Reaction wheel assemblies (RWAs) are momentum exchange devices used in fine pointing control of spacecrafts. Even though the spinning rotor of the reaction wheel is precisely balanced to minimize emitted vibration due to static and dynamic imbalances, precision instrument payloads placed in the neighborhood can always be severely impacted by residual vibration forces emitted by reaction wheel assemblies. The reduction of the vibration level at sensitive payloads can be achieved by placing the RWA on appropriate mountings. A low frequency flexible space platform consisting of folded continuous beams has been designed to serve as a mount for isolating a disturbance source in precision payloads equipped spacecrafts. Analytical and experimental investigations have been carried out to test the usefulness of the low frequency flexible platform as a vibration isolator for RWAs. Measurements and tests have been conducted at varying wheel speeds, to quantify and characterize the amount of isolation obtained from the reaction wheel generated vibration. These tests are further extended to other variants of similar design in order to bring out the best isolation for given disturbance loads. Both time and frequency domain analysis of test data show that the flexible beam platform as a mount for reaction wheels is quite effective and can be used in spacecrafts for passive vibration control. During V(D)J recombination, RAG (recombination-activating gene) complex cleaves DNA based on sequence specificity. Besides its physiological function, RAG has been shown to act as a structure-specific nuclease. Recently, we showed that the presence of cytosine within the single-stranded region of heteroduplex DNA is important when RAGs cleave on DNA structures. In the present study, we report that heteroduplex DNA containing a bubble region can be cleaved efficiently when present along with a recombination signal sequence (RSS) in cis or trans configuration. The sequence of the bubble region influences RAG cleavage at RSS when present in cis. We also find that the kinetics of RAG cleavage differs between RSS and bubble, wherein RSS cleavage reaches maximum efficiency faster than bubble cleavage. In addition, unlike RSS, RAG cleavage at bubbles does not lead to cleavage complex formation. Finally, we show that the ``nonamer binding region,'' which regulates RAG cleavage on RSS, is not important during RAG activity in non-B DNA structures. Therefore, in the current study, we identify the possible mechanism by which RAG cleavage is regulated when it acts as a structure-specific nuclease. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An exact classical theory of the motion of a point dipole in a meson field is given which takes into account the effects of the reaction of the emitted meson field. The meson field is characterized by a constant $\chi =\mu /\hslash $ of the dimensions of a reciprocal length, $\mu $ being the meson mass, and as $\chi \rightarrow $ 0 the theory of this paper goes over continuously into the theory of the preceding paper for the motion of a spinning particle in a Maxwell field. The mass of the particle and the spin angular momentum are arbitrary mechanical constants. The field contributes a small finite addition to the mass, and a negative moment of inertia about an axis perpendicular to the spin axis. A cross-section (formula (88 a)) is given for the scattering of transversely polarized neutral mesons by the rotation of the spin of the neutron or proton which should be valid up to energies of 10$^{9}$ eV. For low energies E it agrees completely with the old quantum cross-section, having a dependence on energy proportional to p$^{4}$/E$^{2}$ (p being the meson momentum). At higher energies it deviates completely from the quantum cross-section, which it supersedes by taking into account the effects of radiation reaction on the rotation of the spin. The cross-section is a maximum at E $\sim $ 3$\cdot $5$\mu $, its value at this point being 3 $\times $ 10$^{-26}$ cm.$^{2}$, after which it decreases rapidly, becoming proportional to E$^{-2}$ at high energies. Thus the quantum theory of the interaction of neutrons with mesons goes wrong for E $\gtrsim $ 3$\mu $. The scattering of longitudinally polarized mesons is due to the translational but not the rotational motion of the dipole and is at least twenty thousand times smaller. With the assumption previously made by the present author that the heavy partilesc may exist in states of any integral charge, and in particular that protons of charge 2e and - e may occur in nature, the above results can be applied to charged mesons. Thus transversely polarised mesons should undergo a very big scattering and consequent absorption at energies near 3$\cdot $5$\mu $. Hence the energy spectrum of transversely polarized mesons should fall off rapidly for energies below about 3$\mu $. Scattering plays a relatively unimportant part in the absorption of longitudinally polarized mesons, and they are therefore much more penetrating. The theory does not lead to Heisenberg explosions and multiple processes.

Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) catalyzed efficient oxidative cross-dehydrogenative-coupling (CDC) method for C-H functionalization of N-aryl tetrahydroisoquinolines has been explored. This user-friendly method of synthesizing alpha-aminophosphonates employs 1.1 equiv of dialkyl-H-phosphonate under aerobic condition. Formation of new C-P bonds from unfunctionalized starting materials under environmentally benign conditions provides an excellent avenue for the synthesis of biologically active alpha-aminophosphonates. Chitosan (CS)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) and modified with sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) mixed-matrix membranes are reported for their application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Polyethersulfone (PES) is sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid and factors affecting the sulfonation reaction, such as time and temperature, are studied. The ion-exchange capacity, degree of sulfonation, sorption, and proton conductivity for the mixed-matrix membranes are investigated. The mixed-matrix membranes are also characterised for their mechanical and thermal properties. The methanol-crossover flux across the mixed-matrix membranes is studied by measuring the mass balance of methanol using the density meter. The methanol cross-over for these membranes is found to be about 33% lower in relation to Nafion-117 membrane. The DMFC employing CS-PVA-SPES mixed-matrix membrane with an optimum content of 25 wt % SPES delivers a peak power-density of 5.5 mW cm-2 at a load current-density of 25 mA cm-2 while operating at 70 degrees C. In the present investigation, commercially pure Al has been joined with 304 stainless steel (SS) by friction stir welding. The assembly finds widespread application in the field of cryogenics, nuclear, structural industries and domestic appliances. Microstructural characterisation was carried out using scanning and transmission electron microscopes. It has been found that diffusion of Fe, Cr and Ni is substantial within Al; however, diffusion of Al within 304SS is limited. Owing to interdiffusion of chemical species across the bondline, discrete islands of Fe3Al intermetallic form within the reaction zone. The rubbing action of tool over the butting edge of 304SS removed fine particles from 304SS, which were embedded in the stirring zone of Al matrix. Subsequently, austenite underwent phase transformation to ferrite due to large strain within this grain. Fracture path mainly moves through stirring zone of Al alloy under tensile loading; however, in some places, presence of Fe3Al compound has been also found.

The enantiospecific total synthesis of silphiperfol-6-ene has been accomplished starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-limonene, employing a rhodium carbenoid insertion into the CH bond of a tertiary methyl group. A substrate dependent competitive insertion of the rhodium carbenoid in the gamma- and beta-CH bonds to form cyclopentanone and cyclobutanones, respectively, has been described. In this Letter, we examine magnetization in double- and zero-quantum reservoirs of an ensemble of spin-1/2 nuclei and describe their role in determining the sensitivity of a class of separated local field NMR experiments based on Hartmann-Hahn cross-polarization. We observe that for the liquid crystal system studied, a large dilute spin-polarization, obtained initially by the use of adiabatic cross-polarization, can enhance the sensitivity of the above experiment. The signal enhancement factors, however, are found to vary and depend on the local dynamics. The experimental results have been utilized to obtain the local order-parameters of the system. An excellent utility of Schmidt reaction of aldehydes to access corresponding nitriles in an instantaneous reaction is demonstrated. The reaction of aldehydes with NaN3 and TfOH furnishes the corresponding nitriles in near quantitative yields and tolerates a variety of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents on the substrates. Formanilides, a common side product in Schmidt reaction, is not observed in this reaction. Besides these advantages, the salient feature of this reaction is that it exhibits a remarkable chemoselectivity, as acid and ketone functionalities are well tolerated under the reaction conditions. The reaction is easily scalable, high yielding, and nearly instantaneous.

High molecular weight polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized by a combined procedure incorporating various synthesis methods. Temperature and open circuit potential of the reaction mixture were collected to monitor the reaction progress. The polymer is characterized by various techniques including gel permeation chromatography, dynamic light scattering, infrared spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential scanning calorimetry for elucidating the molecular architecture obtained by this method. As-synthesized PANI was found to possess high molecular weight, reduced branching, reduced cross-linking, and to predominantly consist of linear polymer chains. This polymer was also found to be more stable in solution form. JV characteristics of as-synthesized PANI films indicate a high current density which is due to increased free pathways and less traps for the charge transport to occur in PANI films. POLYM. ENG.
