This article draws on a collaborative research project entitled Teachers Investigate Unequal Literacy Outcomes: Cross-generational Perspectives, funded by the Australian Research Council 2002-2004 and awarded to Barbara Comber, University of South Australia and Barbara Kamler, Deakin University. The university researchers invited early career teachers in their first five years of teaching, and late career teachers with at least twenty-five years experience, to collaboratively explore the problem of unequal outcomes in literacy. Over a period of three years, the teacher researchers conducted audits of their classroom literacy programs and the effects on different children; case studies of students they were most concerned about; and redesigns of their literacy curriculum and pedagogy.&nbsp; Bev Maney and Ivan Boyer collaborated as research partners in the context of their work together as English teachers at Portland Secondary College, Victoria. This paper is based on transcripts of their many conversations with one other and the research team and is represented as an interrupted conversation with the university researchers. Here they critique current models of professional development and the effects of standardised testing and argue for the importance of serious teacher conversations and ongoing school-based research.<br />

OBJECTIVES: The Overt Behaviour Scale (OBS) was designed as a comprehensive measure of common challenging behaviours observed after acquired brain injury (ABI) in community settings. The OBS comprises 34 items in nine categories that measure aggression, inappropriate sexual behaviour, perseveration, wandering, inappropriate social behaviour and lack of initiation. The aim of the current study was to determine the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the OBS. METHOD: Two adult community-based samples of people with ABI were recruited. Sample 1 (n= 30) were concurrently evaluated on the OBS by two raters and again 1 week later to test stability. Other validating scales were also administered. Sample 2 (n= 28) were clients of the ABI Behaviour Consultancy who were treated for challenging behaviours and were administered the OBS before treatment commenced and then again 4 months later. RESULTS: Inter-rater reliability and stability coefficients for the OBS total score was strong (0.97 and 0.77, respectively). Initial evidence of convergent and divergent validity was shown by the differential pattern of correlations with other measures. Moderate-to-strong coefficients (range 0.37-0.66) were observed between the OBS and other measures that had behavioural content (i.e. Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory, Current Behaviour Scale, Neurobehavioural Rating Scale-Revised). Divergent validity was shown by the lack of correlation between the OBS and the sub-scales of these tools that do not measure challenging behaviour. Finally, responsiveness was demonstrated with a significant decrease in OBS scores in the expected direction over the 4-month period. This improvement was confirmed by corroborating evidence from key informants. CONCLUSION: The OBS shows promise as a reliable, valid and responsive measure that can be used for the systematic assessment of challenging behaviours in community settings.<br />

Interactions between Australian fur seals (<i>Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus</i>) and the Southern Squid Jig Fishery (SSJF) were investigated in April&ndash;May 2002. Details on the number of seals present, distance from the vessel, age and gender, and their behaviour were recorded using scan sampling techniques over 26 nights from eight vessels operating out of Portland and Port Fairy on the southwest coast of Victoria. Seals were observed on all nights but none were recorded in 30% of all (777) scan observations. Of the seals attending vessels at any one time (1.89 &plusmn; 0.24), 67% were involved in activities unrelated to jigging operations with the most common behaviour category being resting/grooming. Only 3.6% of observations involved seals targeting squid caught on jig lures whereas a further 29% were of foraging on squid within 40 m of the vessel. Damage to fishing gear attributable to seals was recorded on only three occasions. There was no evidence of negative impacts on seals from vessel operations. The majority of seals foraging on squid around vessels were adult females (71%) with the remainder being almost exclusively juvenile males. The current level of interactions between Australian fur seals and vessels in the SSJF appears minor.<br />

The last few years have seen the identification of numerous small molecules that selectively inhibit specific class I isoforms of PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase), yet little has been revealed about the molecular basis for the observed selectivities. Using site-directed mutagenesis, we have investigated one of the areas postulated as being critical to the observed selectivity. The residues Thr<sup>886</sup> and Lys<sup>890</sup> of the PI3K&gamma; isoform project towards the ATP-binding pocket at the entrance to the catalytic site, but are not conserved. We have made reciprocal mutations between those residues in the &beta; isoform (Glu<sup>858</sup> and Asp<sup>862</sup>) and those in the &alpha; isoform (His<sup>855</sup> and Gln<sup>859</sup>) and evaluated the potency of a range of reported PI3K inhibitors. The results show that the potencies of &beta;-selective inhibitors TGX221 and TGX286 are unaffected by this change. In contrast, close analogues of these compounds, particularly the &alpha;-isoform-selective compound (III), are markedly influenced by the point mutations. The collected data suggests two distinct binding poses for these inhibitor classes, one of which is associated with potent PI3K&beta; activity and is not associated with the mutated residues, and a second that, in accord with earlier hypotheses, does involve this pair of non-conserved amino acids at the catalytic site entrance and contributes to the &alpha;-isoform-selectivity of the compounds studied.<br />

Skeletal muscle phenotype plays a critical role in human performance and health, and skeletal muscle oxidative capacity is a key determinant of exercise tolerance. More recently, defective muscle oxidative metabolism has been implicated in a number of conditions associated with the metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and muscle-wasting disorders. AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) is a critical regulator of cellular and organismal energy balance. AMPK has also emerged as a key regulator of skeletal muscle oxidative function, including metabolic enzyme expression, mitochondrial biogenesis and angiogenesis. AMPK mediates these processes primarily through alterations in gene expression. The present review examines the role of AMPK in skeletal muscle transcription and provides an overview of the known transcriptional substrates mediating the effects of AMPK on skeletal muscle phenotype.<br />

The thesis examines sources of economies of scale for the manufacture and distribution of Portland cement. Using cost models, it is shown that recent advances in technology have increased the economies of scale for efficient clinker production significantly, and to a lesser degree for finish grinding operations and bulk distribution.

This study assessed the viability of utilising groundwater systems to manage Portland Aluminium's trade waste water stream. A mathematical groundwater model was created to assess laboratory and field results. Fluoride was modelled for spatio-temporal longevity in the system. All models indicate that fluoride will ultimately exit the site to the seaward boundary.

Results of fauna and vegetation surveys conducted around Portland Aluminium smelter between 1979 and 2004 found small mammal abundance and diversity had declined and changes in vegetation communities were related to changes in fire patterns, vegetation fragmentation and weed invasion. Small mammal numbers were greater in nearby National Parks.
