A general method to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels has been presented. A series of organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels were successfully produced from 3d trivalent transition metals (Cr3+, Fe3+) and bridging carboxylic acids. Gelation of the Cr(III) gels was achieved by heating the precursor solution to temperatures above 80 degrees C, which is in sharp contrast to usual supramolecular gels. Among a range of ligands used, highly porous aerogels could be prepared from rigid carboxylate, e.g. 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate. The porous aerogels can be described as a coherent, rigid spongy network of continuous nanometre-sized particles, which is significantly different from the usual fibrous network of supramolecular gels. The aerogels have tunable porous structures with micro-and mesoporosity depending on their reactant concentrations. Their surface areas, pore volumes, and average pore sizes were analysed by using nitrogen sorption, and the accessibility of the pores to bulky molecules was also evaluated. It represents a strategy to prepare hybrid materials with large porosity utilising structurally simple building blocks as precursors.

Biomaterials include bioceramics, biometals, biopolymers and biocomposites and they play important roles in the replacement and regeneration of human tissues. However, dense bioceramics and dense biometals pose the problem of stress shielding due to their high Young's moduli compared to those of bones. On the other hand, porous biomaterials exhibit the potential of bone ingrowth, which will depend on porous parameters such as pore size, pore interconnectivity, and porosity. Unfortunately, a highly porous biomaterial results in poor mechanical properties. To optimise the mechanical and the biological properties, porous biomaterials with graded/gradient porosity, pores size, and/or composition have been developed. Graded/gradient porous biomaterials have many advantages over graded/gradient dense biomaterials and uniform or homogenous porous biomaterials. The internal pore surfaces of graded/gradient porous biomaterials can be modified with organic, inorganic, or biological coatings and the internal pores themselves can also be filled with biocompatible and biodegradable materials or living cells. However, graded/gradient porous biomaterials are generally more difficult to fabricate than uniform or homogenous porous biomaterials. With the development of cost-effective processing techniques, graded/gradient porous biomaterials can find wide applications in bone defect filling, implant fixation, bone replacement, drug delivery, and tissue engineering.

In this study, ceria-yttria co-stabilized zirconia (CYSZ) free-standing coatings, deposited by air plasma spraying (APS), were isothermally annealed at 1315 °C in order to explore the effect of sintering on the microstructure and the mechanical properties (i.e., hardness and Young's modulus). To this aim, coating microstructure, before and after heat treatment, was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, and image analysis was carried out in order to estimate porosity fraction. Moreover, Vickers microindentation and depth-sensing nanoindentation tests were performed in order to study the evolution of hardness and Young's modulus as a function of annealing time. The results showed that thermal aging of CYSZ coatings leads to noticeable microstructural modifications. Indeed, the healing of finer pores, interlamellar, and intralamellar microcracks was observed. In particular, the porosity fraction decreased from ~10 to ~5% after 50 h at 1315 °C. However, the X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that high phase stability was achieved, as no phase decomposition occurred after thermal aging. In turn, both the hardness and Young's modulus increased, in particular, the increase in stiffness (with respect to "as produced" samples) was equal to ~25%, whereas the hardness increased to up to ~60%. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely adopted to protect mechanical components in gas turbine engines operating at high temperature. Basically, the surface temperature of these components must be low enough to retain material properties within acceptable bounds and to extend component life. From this standpoint, air plasma-sprayed (APS) ceria and yttria co-stabilized zirconia (CYSZ) is particularly promising because it provides enhanced thermal insulation capabilities and resistance to hot corrosion. However, essential mechanical properties, such as hardness and Young's modulus, have been less thoroughly investigated. Knowledge of Young's modulus is of concern because it has a significant effect on strain tolerance and stress level and, hence, on durability. The focus of the present study was to determine the mechanical properties of APS CYSZ coatings. In particular, X-ray diffraction (XRD) is adopted for phase analysis of powders and as-sprayed coatings. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image analysis (IA) are employed to explore coating microstructure and porosity. Finally, the Young's modulus of the coating is determined using nanoindentation and a resonant method. The results obtained are then discussed and a cross-check on their consistency is carried out by resorting to a micromechanical model. © 2010 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

The optimisation of Fe and Al oxyhydroxide materials produced using industrial grade coagulants is presented in this work. The effects of synthesis pH and post-synthesis washing procedure onto the arsenic adsorption capacity of the materials were investigated. It was shown that the materials produced at higher pH were more efficient in removing As(V), especially after cleaning procedure. The materials produced at lower pH were less efficient in removing As(V) but the higher presence of sulphate groups in the materials produced at lower pH enhanced As(III) adsorption. Most performing materials can remove up to 84.7 mg As(V) g-1 or 77.9 mg As(III) g-1.

A 2D sandbox style experiment was developed to compare the results of numerical modelling to physical testing for saltwater intrusion in homogeneous and heterogeneous aquifers. The sandbox consisted of a thin central viewing chamber filled with glass beads of varying diameters (780μm, 1090μm and 1325μm) under fully saturated conditions. Dyed saltwater (SW) was introduced at the side boundary and a head difference imposed across the porous media. Images of the SW wedge were recorded at intervals in order to assess the suitability of the numerical models predictions of transient SW intrusion. Numerical modelling of the experimental cases were simulated using SUTRA. Two main parameters were chosen to express the condition of the intruding SW wedge at each recorded time step; the toe penetration length (TL) and the width of the mixing zone (WMZ). The WMZ was larger under transient conditions in the heterogeneous case, while the TL was longer for the homogeneous case. The increased variability in the flow field fo the heterogeneous case resulted in increased dispersion, and thus, increased WMZ.

Microstructure, tensile properties and fractography have been examined in the oil-quenched samples of a low-alloy ultrahigh strength 4340 steel. Intergranular fracture was revealed to locate at the fracture origin. However, neither the quenched Charpy V-notched impact samples nor the tempered tensile samples showed such intergranular fracture behavior. The effects of loading rate and precipitation are discussed.

In the process of room-temperature low cycle fatigue, the China Low Activation Martensitic steel exhibits at the beginning cyclic hardening and then continuous cyclic softening. The grain size decreased and the martensitic lath transformed to cells/subgrains after the tests. The subgrains increase in size with increasing strain amplitude.

A constitutive equation was established to describe the deformation behavior of a nitride-strengthened (NS) steel through isothermal compression simulation test. All the parameters in the constitutive equation including the constant and the activation energy were precisely calculated for the NS steel. The result also showed that from the stress-strain curves, there existed two different linear relationships between critical stress and critical strain in the NS steel due to the augmentation of auxiliary softening effect of the dynamic strain-induced transformation. In the calculation of processing maps, with the change of Zener-Hollomon value, three domains of different levels of workability were found, namely excellent workability region with equiaxed-grain microstructure, good workability region with “stripe” microstructure, and the poor workability region with martensitic-ferritic blend microstructure. With the increase of strain, the poor workability region first expanded, then shrank to barely existing, but appeared again at the strain of 0.6.

A Fe-8.46%Mn-0.24%Nb-0.038%C (wt.%) manganese steel was investigated. The steel has a 100% bcc structure after heat treatment at 850°C for 1.5 h, water quenching or air cooling. Martensite interlocked microstructure consisting of fine martensite plates/needles with different spatial orientations was found. Austenite forms, in small amounts, after a 600°C reheating treatment. Scanning electron microscopy images and energy dispersive spectrometry of the fracture surfaces revealed both ductile and brittle types of failure and precipitates. Deep quenching after the heat treatments does not change the phase composition or the hardness. NbC is formed in the steel, in high number densities. It plays a role in the impact fracture process, by acting as void nucleation sites, facilitating ductile fracture with dimples appearing on the fracture surface.

An yttrium aluminum (YAl2) intermetallic compound ingot was prepared in an induction furnace under vacuum. The microstructure of YAl2 ingot was characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The load bearing response of YAl2 intermetallic was investigated and compared with SiC ceramic by indentation combined with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, the tensile properties of the Mg–Li matrix composites reinforced with ultrafine YAl2 particles fabricated by planet ball milling were tested. The results show that the intermetallic compound ingot in this experiment is composed of a main face-centered-cubic structure YAl2 phase, a small amount of YAl phase, and minor Y and Al-rich phases. YAl2 intermetallic compound has excellent stability and shows better capability in crack resistance than SiC ceramic. The YAl2 intermetallic compound has better deformation compatibility with the Mg–14Li–3Al matrix than SiC reinforcement with the matrix, which leads to the superior resistance to crack for YAl2p/Mg–14Li–3Al composite compared to SiCp/Mg–14Li–3Al composite.

Epitaxial BaTiO3 films and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers were grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on (001)-oriented Nb-doped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:Nb) substrates. Measurements of the dielectric properties were performed comparing BaTiO3 films and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers of different number of individual layers, but equal overall thickness. The dielectric loss saturates for a thickness above 300 nm, and linearly decreases with decreasing film thickness below a thickness of 75 nm, and it is independent on the number of multilayers, pointing to some interface effect. The thickness dependence of the dielectric constant of BaTiO3 films and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers; exhibits a change in the linear slope at a thickness of 75 nm. This behavior is explained by the change observed in the morphology at a thickness of 75 nm. In order to explain the thickness dependence of the dielectric constant, two approaches are considered in this paper, viz. a "series capacitor" model and a "dead layer" model.

Electroless Ni–P (EN) and composite Ni–P–SiC (ENC) coatings were developed on cast aluminium alloy substrate, LM24. The coating phase composition, microstructure and microhardness were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microhardness tester, respectively, on as-plated and heat-treated specimens. The original microstructure of the Ni–P matrix is not affected by the inclusion of the hard particles SiC. No formation of Ni–Si phase was observed up to 500 °C of heat treatment. The microhardness is increased on incorporation of SiC in Ni–P matrix. The hardening mechanism is the formation of intermetallic phase Ni3P on annealing at elevated temperature.

The China Low Activation Martensitic (CLAM) steel has been developed as a candidate structural material for future fusion reactors. It is essential to investigate the evolution of microstructure and changes of mechanical properties of CLAM steel during thermal exposure. In this study, the long-term thermal aging of the CLAM steel has been carried out in air at 600 °C and 650 °C for 1100 h, 3000 h and 5000 h. The microstructural evolution with aging time was studied, including characteristics of the growth of M23C6 carbides and the formation of Laves-phase precipitates as well as the evolved subgrains. The microstructural evolution leads to the changes of mechanical properties of the CLAM steel. The Ductile–Brittle Transition Temperature (DBTT) increases significantly during the thermal aging, which is related to the formation of Laves-phase in the steel matrix. The possible mechanism of stabilizing microstructure during the thermal exposure has been analyzed based on the interaction between M23C6 carbides and subgrain boundaries.

Because of the requirements for the damage tolerance and fatigue life of commercial aircraft components, the high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties of Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–1Cr–1Fe titanium alloy forgings are important. The effects of microstructure types of the α+β titanium alloy on fatigue properties need to be understood. In this paper, by analysing the fracture surfaces of the titanium alloy having four types of microstructure, the effects of microstructure are investigated. The differences of initiation areas and crack propagation among different microstructures were studied. It was found that the area of the initiation region decreases in the order of coarse basketweave, fine basketweave, Widmanstätten, and bimodal microstructure.
