Concertation communautaire pour l'aménagement et le développement du quartier Parc Extension à Montréal

Ce document présente le processus de mise en oeuvre du plan d'aménagement du quartier Parc Extension à Montréal auquel j'ai activement participé. Initiée et planifiée en 2000, la démarche sera couronnée en 2003. L'objectif de cette initiative est de procurer aux intervenants publics, communautaires et privés un outil servant de cadre de référence afin de mieux cerner les priorités et enjeux locaux. Nous croyons qu'un tel outil suscitera l'avènement de partenariats intéressants à court, moyen et long termes, au bénéfice des résidents et résidentes du quartier. Dans un premier temps nous soulignons les caractéristiques spécifiques de Parc Extension afin de mieux saisir l'état de la situation locale. Cette compréhension devrait ensuite être facilitée par la présentation du profil des acteurs du milieu. Ces deux sections permettent au lecteur de se familiariser avec la dynamique présente. Dans un deuxième temps, nous présentons la démarche globale de l'élaboration du plan d'aménagement. Nous verrons tout d'abord l'historique et la description du processus, puis quels sont les objectifs poursuivis. Enfin nous pourrons lire le résumé-synthèse du plan, qui demeure temporaire puisqu'il s'agit d'un document de travail à ce jour. Dans la section suivante, nous approfondissons la démonstration des retombées d'un tel plan en prenant le cas de l'habitation. En effet, nous y verrons quel est le portrait de la situation, quelles instances s'activent en la matière, ce qui se fait présentement et ce qui est proposé pour l'avenir. Le thème de l'habitation illustre concrètement la pertinence d'une concertation dans l'identification des priorités. L'expression de cette concertation se traduit par des consensus menant à des actions et projets sur le terrain. Des résultats intéressants sont obtenus. Nous poursuivons alors avec les aspects théoriques. A cette étape, nous abordons la question de l'évaluation ultérieure dans le futur par la proposition d'indicateurs. Ceux-ci permettraient de mieux cerner les résultats et impacts dans quelques armées. Nous analysons également le potentiel de transférabilité de l'expérience envers d'autres milieux. Finalement, sur une note plus personnelle, je décris mes savoirs faire et savoirs être développés au cours de ce projet. Je tente une auto-analyse de mes points forts et à améliorer. Un résumé critique de l'ensemble de l'expérience vient compléter l'essai. En conclusion, nous rappelons les avantages du plan d'aménagement et un bilan des avancées franchies à ce jour.

Post-traumatic Winking Induced by Extension of the Hand: A Case Report of a Novel Synkinesis

Several synkinesis syndromes have been reported in the literature. Synkinesis syndromes are rare and are most commonly congenital or follow post-traumatic reinnervation. We describe a novel synkinesis syndrome that developed several months after cervical spinal cord infarction due to a herniated disc in a 29-year-old woman. When the patient overstretched the extensor muscles of the right hand, the right upper eyelid raised automatically and nasal congestion developed. We hypothesize that aberrant reinnervation of the intermediolateral columns of the spinal cord at level C8–T2 by motor neurons of the extensor muscles of the hand occurred.

The role of games in the development of oral skills in Teaching english as a foreign language to adult learners from An extension course at Universidad del Valle [recurso electr?nico]

This research arose from the notorious need to promote oral production in the adult learners of the English Extension courses at Universidad del Valle in 2014. This qualitative research was carried out in a 60 hour course divided along 15 sessions on Saturdays, and with an adult population between the ages of 22 and 65 years old. Its main objective was to describe the impact of games aimed at promoting oral production in English with a group of adult learners. Data were collected from one demographic survey, video-recordings of classroom events during the implementation of games, students? surveys after each game and a teacher?s journal. The analysis of data showed that games did have an impact in students? performance which was related to a positive atmosphere in the classroom. Students showed progress in terms of fluency, interaction and even pronunciation; however they still showed difficulties with accuracy in their spontaneous utterances. These learners? achievements seemed to have a relation with the class atmosphere during games where students showed high level of involvement, confidence, mutual support and enjoyment.

Assessment of institutional contexts for collective action, and stakeholder receptiveness to integrated research-extension approaches on Lac Ntomba, Lac Maï-Ndombe and the Maringa-Lopori-Wamba watersheds

The WorldFish Center has been collaborating with its partners (AWF and WWF) in the Maringa-Lopori-Wamba (MLW) and the Lac Tele-Lac Ntomba (LTL) Landscapes to develop participatory monitoring systems for aquatic ecosystems. This requires rigorous data collection regarding fishing effort and catch, and the establishment of community partnerships; enabling WorldFish Center researchers to understand and counteract the institutional legacies of previous NGO interventions. In the MLW, fisherfolk livelihoods are severely limited due to their extreme isolation from markets and government services. However, fisherfolk have some experience dealing with natural resource conservation or extraction entities as well as humanitarian agencies. Their history has left them slightly skeptical but reasonably willing to collaborate with incoming NGOs. Around Lac Ntomba, fisherfolk have had more extensive interactions with conservation and humanitarian NGOs, but despite their proximity to the Congo River, they appear to have very limited access to distant markets. As past benefits from NGO activities have been captured by local village elites many fishers are highly skeptical and even antagonistic toward NGOs in general, and see little benefits from collaborating with each other or NGOs. Similarly to the MLW and Lac Ntomba, Lac Maï-Ndombe fisherfolk were disillusioned by past NGO activities. However, in this area levels of fish catch are greater than in the other watersheds, and many fishers make regular trips to major markets in Kinshasa, Kikwit and Tchikapa. Consequently, while there are significant divisions to be addressed in Lac Maï-Ndombe, fisherfolk in general are more interested in exploring options for improving livelihoods. In order to overcome these hurdles, the WorldFish Center has introduced an integrated research-extension approach in its interactions with these communities. The teams conducted demonstrations of technological innovations that could significantly improve on present post-harvest fish processing practices, in particular: a solar fish drying tent and a fish smoking barrel.

Use of inert gas-enriched atmospheres and post-packaging irradiation in shelf-life extension of watercress

Watercress (Nasturtium officinale R. Br.) is a semi-aquatic plant of the Brassicaceae family highly appreciated in the Mediterranean cuisine. It features sharp, peppery and slightly tangy taste and contains health-promoting phytochemicals. Its consumption as a fresh-cut product has increased in recent years, as well as the global market of minimally processed vegetables. This demand is driven by the growing interest in the role of food in promoting the human health and wellbeing and to meet consumer needs for fresh-like and more convenient foods. Due to the reduced shelf-life of this plant, the suitability of inert gas-enriched atmospheres and ionizing irradiation for preserving visual, nutritional and functional quality attributes during cold storage was studied. Watercress samples were gathered in the Northeast region of Portugal, rinsed in tap water and a portion was immediately analyzed (non-stored control). The remaining fresh material was packaged in polyethylene bags under N2- and Ar-enriched atmospheres, conventional atmosphere (air) and vacuum (no atmosphere). Samples under conventional atmosphere were irradiated at 1, 2 and 5 kGy of gamma-rays (predicted doses) in a 60Co experimental chamber. A non-irradiated control followed all the experiment. Then, all packaged samples were stored at 4 ºC for 7 days. The studied quality parameters included the colour that was measured with a Konica Minolta colorimeter, and total soluble solids and pH determined in squeezed juice. The proximate composition (moisture, proteins, fat, ash, carbohydrates and energy) was evaluated using the AOA C procedures. Organic acids, free sugars, fatty acids and tocopherols were analyzed by chromatographic techniques. Samples were also evaluated for its DPPH• scavenging activity, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibition capacity trough the inhibition of the β-carotene bleaching and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBAR S) formation. Differences among treatments were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance (ANO VA) and a linear discriminant analysis (LDA ) was used to evaluate the effects on the overall postharvest quality. After evaluating the effect on the individual quality parameters, the LDA revealed that the Ar-enriched atmosphere and the irradiation at 2 kGy were suitable processing choices for preserving the integrity of the non-stored control samples during cold storage. Thus, these non-thermal treatments were highlighted for shelf-life extension of fresh-cut watercress.
