This work revealed that the solid solution compounds of Sr 2-xBaxNb2O7 are promising lead-free materials for high-temperature piezoelectric sensor application. These compounds were confirmed as ferroelectric materials with high Curie points (> 900°C) by their piezoelectric activity after poling, ferroelectric domain switching in their P-E hysteresis loops and thermal depoling behavior. The effect of Ba substitution on the structure and properties of Sr 2-xBaxNb2O7 (x < 1.0) was investigated. The solid solution limit of Sr2-xBaxNb 2O7 was determined by XRD as x < 0.6. The a-, b-, c- axes, and cell volume increase with Ba addition. The textured ceramics of Sr2-xBaxNb2O7 were prepared for the first time. The highest d33 was measured as 3.6 ± 0.1 pC/N for Sr1.8Ba0.2Nb2O7. © 2012 The American Ceramic Society.

A detailed knowledge of the mapping between sequence and structure spaces in populations of RNA molecules is essential to better understand their present-day functional properties, to envisage a plausible early evolution of RNA in a prebiotic chemical environment and to improve the design of in vitro evolution experiments, among others. Analysis of natural RNAs, as well as in vitro and computational studies, show that certain RNA structural motifs are much more abundant than others, pointing out a complex relation between sequence and structure. Within this framework, we have investigated computationally the structural properties of a large pool (10 molecules) of single-stranded, 35 nt-long, random RNA sequences. The secondary structures obtained are ranked and classified into structure families. The number of structures in main families is analytically calculated and compared with the numerical results. This permits a quantification of the fraction of structure space covered by a large pool of sequences. We further show that the number of structural motifs and their frequency is highly unbalanced with respect to the nucleotide composition: simple structures such as stem-loops and hairpins arise from sequences depleted in G, while more complex structures require an enrichment of G. In general, we observe a strong correlation between subfamilies-characterized by a fixed number of paired nucleotides-and nucleotide composition. Our results are compared to the structural repertoire obtained in a second pool where isolated base pairs are prohibited. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We study experimentally the dynamics of quantum-dot (QD) passively mode-locked semiconductor lasers under external optical injection. The lasers demonstrated multiple dynamical states, with bifurcation boundaries that depended upon the sign of detuning variation. The area of the hysteresis loops grew monotonically at small powers of optical injection and saturated at moderate powers. At high injection levels the hysteresis decreased and eventually disappeared.

The controlled export of solutes is crucial for cellular adaptation to hypotonic conditions. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae glycerol export is mediated by Fpslp, a member of the major intrinsic protein (MIP) family ]of channel proteins. Here we describe a short regulatory domain that restricts glycerol transport through Fpslp. This domain is required for retention of cellular glycerol under hypertonic stress and hence acquisition of osmotolerance. It is located in the N-terminal cytoplasmic extension close to the first transmembrane domain. Several residues within that domain and its precise position are critical for channel control while the proximal residues 13-215 of the N-terminal extension are not required. The sequence of the regulatory domain and its position are perfectly conserved in orthologs from other yeast species. The regulatory domain has an amphiphilic character, and structural predictions indicate that it could fold back into the membrane bilayer. Remarkably, this domain has structural similarity to the channel forming loops B and E of Fpslp and other glycerol facilitators. Intragenic second-site suppressor mutations of the sensitivity to high osmolarity conferred by truncation of the regulatory domain caused diminished glycerol transport, confirming that elevated channel activity is the cause of the osmosensitive phenotype.

A theoretical and experimental investigation of the time delay characteristics of fiber Bragg grating-based Sagnac loops (FBGSLs) is presented. Analytic expressions for the phase and time delay of the FBGSL have been derived and excellent agreement is found between their predictions and experimental results for configurations incorporating uniform-period and chirped-period gratings. For symmetrical grating structures, it is found that the FBGSL time delay response is similar to that of the incorporated grating; with asymmetrical gratings, the FBGSL response is quite different. It is shown that wavelength-division-multiplexing filters exhibiting near-zero dispersion characteristics can be implemented using FBGSLs.

Computational and communication complexities call for distributed, robust, and adaptive control. This paper proposes a promising way of bottom-up design of distributed control in which simple controllers are responsible for individual nodes. The overall behavior of the network can be achieved by interconnecting such controlled loops in cascade control for example and by enabling the individual nodes to share information about data with their neighbors without aiming at unattainable global solution. The problem is addressed by employing a fully probabilistic design, which can cope with inherent uncertainties, that can be implemented adaptively and which provide a systematic rich way to information sharing. This paper elaborates the overall solution, applies it to linear-Gaussian case, and provides simulation results.

The calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) is a 37 amino acid neuropeptide. Its receptor is a heterodimeric complex of calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CLR) – a family B G-protein coupled receptor – and a single-pass transmembrane protein, receptoractivity modifying protein 1 (RAMP1). Here, we identify residues, within the N-terminal extracellular domain (ECD) of CLR, potentially involved in ligand binding.Certain residues presumed to be possible sites of contact for the CGRP were picked from the CLR/RAMP1 ECD crystal structure (PDB 3N7S). Residues were mutated to alanine (A) bysite-directed mutagenesis (QuikChangeTM, Stratagene). Mutants were analysed for their ability to stimulate cAMP and cell surface expression as previously described [1]. All mutants showed reduced potency, though to varying degrees as indicated by their pEC50 values. W69A and D70Ashowed significant reduction in cell surface expression. These findings suggest that these residues are important for the interaction of CGRP with its receptor. W69A and D70A, part of the WDG motif of family B GPCRs, are thought to rather play a role in receptor stability [2]. The data is consistent with CGRP binding in agroove between CLR and RAMP1. A new framework to perform routing at the autonomous system (AS) level is proposed here. This mechanism, called chain routing framework (CRF), uses complete orders as its main topological unit. Since complete orders are acyclic digraphs that possess a known topology, it is possible to use these acyclic structures to route consistently packets between a group of ASs. The adoption of complete orders also allows easy identification and avoidance of persistent route oscillations, eliminates the possibility of developing transient loops in paths and provides a structure that facilitates the implementation of traffic engineering. Moreover, by combining CRF with other mechanisms that implement complete orders in time, the authors propose that it is possible to design a new routing protocol, which can be more reliable and stable than the border gateway protocol. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

The influence of low vacuum on quasistatic current-voltage (I–V) dependences and the impact of wet air pulse on dynamic bipolar I-V-loops and unipolar I-V-curves of fungal melanin thin layers have been studied for the first time. The threshold hysteresis voltages of I–V dependences are near to the standard electrode potentials of anodic water decomposition. Short wet air pulse impact leads to sharp increase of the current and appearance of “hump”-like and “knee”-like features of I-V-loops and I-V-curves, respectively. By treatment of I-V-loop allowing for I-V-curve shape the maxima of displacement current are revealed. The peculiarities of I-V-characteristics were modelled by series-parallel RC-circuit with Zener diodes as nonlinear elements. As a reason of appearance of temporal polar media with reversible ferroelectric-like polarization and ionic space charge transfer is considered the water-assisted dissociation of some ionic groups of melanin monomers that significantly influences electrophysical parameters of melanin nanostructures.

The extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathway regulates many cellular functions, including proliferation, differentiation, and transformation. To reliably convert external stimuli into specific cellular responses and to adapt to environmental circumstances, the pathway must be integrated into the overall signalling activity of the cell. Multiple mechanisms have evolved to perform this role. In this review, we will focus on negative feedback mechanisms and examine how they shape ERK1/2 MAPK signalling. We will first discuss the extensive number of negative feedback loops targeting the different components of the ERK1/2 MAPK cascade, specifically the direct posttranslational modification of pathway components by downstream protein kinases and the induction of de novo gene synthesis of specific pathway inhibitors. We will then evaluate how negative feedback modulates the spatiotemporal signalling dynamics of the ERK1/2 pathway regarding signalling amplitude and duration as well as subcellular localisation. Aberrant ERK1/2 activation results in deregulated proliferation and malignant transformation in model systems and is commonly observed in human tumours. Inhibition of the ERK1/2 pathway thus represents an attractive target for the treatment of malignant tumours with increased ERK1/2 activity. We will, therefore, discuss the effect of ERK1/2 MAPK feedback regulation on cancer treatment and how it contributes to reduced clinical efficacy of therapeutic agents and the development of drug resistance.
