Death of two slender-billed parakeet (King) (Enicognathus leptorhynchus) (Aves, Psittacidae) by Ascaridia hermaphrodita (Froelich, 1789, Railliet & Henry, 1914) at the National Zoo of Santiago, Chile

No Zoológico Nacional do Parque Metropolitano de Santiago, Chile, foram encontrados dois psitacídeos Enicognathus leptorhynchus, mortos pelo nematódeo Ascaridia hermaphrodita (Froelich, 1789). Este é o primeiro registro desse nematódeo em E. leptorhynchus e também o primeiro registro deste parasito no Chile.

Adrien-Marie Legendre (1752-1833) e suas obras em Teoria dos Números

The present thesis is an analysis of Adrien-Marie Legendre s works on Number Theory, with a certain emphasis on his 1830 edition of Theory of Numbers. The role played by these works in their historical context and their influence on the development of Number Theory was investigated. A biographic study of Legendre (1752-1833) was undertaken, in which both his personal relations and his scientific productions were related to certain historical elements of the development of both his homeland, France, and the sciences in general, during the 18th and 19th centuries This study revealed notable characteristics of his personality, as well as his attitudes toward his mathematical contemporaries, especially with regard to his seemingly incessant quarrels with Gauss about the priority of various of their scientific discoveries. This is followed by a systematic study of Lagrange s work on Number Theory, including a comparative reading of certain topics, especially that of his renowned law of quadratic reciprocity, with texts of some of his contemporaries. In this way, the dynamics of the evolution of his thought in relation to his semantics, the organization of his demonstrations and his number theoretical discoveries was delimited. Finally, the impact of Legendre s work on Number Theory on the French mathematical community of the time was investigated. This investigation revealed that he not only made substantial contributions to this branch of Mathematics, but also inspired other mathematicians to advance this science even further. This indeed is a fitting legacy for his Theory of Numbers, the first modern text on Higher Arithmetic, on which he labored half his life, producing various editions. Nevertheless, Legendre also received many posthumous honors, including having his name perpetuated on the Trocadéro face of the Eiffel Tower, which contains a list of 72 eminent scientists, and having a street and an alley in Paris named after him

Resistência de genótipos de feijoeiro a Zabrotes subfasciatus (Bohemann, 1833) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)

Durante o armazenamento de grãos de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), o rendimento pode ser reduzido devido às infestações de carunchos como os da espécie Zabrotes subfasciatus (Bohemann, 1833) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). O ataque desse inseto afeta diretamente a qualidade dos grãos, além de facilitar a entrada de patógenos, tornando-os inviáveis para o consumo e/o comércio. Com a finalidade de buscar uma estratégia alternativa para o controle deste caruncho, avaliou-se a possível resistência de linhagens quase isogênicas contendo arcelina, linhagens selvagens contendo arcelina e cultivares comerciais de feijoeiro, em laboratório (T= 25±2° C, U.R.= 70±10% e fotoperíodo= 12h). Foram utilizados frascos contendo 10 g de grãos dos genótipos, os quais foram infestados por uma semana com sete casais do caruncho. Vinte e um dias após a infestação, os grãos foram avaliados contando-se o número de ovos viáveis. A partir de 25 dias da infestação, os grãos foram observados diariamente avaliando-se o número e o peso dos insetos emergidos, a viabilidade larval, o ciclo biológico (ovo-adulto) e o peso de grãos consumidos. Empregou-se um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com oito repetições. Os genótipos Arc.2, Arc.3, Arc.4, Arc.3S e Ipa 6 expressaram baixos níveis de não-preferência para oviposição e foram classificados como deterrentes. Os genótipos Arc.1S e Arc.1 expressaram elevados níveis de antibiose; Arc.2, Arc.3 e Arc.4 apresentam o mesmo mecanismo, porém, em níveis inferiores.

O desejo, o relato e a prática da cidade: de como são produzidos territórios marginais na cidade do príncipe (1880 - 1900)

The theme of this work is the study of marginal territories of the Cidade do Príncipe, sketch in time than today is constituted as the city of Caicó/RN, with the time frame the years 1880 to 1900. Our goal is to investigate the construction of these territories from multiple speech subjects practitioners of the city. Thus, we propose to discover the mapping of the deviation in the city in question, as they were drawn, those who experienced and through which practices. Investigate the construction of these spaces from the speeches, and fill a historiographical gap, allows to find stories sharp, silenced or ignored, abortions and madness in prison, repressed passions and avenged. To meet these spaces the sources are diverse, such as the newspaper O Povo, the Codes of posture, the Reports of Presidents and Heads of Provincial Police and process-crime. Regarding the methodological aspects of research, we decided by discourse analysis, discourse here conceived not only as what is said about someone or something, but as a set of statements circulating at any given time in society, articulating speech, intentions, actions and thought. The city is then considered from their territories, imagined as a space configured in/by the relations power that the dispute, but also as a space for experiences multiple, different feelings, place and non-place, the discipline and mockery, of power and resistance.

Size at maturity of Atlantoraja platana (Gunther, 1880) (Chondrichthyes : Rajidae : Arhynchobatinae) in the south-west Atlantic Ocean

The sexual development of Atlantoraja platana from the south-west Atlantic Ocean was analysed. According to the reproductive variables considered for both sexes, males were found to mature at 620 mm and females at 715 mm total length. Association of the stilt bug Jalysus ossesae Henry (Hemiptera : Heteroptera : Berytidae) with myrmecophytic plants of the genus Maieta (Melastomataceae) in an upland forest area in central Amazon, Brazil

Maieta guianensis Aubl. and M. poeppigii Mart. ex. Triana (Melastomataceae) are among the most common myrmecophytic plants in the Amazonian forest understory. These myrmecophytes are colonized exclusively by the ants Pheidole minutula Mayr or Crematogaster sp. and usually host two other arthropods, the spider Faiditus subflavus Exline and Levi and the recently described stilt bug Jalysus ossesae Henry. In this study, the association between J ossesae and the myrmecophytic plants M. guianensis and M. poeppigii in an upland forest area in central Amazon, Brazil, is described. The presence of the stilt bugs on M. guianensis and M. poeppigii and on plants around these myrmecophytes was recorded in five transects. The number and position of the stilt bugs on the leaf surface (upper or lower) and leaf type (with or without domatia) of these myrmecophytes, as well as their behavioral acts, were recorded. Jalysus ossesae was found only on the myrmecophytic plants M. guianensis and M. poeppigii. The stilt bug occurred at similar frequencies on M. guianensis and M. poeppigii, and the number of leaves significantly influenced the presence and number of stilt bugs on these myrmecophytes. Feeding, agonistic interaction between males, and mating were observed. Our data indicate that J. ossesae uses the myrmecophytes M. guinanensis and M. poeppigii as reproductive and foraging sites.

Aspectos biológicos, morfológicos e comportamentais de Aspidiotus nerii Bouché, 1833 (Hemiptera: Diaspididae)

Desenvolvimento de Rhapis excelsa (Thunberg) Henry Ex. Rehder (Palmeira-Ráfia): Influência da altura do recipiente na formação de mudas

Rhapis excelsa, originária do sul da China, é uma das palmeiras ornamentais mais cultivadas no mundo, principalmente em vaso. Objetivou-se com esta pesquisa investigar a influência da altura do vaso no desenvolvimento da espécie. Para tanto, mudas de dois anos de idade, apresentando 10 cm de altura e sistema radicular com 10 cm de comprimento, foram transplantadas para recipientes de PVC com 10 cm de diâmetro e 20, 25, 30, 35 e 40 cm de altura, que se constituíram em tratamentos. O substrato utilizado foi uma mistura de casca de pinho, vermiculita e solo argiloso (2:1:1), adubado com 45 g de Osmocote (15:10:10). Os parâmetros avaliados foram: altura da planta, diâmetro do colo, número de folhas, número de perfilhos emitidos, avaliados aos 6, 12 e 18 meses após a instalação do experimento. Aos 18 meses foram tomados também o peso da matéria seca da parte aérea e o peso da matéria seca das raízes. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com cinco repetições com duas plantas. Houve diferença significativa para a variável altura de plantas, aos 6 meses, sendo que o recipiente de 40 cm de altura apresentou o pior resultado. Não houve diferença significativa entre as variáveis analisadas aos 12 meses de investigação. Já aos 18 meses, houve diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos para as variáveis altura da planta e diâmetro do colo, sendo o recipiente de 40 cm inferior aos demais em relação à altura da planta e o de 25 cm superior quanto ao diâmetro do colo. A utilização do recipiente com 25 cm de altura revelou-se interessante pela qualidade das plantas formadas e em relação a aspectos econômicos da produção.

Description of an injury in a human caused by a false tocandira (Dinoponera gigantea, Perty, 1833) with a revision on folkloric, pharmacological and clinical aspects of the giant ants of the genera Paraponera and Dinoponera (sub-family Ponerinae)

A partir de um acidente causado pela picada de uma formiga falsa tocandira na mão de um pescador amador, os autores descrevem os achados clínicos locais observados, tais como edema, eritema e dor excruciante e a evolução do envenenamento, que cursou com fenômenos sistêmicos imediatos, como sudorese fria, náuseas, vômitos, mal estar, taquicardia e linfadenopatia axilar à esquerda. Após três horas, a dor intensa persistia e o paciente apresentou um episódio de hematoquesia, sem história anterior de enfermidades do trato digestivo, hematológicas ou vasculares. O uso de analgésicos (Tramal® 300 mg/dia), água quente e gelo não melhorou a dor, que arrefeceu em oito horas, tendo permanecido por cerca de 24 horas. São apresentados ainda os aspectos folclóricos, farmacológicos e clínicos relacionados às picadas de tocandiras.

Pelecitus helicinus Railliet & Henry, 1910 (Filarioidea, Dirofilariinae) and other nematode parasites of Brazilian birds

We report Pelecitus helicinus Railliet & Henry, 1910 from 13 species of birds of 2 orders and 7 families, collected from the states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso, Brazil. All 13 constitute new host records for this nematode. In addition, we report the first record of Aprocta golvani Diaz-Ungria, 1963 from Brazil and Monasa nigrifrons (Bucconidae), as well as a number of other nematode records from Neotropical birds.

Cytogenetic characterization of the silverside fish Odontesthes regia (Humboldt, 1833) (Teleostei: Atheriniformes: Atherinopsidae) from Iquique, Chile

This paper describes the karyotype of Odontesthes regia by means of Giemsa staining, C-banding, to reveal the distribution of the constitutive heterochromatin, and by Ag-staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), to locate ribosomal genes (rDNA). The chromosome diploid modal count in the species was 2n = 48. The karyotype is composed of one submetacentric pair (pair 1), 16 subtelocentric pairs (pairs 2 to 17), and 7 acrocentric pairs (pairs 18 to 24). With the exception of pair 1 it was not possible to classify the homologous chromosomes accurately because differences in chromosome size were too slight between adjacent pairs. The distribution of C-banded heterochromatin allowed for a more accurate matching of the majority of chromosomes of the subtelocentric series. Silver staining of metaphase spreads allowed for the identification of Nucleolus Organizer Regions (Ag-NOR) on pair 1. FISH experiments showed that 18S rDNA sequences were located, as expected, in the same chromosome pair identified as the Ag-NOR-bearing one.
