Seismic multichannel reflection profiles from the Gulf of Cadiz, IODP Expedition 339

Sediments cored along the southwestern Iberian margin during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 339 provide constraints on Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) circulation patterns from the Pliocene epoch to the present day. After the Strait of Gibraltar opened (5.33 million years ago), a limited volume of MOW entered the Atlantic. Depositional hiatuses indicate erosion by bottom currents related to higher volumes of MOW circulating into the North Atlantic, beginning in the late Pliocene. The hiatuses coincide with regional tectonic events and changes in global thermohaline circulation (THC). This suggests that MOW influenced Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), THC, and climatic shifts by contributing a component of warm, saline water to northern latitudes while in turn being influenced by plate tectonics.

During the Atlantic expedition potential gradient, small ion density and space charge density have been recorded. Laborious efforts have been taken for receiving an exact estimation of the reduction factor for the field measurements. The mean value of the potential gradient on the free Atlantic Ocean was 105 V/m. The mean daily course is in very good agreement with the results of the Carnegie Institution. Even records taken on individual days near the quator show this course. For the first time it has been attempted to correlate the potential gradient at sea and the voltage between ionosphere and earth measured over land. A narrow relation has been found in 10 cases of balloon ascents with radiosondes. A further remarkable result is, that the short periodical fluctuations of the air electric field at sea with periods of 2 to 20 minutes have amplitudes of the magnitude of the mean field strength and exist all over the oceans. Recordings of the space charge density show, that positively charged air parcels drift in the first hectometer of the air near the sea surface and produce the fluctuation of the potential gradient. A period analysis did not indicate a recognizable relation to the wind velocity up to now, although an effect of air turbulence must be involved. The concentration of small ions also has been measured occasionally. With this and mean values of the potential gradient the air earth curent density has been computed. With n+ = 310 cm**-3, n- = 220 cm**-3 the air conductivity would be Lambda = 1,14 * 10**-14 Ohm**-1 m**-1. These values are smaller than values of other authors by a factor of 2 or 3. Therefore the computed air earth current density is also smaller. The discrepancy could not be explained yet.

Maternidades en cuestión : Modelos idílicos y prácticas de las madres en Argentina 1892-1936

Este artículo presenta un recorrido por los diversos estudios historiográficos de las mujeres y género que han abordado la problemática de la maternidad en Argentina. Al mismo tiempo, analiza las distintas perspectivas desde donde fue abordada, rescatando las tensiones entre los modelos idílicos de madre, que desde el Estado se intentaron instaurar, y las prácticas de las mujeres que fueron más allá de las normas y, a su vez, pusieron en cuestión esos modelos. Por último, se realiza un balance acerca de las problemáticas comunes intentando aportar algunas cuestiones para su abordaje

Nuevas iluminaciones en las sombras biográficas de Alejandro Sawa - Max Estrella (1892- 1896)

Las nuevas noticias referidas a la biografía de Alejandro Sawa propor¬cionan datos de gran interés para desentrañar las andanzas de la bohemia Hispanoamérica en el París de finales del siglo XIX, a la sombra de la Casa Editorial Garnier y de las tertulias presididas por P. Verlaine, así como para descifrar las claves históricas diseminadas por Valle-Inclán en Luces de bohemia, homenaje póstumo a la memoria del introductor de las novedades literarias francesas en la cultura española de fin de siglo, Alejandro Sawa - Max Estrella.

Apuntes para una biografía de Bela Székely (1892-1955)

A pesar de su vasta actividad periodística y académica, son escasos los datos que el psicoanalista, periodista y psicólogo Bela Székely dejó acerca de su vida personal y profesional. La reconstrucción de su biografía parece un rompecabezas con piezas procedentes de diferentes fuentes, que más de una vez resultan contradictorias. En este trabajo se reúne información disponible en castellano, alemán y húngaro, con el fin de permitir que futuras investigaciones sobre la vida y la obra de esta figura multifacética se asienten sobre una base histórica fiable. Más allá de los datos biográficos sobre Bela Székely, el trabajo aborda en detalle los primeros años de su estadía en la Argentina (1938-1942), período en el cual su destino profesional se entrelazó con desarrollos cruciales en el campo 'psi' argentino

At surface behaviour of adult male southern elephant seals from King George Island from expedition JUB2000

Adult male southern elephant seals instrumented in 2000 on King George Island (n = 13), travelled both to the north (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231580, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231585) and to the east (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231571, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231579, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261708, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261709, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261710, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261711) of the Antarctic Peninsula. Five males (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231571, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231579, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231580, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261710, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.231585) remained within 500 km of the island and focusing movements in the Bransfield Strait and around the Antarctic Peninsula. Sea-surface temperatures encountered by these animals showed little variation and they seemed to move about irrespective of sea ice cover, but frequented areas of shallow bathymetry. Three males (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261708, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261709, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.261711) moved as far as 75°S to the east of the peninsula, into the Weddell Sea, with maximum distances of more than 1500 km from King George Island. They travelled into the Weddell Sea along the western continental shelf break until they reached the region of the Filchner Trough outflow. Here the bathymetry consists of canyons and ridges which support the intensive mixing between the warm saline waters of the Weddell Gyre and the very cold outflow waters with Ice Shelf water ingredients at the Antarctic Slope Front. A computer animation was developed to visualize the animal movements in relation to the extent and concentration of sea ice (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.509404). The need for re-instrumentation of adult males from King George Island is highlighted to investigate whether males continue to travel to similar areas and to obtain higher resolution data.
