An extensive repertoire of protein 4.1R isoforms is predominantly generated by alternative pre-mRNA splicing and differential usage of two translation initiation sites. The usage of the most upstream ATG (ATG-1) generates isoforms containing N-terminal extensions of up to 209 aa compared with those translated from the downstream ATG (ATG-2). To characterize nonerythroid 4.1R proteins translated from ATG-1 and analyze their intracellular localization, we cloned 4.1R cDNAs containing this translation initiation site. Six different clones were isolated from the nucleated human MOLT-4 T-cell line by reverse transcriptase–PCR techniques. Transient expression of the six ATG-1-translated 4.1R isoforms tagged with a c-Myc epitope revealed that all of them predominantly distributed to the plasma membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum. Staining of MOLT-4 cell plasma membranes but not nuclei was also observed by immunofluorescence microscopy by using an antibody specific to the N-terminal extension. Consistent with this, the antibody reacted with a major endogenous protein of ≈145 kDa present in nonnuclear but absent from nuclear fractions prepared from MOLT-4 cells. Because these data suggested that ATG-1-translated 4.1R isoforms were predominantly excluded from the nucleus, we fused the 209-aa domain to nuclear 4.1R isoforms encoded from ATG-2 and observed that this domain inhibited their nuclear targeting. All these results indicate that the N-terminal domain of ATG-1-translated 4.1R isoforms plays a pivotal role in differential targeting of proteins 4.1R.

We have identified two genes from Arabidopsis that show high similarity with CBF1, a gene encoding an AP2 domain-containing transcriptional activator that binds to the low-temperature-responsive element CCGAC and induces the expression of some cold-regulated genes, increasing plant freezing tolerance. These two genes, which we have named CBF2 and CBF3, also encode proteins containing AP2 DNA-binding motifs. Furthermore, like CBF1, CBF2 and CBF3 proteins also include putative nuclear-localization signals and potential acidic activation domains. The CBF2 and CBF3 genes are linked to CBF1, constituting a cluster on the bottom arm of chromosome IV. The high level of similarity among the three CBF genes, their tandem organization, and the fact that they have the same transcriptional orientation all suggest a common origin. CBF1, CBF2, and CBF3 show identical expression patterns, being induced very rapidly by low-temperature treatment. However, in contrast to most of the cold-induced plant genes characterized, they are not responsive to abscisic acid or dehydration. Taken together, all of these data suggest that CBF2 and CBF3 may function as transcriptional activators, controlling the level of low-temperature gene expression and promoting freezing tolerance through an abscisic acid-independent pathway.

We have studied in detail the properties of local active star-forming galaxies from the UCM survey, and in particular their star-formation histories. We have quantified the relative importance of the current episode of star formation in comparison to the underlying older stellar populations. We have also determined the total stellar mass function and burst mass function for the UCM sample using the M/L calculated for each galaxy. Integrating this mass function we obtained the contribution of the star-forming galaxies to the total stellar mass density of the local Universe.

Context. Accretion onto supermassive black holes is believed to occur mostly in obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN). Such objects are proving rather elusive in surveys of distant galaxies, including those at X-ray energies. Aims. Our main goal is to determine whether the revised IRAC criteria of Donley et al. (2012, ApJ, 748, 142; objects with an infrared (IR) power-law spectral shape), are effective at selecting X-ray type-2 AGN (i.e., absorbed N_H > 10^22 cm^-2). Methods. We present the results from the X-ray spectral analysis of 147 AGN selected by cross-correlating the highest spectral quality ultra-deep XMM-Newton and the Spitzer/IRAC catalogues in the Chandra Deep Field South. Consequently it is biased towards sources with high S/N X-ray spectra. In order to measure the amount of intrinsic absorption in these sources, we adopt a simple X-ray spectral model that includes a power-law modified by intrinsic absorption at the redshift of each source and a possible soft X-ray component. Results. We find 21/147 sources to be heavily absorbed but the uncertainties in their obscuring column densities do not allow us to confirm their Compton-Thick nature without resorting to additional criteria. Although IR power-law galaxies are less numerous in our sample than IR non-power-law galaxies (60 versus 87 respectively), we find that the fraction of absorbed (N_H^intr > 10^22 cm^-2) AGN is significantly higher (at about 3 sigma level) for IR-power-law sources (similar to 2/3) than for those sources that do not meet this IR selection criteria (~1/2). This behaviour is particularly notable at low luminosities, but it appears to be present, although with a marginal significance, at all luminosities. Conclusions. We therefore conclude that the IR power-law method is efficient in finding X-ray-absorbed sources. We would then expect that the long-sought dominant population of absorbed AGN is abundant among IR power-law spectral shape sources not detected in X-rays.

En el marco del proyecto de Redes de Investigación en Docencia Universitaria 2010-11 de la Universidad de Alicante se creó una red de trabajo formada por los profesores encargados de la docencia del segundo curso de Grado en Óptica y Optometría. El objetivo principal de esta red ha sido la elaboración de las guías docentes de las asignaturas que constituyen dicho curso, así como la coordinación de las actividades docentes de las mismas. Para ello, se debatieron las propuestas de las diferentes asignaturas, en lo que respecta a evaluación continua y evaluación de competencias transversales, y se estableció un cronograma global del curso, ubicando las actividades docentes presenciales y aquellas que contribuyen con un peso determinado a la calificación final. Con este cronograma se pudo visualizar la carga de trabajo del alumno semanalmente, así como debatir las dificultades a las que se enfrenta para superar las diversas pruebas de evaluación continua en una determinada asignatura y cómo éstas afectan al rendimiento del resto de asignaturas.

The growing demand for physical rehabilitation processes can result in the rising of costs and waiting lists, becoming a threat to healthcare services’ sustainability. Telerehabilitation solutions can help in this issue by discharging patients from points of care while improving their adherence to treatment. Sensing devices are used to collect data so that the physiotherapists can monitor and evaluate the patients’ activity in the scheduled sessions. This paper presents a software platform that aims to meet the needs of the rehabilitation experts and the patients along a physical rehabilitation plan, allowing its use in outpatient scenarios. It is meant to be low-cost and easy-to-use, improving patients and experts experience. We show the satisfactory results already obtained from its use, in terms of the accuracy evaluating the exercises, and the degree of users’ acceptance. We conclude that this platform is suitable and technically feasible to carry out rehabilitation plans outside the point of care.

Platinum nanoparticles supported on titania efficiently catalyzed the diboration of alkynes and alkenes under solvent- and ligand-free conditions in air. The cis-1,2-diborylalkenes and 1,2-diborylalkanes were obtained in moderate to excellent yields following, in most cases, a simple filtration workup protocol. The versatility of the cis-1,2-diboronvinyl compounds was demonstrated in a series of organic transformations, including the Suzuki–Miyaura cross coupling and the boron–halogen exchange.

Palladium-catalyzed Heck alkynylation cross-coupling reactions between terminal alkynes and deactivated aryl chlorides and aryl bromides can be performed in the absence of copper cocatalyst with water as solvent at 130 °C under microwave irradiation. An oxime-derived chloro-bridged palladacycle is an efficient precatalyst for this transformation with 2-dicyclohexylphosphanyl-2′,4′,6′-triisopropylbiphenyl (XPhos) as ancillary ligand, pyrrolidine as base, and SBDS as surfactant. All of the reactions can be performed under air and with reagent-grade chemicals under low loading conditions (0.1–1 mol-% Pd).

En el marco del proyecto de Redes de Investigación en Docencia Universitaria 2012-13 de la Universidad de Alicante se creó una red de trabajo formada por los profesores encargados de la docencia del cuarto curso de Grado en Óptica y Optometría. La experiencia adquirida durante la implementación de los tres primeros cursos de dicho Grado ha puesto de manifiesto la necesidad de que exista un trabajo previo de desarrollo de contenidos y de organización temporal. El objetivo principal de esta red ha sido la coordinación entre los profesores de las diferentes asignaturas para evitar repeticiones y asegurar la consecución de las competencias previstas, así como una buena distribución de la carga docente y de las pruebas de evaluación. Para ello, se debatieron las propuestas de las diferentes asignaturas y se estableció un cronograma global del curso ubicando todas las actividades docentes que contribuyen con un peso determinado a la calificación final. Con este cronograma se pudo visualizar la carga de trabajo del alumno semanalmente, así como debatir las dificultades a las que se enfrenta para superar las diversas pruebas de evaluación continua en una determinada asignatura y cómo éstas afectan al rendimiento del resto de asignaturas.

A highly regio- and stereoselective oxime palladacycle/imidazolinium-catalyzed head to head dimerization of terminal aryl alkynes in water is presented. The reaction, which is carried out at 130 °C under microwave irradiation in the presence of 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolinium chloride as ligand, triethylamine as base, and TBAB as surfactant, allows the synthesis of (E)-1,4-enynes as single stereoisomers in good isolated yields.

The palladium-catalyzed synthesis of dihydroisobenzofurans has been performed by sequential Sonogashira cross-coupling/cyclization reactions between terminal alkynes and 2-(hydroxymethyl)bromo- and chlorobenzenes in methanol as solvent at 130 °C under microwave irradiation. A 4,4′-dichlorobenzophenone oxime-derived chloro-bridged palladacycle is an efficient pre-catalyst to perform this tandem process using 2-dicyclohexylphosphanyl-2′,4′,6′-triisopropylbiphenyl (Xphos) as ancillary ligand and potassium hydroxide as base in the absence of a copper cocatalyst. Under these conditions, functionalized 2-bromo- and 2-chlorobenzaldehydes are also suitable partners in the domino process affording phthalans in good yields. All the reactions can be performed under air and employing reagent-grade chemicals under low loading conditions (1 mol% Pd).
