We observed that the SrMg2(PO4)(2):Eu phosphor could emit long life phosphorescence with the excitation light whose wavelength was shorter than 420 nm, however, when La, Ce, or Gd was codoped, the wavelength of the excitation light to cause the phosphorescence had a redshift of 40 nm. A possible mechanism and related discussion for this redshift phenomenon of the excitation light was given. It was suggested that the threshold between the trap and valence band was decreased with the addition of the codopants.

Solvent free polyaniline emeraldine base(EB) corrosion protection coating was prepared, employing aliphatic polyamine as solvent of EB as well as hardener of epoxy resin. This coating passed 2000h of salt fog test when the EB loading was about 1 wt%. The interaction between EB and iron indicated that EB acted as a "quasi-catalyst" to cause the formation of densed iron oxide film in the interface.

Porphyra katadae Miura var. hemiphylla Tseng et T. J. Chang, a species distributed around the Liaodong and Shandong Peninsulas of China, produces gametophytes from late winter to early spring. These are monoecious with male and female reproductive tissues in distinct halves or sectors. Vegetative tissues from sectors expected to differentiate into sexual tissue were cultured in the laboratory. Male and female reproductive organs, as well as conchocelis and blades, were differentiated from these tissues. The male and female reproductive tissues were in patches and mixed on the cultured tissue pieces. This was quite different from the wild-type sectored individuals. The F-1 conchospore germlings also produced monospores, carposporangia, spermatangia and conchocelis. These carposporangia and spermatangia were in patches and were mixed on the F-1 fronds. The results imply that P. katadae var. hemiphylla is possibly sex-differentiated rather than sex-determined. This is the first report of such a dimorphic life history in the genus Porphyra.

Bangia fuscopurpurea (Rhodophyta) was cultivated in Putian (Fujian province, China). The characteristics of the life history concerned with cultivation were investigated and the cultivation procedure was presented. The gametophytic phase (thallus) and the sporophytic phase (conchocelis) occurred alternately in the life history of B. fuscopurpurea. Young thalli produced archeospores, and the number depended on the environmental factors. Temperature affected the number of archeospore release and percent of germination, and photo flux density (PFD) mainly affected the time of spore release and germination. Thalli matured from December to February and developed into the conchocelis phase through sexual reproduction. The conchocelis grown in shells had three developmental stages: vegetative conchocelis, conchosporangiall formation and conchospore formation. Pit-connections were present in the first 2 stages but absent after conchospore formation. Vegetative conchocelis and conchosporangial. branches can transform into each other. However, conchospores only developed into the gametophytic phase. Cultivation of B. fuscopurpurea was based on characterization of the life history, consisting of 3 steps: zygotospores collection, indoor cultivation of conchocelis and outdoor cultivation of thalli. Young thalli that developed from conchospores produced numerous archeospores before December. Over 90% of the crop was from the development of archeospores. The results indicated that conchosporelings were a good source of archeospores, and the development of the large quantity of archeospores acted as a more prevailing means to increase the population size. Ecological and physiological features of the planktonic copepod Calanus sinicus in the southern Yellow Sea in summer were studied to reveal its life history strategy. From the coastal shallow waters to the central part of the southern Yellow Sea, a shift of the stage composition occurs from being dominated by the egg-nauplius stage to being dominated by the fifth copepodite (CV) stage. Most CVs reside in the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (YSCWM), where both temperature and food abundance are low. CVs in the YSCWM have longer body lengths, heavier body weights and higher carbon contents than those outside the YSCWM. Onboard incubations show that the development of CVs in the YSCWM is suspended. Energy conservation, development suspension and lack of diel vertical migration (DVM) behavior suggest a diapause status for the CVs in the YSCWM, although vertical distribution patterns indicate the CV individuals are not fully synchronous in physiology and development. This adaptive oversummering strategy would help C. sinicus to live through the warm and food-limited summer in the central part of the southern Yellow Sea; both low temperature and low food supply are necessary for CV to maintain the resting state in the YSCWM. Calanus sinicus exhibits different life history strategies in different regions of the southern Yellow Sea in summer.

The effects of a PSP producing dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense on marine bivalves at their several important life, stages: egg, D - shape larva, eyespot larva, juvenile and adult, were studied! The results show that the hitching survival, activity, filtration and! growth were adversely affected by the alga and the impact was significantly increased with the increase of algal density. The inhibitory effect on egg hatching was most significant, which the hatching rate was only 30% of the control when exposed to the alga at 100 cell/cm(3) after 36 h. Further experiments show that the algal culture, re-suspended cells and cell fragments had the inhibitory effect, while no such effect was from the cell-free medium, cell contents and standard STX. The results indicate that the alga could produce unknown toxins, rather than PSP, associated with the cell surface.

Polysaccharides isolated from Porphyra (porphyran) have been known to have diverse biological activities, including immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities. The molecular weight-antiaging activity relationship of degraded porphyrans was examined in this study. Natural porphyran was extracted from P. haitanensis, and then was degraded into different molecular weight fractions, P1 molecular weight 49 kDa, P2 molecular weight 30 kDa, P3 molecular weight 8.2 kDa, by free radical. The influence on life span and vitality of porphyrans were carried out on Drosophila melanogaster. We found that all the degraded porphyrans and natural porphyran (P), added daily to the diet, can significantly increase the life span of D. melanogaster, except for P3. Among them, P1 exhibited the most prolonging life span activity. Furthermore, vitality of middle-aged flies (assessed by measuring their mating capacity) receiving porphyrans was increased considerably in comparison with the controls. Finally, in the heat-stress test, we observed a remarkable increase in survival time, especially in P3-diet groups. These results suggest that porphyrans may be effective in reducing the rate of the aging process and molecular weight has important influence on the effects. It seems that P1 and P2, possessed higher molecular weight, may be more useful in normal metabolic condition and P3, possessed the lowest molecular weight, may be more beneficial for D. melanogaster in stress condition. In the present paper, a 60 h life-time test of a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) at a current density of 20 mA cm(-2) (the beginning 38 h) and 40 mA cm(-2) (the last 22 h) was carried out. After the life-time test, the MEA could not achieve the former performance. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) were employed to characterize the anode and cathode catalyst before and after the life-time test. The XRD and TEM results showed that the particle size of the anode catalyst increased from 2.3 to 3.3 nm and the cathode from 3.0 to 4.6 nm. The EDX results of PtSn/C anode catalysts before and after the life-time test indicated that the content of the oxygen and tin, especially the content of the platinum, decreased prominently after the life-time test. The results suggest that the agglomeration of electrocatalysts, the destruction of the anode catalyst together with the fuel/water crossover from anode to cathode concurrently contribute to the performance degradation of the DEFC. This study describes relocation experiences of older people moving to supported housing in Scotland focusing on the nature of support. Using mixed methods, Phase one involved a Scottish cross-sectional survey of all people aged 65 and over moving into Coburg (Scotland) Housing Association supported accommodation during the first six months of 2008. A total of 122 respondents were included in the survey (59% response rate). People moved locally at advanced ages with moderate disability levels to achieve more manageable housing and support, suggesting ‘assistance migration’. Expectations were high, with many seeing it as a new start in life and generally positive views of moving were reported. In Phase two, five in-depth multiple-perspective longitudinal case studies were conducted to explore the experience of relocation into supported housing. In each case an older person, primary carer and the housing manager - all women – were interviewed over six months following relocation. Analysis was undertaken using a thematic framework approach (Ritchie et al., 2003). Findings suggested older women acted with agency to adapt to their new lives; recreating ‘normality’ through organising space and routines. It is argued that returning to normality formed the overarching objective of the older women as they sought to feel ‘in place’. Responsibilities for meeting assistance needs were often implicit, contested and shifting, leading to fragile, uncertain and transitory arrangements. Drawing on recent advances in developmental psychology it is argued ‘longings’ of older people, and others, to achieve an optimal life can relate and motivate towards actions such as relocation. Yet, personal ‘longings’ can be prioritised differently and may result in disputes over goal setting and ways needs are met. Further, utopian ideals must be reconciled with the reality of daily life. Policy and practitioners could adopt broader, dignity based objectives to assist older people to identify ways of aiding such reconciliation.

Integrating connectivity patterns into marine ecosystem management is a fundamental step, specially for stock subjected to the combined impacts of human activities (overfishing, habitat degradation, etc.) and climate changes. Thus, management of marine resources must incorporates the spatial scales over which the populations are connected. Notwithstanding, studying these dynamics remains a crucial and hard task and the predictions of the temporal and spatial patterns of these mechanisms are still particularly challenging. This thesis aims to puzzle over the red mullet Mullus barbatus population connectivity in the Western Mediterranean Sea, by implementing a multidisciplinary approach. Otolith sclerochronology, larval dispersal modelling and genetic techniques were gathered in this study. More particularly, this research project focused on early life history stages of red mullet and their role in the characterization of connectivity dynamics. The results show that M. barbatus larval dispersal distances can reach a range of 200 km. The differences in early life traits (i.e. PLD, spawning and settlement dates) observed between various areas of the Western Mediterranean Sea suggest a certain level of larval patchiness, likely due to the occurrence of different spawning pulses during the reproductive period. The dispersal of individuals across distant areas, even not significant in demographic terms, is accountable for the maintenance of the genetic flow among different demes. Fluctuations in the level of exchange among different areas, due to the variability of the source-sink dynamics, could have major implications in the population connectivity patterns. These findings highlight the reliability of combining several approaches and represent a benchmark for the definition of a proper resource management, with considerable engagements in effectively assuring the beneficial effects of the existent and future conservation strategies.

BACKGROUND The assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in hepatitis C (HCV) infected individuals continues to gain importance. However, rarely do reviews of this literature consider quantitative and qualitative accounts of HRQoL collectively, which only allows partial insight into the topic. This narrative review aims to address this gap in the literature. METHODS Literature searches were conducted using seven databases with two separate search strategies, and results assessed for eligibility using specific inclusion/exclusion criteria; a data extraction sheet was used to identify the dominant themes for each research paradigm which were then distilled to key findings to construct the narrative. RESULTS Quantitative investigation reveals a low HRQoL in individuals with HCV due to a complex multifactorial cause. During treatment for HCV, a further transient reduction is observed, followed by improvement if a sustained virological response is achieved. Qualitative data provide a recognisable voice to the everyday challenges experienced by individuals with HCV including insights into diagnosis and stigmatisation, contextualising how a reduced HRQoL is experienced day-to-day. Methodological limitations of these findings are then discussed. Much of the quantitative data has little relevance to current substance users as they are excluded from most trials, and appraisal of the qualitative literature reveals a marked difference in the lived experience of HCV infected current substance users and that of other HCV groups. CONCLUSION Concurrent analysis of quantitative and qualitative paradigms provides a deeper understanding of the true burden of HCV illness on HRQoL. Greater utilisation of qualitative research within international clinical guidelines is likely to be of benefit in identifying relevant HRQoL outcomes for substance users.
