The book is devoted to study of diagenetic changes of organic matter and mineral part of sediments and interstitial waters of the Pacific Ocean due to physical-chemical and microbiological processes. Microbiological studies deal with different groups of bacteria. Regularities of quantitative distribution and the role of microorganisms in geochemical processes are under consideration. Geochemical studies highlight redox processes of the early stages of sediment diagenesis, alterations of interstitial waters, regularities of variations in chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules.

Phosphorite nodules collected during Cruise 8 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev off the Peruvian coast are represented by three lithologic types: friable, compacted, and solid. As the nodules are progressively compacted, contents of phosphate components increase and of non-phosphate components decrease. Isotope composition of uranium in the friable nodules is the same as in ocean water, and diatoms contained in the nodules are represented by recent species indicating Late Quaternary age of the nodules.

Ore crusts from the Mid-Pacific Seamounts were studied by scanning electron microscopy and by atomic-absorption and chemical analysis. Characteristic ultramicroscopic structures of ore material of these crusts are globular, fibrous, conchoidal and cellular. Non-ore components are represented by fragments of bedrocks, zeolites, biogenic carbonates, and apatite. Contents of ore elements are: Fe 5.53-15.82%; Mn 14.92-23.45%; Co 0.32-0.82%; Ni 0.22-0.70%; Cu 0.02-0.12%, Mn/Fe ratio varies from 1.02 to 3.39. In general elevated contents of Co (>0.55%) in Fe-Mn crusts correspond to elevated (>1) Mn/Fe ratios.

Petrography of magmatic rocks collected from a submarine seamount on the Mid-Pacific Rise is briefly characterized. Variety of petrographic types of effusive rocks and xenoliths contained in them indicates complexity of geologic development and distinctive structure of the oceanic crust in the area under study.

Calcareous and siliceous biogenic components have been studied in deep-water iron-manganese nodules from the northern and southern Pacific Ocean. Calcareous material consists of foraminifera remains, calcareous algae, and coccolithophorids, whereas siliceous material consists of remains of radiolarians and diatoms, as well as sponge spicules. Structures similar in morphology to coccal and filiform bacteria have been found in both outer and inner sections of the nodules indicating that microorganisms may be directly or indirectly involved in their development.

The monograph presents results of comprehensive geological and geophysical studies carried out in 1973 and 1976 during Cruises 54 and 58 of R/V "Vityaz" in the Eastern Indian Ocean. On the base of obtained data a description of topography, magnetic and gravity fields, structure of the sedimentary series and deep crustal structure of the East Indian Ridge, Central, West Australian and Cocos Basins, the Sunda Trench has been done. Materials on petrography, petrochemistry and geochemistry of igneous rocks in the region have been summarized. New geological and geophysical information has been compared with with DSDP materials. Tectonics and geological history of the Eastern Indian Ocean are under consideration.

Group composition of organic matter in recent ocean sediments with high Corg content has been studied in detail. It has been shown that organic matter in sediments with Corg content greater than 4% is present in the very earliest stages of transformation. Group composition of amino acids is practically similar to that of their main producer, namely phytoplankton. Organic matter of sediments with Corg content below 4% is, from this standpoint, more transformed and is close to organic matter in usual type sediments with similar Corg content.

Both the olivine-hearing tholeiite basalts of the island and the brown soils which have developed on the basalts contain 2-20% of a swelling clay mineral. It emerges from chemical, optical, X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analytical studies that this clay mineral is a Mg-rich, Fe2+ and AI-bearing tri-octahedral smectite, e. g. Mg-saponite. Due to petrographic and crystal chemical properties the saponite should have been formed by hydrothermal alteration of the primary Mg-Fe-minerals olivine and clinopyroxene. The soils consist of plagioclase, saponite and goethite which has been formed by chemical weathering within the soils. In the uppermost layer some of the soils contain humic substances and phosphatic material, the latter may be related to the recent production of guano.

The book deals with results of complex geological and geophysical studies in the Doldrums and Arkhangelsky Fracture Zones of the Central Atlantic. Description of the main features of bottom relief, sediments and crustal structure, geomagnetic field, composition of igneous and sedimentary rocks are given in the book. The authors made conclusions on tectonic delamination of the oceanic crust and existence of specific rock complexes forming non-spreading blocks

The monograph summarizes materials on geology and deep structure of the Central Atlantic fracture zones. These materials have been obtained during eight expeditions of R/V ''Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov''. The studies have been based on the integrated geological approach. As a result, many new tectonic, magmatic, metallogenic and historical-geological features of these phenomenal structures of the deep ocean have been revealed.
