Radiolarian census and abundance data were collected from three deep-sea cores drilled by the Ocean Drilling Program Sites 884, 887 and 1151 to investigate patterns of ecologic changes in space and time during the last 16 million years for the mid-latitude to subarctic North Pacific. High concentrations of radiolarians occurred between 9.0 and 2.7 Ma. Radiolarian species richness was highest in the early middle Miocene at each site and gradually decreased up to about 7 Ma, coinciding with a well-established global cooling trend. A degree of overlap index calculated for radiolarian assemblages revealed 11 faunal change events, of which 8 corresponded to global cooling events and expansions of polar ice sheets. Three of the faunal change events were observed within the peak of radiolarian accumulation rate and were ascribed to changes in primary productivity in the North Pacific rather than global climatic changes. Our assemblage analyses revealed that north-south differentiation in radiolarian assemblages in the northwestern Pacific has existed since 16 Ma and became more distinct via major steps at 6.8 Ma and 2.7 Ma, coinciding with major glaciation events, and that east-west faunal contrasts in the subarctic region became obvious beginning at 11.7 Ma and changed to a different mode around 6.8 Ma. The observed east-west faunal differences possibly reflect east to west climate differences that were characterized by cooler temperatures in the east than the west during the late Miocene (11.7-6.8 Ma) and then by the opposite temperature trend (6.8 Ma-Recent). A severe glaciation at 2.7 Ma played a large role, particularly in temporal changes in radiolarian accumulation rate and assemblage composition.

Results of determinations of 90Sr and tritium polluting surface water in different parts of the North Pacific are presented. The T/90Sr ratio lies within 90-600 over the referred water area and attains 2000 near the Columbia River mouth. Tritium concentration in sea water has been noted to be affected by river runoff and terrigenous sediments.

Structure of mesoplankton and distribution of dissolved ammonia in the vicinity of an isolated seamount of the Louisville Ridge in the subantarctic zone of the Pacific Ocean was studied using data obtained in January 1985 in an area 20 x 30 nm. There were areas with both high (20-25 to 139 g/m**2 in the 0-200 m layer) and low biomass values (<10 g/m**2) of mesoplankton. In the areas with high biomass, a single species Calanus tonsus was strongly dominant (>80% of biomass); its population was relatively mature in seasonal terms, with relatively high percentage of individuals containing fat inclusions. Stations with high mesoplankton biomass also had relatively high concentrations of dissolved ammonia. Presence of plankton-rich areas corre¬lated with presence of a quasi-steady-state topographic eddy. Lifetimes of these nonuniformities in the structure of mesoplankton are estimated as 10-30 days.

Samples collected from the coarse basal portions of mid-Cretaceous volcaniclastic turbidites from the Mariana and Pigafetta basins are remarkably similar in terms of the petrographic and chemical features of their igneous clasts and bulk rock composition. Clasts of magmatic origin are dominated by glassy vesicular shards, variably phyric, holocrystalline basalts, and crystal fragments (olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, amphibole, and biotite). The composition of the pyroxenes and amphiboles are typical of those found in differentiated hydrous alkali basalts. The bulk chemical composition of the volcaniclastites (based on stable incompatible elements and their ratios in highly vitric samples) is characteristic of alkali basalts found in within-plate oceanic eruptive environments. Miocene volcaniclastites from Site 802 are broadly similar to the Cretaceous samples in terms of clast type and bulk composition, and have also been derived from an oceanic alkali basalt source. The chemistry of the Miocene volcaniclastites differ, however, in having distinctive Zr/Y and Zr/Nb ratios and a more restricted chemical composition. The magmatic products of nearly emergent seamounts within the western Pacific basins appears to have been dominated by alkali basalt volcanism during the mid-Cretaceous and also the Miocene. The highly vitric nature of the Cretaceous and Miocene volcaniclastites, together with the morphology and vesicularity of their shards, suggests that they are the reworked (via mass flow) products of hyaloclastite accumulations produced in a shallow-water eruptive environment, such as that adjacent to nearly emergent seamounts or ocean islands. The association of ooids, reefal debris, and, in rare cases, woody material with the volcaniclastites supports their shallow-water derivation.

To check on the assumption that metabolic products of planktonic organisms can affect the coefficient of dynamic viscosity of seawater, viscosity was measured in water samples taken from depths of 0 to 1843 m, west of the Hawaiian Islands. Obtained results showed that plankton has no effect on viscosity of water in regions of low productivity and that viscosity can be determined with high degree of accuracy from the appropriate tables.

After death of benthic and planktic foraminifera their tests intensive dissolve in sediments of the upper sublittoral zone (depth 30-60 m) in the highest productivity area of surface water in the northern Peruvian region. Dissolution of fine pelitic ooze is more intensive than of sandy sediments. Rate of dissolution is lower in the lower sublittoral zone (60-200 m) than in the upper part of the zone. Within the upper bathyal zone (300-500 m) dissolution decreases and results to accumulation of carbonate test in this zone. Benthic tests are more abundant than planktic ones. Very poor species composition and a peculiar set of species are characteristic of foraminiferal assemblages found in the sublittoral and upper bathyal zones along the Peruvian coast.

Bioaccumulation of trace metals in carbonate shells of mussels and clams was investigated at seven hydrothermal vent fields of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Menez Gwen, Snake Pit, Rainbow, and Broken Spur) and the Eastern Pacific (9°N and 21°N at the East Pacific Rise and the southern trough of Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California). Mineralogical analysis showed that carbonate skeletons of mytilid mussel Bathymodiolus sp. and vesicomyid clam Calyptogena m. are composed mainly of calcite and aragonite, respectively. The first data were obtained for contents of a variety of chemical elements in bivalve carbonate shells from various hydrothermal vent sites. Analyses of chemical compositions (including Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Ag, Ni, Cr, Co, As, Se, Sb, and Hg) of 35 shell samples and 14 water samples from mollusk biotopes revealed influences of environmental conditions and some biological parameters on bioaccumulation of metals. Bivalve shells from hydrothermal fields with black smokers are enriched in Fe and Mn by factor of 20-30 relative to the same species from the Menez Gwen low-temperature vent site. It was shown that essential elements (Fe, Mn, Ni, and Cu) more actively accumulated during early ontogeny of the shells. High enrichment factors of most metals (n x 100 - n x 10000) indicate efficient accumulation function of bivalve carbonate shells. Passive metal accumulation owing to adsorption on shell surfaces was estimated to be no higher than 50% of total amount and varied from 14% for Fe to 46% for Mn.

A 328 cm-long piston core (KODOS 02-01-02) collected from the northeast equatorial Pacific at 16°12'N, 125°59'W was investigated for eolian mass fluxes and grain sizes to test these proxies as a tool for the paleo-position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The eolian mass fluxes of the lower interval below 250 cm (15.5-7.6 Ma) are very uniform at 5 +/- 1 mg/cm**2/kyr, while those of the upper interval above 250 cm (from 7.6 Ma) are over 2 times higher than the lower interval at 12 +/- 1 mg/cm**2/kyr. The median grain size of the eolian dusts in the lower interval increases from 8.4 Phi to 8.0 Phi downward, while that of the upper interval varies in a narrow range from 8.8 Phi to 8.6 Phi. The determined values compare well in magnitude to those of central Pacific sediments for the upper interval and equatorial and southeast Pacific sediments for the lower interval. This result suggests a possibility that the study site had been under the influence of southeast trade winds at its earlier depositional period due to the northerly position of the ITCZ, and subsequently of the northeast trade winds for a later period when the upper sediments were deposited. This interpretation is consistent with a mineralogical and geochemical study published elsewhere that assigned the provenance of the study core dust to Central/South America for the lower interval and to Asia for the upper interval. This study suggests that the distinct differences in eolian mass flux and grain size observed across the ITCZ can be used to trace the paleo-latitude of the ITCZ.
