Anion-deficient layered perovskite oxides of the formula, ACa2Nb3-xMxO10-x (A = Rb, Cs; M = Al, Fe) for 0 < x less-than-or-equal-to 1.0, possessing tetragonal structures similar to the parent ACa2Nb3O10, have been synthesized. The interlayer A cations in these materials are readily exchanged with protons in aqueous HNO3 to give the protonated derivatives, HCa2Nb3-xMxO10-x; the latter are solid Bronsted acids intercalating a number of organic amines including aniline (pK(a) = 4.63). The distribution of acid sites in the interlayer region of HCa2Nb2MO9 inferred from n-alkylamine intercalation suggests that oxygen vacancies and Nb/M atoms are disordered in the ACa2Nb2MO9 samples prepared at 1100-1200-degrees-C. Annealing a disordered sample of CsCa2Nb2AlO9 for a long time at lower temperatures tends to order the Nb/Al atoms and oxygen vacancies to produce octahedral (NbO6/2)-tetrahedral (AlO4/2)-octahedral (NbO6/2) layer sequence reminiscent of the brownmillerite structure.

Two fragments of pancreatic ribonuclease A, a truncated version of S-peptide (residues 1-15) and S-protein (residues 21-124), combine to give a catalytically active complex. We have substituted the wild-type residue at position 13, methionine (Met), with norleucine (Nle), where the only covalent change is the replacement of the sulfur atom with a methylene group. The thermodynamic parameters associated with the binding of this variant to S-protein, determined by titration calorimetry in the temperature range 10-40 degrees C, are reported and compared to values previously reported [Varadarajan, R., Connelly, P. R., Sturtevant, J. M., & Richards, F. M. (1992) Biochemistry 31, 1421-1426] for other position 13 analogs. The differences in the free energy and enthalpy of binding between the Met and Nle peptides are 0.6 and 7.9 kcal/mol at 25 degrees C, respectively. These differences are slightly larger than, but comparable to, the differences in the values for the Met/Ile and Met/Leu pairs. The structure of the mutant complex was determined to 1.85 Angstrom resolution and refined to an R-factor of 17.4% The structures of mutant and wild-type complexes are practically identical although the Nle side chain has a significantly higher average B-factor than the corresponding Met side chain. In contrast, the B-factors of the atoms of the cage of residues surrounding position 13 are all somewhat lower in the Nle variant than in the Met wild-type. Thus, the large differences in the binding enthalpy appear to reside entirely in the difference in chemical properties or dynamic behavior of the -S- and -CH2- groups and not in differences in the geometry of the side chains or the internal cavity surface. In addition, a novel method of obtaining protein stability data by means of isothermal titration calorimetry is introduced.

Molecular dynamics investigation of model diatomic species confined to the alpha-cages of zeolite NaY is reported. The dependence of self-diffusivity on the bond length of the diatomic species has been investigated. Three different sets of runs have been carried out. In the first set, the two atoms of the diatomic molecule interact with the zeolite atoms with equal strength (example, O-2, the symmetric case). In the second and third sets which correspond to asymmetric cases, the two atoms of the diatomic molecule interact with unequal strengths (example, CO). The result for the symmetric case exhibits a well-defined maximum in self-diffusivity for an intermediate bond length. In contrast to this, the intermediate asymmetry leads to a less pronounced maximum. For the large asymmetric case, the maximum is completely absent. These findings are analyzed by computing a number of related properties. These results provide a direct confirmation at the microscopic level of the suggestion by Derouane that the supermobility observed experimentally by Kemball has its origin in the mutual cancellation of forces. The maximum in diffusivity from molecular dynamics is seen at the value predicted by the levitation effect. Further, these findings suggest a role for symmetry in the existence of a diffusivity maximum as a function of diameter of the diffusant often referred to as the levitation effect. The nature of the required symmetry for the existence of anomalous diffusivity is interaction symmetry which is different from that normally encountered in crystallography.

Experimental charge density distribution in 2-chloro-4-fluorobenzoic acid and 4-fluorobenzamide has been carried out using high resolution X-ray diffraction data collected at 100 K using Hansen-Coppens multipolar formalism of electron density. These compounds display short Cl center dot center dot center dot F and F center dot center dot center dot F interactions, respectively. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical charge densities using theoretical structure factors obtained from periodic quantum calculation at the B3LYP/6-31G** level. The topological features were derived from Bader's ``atoms in molecules'' (AIM) approach. Intermolecular Cl center dot center dot center dot F interaction in 2-chloro-4-fluorobenzoic acid is attractive in nature (type II interaction) while the nature of F center dot center dot center dot F interactions in 4-fluorobenzamide shows indication of a minor decrease in repulsion (type I interaction), though the extent of polarization on the fluorine atom is arguably small.

The three dimensional structure of a 32 residue three disulfide scorpion toxin, BTK-2, from the Indian red scorpion Mesobuthus tamulus has been determined using isotope edited solution NMR methods. Samples for structural and electrophysiological studies were prepared using recombinant DNA methods. Electrophysiological studies show that the peptide is active against hK(v)1.1 channels. The structure of BTK-2 was determined using 373 distance restraints from NOE data, 66 dihedral angle restraints from NOE, chemical shift and scalar coupling data, 6 constraints based on disulfide linkages and 8 constraints based on hydrogen bonds. The root mean square deviation (r.m.s.d) about the averaged co-ordinates of the backbone (N, C-alpha, C') and all heavy atoms are 0.81 +/- 0.23 angstrom and 1.51 +/- 0.29 angstrom respectively. The backbone dihedral angles (phi and psi) for all residues occupy the favorable and allowed regions of the Ramachandran map. The three dimensional structure of BTK-2 is composed of three well defined secondary structural regions that constitute the alpha-beta-beta, structural motif. Comparisons between the structure of BTK-2 and other closely related scorpion toxins pointed towards distinct differences in surface properties that provide insights into the structure-function relationships among this important class of voltage-gated potassium channel inhibiting peptides. Expressions for various second-order derivatives of surface tension with respect to composition at infinite dilution in terms of the interaction parameters of the surface and those of the bulk phases of dilute ternary melts have been presented. A method of deducing the parameters, which consists of repeated differentiation of Butler's equations with subsequent application of the appropriate boundary conditions, has been developed. The present investigation calculates the surface tension and adsorption functions of the Fe-S-O melts at 1873 and 1923 K using the modified form of Butler's equations and the derived values for the surface interaction parameters of the system. The calculated values are found to be in good agreement with those of the experimental data of the system. The present analysis indicates that the energetics of the surface phase are considerably different from those of the bulk phase. The present research investigates a critical compositional range beyond which the surface tension increases with temperature. The observed increase in adsorption of sulfur with consequent desorption of oxygen as a function of temperature above the critical compositional range has been ascribed to the increase of activity ratios of oxygen to sulfur in the surface relative to those in the bulk phase of the system.

The Cu atoms in aquabis(tert-butyl acetoacetato)copper(II),[Cu(C8H13O3)(2)(H2O)], and bis(dipivaloylmethanido)copper(II), [Cu(C11H19O2)(2)], adopt square-pyramidal and planar conformations, respectively, with average Cu--O distances of 1.933 Angstrom in the former (not including the water ligand) and 1.892 Angstrom in the latter. It is interesting to note that the lability of the tert-butyl and methyl groups in both structures, which renders even the location of the terminal C atoms difficult, is reduced at T = 130 K, enabling location of all the protons in the difference Fourier map.

Studies have been carried out to recover copper from vanadiferrous magnetite ores by a novel reaction with lime in the presence of water vapour. The ore, mixed with different proportions of lime, has been roasted in the presence of steam. The roasted product is either directly leached with dilute mineral acids or subjected to magnetic separation and then leached. The effect of various parameters such as amount of lime added, temperature and duration of roasting and time of leaching on the recovery of copper has been investigated. The results indicate that over 90% copper could be recovered under optimum conditions of roasting and leaching.

The crystal structure of tetrakis(cytosine)copper(II) perchlorate dihydrate has been determined. All the hydrogen atoms were obtained from Fourier-difference synthesis. The geometry around. copper is a bicapped octahedron (4 + 2 + 2*). The adjacent cytosine rings are oriented head-to-tail with respect to each other and are roughly at right angles to the co-ordination plane. The exocyclic oxo groups form an interligand, intracomplex hydrogen-bonding network above and below the co-ordination plane with the exocyclic amino groups of alternate cytosine bases. The EPR and electronic spectra are consistent with the retention of the solid-state structure in solution. The steric effect of the C(2)=O group of cytosine is offset by the presence of the intracomplex hydrogen-bonding network. The trend in Ei values of Cu-II-Cu-I couples for 1.4 complexes of cytosine, cytodine, pyridine, 2-methylpyridine and N-methylimidazole suggests that both steric effects and pi-delocalization in imidazole and pyridine ligands and the steric effect of C(2)=O in pyrimidine ligands are important in stabilising Cu-I relative to Cu-II.

A previous B-11 nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of glasses belonging to the B2S3-Li2S-LiI system had allowed the authors to determine the variation of the number of three and four coordinated boron atoms with composition. These results, in addition to the observation that vitreous B2S3 quite easily forms fibres during casting, have led us to propose structural hypotheses for B2S3 based glasses, which are supported by the present Raman spectroscopy study. For vitreous B2S3 the spectra were accounted for on the basis of the various types of BS3/2 triangles proposed by the model. Molecular orbital considerations allowed us to assign the most significant lines for the binary glasses by assuming that BS3/2 triangles (with or without nonbridging sulphur atoms) and BS4 tetrahedra were present. In the ternary system, lithium iodide has been found to interact slightly on the structural entities, altering their vibrational characteristics without fundamentally modifying their nature.

Magnetization measurements below 50 K on ceramic La2?ySryCu1?xNixO4+? (y = 0.1, 0.2; 0less-than-or-equals, slantxless-than-or-equals, slant0.5) show a progressive diminution of superconducting properties with increasing x. The larger suppressive action of Ni in the y=0.1 system than that for y=0.2 is attributed to the hole-compensating effect of Ni3+. The assumption that nickel is in the 3+ state satisfactorily explains: (1) the reduction in hole concentration, (2) a right-shift of the Tc versus y curve with x, and (3) the low magnetic moment carried by Ni atoms, in the La2?ySryCu1?xNixO4+? system.
