Experience has shown that development NGOs typically do not succeed in transforming themselves into financially sustainable providers of financial intermediation services. The reasons for this failure are complex (see Dichter 1999). Nonetheless, the role that NGOs play as microfinance providers is important and the contribution they could make to poverty reduction would be greatly enhanced if they adhered to some simple but essential parameters of success.<br />

The effects of pyrrole, anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid (AQSA) and iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) concentrations, reaction time and temperature on the electrical conductivity of polypyrrole (PPy) - coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics were investigated. With an increase in both the AQSA and FeCl3 concentrations, resistivity decreased to a point beyond which higher concentrations led to increased surface resistivity. Erosion of the polymer coating, in dynamic synthesis from continual abrasion, manifested as an exponential increase in the resistance of the coated textile substrate. This was not encountered in static synthesis conditions. Temperature affected the degree of surface and bulk polymerisation. The effect of polymerisation temperature on conductivity was negligible. Conductive polymer coating on textiles through chemical polymerisation enabled a smooth coherent film to encase individual fibres, which did not affect the tactile properties of the host substrate. The optimum FeCl3/pyrrole and AQSA FeCl3/pyrrole molar ratios were found to be 2.22 and 0.40 respectively. <br />

A C&ndash;Mn&ndash;V steel was used to study ultrafine ferrite formation (1&ndash;3 &mu;m) through dynamic strain-induced transformation (DSIT) using hot torsion experiments. A systematic study determined the critical strain for the start of DSIT (C,DSIT), although this may not lead to a fully ultrafine microstructure. Therefore, the strain to produce an ultrafine ferrite (UFF) as final microstructure (C,UFF) during deformation was also determined. In addition, the effect of thermomechanical parameters such as deformation temperature, prior austenite grain size, strain rate and cooling rate on C,DSIT and C,UFF has been evaluated. DSIT ferrite nucleated on prior austenite grain boundaries at an early stage of straining followed by intragranular nucleation at higher strains. The prior austenite grain size affected the distribution of DSIT ferrite nucleation sites at an early stage of transformation and the subsequent coarsening behaviour of the grain boundary and intragranular ferrite grains during post-deformation cooling. Also, C,DSIT and C,UFF increased with an increase in the prior austenite grain size and deformation temperature. The post-deformation cooling had a strong effect not only on C,UFF but also the UFF microstructure (i.e. final ferrite grain size and second phase characteristics).<br />

A major problem for a grid user is the discovery of currently available services. With large number of services, it is beneficial for a user to be able to discover the services that most closely match their requirements. This report shows how to extend some concepts of UDDI such that they are suitable for dynamic parameter based discovery of grid services.<br />

Galvanneal steel is considered to be better for automotive applications than its counterpart, galvanized steel, mainly because of its superior coating and surface properties. Galvanneal steel is produced by hot dipping sheet steel in a bath of molten zinc with small, controlled, levels of aluminium, followed by annealing which creates a Fe-Zn intermetallic layer. This intermetallic layer of the coating improves spot weldability and improves subsequent paint appearance. However, if the microstructure of the coating is not properly controlled and forming parameters are not properly selected, wear of the coating could occur during stamping. Frictional sliding of the sheet between the tool surfaces results in considerable amount of coating loss. An Interstitial Free steel with a Galvanneal coating of nominally 60g/m2 was used for the laboratory experiments. Flat Face Friction (FFF) tests were performed with different forming conditions and lubricants to simulate the frictional sliding in stamping. Glow-Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometry (DG-OES) was used to measure the change in the coating thickness during sliding. Optical microscopy was considered for imaging the surfaces as well as an optical method to compare the changes in the coating thickness during the forming. The change to the Galvanneal coating thickness was found to be a function of forming parameters. <br /><br />

To date it is well known that the quality of farmed trout is affected by diet composition, by feeding regime, by husbandry practices and by rearing conditions and environment. The trout processing industry and the large-scale retail trade, in consideration of the wide variability of trout quality and characteristics, have imposed, or will soon impose, quality criteria for the end product. Moreover, recent food scares and the malpractices of some food producers have increased public requests<br />for traceability. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the main chemical quality and the biometrical characteristics of rainbow trout produced in three different farms in Italy (two intensive farms, located one on mountain and one on plain, and an extensive farm in which fish fed only on naturally available nutrients) and to establish whether farmed trout<br />origins could be differentiated by these parameters. Trout farmed in the intensive mountain farm (IMF) showed the highest crude lipid content in the fillets and the fatty acids of their fillets were characterized by the highest percentage of MUFA. Trout farmed in the intensive plain farm (IPF) were characterized by low dressing percentage, and the lipid of their fillets<br />was rich in n-6 fatty acids. Trout stocked for the last year of their life in the extensive farm (EF) were leaner both in the carcass and in the fillets. The analysis of flavor volatile compounds showed some differences in the bouquet design, particularly differences in the amounts of n-3 and n-6 derivates volatile aldehydes and alcohols. All data significantly different<br />(P&lt;0.05) were subjected to Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and 8 variables were chosen to create two discriminant equations generating a strong prediction model for classification of farmed trout respective to their origins.<br />

The effect of finishing extensive farming period, to reduce fat content and manipulate the fatty acid profile of fish muscle, was evaluated in rainbow trout. Fish were stocked in an artificial lake, in which fish were fed only on naturally available nutrients with no supply of artificial feed, for different lengths of time from 0 to 120 days. No weight loss was noted during the whole finishing period while total length increased from 228&plusmn;7 to 269&plusmn;3 mm and the condition factor decreased from 1.41&plusmn;0.04 to 0.89&plusmn;0.02. The total fat content of the fillets decreased considerably from 4.7&plusmn;0.6% at the beginning to 2.4&plusmn;0.4% and 0.7&plusmn;0.2% after 45 and 120 days respectively. Fillet fatty acid composition was affected by the time of stocking in the extensive farm. In contrast to the reduction in C18:1n-9, C18:2n-6, total monounsaturated fatty acid and total n-6 percent values, an increase in the C20:5n-3, C22:6n-3, total polyunsaturated fatty acid and total n-3 percent values was observed. It was shown that while other finishing strategies for salmonids have some disadvantages, the extensive culture system seems to be a potentially useful tool for increasing the general quality of the end product.<br />

In this work a wide range of roughing (deformation in the austenite recrystallised region) and finishing (deformation in the non-recrystallised region) strains and isothermal holding times were used to clarify the effect of processing parameters on the transformation kinetics and mechanical properties of 0.2C-1.55Mn-1.55Si (wt%) TRIP steel. The results have highlighted the complex relationships between multi-phase microstructure and mechanical properties of TRIP steel. The presence of the triclinic carbides, formed during isothermal holding, deteriorated the mechanical properties of steel studied.<br />

Mineral potential mapping is the process of combining a set of input maps, each representing a distinct geo-scientific variable, to produce a single map which ranks areas according to their potential to host deposits of a particular type. The maps are combined using a mapping function which must be either provided by an expert (knowledge-driven approach), or induced from sample data (data-driven approach). Current data-driven approaches using multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) to represent the mapping function have several inherent problems: they rely heavily on subjective judgment in selecting training data and are highly sensitive to this selection; they do not utilize the contextual information provided by unlabeled data; and, there is no objective interpretation of the values output by the MLP. This paper presents a novel approach which overcomes these three problems.<br />

The effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on the levels of total serum leucocytes, granulocytes including neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils, as well as on monocytes and leucocytes were measured in pigs selected from a clean (minimal disease) herd. Thirty pigs were fed different rates of dietary CLA (0, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 g CLA-55/kg diet) for 8 weeks. Blood samples were collected at the end of the study for assessment of haematological and humoral responses to CLA supplementation. No difference in total white blood cells including the neutrophil, monocyte, and lymphocyte counts was observed among different dietary groups. A dose-dependent reduction (<i>P</i> = 0.02) in eosinophil concentrations suggests that CLA exerts anti-inflammatory activities. A 2-fold increase in the level of basophils was recorded in pigs fed lower levels of CLA (1.25 and 2.5 g CLA/kg diet) but the levels decreased gradually (<i>P</i> = 0.05) and were below the detection limit at the highest rate (10 g/kg) of CLA supplementation. The level of IgG was reduced by over 50% in CLA-fed pigs (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.001), although the response was quadratic in nature (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.001). T-cell population analysis showed that CD4+ cells tended (<i>P</i> = 0.06) to be reduced linearly with increasing inclusion of CLA in the diet. Our results suggest that dietary CLA modulates haematological and humoral responses in a dose-dependent manner.<br />
