An electrochemically stable monolayer of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) was obtained for the first time. It was based on the electrostatic attachment of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film, which was covalently bound onto glassy carbon electrode by the electrochemical reduction of diazobenzene sulfonic acid. The surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) underwent reversible surface process, and reacted with the coreactant, tripropylamine, to produce electrochemiluminescence. In view of the stability of the electrode, the results strongly suggested that light was emitted from the surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), not from the detached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode was used to the determination of tripropylamine. It showed good linearity in the concentration range from 5 muM to 1 muM with a detection limit of 1 muM (S/N = 4). The good stability of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode also showed that the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film prepared can be served as an excellent support to construct multilayers. The variation of lattice spacings of poly(iminosebacoyl iminodecamethylene) (nylon-10,10) with temperature was studied by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) during both heating and cooling processes, which demonstrates a gradual and continuous transition with temperature. However, the crystal melts before the two peaks merge completely. Both WAXD and differential scanning calorimetry show that crystallization from molten sample results directly in the triclinic form. Additionally, this transition is thermodynamically reversible. Comparison of this transition with that of nylon-6,6, suggests that no hydrogen-bonded network is formed during or after the transition. We prefer to attribute this transition to asymmetrical thermal expansion in the nylon-10,10 crystals rather than to a true first-order phase transition. (C) 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.

The effects of heteropoly acids and Triton X-100 on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) are investigated. Triton X-100 prevents the oxidation of oxalate and results in an increase of the ECL signal. H5SiW11VO40 prevents the direct oxidation of oxalate and makes the electrochemical behavior of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) less reversible, which leads to a decrease of the ECL signal. In contrast, H3PMo12O40 has negligible effect on ECL intensity. Some possible reasons for the effects on the ECL of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) are discussed based on the adsorption of SiW11VO405- on electrode surface and the ion association between SiW11VO405- and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The signal of ECL decreases linearly with the concentration of heteropoly acid in the range from 2x10-6 to 1x10(-4) mol l(-1). The results indicate that ECL of RU(bpy)(3)(2+) is a potential sensitive and selective detection method for heteropoly acids and hence for the elements comprised in them.

A novel functionalized inorganic-organic hybrid material with cation exchange property was prepared by sol-gel method. The H2O2 biosensor was fabricated by simply dipping the horseradish peroxidase-containing functionalized membrane modified electrode into Meldola's blue (MDB) solution. MDB was adsorbed and firmly immobilized within the membrane. The electrochemical behavior of MDB incorporated in the membrane was more reversible compared with that of the solution species and suitable as mediator for the horseradish peroxidase. The response time was less than 25 s. Linear range is up to 0.6 mM (COH. coeff. 0.9998) with detection Limit of 9 x 10(-7) M. High sensitivity of 75 nA mu M cm(-2) was obtained due to high MDB-loading. The biosensor exhibited a good stability. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This work probes the role of hydrogen bonds (such as O-H ... O and N-H ... O) in some inorganic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, such as HIO3, NH4H2PO4 (ADP), K[B5O6(OH)(4)] . 2H(2)O (KB5) and K2La(NO3)(5) . 2H(2)O (KLN), from the chemical bond standpoint. Second order NLO behaviors of these four typical inorganic crystals have been quantitatively studied, results show hydrogen bonds play a very important role in NLO contributions to the total nonlinearity. Conclusions derived here concerning the effect of hydrogen bonds on optical nonlinearities of inorganic crystals have important implications with regard to the utilization of hydrogen bonds in the structural design of inorganic NLO crystals. A composite film containing heteropolyanion was fabricated on gold by attaching the Keggin-type heteropolyanion, PMo12O403- on a 4-aminothiophenol SAM via Au-S bonding. Reflection FTIR, cyclic voltammetry and XPS were used for the characterization of the composite film. Reflection FTIR studies indicate that there is some Coulombic interaction between PMo12O403- and the surface amino group in the composite film, which greatly improves the film stability and prevents effectively the destructive intermolecular aggregation. The composite him shows three reversible redox couples within the pH range pH less than or equal to 7.0, attributed to three two-electron and two-proton electrochemical reduction-oxidation processes of PMo12O403-. Compared with PMo12O403- in the solution, the PMo12O403- of the composite film electrode can exist in a larger pH range, and shows smaller peak-to-peak separation, and more reversible reaction kinetics. Moreover, the composite him obtained shows a good catalytic activity for the reduction of BrO3-. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A novel organic-inorganic composite film was formed by attaching Keegin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404- (devoted briefly as SiW12), on a glassy carbon electrode derivatized by 4-aminophenyl group. The composite film has an ionic bonding character between SiW12 and the surface amino group, which greatly improves the Blm stability and exhibits a more reversible electrochemical behavior. The modified electrode offers an excellent and stable electrocatalytic response for the reduction of nitrite. Possible mechanism was provided for the reaction of nitrite with SiW12O404-/aminophenyl composite film.

At the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of a thiol-functionalized viologen modified gold electrode, cytochrome c (cyt c) exhibits a quasi-reversible electrochemical reaction. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant of cyt c in 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer solution(pH 6.96) is 0.164 cm.s(-1) at 500 mV/s. The adsorbed cyt c on the viologen SAM forms a closely packed monolayer, whose average electron transfer rate is 4.85 s(-1) in the scan range of 50 to 500 mV/s. These results suggest that the SAM of viologen-thiol is a relatively stable, ordered and well-behaved monolayer from an electrochemical standpoint and it promotes the electron transfer process of biomolecules on electrode surface well.

The electrochemical and adsorption behaviors of riboflavin (RF) at gold electrodes has ken studied by using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). Useful information is obtained not only about electrochemical behavior but also about mass changes on the electrode surface. The electrochemical properties and frequency shifts were investigated in RF solutions at different pH values, concentrations and scan rates. Reversible voltammograms were observed for pH less than or equal to 9.71. There was no electrochemical reaction for pH > 9.71. The maximum current response was obtained at about pH 8. The current response was proportional to the square root of scan rates when the concentration of RF was lower than 1.0 x 10(-4) mol L-1 (pH 6.92). On the contrary, at concentrations higher than 1.0 x 10(-4) mol L-1 (pH 6.92), it was proportional to the scan rates.

Electrochemical behavior of the transfer of H+ across polypyrrole membrane (PPM) was studied. The transfer process was quasi-reversible and mainly diffusion-controlled. PPM electropolymerized in water solution has better reversibility than that in CH3CN solution for the transfer of H+. The transfer process of H+ across the two kinds of PPM indicated that the PPM electrochemically polymerized was of asymmetry.

The synergistic extraction of Sc(III) from H2SO4 solution with bis(2, 4, 4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid(HBTMPTP, HL) and branched chain alkyl phosphine oxide mixture (Cyanex 925, B) in n-hexane has been investigated, The results indicated that synergistic effect was showed in low acidity (c(H2SO4) < 0.25 mol/L). The composition of the extracted complex of Sc(III) has been determined to be Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2) by the method of slope analysis, The mechanism of the synergistic extraction of Sc(III) may be : Sc3+ + 2(HL)(2(O)) + 3B((O)) + 1/2SO(4)(2-)reversible arrow(K12)Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 2H(+) ScL(HL2)(2(O)) + 3B((O)) + H+ + 1/2SO(4)(2-)reversible arrow(beta')Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 1/2(HL)(2(O)) Sc(SO4)(1.5)B-2(O) + B-(O) + 2(HL)(2(O))reversible arrow(beta')Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 2H(+) + SO42- Their equilibrium constants have been calculated to be lgK(13)=6.77+/-0.12, lg beta'=7.71, lg beta '' = 0.10, respectively, The IR spectra and FAB-MS of the saturated synergistic extraction complex of Sc(III) have been discussed as well.

The electrochemical behavior of Nd3+ and Ho3+ ions on molybdenum electrode in the LiCl-KCl eutectic melts has been studied by cyclic voltammetry and open-circuit potentiometry. The results show that the reduction process of Nd3+ and Ho3+ ions on molybdenum electrode is one-step three electron reversible reaction. The diffusion coefficients of Nd3+ and Ho3+ ions are 1.13 x 10(-6) cm(2).s(-1)(450 degrees C) and 2.142 x 10(-5) cm(2).s(-1)(450 degrees C), respectively. The measured standard electrode potential of Ho3+/Ho is 2.987 V(vs. Cl/Cl-), being more negative than the theoretical one, the reason of which is also discussed.

In the TCNQ-modified BLM, the voltammetric response is different due to the different methods used to prepare the membrane forming solution. The direct and indirect dissolved methods result in irreversible and reversible responses respectively. These results can be explained by the different styles of the orientation of TCNQ in the membrane. The reversible response is controlled by the diffusion of electroactive species in the interior of the membrane. When MB is used to modify the BLM, very complex voltammograms are obtained. The intersection of the voltammetric curves can be regarded to be owing to the appearance of new phase in the membrane caused by MB. But it disappears at lower scan rate. Peak current increases with decreasing scan rate. This indicates that the resistance of the membrane at lower scan rate is lower than that at higher scan rate. Asymmetric curve of MB incorporated BLM is ascribed to the different rates of redox reaction at the two membrane/solution interfaces.

The electrochemical behavior of the electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of thiol-functionalized viologen, CH3(CH2)(9)V2+(CH2)(8)SH, where V2+ is a viologen group, on the gold electrodes is examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical a.c. impedance. A monolayer of viologen is immobilized on the gold electrode surface via the Au-S bond and the normal potentials corresponding to the two successive one-electron transfer processes of the viologen active centers are -310 mV and -652 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 mol l(-1) phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.96) respectively. These results suggest that the viologen SAMs are stable and well-behaved monolayers. The experimental impedance data corresponding to different forms of viologen group have been fitted to equivalent electrical circuits, and the surface capacitances and resistances have been given. The heterogenous electron transfer rates of the first and the second redox processes are 7.57 s(-1) and 1.49 s(-1) respectively through a.c. impedance.

The electrochemical behavior of flavine adenine dinucleotide (FAD) at a gold electrode involving adsorption of the reduced form FADH(2) and desorption of the oxidized form FAD has been studied by using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). EQCM can present information not only about the electrochemical behavior but also about the mass changes on the electrode surface. The electrochemical properties and frequency shifts were investigated in FAD solutions at different pH values, concentrations and scan rates. Reversible voltammograms were observed when pH<4.5 and irreversible voltammograms were found when pH greater than or equal to 4.5. It is found to be a diffusion controlled process when the concentration of FAD is lower than 2x10(-4) moll(-1) (pH 1.5). On the contrary, at concentrations higher than 2x10(-4) moll(-1) (pH 1.5), it is found to be an adsorption controlled process.
