Ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are produced, based on organic heterojunctions fabricated by a two-step vacuum-deposition process. Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) deposited at a high temperature (250 degrees C) acts as the first (p-type component) layer, and hexadecafluorophthalocyaninatocopper (F16CuPc) deposited at room temperature (25 degrees C) acts as the second (n-type component) layer. A heterojunction with an interpenetrating network is obtained as the active layer for the OFETs. These heterojunction devices display significant ambipolar charge transport with symmetric electron and hole mobilities of the order of 10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in air. Conductive channels are at the interface between the F16CuPc and CuPc domains in the interpenetrating networks. Electrons are transported in the F16CuPc regions, and holes in the CuPc regions. The molecular arrangement in the heterojunction is well ordered, resulting in a balance of the two carrier densities responsible for the ambipolar electrical characteristics. The thin-film morphology of the organic heterojunction with its interpenetrating network structure can be controlled well by the vacuum-deposition process.

A simple thermal process for the preparation of small Pt nanoparticles is presented, carried out by heating a H-2-PtCl6/3- thiophenemalonic acid aqueous solution. The following treatment of such colloidal Pt solution with Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) causes the assembly of Pt nanoparticles into aggregates. Most importantly, directly placing such aggregates on bare solid electrode surfaces can produce very stable films exhibiting excellent electrochemiluminescence behaviors.

Covalent surface functionalization of carbon nanotubes with polypeptides is promising for possible medical applications. This work presents a graft-from approach to perform the polypeptide modification of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWTNs). The raw MWNTs are first amine-functionalized. The amine-functionalized MWNTs are then used as the initiator to initiate the ring-opening polymerization of gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride (BLG- NCA), to results in the polypeptide-grafted MWNTs. FT-IR, XPS, and TGA data demonstrate that the functionalization is successful. The TEM images of the products show that the thickness of the polypeptide shell of the PBLG-MWNT is about 4.5-22 nm. Using the facile route developed here, carbon nanotubes functionalized with other types of polypeptides can be easily fabricated using the corresponding NCAs.

A diode with a reverse rectifying characteristics was fabricated based on the organic heterojunction of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and copper-hexadecafluoro-phthalocyanine (F16CuPc). At the heterojunction interface, HOMO of CuPc is bended upwards and LUMO of F16CuPc is bended downwards, since the charge carriers were accumulated at both side of the interface, electrons in F16CuPc and holes in CuPc. The thickness of holes accumulated at the CuPc layer is about 10 nm. which was determined by fabricating organic field-effect transistors with active layers in series of thickness. By utilizing the heterojunction-effect, the threshold voltage in organic transistors can be modified.

A series of novel polyimide/polydiphenylsiloxane) (PI/PDDS) composite films with different contents of DDS were prepared using sol-gel method. The noncrosslinked PI-DDS and crosslinked PIS-DDS were synthesized through cohydrolysis and condensation between DDS and polyamic acid (PAA) or aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES)-terminated polyamic acid (PAAS). All the composite films have high thermal stability near pure PI. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) study shows that the polysiloxane from hydrolyzed DDS well dispersed in polyimide matrix, without macroscopic separation for the composite films with low content of DDS, while large domain of polysiloxane was formed in films with high DDS content. The microstructure of composite films is in accordance with the transparency of corresponding films. X-ray study shows the PDDS is amorphous in PI matrix. The introduction of DDS into PI can improve the elongation at break and at the same time, the composite films still remained with higher modulus and tensile strength. The density and water absorption of the composite films decreased with the increasing DDS content. The composite films with DDS content below 10 wt % exhibit good solvent resistance.

The morphologies and crystalline structures of melt-crystallized ultrathin isotactic poly(1-butene) films have been studied with transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. It is demonstrated that a bypass of form II crystallization can be achieved with an increase in its crystallization temperature. Electron microscopy observations show that melt-grown isotactic poly(1-butene) single crystals have a well-shaped hexagonal form, whereas form I crystals converted from form II display the morphologies of their tetragonal precursors. Electron diffraction results indicate that, instead of the twinned hexagonal pattern of the converted form I crystal, the directly formed form I single crystals exhibit an untwinned hexagonal pattern.

Isotactic polypropylene in its a modification (alpha iPP) crystallises epitaxially on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and several hemiacids or salts of substituted benzoic acids via a novel contact plane, namely (110): so far, the only known contact plane involved in alpha iPP homo- and hetero-epitaxies was (010). In spite of its complicated architecture (alternation of antichiral helices with different azimuthal settings), the (110)(alpha iPP) contact plane displays well defined, if not prominent, rows of methyl side chains parallel to the crystallographic (112) direction (at 57 degrees to the c-axis) and approximate to 5.5 Angstrom apart. The matching contact planes of the substrates display linear gratings made of rows of e.g. chlorine atoms or PTFE chains with similar approximate to 5.5 Angstrom inter-row or interchain distances. Various morphologies are observed in iPP thin films crystallised at different cooling rates in the presence of PTFE; they can be analysed in terms of a succession and interplay of successive epitaxies: initial alpha iPP/PTFE heteroepitaxy, followed by alpha iPP/alpha iPP and gamma iPP/alpha iPP homoepitaxies. In order to generate catalytic antibodies with glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, we prepared GSH-S-DNP butyl ester and GSH-S-DNP benzyl ester as the haptens. Two ScFvs that bound specifically to the haptens were selected from the human phage-displayed antibody library. The two ScFv genes were highly homologous, consisting of 786 bps and belonging to the same VH family-DP25. In the premise of maintaining the amino acid sequence, mutated plasmids were constructed by use of the mutated primers in PCR, and they were over-expressed in E. coli. After the active site serine was converted into selenocysteine with the chemical modifying method, we obtained two human catalytic antibodies with GPx activity of 72.2U/mu mol and 28.8U/mu mol, respectively. With the aid of computer mimicking, it can be assumed that the antibodies can form dimers and the mutated selenocysteine residue is located in the binding site. Furthermore, the same Ping-Pong mechanism as the natural GPx was observed when the kinetic behavior of the antibody with the higher activity was studied. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science BY. A liquid crystalline (LC) copolyether has been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,11-dibromoundecane with a 50/50 (both in %) equal composition of the 7- and 11-methylene monomers [coTPP-7/11(5/5)]. A mono-domain with a homeotropic alignment can be induced by a thin film surface in the LC phase. When an electrostatic field is applied to the surface-induced mono-domains parallel to the thin film surface normal, the molecular alignment undergoes a change from the homeotropic to uniaxial homogeneous arrangement. However, when the field is applied to a direction perpendicular to the thin film surface normal. the molecular alignment is about 10 degrees -tilt with respect to the homeotropic alignment toward the a*-axis. This is because the permanent dipole moment of the copolyether is not right vertical to the molecular direction. The calculation of molecular dipoles indicates that the permanent dipole moment of this copolyether is about 70 degrees away from the molecular axis, which leads to a negative dielectric anisotropy. It is speculated that the 10 degrees- rather than 20 degrees -tilt is due to a balance between the alignment induced by the electrostatic field and the surface. In the electrostatic field, molecules are subjected to a torque tau, which is determined by the permanent dipole moment P and the electrostatic field E: tau = P x E. The molecular realignment in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the thin film surface normal is determined by satisfying the condition of tau = P x E = 0. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. A novel macrocyclic compound-water soluble functional calixresorcin[4]arenes-tetra para sulfo-phenylmethyl-calixresorcin[4]are was synthesized for the first time. The photophysical properties of terbium and europium ions encapsulated in the macrocyclic ligand were studied in detail. The triplet state energy of the calixresorcin[4]arene was determined to be 24400 cm(-1) by the low temperature phosphorescence spectrum and it was found that it can sensitize both terbium ion and europium ion. The possible energy transfer process between the functional calixresorcin[4]arene and the encapsulated Tb3+ and Eu3+ was discussed. The luminescence quantum efficiency of Tb3+- calixresorcin[4]arene was calculated.

In natural and synthetic materials having non-racemic chiral centers, chirality and structural ordering each play a distinct role in the formation of ordered states. Configurational chirality can be extended to morphological chirality when the phase, structures possess low liquid crystalline order. In the crystalline states the crystallization process suppresses the chiral helical morphology due to strong ordering interactions, In this Letter, we report the first observation of helical single lamellar crystals of synthetic non-racemic chiral polymers. Experimental evidence shows that the molecular chains twist along both the long and short axes of the helical lamellar crystals, which is the first time a double-twist molecular orientation in a helical crystal has been observed.

Phase structures and transformation mechanisms of nonracemic chiral biological and synthetic polymers are fundamentally important topics in understanding their macroscopic responses in different environments. It has been known for many years that helical structures and morphologies can exist in low-ordered chiral liquid crystalline (LC) phases. However, when the chiral liquid crystals form highly ordered smectic liquid crystal phases, the helical morphology is suppressed due to the crystallization process. A double-twisted morphology has been observed in many liquid crystalline biopolymers such as dinoflaggellate chromosomes (in Prorocentrum micans) in an in vivo arrangement. Helical crystals grown from solution have been reported in the case of Bombyx mori silk fibroin crystals having the beta modification. This study describes a synthetic nonracemic chiral main-chain LC polyester that is able to thermotropically form helical single lamellar crystals. Flat single lamellar crystals can also be observed under the same crystallization condition. Moreover, flat and helical lamellae can coexist in one single lamellar crystal, within which one form can smoothly transform to the other. Both of these crystals possess the same structure, although translational symmetry is broken in the helical crystals. The polymer chain folding direction in both flat and helical lamellar crystals is determined to be identical, and it is always along the long axis of the lamellae. This finding provides an opportunity to study the chirality effect on phase structure, morphology, and transformation in condensed states of chiral materials. [S0163-1829(99)01042-5].

A series of liquid crystalline copolyethers have been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,12-dibromododecene [coTPPs(7/12)], which represents copolyethers containing both odd and even numbers of methylene units. The molar ratio of odd to even methylene units in this series ranges from 1/9 to 9/1. The coTPPs(7/12) exhibit multiple phase transitions during cooling and heating in differential scanning calorimetry experiments. For all these thermal transitions, a small undercooling and superheating dependence is observed upon cooling and heating at different rates. Three types of phase behaviors can be classified in coTPPs(7/12) on the basis of the structural analyses by wide-angle X-ray diffraction on powder and fiber samples and by electron diffraction experiments in transmission electron microscopy. At room temperature, highly ordered smectic and smectic crystal (SC) phases are identified in coTPPs(7/12: 1/9 and 2/8), which is similar to the homopolymer TPP(m = 12). The coTPPs(7/12: 3/7, 4/6, and 5/5) possess a hexagonal columnar (Phi(H)) phase in which the molecular and columnar axes are parallel to the fiber direction and perpendicular to the hexagonal lateral packing. The coTPPs(7/12: 6/4, 7/3, and 8/2) possess a tilted hexagonal columnar (Phi(TH)) phase with a single tilt angle which increases with the increasing composition of the seven-numbered methylene units. However, in coTPP(7/12: 9/1), a Phi(TH) phase with multiple tilt angles is found. Upon heating, phase structures in most coTPPs(7/12) involving the columnar phases enter directly into the nematic (N) phase, while the coTPP(7/12: 1/9) exhibits a highly ordered smectic F (S-F) phase before it reaches the N phase. One exception is found in coTPP(7/12: 2/8), wherein the transformation from the S-F to Phi(H) occurs prior to the N phase. Combining the copolymer phase behaviors observed with the corresponding homopolymers TPP(n = 7) and TPP(m = 12), a phase diagram describing transition temperatures with respect to the composition can be constructed.

A series of liquid crystalline copolyethers has been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane and different alpha,omega-dibromoalkanes [coTPP(n/m)]. In this report, coTPPs having n = 5, 7, 9, 11 and m = 12 are studied, which represent copolyethers having both varying odd number and a fixed even number of methylene units. The compositions were fixed at an equal molar ratio (50/50). These coTPPs(nlm) show multiple phase transitions during cooling and heating in differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The undercooling dependence of these transitions is found to be small, indicating that these transitions are close to equilibrium, Although the coTPPs possess a high-temperature nematic (N) phase, the periodicity order along the chain direction is increasingly disturbed when the length of the odd-numbered methylene units decreases from n 11 to 5. in the coTPPs(5/12, 7/12, and 9/12), wide-angle X-ray diffraction experiments at different temperatures show that, shortly after the N phase formation during cooling, the lateral molecular packing improves toward a hexagonal lattice, as evidenced by a gradual narrowing of the scattering halo. This process represents the possible existence of an exotic N phase, which serves as a precursor to the columnar (Phi(H)) phase. A further decrease in temperature leads to a (PH phase having a long-range ordered, two-dimensional hexagonal lattice. In coTPP(11/12), the phase structures are categorized as highly ordered and tilted, smectic and smectic crystal phases, similar to homoTPPs, such as the smectic F (S-F) and smectic crystal G (SCG) phases. An interesting observation is found for coTPP(9/12), wherein a structural change from the high-temperature Phi(H) phase to the low-temperature S-F phase occurs. It can be proven that, upon heating, the well-defined layer structure disappears and the lateral packing remains hexagonal. The overall structural differences in this series of coTPPs between those of the columnar and highly ordered smectic phases are related to the disorders introduced into the layer structure by the dissimilarity of the methylene unit lengths in the comonomers.
