Abstract— Audio watermarking is a promising technology for copyright protection of audio data. Built upon the concept of spread spectrum (SS), many SS-based audio watermarking method shave been developed, where a pseudonoise (PN) sequence is usually used to introduce security. A major drawback of the existing SS-based audio watermarking methods is their low embedding capacity. In this paper, we propose a new SS-based audio watermarking method which possesses much higher embedding capacity while ensuring satisfactory imperceptibility and robustness. The high embedding capacity is achieved through a set of mechanisms: embedding multiple watermark bits in one audio segment, reducing host signal interference on watermark extraction, and adaptively adjusting PN sequence amplitude in watermark embedding based on the property of audio segments. The effectiveness of the proposed audio watermarking method is demonstrated by simulation examples.

Recommender systems have been successfully dealing with the problem of information overload. However, most recommendation methods suit to the scenarios where explicit feedback, e.g. ratings, are available, but might not be suitable for the most common scenarios with only implicit feedback. In addition, most existing methods only focus on user and item dimensions and neglect any additional contextual information, such as time and location. In this paper, we propose a graph-based generic recommendation framework, which constructs a Multi-Layer Context Graph (MLCG) from implicit feedback data, and then performs ranking algorithms in MLCG for context-aware recommendation. Specifically, MLCG incorporates a variety of contextual information into a recommendation process and models the interactions between users and items. Moreover, based on MLCG, two novel ranking methods are developed: Context-aware Personalized Random Walk (CPRW) captures user preferences and current situations, and Semantic Path-based Random Walk (SPRW) incorporates semantics of paths in MLCG into random walk model for recommendation. The experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Discovering knowledge from unstructured texts is a central theme in data mining and machine learning. We focus on fast discovery of thematic structures from a corpus. Our approach is based on a versatile probabilistic formulation – the restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) –where the underlying graphical model is an undirected bipartite graph. Inference is efficient document representation can be computed with a single matrix projection, making RBMs suitable for massive text corpora available today. Standard RBMs, however, operate on bag-of-words assumption, ignoring the inherent underlying relational structures among words. This results in less coherent word thematic grouping. We introduce graph-based regularization schemes that exploit the linguistic structures, which in turn can be constructed from either corpus statistics or domain knowledge. We demonstrate that the proposed technique improves the group coherence, facilitates visualization, provides means for estimation of intrinsic dimensionality, reduces overfitting, and possibly leads to better classification accuracy.

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a crucial step in text mining. This paper proposes a new graph-based technique for representing unstructured medical text. The new representation is used to extract discriminative features that are able to enhance the NER performance. To evaluate the usefulness of the proposed graph-based technique, the i2b2 medication challenge data set is used. Specifically, the 'treatment' named entities are extracted for evaluation using six different classifiers. The F-measure results of five classifiers are enhanced, with an average improvement of up to 26% in performance.

In this paper we describe a novel framework for the discovery of the topical content of a data corpus, and the tracking of its complex structural changes across the temporal dimension. In contrast to previous work our model does not impose a prior on the rate at which documents are added to the corpus nor does it adopt the Markovian assumption which overly restricts the type of changes that the model can capture. Our key technical contribution is a framework based on (i) discretization of time into epochs, (ii) epoch-wise topic discovery using a hierarchical Dirichlet process-based model, and (iii) a temporal similarity graph which allows for the modelling of complex topic changes: emergence and disappearance, evolution, splitting and merging. The power of the proposed framework is demonstrated on the medical literature corpus concerned with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - an increasingly important research subject of significant social and healthcare importance. In addition to the collected ASD literature corpus which we made freely available, our contributions also include two free online tools we built as aids to ASD researchers. These can be used for semantically meaningful navigation and searching, as well as knowledge discovery from this large and rapidly growing corpus of literature.

 This thesis investigated the link between ASD traits and relationship development and experience in both adults with ASD and their TD partners, through a series of online questionnaires. Firstly, for a large sample of female and male adults with ASD, we found that poor relationship development outcome was predicted by higher severity of social skills impairment. When males and females were considered separately, we found that higher severity of communication deficits predicted poor relationship development outcome for males only, and higher severity of social skills deficits predicted poor relationship development outcome for females only. We also found that higher severity of circumscribed interests predicted better relationship development outcomes for the whole sample. Next, in a comparison of relationship functioning across three partner groups (TD partners within a TD/TD dyad, ASD partners within an ASD/TD dyad and TD partners within an ASD/TD dyad), findings indicated that TD partners within an ASD/TD dyad had the poorest relationship outcome. Lastly, we investigated actor and partner effects of ASD traits on relationship outcome for a sample of ASD/TD dyads using an APIM. We found minimal evidence to suggest that ASD traits negatively impact relationship outcome of ASD/TD dyads. However, we consistently found that TD partner’s ASD trait severity positively influenced both ASD and TD partner’s relationship outcome, suggesting that mutual understanding between partners is protective against the challenges faced within ASD/TD relationships.

Abstract. Interplanetary scintillation observations of 48 of the 55 Augusto et al. (1998) flat spectrum radio sources were carried out at 111 MHz using the interplanetary scintillation method on the Large Phased Array (LPA) in Russia. Due to the large size of the LPA beam (1◦ × 0.5◦) a careful inspection of all possible confusion sources was made using extant large radio surveys: 37 of the 48 sources are not confused. We were able to estimate the scintillating flux densities of 13 sources, getting upper limits for the remaining 35. Gathering more or improving extant VLBI data on these sources might significantly improve our results. This proof-of-concept project tells us that compact (<1 ) flat spectrum radio sources show strong enough scintillations at 111 MHz to establish/constrain their spectra (low-frequency end). Early psychiatry investigated dreams to understand psychopathologies. Contemporary psychiatry, which neglects dreams, has been criticized for lack of objectivity. In search of quantitative insight into the structure of psychotic speech, we investigated speech graph attributes (SGA) in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder type I, and non-psychotic controls as they reported waking and dream contents. Schizophrenic subjects spoke with reduced connectivity, in tight correlation with negative and cognitive symptoms measured by standard psychometric scales. Bipolar and control subjects were undistinguishable by waking reports, but in dream reports bipolar subjects showed significantly less connectivity. Dream-related SGA outperformed psychometric scores or waking-related data for group sorting. Altogether, the results indicate that online and offline processing, the two most fundamental modes of brain operation, produce nearly opposite effects on recollections: While dreaming exposes differences in the mnemonic records across individuals, waking dampens distinctions. The results also demonstrate the feasibility of the differential diagnosis of psychosis based on the analysis of dream graphs, pointing to a fast, low-cost and language-invariant tool for psychiatric diagnosis and the objective search for biomarkers. The Freudian notion that ‘‘dreams are the royal road to the unconscious’’ is clinically useful, after all.
