos, frente à expansão das cidades e às atividades humanas. A qualidade de um corpo hídrico é usualmente avaliada através da análise de parâmetros biológicos, físicos e químicos. O comportamento de tais parâmetros pode convenientemente ser simulado através de modelos matemáticos e computacionais, que surgem assim como uma ferramenta bastante útil, por sua capacidade de geração de cenários que possam embasar, por exemplo, tomadas de decisão. Nesta tese são discutidas técnicas de estimação da localização e intensidade de uma fonte de contaminante conservativo, hipoteticamente lançado na região predominantemente fluvial de um estuário. O lançamento aqui considerado se dá de forma pontual e contínua e a região enfocada compreendeu o estuário do Rio Macaé, localizado na costa norte do Rio de Janeiro. O trabalho compreende a solução de um problema direto, que consiste no transporte bidimensional (integrado na vertical) desse contaminante hipotético, bem como a aplicação de técnicas de problemas inversos. Para a solução do transporte do contaminante, aqui modelada pela versão 2D horizontal da equação de advecção-difusão, foram utilizados como métodos de discretização o Método de Elementos Finitos e o Método de Diferenças Finitas. Para o problema hidrodinâmico foram utilizados dados de uma solução já desenvolvida para estuário do Rio Macaé. Analisada a malha de acordo com o método de discretização, foram definidas a geometria do estuário e os parâmetros hidrodinâmicos e de transporte. Para a estimação dos parâmetros propostos foi utilizada a técnica de problemas inversos, com o uso dos métodos Luus-Jaakola, Algoritmo de Colisão de Partículas e Otimização por Colônia de Formigas para a estimação da localização e do método Seção Áurea para a estimação do parâmetro de intensidade da fonte. Para a definição de uma fonte, com o objetivo de propor um cenário experimental idealizado e de coleta de dados de amostragem, foi realizada a análise de sensibilidade quanto aos parâmetros a serem estimados. Como os dados de amostragem de concentração foram sintéticos, o problema inverso foi resolvido utilizando-os com e sem ruído, esse introduzido de forma artificial e aleatória. Sem o uso de ruído, os três métodos mostraram-se igualmente eficientes, com uma estimação precisa em 95% das execuções. Já com o uso de dados de amostragem com ruídos de 5%, o método Luus-Jaakola mostrou-se mais eficiente em esforço e custo computacional, embora todos tenham estimado precisamente a fonte em 80% das execuções. Considerando os resultados alcançados neste trabalho tem-se que é possível estimar uma fonte de constituintes, quanto à sua localização e intensidade, através da técnica de problemas inversos. Além disso, os métodos aplicados mostraram-se eficientes na estimação de tais parâmetros, com estimações precisas para a maioria de suas execuções. Sendo assim, o estudo do comportamento de contaminantes, e principalmente da identificação de fontes externas, torna-se uma importante ferramenta para a gestão dos recursos hídricos, possibilitando, inclusive, a identificação de possíveis responsáveis por passivos ambientais.

In West Africa (between Ivory Coast and Sénégal), estuarine environments vary from lagoons to high discharge rivers to inverse hypersaline estuaries. This results in a high diversity of estuarine fish species, with an important turnover and a core of ubiquitous species. The species richness of a given estuary depends on the combination of hydrological factors (marine or freshwater dominance) and biogeography (continental biogeographic regions). The catch rate is higher in lagoons and inverse estuaries than in normal estuaries, which can be explained by the predominance of small juveniles in the latter. Clupeids are the most abundant fishes all over the region, but different systems have different dominant species. Assessing the functioning of West-African estuaries provides useful comparisons to Asian estuarine systems.

A number of diadromous gobies, notably Sicydium spp. and Sicyopterus spp., support fisheries based on return migrations of postlarvae (fry) to rivers. Most species are tropical, although close relatives occur in Japan. The life history of this group has often been incorrectly described as catadromous (spawning in the sea or estuary), whereas anadromous (spawning in rivers) would be more accurate.

An endangered fish species in China, Reeves shad (Tenualosa reversii), is finding hope of restoration and conservation in aquaculture and induced breeding efforts spearheaded by the Yangtze River Fisheries Management Commission. The history and sensitive traits of the Reeves shad are described featuring the species' life history, population dynamics and management of the Reeves shad resources.

The black clam, Villorita cyprinoides, is the most important clam species landed in India. The State of Kerala has been, by far, the leading producer of the species. Nearly all the landings, about 25,000 tons (t)/year are harvested in Vembanad Lake, the largest estuary, 96 km (54 mi) long, on the west coast of India. Nearly 4,000 fishermen harvest the black clams year-round. They harvest most by hand while diving in waters from 2.1–2.7 m (7–9 ft) deep. Each collects 150–200 kg (3–5 bushels)/day. Upon returning from the harvesting beds, the fishermen and their families cook the clams and separate their meats from their shells using simple sieves. Fishermen’s wives sell the meats within their local villages and save some for their families to eat. The shells are sold through organized fishermen societies to various industries. A substantial quantity of sub-fossil black clam shells lies buried from 22–50 cm (9–20 in) beneath the lake sediments. They are dredged in a controlled manner and sold to the same industries. The stocks of black clams seem to be declining slowly in the southern part of the lake because the water has been getting fresher, but they are not declining in the northern half. A likely threat to the landings may be a lack of fishermen in the future.

Tissues from Cook Inlet beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, that were collected as part of the Alaska Marine Mammal Tissue Archival Project were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s), chlorinated pesticides, and heavy metals and other elements. Concentrations of total PCB’s (ΣPCB’s), total DDT (ΣDDT), chlordane compounds, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dieldrin, mirex, toxaphene, and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) measured in Cook Inlet beluga blubber were compared with those reported for belugas from two Arctic Alaska locations (Point Hope and Point Lay), Greenland, Arctic Canada, and the highly contaminated stock from the St. Lawrence estuary in eastern Canada. The Arctic and Cook Inlet belugas had much lower concentrations (ΣPCB’s and ΣDDT were an order of magnitude lower) than those found in animals from the St. Lawrence estuary. The Cook Inlet belugas had the lowest concentrations of all (ΣPCB’s aver-aged 1.49 ± 0.70 and 0.79 ± 0.56 mg/kg wet mass, and ΣDDT averaged 1.35 ± 0.73 and 0.59 ± 0.45 mg/kg in males and females, respectively). Concentrations in the blubber of the Cook Inlet males were significantly lower than those found in the males of the Arctic Alaska belugas (ΣPCB’s and ΣDDT were about half). The lower levels in the Cook Inlet animals might be due to differences in contaminant sources, food web differences, or different age distributions among the animals sampled. Cook Inlet males had higher mean and median concentrations than did females, a result attributable to the transfer of these compounds from mother to calf during pregnancy and during lactation. Liver concentrations of cadmium and mercury were lower in the Cook Inlet belugas (most cadmium values were <1 mg/kg and mercury values were 0.704–11.42 mg/kg wet mass), but copper levels were significantly higher in the Cook Inlet animals (3.97–123.8 mg/kg wet mass) than in Arctic Alaska animals and similar to those reported for belugas from Hudson Bay. Although total mercury levels were the lowest in the Cook Inlet population, methylmercury concentrations were similar among all three groups of the Alaska animals examined (0.34–2.11 mg/kg wet mass). O presente trabalho visa contribuir para a valorização e conservação dos cursos dágua e biodiversidade em área de Mata Atlântica no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, através da caracterização ambiental preliminar do sistema rio - estuário Córrego Andorinhas, localizado no Parque Estadual da Ilha Grande (RJ), utilizando indicadores abióticos e bióticos. As amostragens ocorreram de 20/10/11 a 22/10/11, pela manhã e tarde, em duas profundidades de três estações. O fitoplâncton e protozooplâncton foram coletados com frascos de polipropileno (500 ml), fixados com formaldeído 2% neutralizado com bórax e analisados em câmaras de sedimentação de Uthermöl. O zooplâncton foi coletado com rede de 68 μm de malha, fixado com formaldeído 4% neutralizado com bórax e analisado em subamostras. Variáveis abióticas foram analisadas in situ com sondas. Os nutrientes foram coletados com garrafa de Van Dorn e frascos de polipropileno, congeladas e levadas para análise no laboratório de Geoquímica da UFF. A estação AN-01 apresentou menores valores de temperatura da água (19 C), condutividade (2,3 μS/cm) e turbidez (1,1 UNT), mas com maiores valores de OD (9,6 mg/L). Maiores valores de turbidez (6,9 UNT) e pH (7,7) foram registrados na estação AN-02, enquanto a estação AN-03 apresentou maiores valores de temperatura da água (23,7 C) e condutividade (1951 μS/cm). O fitoplâncton apresentou valores máximos nas estações AN-02 manhã em 22/10/11 (4,28 x 103 ind/L) e AN-03 tarde em 20/10/11(3,4 x 103 ind/L). O zooplâncton apresentou valores máximos na estação AN-03 manhã (421,2 x 103 ind/L) e tarde (45,8 x 103 ind/L). Os valores máximos registrados para protozooplâncton foram registrados nas estações AN-02 manhã em 22/10/11 (35,1 x 103 ind/L) tarde em 21/10/11 (12,6 x 103 ind/L). A partir dos dados abióticos, caracterizou-se o sistema como oligo-mesotrófico, com características distintas em seus pontos de coleta: A dominância de sarcodinos, diatomáceas e calanóides, em riqueza e densidade, demonstram o caráter estuarino, pois protozoários são indicadores de ambientes lóticos continentais, calanóides de ambientes marinhos e diatomáceas representantes de ambos os ambientes. Este estudo preliminar demonstrou a integridade ambiental do estuário, fato que reflete em sua preservação e da Mata Atlântica em seu entorno.

The foraging ecology of bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus in the Northwest Florida Panhandle and estuaries in northern Georgia was determined using diet analysis and behavioral surveys. Stomach content analysis was completed on bottlenose dolphins(N = 25) that stranded in the Northwest Florida Panhandle from November 2006 to March 2009. The most abundant prey species were spot Leiostomus xanthurus (20.4%), squid (10.9%), pinfish Lagodon rhombiodes (10.3%), and Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus (8.5%). Dolphins that stranded during months with a red tide Karenia brevis bloom consumed more pinfish, and spot; whereas dolphins that stranded in non-bloom months consumed more squid, Atlantic croaker, and silver perch Bairdiella chrysoura. Differences in diet were also identified for dolphins that stranded inside bays/sound and dolphin that stranded outside of bays along the coast, and male and female dolphins. Surveys were conducted from south of the Savannah River to north of Ossabaw Sound in Georgia where foraging behaviors were classified. Multivariate Generalized Additive Models were used to test correlations of behaviors to dolphin group size, depth, salinity, temperature, creek width, and tide. Sightings with headstands (p = 0.009), hard stops (p = 0.019), chasing (p = 0.004), mudbank whacking (p < 0.001), herding/circling (p = 0.024), and strand feeding (p = 0.006) were correlated with shallow water or small creeks. Sightings with kerplunking (p = 0.031), mudbank whacking (p = 0.001), strand feeding (p = 0.003), and herding/circling (p = 0.026) were significantly correlated with low tide. The results of the Savannah, Georgia study were the first to characterize foraging behaviors in this area and demonstrate how bottlenose dolphins utilize the salt marsh estuary in terms of foraging. Studies like these are important to determine how dolphins forage efficiently and to provide background information on diet and foraging behavior for use in monitoring future impacts to dolphins in the Northwest Florida Panhandle and near Savannah, Georgia.
