Poly-Articulate was a series of meditations around the paradoxes of articulation, considered in the heterogeneity of its material, visual, aural and conceptual aspects. Taking form through a collaborative working group of four artists/ designers/writers, the project used different technologies from the most ancient (the voice-box) to the most current (real-time rendering engines). With the utilisation of laser sensors crossing the gallery spaces, 20 digital monitors accompanied by vocal syllables would respond to the viewers? movement. Another piece of technology?a theramin installed below the sculpture of a trachea (inner ear)?mutated the vocal sounds upon its engagement along with a microphone suspended in one of the galleries. The visual and sound aspects of this project made it a compelling spatial experience.

An interactive CDRom accompanied with a text by Justin Clemens was published with this project.

The Mundiad is a mock epic poem in heroic couplets. Modelled on structures of classical epics such as Homer's Iliad, Virgil's Aeneid and Milton's Paradise Lost, yet set in the contemporary world of globalisation, the poem celebrates the detritus of everyday life Kylie Minogue, pornography, new ageism, genetic engineering, IVF, screen culture, among many others. Reviving the ancient poetic ambition to speak differently about the things of this world, The Mundiad is startlingly original and is destined to be a cult classic.

The Sustainable Farm Families project (http://www.sustainablefarmfamilies.org.au/) was a 3-year demonstration and education project designed to influence farmer behavior with respect to family health and well-being among cropping and grazing farmers in Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia, Australia. The project was conducted by the Western District Health Service, Hamilton, Australia, in partnership with farmers; Farm Management 500 (peer discussion group); the Victorian Farmers Federation; Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology; and Land Connect. During the 3 years of the project, 128 farmers&mdash;men (70) and women (58)&mdash;were enrolled. The project utilized a combination of small group workshops, individualized health action plans, and health education opportunities to encourage farm safety and health behavior changes and to elicit sustained improvements in the following health indicators: body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, and blood pressure. Mean changes in these health indicators were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and McNemar's test compared the proportion of individuals with elevated indicators. Among participants with elevated values at baseline, the following average reductions were observed: BMI 0.44 kg/m2 (p = .0034), total cholesterol 48.7 mg/dl (p < .0001), blood glucose 10.1 mg/dl (p = .0016), systolic blood pressure 12.5 mm Hg (p < .0001), and diastolic blood pressure 5.0 mm Hg (p = .0007). The proportion of participants with elevated total cholesterol at baseline decreased after 24 months (p < .001). Such findings suggest that proactive intervention by farmer associations, rural health services, and government agencies may be an effective vehicle for promoting voluntary farm safety and health behavior change while empowering farm families to achieve measurable reductions in important health risk factors.

Reabsorption of filtered urea by the kidney is essential for retaining high levels of urea in marine cartilaginous fish. Our previous studies on the shark facilitative urea transporter (UT) suggest that additional UT(s) comprising the urea reabsorption system could exist in the cartilaginous fish kidney. Here, we isolated three cDNAs encoding UTs from the kidney of elephant fish, Callorhinchus milii, and termed them efUT-1, efUT-2 and efUT-3. efUT-1 is orthologous to known elasmobranch UTs, while efUT-2 and efUT-3 are novel UTs in cartilaginous fish. Two variants were found for efUT-1 and efUT-2, in which the NH2sub>-terminal intracellular domain was distinct between the variants. Differences in potential phosphorylation sites were found in the variant-specific NH2-terminal domains. When expressed in Xenopus oocytes</i>, all five UT transcripts including the efUT-1 and efUT-2 variants induced more than a 10-fold increase in [14sup>C] urea uptake. Phloretin inhibited dose-dependently the increase of urea uptake, suggesting that the identified UTs are facilitative UTs. Molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that efUT-1 and efUT-2 had diverged in the cartilaginous fish lineage, while efUT-3 is distinct from efUT-1 and efUT-2. The present finding of multiple UTs in elephant fish provides a key to understanding the molecular mechanisms of urea reabsorption system in the cartilaginous fish kidney.

The field of environmental education faces a process of continuous conceptual reconstruction that is underpinned by the complexity of the social and political changes occurring throughout the world as consequences of environmental crises and the different perspectives through which they are understood in different contexts. Thus there is a need to review and reflect on the meanings of environmental education, its theory and its practice. To address such issues the seminar, 'Environmental Education: from policy to practice', was held at King's College London in March 2001, under the sponsorship of the British Council and directed by Justin Dillon. The seminar brought together environmental educators from a broad spectrum--policy developers, researchers and practitioners--from Belize, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, India, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Singapore, Swaziland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. During a thought-provoking six days the seminar discussed a diverse range of ideas about the current trends and future practices in environmental education. In this report we present our 'reading' and reflection on two major aspects of the discussion: the meanings of environmental education and education for sustainable development in different cultures and contexts. This we do from our own positions as academics working on environmental education in Latin American contexts.

Bird song is generally regarded as a sexually selected trait, and may represent a reliable handicap signal under at least certain conditions. Females may use the degree of male song production as a reliable cue to male condition or territory quality. We investigated the effect of supplementary feeding on song output in the migratory Australian reed warbler Acrocephalus australis. We experimentally increased the food availability on alternate days, and recorded several weather variables. We measured song rate and song length independently. Supplementary fed birds sang more on feeding days than on non-feeding days, while control birds did not show this effect. Song output was not significantly associated with any of the weather variables examined. Our results indicate that singing has the potential to serve as a reliable handicap signal to territorial food availability irrespective of the prevailing weather conditions. We discuss the role of energetic constraints and behavioural flexibility on the signaling function of song.

The vast majority of bird species build a nest in which to breed. Some species build more than one nest, but the function of most multiple nest-building remains unclear. Here we describe the unusual nest-building behaviour of the Australian Reed Warbler Acrocephalus australis, and test experimentally the hypotheses that multiple nest-building is related to individual condition or territory quality, and plays a role in mate assessment. Australian Reed Warblers built two types of nest structures: 'type I' nests, which were used for eggs and nestlings, and 'type II' nests, which were structurally distinct from type I nests, did not support eggs, nestlings or adults and were not essential for successful breeding. The number of type II nests built in each territory varied. Type II nests were only built before breeding had commenced in a territory and females were not observed participating in their construction, supporting a role in female mate choice. Birds provided with supplementary food built significantly more type II nests than control birds. However, supplementary-fed birds did not have greater pairing success, and the addition of further type II nests to territories did not increase the pairing rate or type II nest construction in those territories. There was no relationship between the presence of type II nests and either reproductive success or likelihood of nest predation. We discuss the implications of these results in light of previous suggestions regarding the function of multiple nest-building in birds.

This research tested the effectiveness of a graphical approach to passwords. A field-experiment, in which graphical passwords were used by 185 subjects, helped to evaluate the approach. It was found that although graphical passwords were successfully used to authenticate useres, more work is required to ensure they are more usable.

This thesis provides an examination of exercise dependence (EXD) among elite Australian athletes. The research identifies the main symptoms of EXD among elite athletes as excessive training, withdrawal, and continuance behaviours. EXD was found to be associated with irrational beliefs relating to training, low self esteem, and limited social support. The portfolio presents four case studies illustrating the use of solution focused brief counselling with athletes and drawing attention to the utility of a solution focused approach as an effective tool in sport psychology consultancy.

E-Health systems logically demand a sufficiently fine-grained authorization policy for access control. The access to medical information should not be just role-based but should also include the contextual condition of the role to access data. In this paper, we present a mechanism to extend the standard role-based access control to incorporate contextual information for making access control decisions in e-health application. We present an architecture consisting of authorisation and context infrastructure that work cooperatively to grant access rights based on context-aware authorization policies and context information.

Plasmodium falciparum causes the virulent form of malaria and disease manifestations are linked to growth inside infected erythrocytes. To survive and evade host responses the parasite remodels the erythrocyte by exporting several hundred effector proteins beyond the surrounding parasitophorous vacuole membrane. A feature of exported proteins is a pentameric motif (RxLxE/Q/D) that is a substrate for an unknown protease. Here we show that the protein responsible for cleavage of this motif is plasmepsin V (PMV), an aspartic acid protease located in the endoplasmic reticulum. PMV cleavage reveals the export signal (xE/Q/D) at the amino terminus of cargo proteins. Expression of an identical mature protein with xQ at the N terminus generated by signal peptidase was not exported, demonstrating that PMV activity is essential and linked with other key export events. Identification of the protease responsible for export into erythrocytes provides a novel target for therapeutic intervention against this devastating disease.
