Synchrophasors have become an important part of the modern power system and numerous applications have been developed covering wide-area monitoring, protection and control. Most applications demand continuous transmission of synchrophasor data across large geographical areas and require an efficient communication framework. IEEE C37.118-2 evolved as one of the most successful synchrophasor communication standards and is widely adopted. However, it lacks a predefined security mechanism and is highly vulnerable to cyber attacks. This paper analyzes different types of cyber attacks on IEEE C37.118-2 communication system and evaluates their possible impact on any developed synchrophasor application. Further, the paper also recommends an efficent security mechanism that can provide strong protection against cyber attacks. Although, IEEE C37.118-2 has been widely adopted, there is no clear understanding of the requirements and limitations. To this aim, the paper also presents detailed performance evaluation of IEEE C37.118-2 implementations which could help determine required resources and network characteristics before designing any synchrophasor application.

In this paper, we investigate secure device-to-device (D2D) communication in energy harvesting large-scale cognitive cellular networks. The energy constrained D2D transmitter harvests energy from multiantenna equipped power beacons (PBs), and communicates with the corresponding receiver using the spectrum of the primary base stations (BSs). We introduce a power transfer model and an information signal model to enable wireless energy harvesting and secure information transmission. In the power transfer model, three wireless power transfer (WPT) policies are proposed: 1) co-operative power beacons (CPB) power transfer, 2) best power beacon (BPB) power transfer, and 3) nearest power beacon (NPB) power transfer. To characterize the power transfer reliability of the proposed three policies, we derive new expressions for the exact power outage probability. Moreover, the analysis of the power outage probability is extended to the case when PBs are equipped with large antenna arrays. In the information signal model, we present a new comparative framework with two receiver selection schemes: 1) best receiver selection (BRS), where the receiver with the strongest channel is selected; and 2) nearest receiver selection (NRS), where the nearest receiver is selected. To assess the secrecy performance, we derive new analytical expressions for the secrecy outage probability and the secrecy throughput considering the two receiver selection schemes using the proposed WPT policies. We presented Monte carlo simulation results to corroborate our analysis and show: 1) secrecy performance improves with increasing densities of PBs and D2D receivers due to larger multiuser diversity gain; 2) CPB achieves better secrecy performance than BPB and NPB but consumes more power; and 3) BRS achieves better secrecy performance than NRS but demands more instantaneous feedback and overhead. A pivotal conclusion- is reached that with increasing number of antennas at PBs, NPB offers a comparable secrecy performance to that of BPB but with a lower complexity.

The X-parameter based nonlinear modelling tools have been adopted as the foundation for the advanced methodology
of experimental characterisation and design of passive nonlinear devices. Based upon the formalism of the Xparameters,
it provides a unified framework for co-design of antenna beamforming networks, filters, phase shifters and
other passive and active devices of RF front-end, taking into account the effect of their nonlinearities. The equivalent
circuits of the canonical elements are readily incorporated in the models, thus enabling evaluation of PIM effect on the
performance of individual devices and their assemblies. An important advantage of the presented methodology is its
compatibility with the industry-standard established commercial RF circuit simulator Agilent ADS.
The major challenge in practical implementation of the proposed approach is concerned with experimental retrieval of the X-parameters for canonical passive circuit elements. To our best knowledge commercial PIM testers and practical laboratory test instruments are inherently narrowband and do not allow for simultaneous vector measurements at the PIM and harmonic frequencies. Alternatively, existing nonlinear vector analysers (NVNA) support X-parameter measurements in a broad frequency bands with a range of stimuli, but their dynamic range is insufficient for the PIM characterisation in practical circuits. Further opportunities for adaptation of the X-parameters methodology to the PIM
characterisation of passive devices using the existing test instruments are explored.

Both genetic factors and life experiences appear to be important in shaping dogs' responses in a test situation. One potentially highly relevant life experience may be the dog's training history, however few studies have investigated this aspect so far. This paper briefly reviews studies focusing on the effects of training on dogs' performance in cognitive tasks, and presents new, preliminary evidence on trained and untrained pet dogs' performance in an 'unsolvable task'. Thirty-nine adult dogs: 13 trained for search and rescue activities (S&R group), 13 for agility competition (Agility group) and 13 untrained pets (Pet group) were tested. Three 'solvable' trials in which dogs could obtain the food by manipulating a plastic container were followed by an 'unsolvable' trial in which obtaining the food became impossible. The dogs' behaviours towards the apparatus and the people present (owner and researcher) were analysed. Both in the first 'solvable' and in the 'unsolvable' trial the groups were comparable on actions towards the apparatus, however differences emerged in their human-directed gazing behaviour. In fact, results in the 'solvable' trial, showed fewer S&R dogs looking back at a person compared to agility dogs, and the latter alternating their gaze between person and apparatus more frequently than pet dogs. In the unsolvable trial no difference between groups emerged in the latency to look at the person however agility dogs looked longer at the owner than both pet and S&R dogs; whereas S&R dogs exhibited significantly more barking (always occurring concurrently to looking at the person or the apparatus) than both other groups. Furthermore, S&R dogs alternated their gaze between person and apparatus more than untrained pet dogs, with agility dogs falling in between these two groups. Thus overall, it seems that the dogs' human-directed communicative behaviours are significantly influenced by their individual training experiences. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Public health risk communication during emergencies should be rapid and accurate in order to allow the audience to take steps to prevent adverse outcomes. Delays to official communications may cause unnecessary anxiety due to uncertainty or inaccurate information circulating within the at-risk group. Modern electronic communications present opportunities for rapid, targeted public health risk communication. We present a case report of a cluster of invasive meningococcal disease in a primary school in which we used the school's mass short message service (SMS) text message system to inform parents and guardians of pupils about the incident, to tell them that chemoprophylaxis would be offered to all pupils and staff, and to advise them when to attend the school to obtain further information and antibiotics. Following notification to public health on a Saturday, an incident team met on Sunday, sent the SMS messages that afternoon, and administered chemoprophyaxis to 93% of 404 pupils on Monday. The use of mass SMS messages enabled rapid communication from an official source and greatly aided the public health response to the cluster.

INTRODUCTION: A disaster is a serious disruption to the functioning of a community that exceeds its capacity to cope within its own resources. Risk communication in disasters aims to prevent and mitigate harm from disasters, prepare the population before a disaster, disseminate information during disasters and aid subsequent recovery. The aim of this systematic review is to identify, appraise and synthesise the findings of studies of the effects of risk communication interventions during four stages of the disaster cycle.

METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Sociological Abstracts, Web of Science and grey literature sources for randomised trials, cluster randomised trials, controlled and uncontrolled before and after studies, interrupted time series studies and qualitative studies of any method of disaster risk communication to at-risk populations. Outcome criteria were disaster-related knowledge and behaviour, and health outcomes.

RESULTS: Searches yielded 5,224 unique articles, of which 100 were judged to be potentially relevant. Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria, and two additional studies were identified from other searching. The studies evaluated interventions in all four stages of the disaster cycle, included a variety of man-made, natural and infectious disease disasters, and were conducted in many disparate settings. Only one randomised trial and one cluster randomised trial were identified, with less robust designs used in the other studies. Several studies reported improvements in disaster-related knowledge and behaviour.

DISCUSSION: We identified and appraised intervention studies of disaster risk communication and present an overview of the contemporary literature. Most studies used non-randomised designs that make interpretation challenging. We do not make specific recommendations for practice but highlight the need for high-quality randomised trials and appropriately-analysed cluster randomised trials in the field of disaster risk communication where these can be conducted within an appropriate research ethics framework.

A key issue for the social work profession concerns the nature, quality and content of communicative encounters with children and families. This article introduces some findings from a project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) that took place across the United Kingdom between 2013 and 2015, which explored how social workers communicate with children in their everyday practice. The Talking and Listening to Children (TLC) project had three phases: the first was ethnographic, involving observations of social workers in their workplace and during visits; the second used video-stimulated recall with a small number of children and their social workers; and the third developed online materials to support social workers. This paper discusses findings from the first phase. It highlights a diverse picture regarding the context and content of communicative processes; it is argued that attention to contextual issues is as important as focusing on individual practitioners’ behaviours and outlines a model for so doing.

Segundo Palliative Care in European, a dor oncológica, tem uma importância especial porque o cancro é a segunda causa de morte em Portugal e por existir dor moderada a intensa em mais de 90% dos doentes em situação oncológica terminal. O desenvolvimento de um programa estruturado de intervenção de enfermagem que vá de encontro às necessidades do doente oncológico com doença avançada e/ou cuidador, relativamente à gestão da dor, poderá ter um impacto muito significativo no controlo da dor e de outros sintomas. OBJETIVOS Avaliar o efeito de um programa de Intervenção de Enfermagem na capacidade de gestão da dor por parte do doente oncológico com doença avançada e/ou o cuidador em domicílio. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS A implementação do programa tem a duração prevista para 6 semanas. Compreende duas sessões educativas, três telefonemas e uma sessão de avaliação final. O programa foi elaborado, após uma Revisão sistemática de Literatura, com base no programa “ THE PRO-SELF”, nas Orientações Genéricas preconizadas pelo Plano Nacional de Luta Contra a dor e na Intervenção de enfermagem “Controle da Dor” da Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC). RESULTADOS O projeto encontra-se na fase de implementação e avaliação do programa educativo. No início os doentes não apresentam informação relativamente à gestão da dor, no final demonstram capacidade para a monitorização da dor e de outros sintomas e para a gestão da terapêutica, realizando os registos num diário de bordo. A literacia, a situação clínica e a disponibilidade interferem na capacidade de gestão. A proximidade da morte e a alteração do estado de consciência interferem na autonomia e na tomada de decisão. According to Palliative Care in European, oncological pain, has a special importance because the cancer is the second most common cause of death in Portugal and there is moderate to severe pain in more than 90 % of patients in oncological terminal situation. The development of a structured program of nursing intervention that will meet the needs of the oncological patient with advanced disease and/or caregiver at home on pain management, will be able to provide for the management of pain, increasing knowledge for the control of pain while minimizing the associated symptoms that influence the quality of life of the patient and the caregiver's anxiety. PURPOSE/GOAL/AIM To evaluate the effect of an educational program of Nursing Intervention on pain management by the oncological patient with advanced disease and/or caregiver. RESEARCH/PROBLEM What is the effect of a structured program of nursing intervention directed to the patient and/or oncological patient caregiver with advanced disease at home, in the management of pain? METHODOLOGY Almost experimental study, with assessment of the management capacity of the oncological patient pain with advanced disease at home and/or informal caregiver, before and after the intervention of nursing (educational program) and transverse evaluation throughout the study. Population: oncological patients with advanced disease at home, with more than 18 years, and or family caregiver, attending an Oncology Unit – Hospital during the day. RESULTS Made an application in an Oncology service in oncological patients with advanced disease at home, it was found that at the beginning the patients did not present information regarding pain management, at the end demonstrated capacity for monitoring of pain and other symptoms and therapeutic management, performing a logbook records. Neste trabalho apresenta-se um quadro teórico de referência para a avaliação do ensino online, que pretende situar as actividades definidas e desenvolvidas pelos docentes no que respeita às Dimensões da Aprendizagem, da Interacção e da Tecnologia. O referencial teórico que baliza este estudo foi desenvolvido tendo em linha de conta directrizes e orientações nacionais e europeias no que diz respeito ao Ensino Superior (ES), em especial em relação à questão da qualidade do ensino e da integração das tecnologias da informação e da comunicação no currículo. Desta forma, pretendeu-se cumprir um dos objectivos desta investigação, ou seja, contribuir para o desenvolvimento de um quadro conceptual enquadrador do pensamento sobre a avaliação do eLearning no ES e, em particular, das actividades de ensino online. Com base nos pressupostos teóricos definidos, desenvolveram-se dois instrumentos de avaliação que permitem perspectivar as percepções de docentes e de alunos em relação às actividades de ensino desenvolvidas online. No sentido de se definir um público-alvo para testar estes instrumentos, levou-se a cabo um estudo empírico que compreende três fases. A Fase I foi de cariz eminentemente exploratório, uma vez que se inquiriram todos os Estabelecimentos de Ensino Superior (EES) portugueses, com vista a caracterizar o panorama nacional no que releva da utilização de plataformas de eLearning por parte dos EES portugueses, outro objectivo deste trabalho. A Fase II constituiu o momento em que se aplicou pela primeira vez o instrumento de avaliação, apenas dirigido aos docentes, uma vez que universo de respondentes, a considerar-se também os alunos, seria de difícil gestão. Na Fase III seleccionou-se um universo mais reduzido (os quatro cursos de 3.º ciclo ministrados em bLearning em Portugal no ano lectivo de 2009/10), o que permitiu efectivar uma avaliação destes cursos na perspectiva dos docentes e também dos alunos (segundo instrumento de avaliação). Analisados os resultados obtidos nestas três fases, termina-se com a convicção de que se trata de um modelo de avaliação do ensino online passível de ser aplicado ao ES. Isto porque permite não só caracterizar os vários cenários de ensino online através das dimensões de avaliação estabelecidas, como também ter uma percepção bastante clara da forma como as directrizes nacionais e europeias relativas ao ES estão a ser implementadas. Por fim, são feitas propostas para investigação futura, em especial no que se refere à disponibilização online dos instrumentos de avaliação criados e ao desenvolvimento de estudos de investigação-acção que permitam a emergência de eventuais ajustes dos instrumentos e a identificação dos efeitos da sua utilização no aperfeiçoamento das práticas de ensino online.

In this thesis we perform a detailed analysis of the state of polarization (SOP) of light scattering process using a concatenation of ber-coil based polarization controllers (PCs). We propose a polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) emulator, built through the concatenation of bercoil based PCs and polarization-maintaining bers (PMFs), capable of generate accurate rst- and second-order PMD statistics. We analyze the co-propagation of two optical waves inside a highbirefringence ber. The evolution along the ber of the relative SOP between the two signals is modeled by the de nition of the degree of co-polarization parameter. We validate the model for the degree of co-polarization experimentally, exploring the polarization dependence of the four-wave mixing e ect into a ber with high birefringence. We also study the interaction between signal and noise mediated by Kerr e ect in optical bers. A model accurately describing ampli ed spontaneous emission noise in systems with distributed Raman gain is derived. We show that the noise statistics depends on the propagation distance and on the signal power, and that for distances longer than 120 km and signal powers higher than 6 mW it deviates signi catively from the Gaussian distribution. We explore the all-optical polarization control process based on the stimulated Raman scattering e ect. Mapping parameters like the degree of polarization (DOP), we show that the preferred ampli cation of one particular polarization component of the signal allows a polarization pulling over a wavelength range of 60 nm. The e ciency of the process is higher close to the maximum Raman gain wavelength, where the DOP is roughly constant for a wavelength range of 15 nm. Finally, we study the polarization control in quantum key distribution (QKD) systems with polarization encoding. A model for the quantum bit error rate estimation in QKD systems with time-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing based polarization control schemes is derived.

Internet Tra c, Internet Applications, Internet Attacks, Tra c Pro ling, Multi-Scale Analysis abstract Nowadays, the Internet can be seen as an ever-changing platform where new and di erent types of services and applications are constantly emerging. In fact, many of the existing dominant applications, such as social networks, have appeared recently, being rapidly adopted by the user community. All these new applications required the implementation of novel communication protocols that present di erent network requirements, according to the service they deploy. All this diversity and novelty has lead to an increasing need of accurately pro ling Internet users, by mapping their tra c to the originating application, in order to improve many network management tasks such as resources optimization, network performance, service personalization and security. However, accurately mapping tra c to its originating application is a di cult task due to the inherent complexity of existing network protocols and to several restrictions that prevent the analysis of the contents of the generated tra c. In fact, many technologies, such as tra c encryption, are widely deployed to assure and protect the con dentiality and integrity of communications over the Internet. On the other hand, many legal constraints also forbid the analysis of the clients' tra c in order to protect their con dentiality and privacy. Consequently, novel tra c discrimination methodologies are necessary for an accurate tra c classi cation and user pro ling. This thesis proposes several identi cation methodologies for an accurate Internet tra c pro ling while coping with the di erent mentioned restrictions and with the existing encryption techniques. By analyzing the several frequency components present in the captured tra c and inferring the presence of the di erent network and user related events, the proposed approaches are able to create a pro le for each one of the analyzed Internet applications. The use of several probabilistic models will allow the accurate association of the analyzed tra c to the corresponding application. Several enhancements will also be proposed in order to allow the identi cation of hidden illicit patterns and the real-time classi cation of captured tra c. In addition, a new network management paradigm for wired and wireless networks will be proposed. The analysis of the layer 2 tra c metrics and the di erent frequency components that are present in the captured tra c allows an e cient user pro ling in terms of the used web-application. Finally, some usage scenarios for these methodologies will be presented and discussed.

Esta tese apresenta um estudo exploratório sobre sistemas de comunicação por luz visível e as suas aplicações em sistemas de transporte inteligentes como forma a melhorar a segurança nas estradas. Foram desenvolvidos neste trabalho, modelos conceptuais e analíticos adequados à caracterização deste tipo de sistemas. Foi desenvolvido um protótipo de baixo custo, capaz de suportar a disseminação de informação utilizando semáforos. A sua realização carece de um estudo detalhado, nomeadamente: i) foi necessário obter modelos capazes de descrever os padrões de radiação numa área de serviço pré-definida; ii) foi necessário caracterizar o meio de comunicações; iii) foi necessário estudar o comportamento de vários esquemas de modulação de forma a optar pelo mais robusto; finalmente, iv) obter a implementação do sistema baseado em FPGA e componentes discretos. O protótipo implementado foi testado em condições reais. Os resultados alcançados mostram os méritos desta solução, chegando mesmo a encorajar a utilização desta tecnologia em outros cenários de aplicação.

A evolução constante em novas tecnologias que providenciam suporte à forma como os nossos dispositivos se ligam, bem como a forma como utilizamos diferentes capacidades e serviços on-line, criou um conjunto sem precedentes de novos desafios que motivam o desenvolvimento de uma recente área de investigação, denominada de Internet Futura. Nesta nova área de investigação, novos aspectos arquiteturais estão ser desenvolvidos, os quais, através da re-estruturação de componentes nucleares subjacentesa que compõem a Internet, progride-a de uma forma capaz de não são fazer face a estes novos desafios, mas também de a preparar para os desafios de amanhã. Aspectos chave pertencendo a este conjunto de desafios são os ambientes de rede heterogéneos compostos por diferentes tipos de redes de acesso, a cada vez maior mudança do tráfego peer-to-peer (P2P) como o tipo de tráfego mais utilizado na Internet, a orquestração de cenários da Internet das Coisas (IoT) que exploram mecanismos de interação Maquinaa-Maquina (M2M), e a utilização de mechanismos centrados na informação (ICN). Esta tese apresenta uma nova arquitetura capaz de simultaneamente fazer face a estes desafios, evoluindo os procedimentos de conectividade e entidades envolvidas, através da adição de uma camada de middleware, que age como um mecanismo de gestão de controlo avançado. Este mecanismo de gestão de controlo aproxima as entidades de alto nível (tais como serviços, aplicações, entidades de gestão de mobilidade, operações de encaminhamento, etc.) com as componentes das camadas de baixo nível (por exemplo, camadas de ligação, sensores e atuadores), permitindo uma otimização conjunta dos procedimentos de ligação subjacentes. Os resultados obtidos não só sublinham a flexibilidade dos mecanismos que compoem a arquitetura, mas também a sua capacidade de providenciar aumentos de performance quando comparados com outras soluÇÕes de funcionamento especÍfico, enquanto permite um maior leque de cenáios e aplicações.
