Efficacy of florfenicol and intravenous fluid therapy for treatment of experimental salmonellosis in newborn calves

Efeito da associação de furosemida e fenilbutazona sobre variáveis hidroeletrolíticas de cavalos antes e após a corrida

The objective of this study was to verify the effects of furosemide and phenylbutazone association on fluid and electrolyte balance characteristics of horses before and after a race. Nineteen horses were divided into three groups according to treatment protocols. The first group (five animals - control) was not medicated. A second group (seven animals) was treated with furosemide (1mg/kg, intramuscular up to four hours before the race). A third group (seven animals) received furosemide (1mg/kg) and phenylbutazone (4.4 mg/kg), both intramuscular, up to four hours before race. Blood samples were collected before, immediately after and two hours after a race to evaluate the plasma osmolality and sodium, potassium and chloride concentrations. The use of furosemide and furosemide plus phenylbutazone up to four hours before the race altered (P<0.05) the plasma osmolality but did not change (P>0.05) the sodium, potassium and chloride concentrations. It was not possible to determine an antagonist effect of phenylbutazone on furosemide, based on fluid and electrolyte balance. Due to the high intensity exercise, the increase in plasma osmolality and potassium concentration was attributed to the race effect.

Población folicular y concentraciones plasmáticas de progesterona (P4) en ovejas sometidas a diferentes protocolos de sincronización

Los efectos de la prostaglandina (PGF2α) vs CIDR y eCG (gonadotrofina coriónica equina) en la dinámica de la población folicular y su relación con las concentraciones plasmáticas de P4 fueron investigadas en ovejas cíclicas. Fueron utilizadas 14 hembras ovinas de la raza Bergamascia; el Grupo 1 (Gl) se sometió a dos aplicaciones de PGF2α, y, el Grupo 2 (G2) tratado con CIDR durante 14 días siendo que, en el momento de su retirada, se administraron 500 UI de eCG. La dinámica folicular ovárica fue monitoreada por medio de ecógrafo. Se monitorearon todos los folículos ≥ mm y se gráfico su posición diariamente, observándose el desarrollo individual folicular. Desde el día anterior a la aplicación de la segunda dosis de PGF2α, (Gl) y desde la administración de eCG (G2) hasta el décimo día del ciclo estral se colectaron muestras de sangre para el análisis de P4. Hubo diferencia significativa (P<0,001) en las concentraciones plasmáticas de P4 entre los tratamientos. La sincronización del estro y ovulación utilizando CIDR + 500 UI de eCG, incrementó la cantidad de folículos reclutados, además de aumentar el diámetro máximo y la tasa de crecimiento de los folículos grandes en la primera onda folicular. En consideración a los resultados se puede concluir que la sincronización del estro y de la ovulación en hembras ovinas, utilizando el CIDR y 500 UI de eCG, incrementa la cantidad de folículos reclutados, además de aumentar el diámetro máximo y la tasa de crecimiento de los folículos grandes. La asociación CIDR+500 UI de eCG provoca aumentos significativos en las concentraciones plasmáticas de progesterona (P4) al inicio de la fase luteal en hembras ovinas.

Modelos lineares generalizados mistos na avaliação genética da prenhez precoce na raça Nelore

This study aimed to use the generalized linear models with probit and logit link function to evaluate early pregnancy, and to observe the effects on genetic variability and on sire selection when different ages are adopted in the definition of this trait. Early pregnancy was studied at 15 (EP15), and 21 (EP21) months. The analysis was done in R software. Pearson correlations (PC), between genetic predicted values and percentage of bulls in common considering only 10% of bulls with higher genetic values (TOP 10), between classification by logit and probit models and in each model among EP15 and EP21, were calculated. The heritability for EP15 and EP21 were close between models, except for EP15 using probit link function. PC and TOP10 among models were high. The Akaike and Bayesian criteria reported was similar between models. TOP10, considering the same model, among EP15-EP21 were moderated between EP15-EP21.

Follicular thyroid carcinoma in dogs. Report of cases

The treatment of choice for these cases was surgical removal. In both cases the diagnostic was infiltrative follicular carcinoma of thyroid. The first animal did not present a good recovery after the surgery, and died four hours after the procedure. In the second case, the diagnosis was more precocious and antineoplastic chemotherapy was used after the surgery. At the time of submission of this manuscript, this animal had survived for foully months. Currently, there is a need to define the protocols of chemotherapy to avoid relapse and metastases, in order to increase the life expectancy in dogs with thyroid neoplasm.

Avaliação de colesterol e triglicerídeos séricos em cães saudáveis suplementados com ômega n-3

The analysis of serum cholesterol and triglycerides was performed in 20 healthy mongrel dogs, 10 male and 10 female, before and after supplementation for 30 days with fatty acids of long chain polyunsaturated derived from omega-3 n (497mg docosahexaenoic acid and 780mg eicosapentaenoic acid). The serum cholesterol presented a significant reduction after supplementation in both sexes (271.6 similar to 79.8mg/dL; 236,2 similar to 67,6mg/dL, before and after supplementation respectively). Regarding serum triglycerides, there was a reduction only in females (57.8 similar to 12,1mg/dL; 45.2 similar to 7,8mg/dL, before and after supplementation respectively), with no effect of supplementation in males.

Estrutura, ultraestrutura e morfometria da aorta de paca (Cuniculus paca, Linnaeus, 1766) criada em cativeiro

The aim of this study was to describe the morphology, morphometry and ultrastructure of segments of thoracic and abdominal aorta portions in four male and female paca (Cuniculus paca). Parts of the segments were examined by light microscopy and part by scanning electron microscopy. Thickness measurements of the tunica intima and media complex and tunica adventitia of the aorta were taken. In all animals the thickness values for the tunica intima and media complex of the cranial thoracic aorta were significantly higher (mean: 702.19 mu m) when compared to the values of other aortic segments analyzed (means: 354.18 mu m; 243.55 mu m). The layers of the vessel walls show variations in structure and thickness, presumably due to an adaptation to functionaldemand.

Espinha bífida e mielodisplasia em ruminantes: Relato de caso

Spina bifida with mielodysplasia are described in calf and lamb in this report. Locomotor abnormalities in the pelvic limbs and vertebral malformation were found in both animals, and arthrogryposis was also present in the calf. The mielodysplasia was very similar in these animals, and both were characterized by non separation of ventral and dorsal horns, areas with medular canal duplication and syringomyelia. No cases of spina bifida was previously described in Brazil.

Crescimento pré-natal do corpo e de alguns órgãos de Zebu mestiço coletados em matadouros de São Paulo

A total of 196 fetuses of crossbred Zebu between 106 to 246mm in length collected from a slaughterhouse in São Paulo, Brazil, and divided into groups of 10mm size differences intervals into 15 classes were measured and weighed. Liver, heart and lungs were also removed and weighed. In order to select the method of evaluation of growth several mathematical functions were applied. Among significant equations the monologarithmic function was selected. Furthermore, the fetuses in similar conditions of length and weight were compared with racially pure fetuses.
