Hollandite oxides of the type Bi1.7-xPbxV8O16 have been synthesized. The electrical resistivity studies show that the conductivity improves upon Pb substitution. The feasibility of Li intercalation in the system has been established. Magnetic susceptibility studies on the pure and Li intercalated phases show that except for pure Bi1.7V8O16, all phases exhibit Pauli paramagnetism. No superconductivity is encountered down to 12 K in any of the phases. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

he specific heats of EUNi(5)P(3), an antiferromagnet, and EuNi2P2, a mixed-valence compound, have been measured between 0.4 and 30 K in magnetic fields of, respectively, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 5, and 7 T, and 0 and 7 T. In zero field the specific heat of EuNi5P3 shows a h-like anomaly with a maximum at 8.3 K. With increasing field in the range 0-2.5 T, the maximum shifts to lower temperatures, as expected for an antiferromagnet. In higher fields the antiferromagnetic ordering is destroyed and the magnetic part of the specific heat approaches a Schottky anomaly that is consistent with expectations for the crystal-field/Zeeman levels. In low fields and for temperatures between 1.5 acid 5 K the magnetic contribution to the specific heat is proportional to the temperature, indicating a high density of excited states with an energy dependence that is very unusual for an antiferromagnet. The entropy associated with the magnetic ordering is similar to R In8, confirming that only the Eu2+-with J=7/2, S=7/2, L=0-orders below 30 R. In zero field approximately 20% of the entropy occurs above the Neel temperature, consistent. with the usual amount of short-range order observed in antiferromagnets. The hyperfine magnetic field at the Eu nuclei in EUNi(5)P(3) is 33.3 T, in good agreement with a value calculated from electron-nuclear double resonance measurements. For EuNi2P2 the specific heat is nearly field independent and shows no evidence of magnetic ordering or hyperfine fields. The coefficient of the electron contribution to the specific heat is similar to 100 mJ/mol K-2.

Two topical subjects related with the effect of magnetic field on electrical conduction and the metal-insulator transition are discussed. The first topic is an electronic phase transition in graphite, which is interpreted as a manifestation of a nestingtype instability inherent to a one-dimensional narrow Landau sub-band. The second topic is spin-dependent tranport in III-V based diluted magnetic semiconductors; in particular, a large negative magnetoresistance observed in the vicinity of metal-nonmetal transition.

The physics potential of e(+) e(-) linear colliders is summarized in this report. These machines are planned to operate in the first phase at a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV, before being scaled up to about 1 TeV. In the second phase of the operation, a final energy of about 2 TeV is expected. The machines will allow us to perform precision tests of the heavy particles in the Standard Model, the top quark and the electroweak bosons. They are ideal facilities for exploring the properties of Higgs particles, in particular in the intermediate mass range. New vector bosons and novel matter particles in extended gauge theories can be searched for and studied thoroughly. The machines provide unique opportunities for the discovery of particles in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the spectrum of Higgs particles, the supersymmetric partners of the electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons, and of the matter particles. High precision analyses of their properties and interactions will allow for extrapolations to energy scales close to the Planck scale where gravity becomes significant. In alternative scenarios, i.e. compositeness models, novel matter particles and interactions can be discovered and investigated in the energy range above the existing colliders lip to the TeV scale. Whatever scenario is realized in Nature, the discovery potential of e(+) e(-) linear colliders and the high precision with which the properties of particles and their interactions can be analyzed, define an exciting physics program complementary to hadron machines. Four new neutral copper azido polymers, Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)](n) (1), Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-2)(2)](n) (2), Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-3)(2)](n) (3), and Cu-9(N-3)(18)(L-4)(4)](n) (4) L1-4 are formed in situ by reacting pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde with 22-(methylamino)ethyl]pyridine (mapy, L-1), N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (N,N-dmen, L-2), N,N-diethylethylenediamine (N,N-deen, L-3), and N,N,2,2-tetramethylpropanediamine (N,N,2,2-tmpn, L-4)], have been synthesized by using 0.5 mol equiv of the chelating tridentate ligands with Cu-(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN3. Single-crystal X-ray structures show that the basic unit of these complexes, especially 1-3, contains very similar Cu-4(II) building blocks. The overall structure of 3 is two-dimensional, while the other three complexes are one-dimensional in nature. Complex 1 represents a unique example containing hemiaminal ether arrested by copper(R). Complexes 1 and 2 have a rare bridging azido pathway: both end-on and end-to-end bridging azides between a pair of Cu-II centers. Cryomagnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperature exhibit dominant ferromagnetic behavior in all four complexes. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) have been performed on complexes 1-3 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall ferromagnetic behavior.

Biomedical engineering solutions like surgical simulators need High Performance Computing (HPC) to achieve real-time performance. Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) offer HPC capabilities at low cost and low power consumption. In this work, it is demonstrated that a liver which is discretized by about 2500 finite element nodes, can be graphically simulated in realtime, by making use of a GPU. Present work takes into consideration the time needed for the data transfer from CPU to GPU and back from GPU to CPU. Although behaviour of liver is very complicated, present computer simulation assumes linear elastostatics. One needs to use the commercial software ANSYS to obtain the global stiffness matrix of the liver. Results show that GPUs are useful for the real-time graphical simulation of liver, which in turn is needed in simulators that are used for training surgeons in laparoscopic surgery. Although the computer simulation should involve rendering also, neither rendering, nor the time needed for rendering and displaying the liver on a screen, is considered in the present work. The present work is just a demonstration of a concept; the concept is not really implemented and validated. Future work is to develop software which can accomplish real-time and very realistic graphical simulation of liver, with rendered image of liver on the screen changing in real-time according to the position of the surgical tool tip approximated as the mouse cursor in 3D.

We find that at a mole fraction 0.05 of DMSO (x(DMSO) = 0.05) in aqueous solution, a linear hydrocarbon chain of intermediate length (n = 30-40) adopts the most stable collapsed conformation. In pure water, the same chain exhibits an intermittent oscillation between the collapsed and the extended coiled conformations. Even when the mole fraction of DMSO in the bulk is 0.05, the concentration of the same in the first hydration layer around the hydrocarbon of chain length 30 (n = 30) is as large as 17%. Formation of such hydrophobic environment around the hydrocarbon chain may be viewed as the reason for the collapsed conformation gaining additional stability. We find a second anomalous behavior to emerge near x(DMSO) = 0.15, due to a chain-like aggregation of the methyl groups of DMSO in water that lowers the relative concentration of the DMSO molecules in the hydration layer. We further find that as the concentration of DMSO is gradually increased, it progressively attains the extended coiled structure as the stable conformation. Although Flory-Huggins theory (for binary mixture solvent) fails to predict the anomaly at x(DMSO) = 0.05, it seems to capture the essence of the anomaly at 0.15.

The understanding and control of anisotropy in Fe films grown on cubic systems such as GaAs and MgO has been of interest from the point of view of applications in devices. We report magnetic anisotropy studies on Fe/GaAs(001) and Fe/MgO/GaAs(001) prepared by pulsed laser deposition. In Fe/GaAs(001), magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements revealed a dominant uniaxial anisotropy for Fe thickness less than 20 monolayers (ML) and this was confirmed by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies. Multiple steps in the hysteresis loops were observed for Fe films of thickness 20 and 25 ML. Whereas, in Fe/MgO/GaAs(001), even at 25 ML of Fe, the uniaxial anisotropy remained dominant. The anisotropy constants obtained from FMR spectra have shown that the relative strength of uniaxial anisotropy is higher as compared to the cubic anisotropy constant in the case of Fe/MgO/GaAs(001). We investigate the influence of the ferromagnetic layer on the magnetic and transport properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta in YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO)/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) bilayers. The temperature dependent dc magnetization study reveals the presence of magnetic anisotropy in YBCO/LSMO bilayer as compared to the pure YBCO layer. The ac susceptibility study on YBCO/LSMO bilayers reveals stronger pinning and the temperature dependent critical current is found to be less prone to temperature. Besides, the current (I) dependent electrical transport studies on YBCO/LSMO exhibit a significant reduction in the superconducting T-c with increase in I and it follows I-2/3 dependence in accord with the pair breaking effect. The higher reduction of superconducting T-c in YBCO/LSMO is believed to be due to the enhanced pair-breaking induced by the spin polarized carriers being injected into the superconductor. A mechanism is presented here for the amplification of large-scale nonaxisymmetric magnetic fields as a manifestation of the dynamo effect. We generalize a result on restrictions of dynamo actions due to laminar flow originally derived by Zeldovich, Ruzmaikin, and Sokolov [Magnetic Fields in Astrophysics (Gordon and Breach, New York, 1983)]. We show how a screwlike motion having phi and z components of velocity can help to grow a magnetic field. This model postulates a large-scale flow having phi and z components with radial dependences (helical flow). Shear in the radial field, because of a near-flux-freezing condition, causes amplification of the phi component of the magnetic field. The radial and axial components grow due to the presence of turbulent diffusion. The shear in the large scale flow induces an indefinite growth of magnetic field without the a effect; nevertheless, turbulent diffusion forms an important part in the overall mechanism.

The unsteady laminar incompressible boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting fluid in the stagnation region of two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies with an applied magnetic field has been studied. The boundary layer equations which are parabolic partial differential equations with three independent variables have been reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations by using suitable transformations and then solved numerically using a shooting method. Here, we have obtained new solutions which are solutions of both the boundary layer and Navier-Stokes equations.

Unsteady compressible boundary layer flow in the stagnation region of a sphere with a magnetic field
Resumo:
Abstract: An analysis is performed to study the unsteady compressible laminar boundary layer flow in the forward stagnation-point region of a sphere with a magnetic field applied normal, to the surface. We have considered the case where there is an initial steady state that is perturbed by the step change in the total enthalpy at the wall. The nonlinear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer have been solved numerically using a finite-difference scheme. The numerical results are presented, which show the temporal development of the boundary layer. The magnetic field in the presence of variable electrical conductivity causes an overshoot in the velocity profile. Also, when the total enthalpy at the wall is suddenly increased, there is a change in the direction of transfer of heat in a small interval of time.
