Legs 106-109 achieved the first basaltic bare-rock drill hole, on a small volcano (Serocki volcano) located on the flanks of the rift valley in the MAR about 70 km south of the Kane fracture zone. Because of severe technical difficulties only 50.5 m of basalt below seafloor was recovered. Geochemical analysis shows that the recovered basalts display typical N-MORB characteristics as expected in this segment of the Mid-Atlantic ridge. The lava flows display rather equivalent geochemical characteristics all over the drilled section and show the imprint of a previous magmatic differentiation suffered by the magmas before their emission, indicative of a fractional crystallization of plagioclase-bearing cumulates. The incompatible and alkali element content of these 648B magmas is very low, a feature which resembles those of other N-MORB. The geochemical characteristics of these basalts look closely similar to those of basalts from the same flow line emitted respectively 10 m.y. (Hole 395, Legs 45-46), and 110 m.y. (Hole 417A, Legs 51-53) ago, supporting the persistence in this ridge segment of a mantle source with depleted characteristics over the last 110 m.y., but with some variations in the degree of depletion of the source along this period. Although these rocks appear fresh, the imprint of an incipient low temperature alteration can be noticed in a few samples, as evidenced by slight increases of alkali, U elements, and 87Sr/86Sr isotopic compositions.

Hydrographical changes of the southern Indian Ocean over the last 230 kyr, is reconstructed using a 17-m-long sediment core (MD 88 770; 46°01'S 96°28'E, 3290m). The oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of planktonic (N. pachyderma sinistra and G. bulloides) and benthic (Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi, Epistominella exigua, and Melonis barleeanum) foraminifera have been analysed. Changes in sea surface temperatures (SST) are calculated using diatom and foraminiferal transfer functions. A new core top calibration for the Southern Ocean allows an extension of the method developed in the North Atlantic to estimate paleosalinities (Duplessy et al., 1991). The age scale is built using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dating of N. pachyderma s. for the last 35 kyr, and an astronomical age scale beyond. Changes in surface temperature and salinity clearly lead (by 3 to 7 kyr) deep water variations. Thus changes in deep water circulation are not the cause of the early response of the surface Southern Ocean to climatic changes. We suggest that the early warming and cooling of the Southern Ocean result from at least two processes acting in different orbital bands and latitudes: (1) seasonality modulated by obliquity affects the high-latitude ocean surface albedo (sea ice coverage) and heat transfer to and from the atmosphere; (2) low-latitude insolation modulated by precession influences directly the atmosphere dynamic and related precipitation/ evaporation changes, which may significantly change heat transfer to the high southern latitudes, through their control on latitudinal distribution of the major frontal zones and on the conditions of intermediate and deep water formation.

Geochemical (atomic absorption, neutron activation analyses), mineralogical (microprobe), and radiometric (40K - 40Ar) data are presented for five basalts from the Guatemala Trench area (Deep Sea Drilling Project, Leg 84). Strong geochemical and mineralogical differences distinguish two types among these basalts: (1) One basalt (Sample 567A-19,CC), recovered below Upper Cretaceous limestone has the following characteristics: it is quartz normative and has low TiO2, content, as well as low amounts of Cr, Ni and other transition metals, an LREE depleted pattern, and affinities of clinopyroxene phenocryst plotted into the field of tholeiitic and calc-alkalic pyroxenes. (2) Four alkaline basalts, recovered from the mafic and ultramafic acoustic basement, are nepheline normative and show high TiO2 content, high amounts of Cr, Ni and so on, an LREE enriched pattern and compositions of clinopyroxene phenocryst plotted close to or within the field of alkali basalt pyroxenes. These basalts are comparable to those recognized in the lower part of the Santa Elena complex and are clearly different from the oceanic basalts of the Cocos Plate. The radiometric age of the orogenic basalt seems to be close to 80 Ma. The alkaline basalts are clearly older, even if a discrepancy appears between the results of different analyses because of the secondary effects of alteration.

The basalts recovered from the Costa Rica Rift by drilling at Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 501, 504, and 505 during Legs 68, 69 and 70 of the Glomar Challenger are the most depleted in the most-hygromagmaphile elements (Th, Ta, Nb, and La) of all MORB recovered to date by the Glomar Challenger. The invariant ratios Nb/Ta, Zr/Hf, and Y/Tb show "chondritic values" (expected for Nb/Ta because of the very low concentrations in these elements). Four samples from a single unit are exceptions: they present a flat to slightly enriched, extended Coryell-Masuda plot, and at the same time their La/Ta ratio is 9 (normalized ratio = 1) instead of 19 (normalized ratio = 2), the value for all other samples. Only one of these two values of the La/Ta ratio had been found so far within a single hole, and moreover within large areas of the oceanic crust (several holes or dredges). The present result shows that local heterogeneity of the upper mantle with respect to the La/Ta ratio may exist.

A joint research expedition between the French IFREMER and the German MARUM was conducted in 2011 using the R/V 'Pourquoi pas?' to study gas hydrate distributions in a pockmark field (1141-1199 m below sea surface) at the continental margin of Nigeria. The seafloor drill rig MeBo of MARUM was used to recover sediments as deep as 56.74 m below seafloor. The presence of gas hydrates in specific core sections was deduced from temperature anomalies recorded during continuous records of infrared thermal scanning and anomalies in pore water chloride concentrations. In situ sediment temperature measurements showed elevated geothermal gradients of up to 258 °C/km in the center of the so-called pockmark A which is up to 4.6 times higher than that in the background sediment (72 °C/km). The gas hydrate distribution and thermal regime in the pockmark are largely controlled by the intensity, periodicity and direction of fluid flow. The joint interaction between fluid flow, gas hydrate formation and dissolution, and the thermal regime governs pockmark formation and evolution on the Nigerian continental margin.
