The lift force on a spherical nanoparticle near a wall in micro/nanofluidics has not received
sufficient attention so far. In this letter the concentration of 200 nm particles is measured at
0.25–2.0 m to a wall in a microchannel with pressure-driven de-ionized water flow pressure
gradient 0–2000 kPa/m . The measured data show the influence of the lift force on the nanoparticle
concentration distribution. By introducing the Saffman lift force into the Nernst–Planck equation
near a wall, we find that the lift force is dominant at the range of 2

ENGLISH: Logbook records of purse seiners and baitboats fishing for yellowfin and skipjack tunas in the eastern Pacific Ocean were used to prepare charts showing the distribution of catches by one-degree area and quarter of the year for each gear and regulation status, for the years 1975-1978. Changes in geographical distribution of the catch over the four-year period are described. Information on annual catch statistics and fleet composition by country is presented. Se describen los cambios de la distribución geográfica de la captura durante un período de cuatro Se presenta la información, por país, de las estadísticas de captura y de la composición de la flota. The phytoplankton distribution of the Shen Reservoir, Bukuru in the Jos Plateau, Nigeria was monitored at 6 depths. Higher floral abundance occurred within the upper 00-03 meters with highest values at the first 1 meter. Bacillariophyceae and Dinophyceae recorded higher values in March-April with lower values in July and January respectively. Phytoplankton were most abundant in the rainy season. Secchi disc transparency was lowest in the peak of the rainy season (July) due to higher levels of suspended matter resulting from the increased run-off from surrounding farmlands of allochthonous materials as well as higher levels of phytoplankton population arising from the former factor. The low water temperature of December/January 15 degree C plus or minus 2 degree C might have depressed growth among the major groups of plankters but enhanced rapid multiplication of the Chlorophyta, Trachelomonas which showed a bloom at this season

A study was conducted examining the structure of fish marketing in Kwara State and also the conduct of participants within the market structure. The performance of the marketing system was evaluated, highlighting bottlenecks in the system and means of overcoming them

Recently, probability models on rankings have been proposed in the field of estimation of distribution algorithms in order to solve permutation-based combinatorial optimisation problems. Particularly, distance-based ranking models, such as Mallows and Generalized Mallows under the Kendall’s-t distance, have demonstrated their validity when solving this type of problems. Nevertheless, there are still many trends that deserve further study. In this paper, we extend the use of distance-based ranking models in the framework of EDAs by introducing new distance metrics such as Cayley and Ulam. In order to analyse the performance of the Mallows and Generalized Mallows EDAs under the Kendall, Cayley and Ulam distances, we run them on a benchmark of 120 instances from four well known permutation problems. The conducted experiments showed that there is not just one metric that performs the best in all the problems. However, the statistical test pointed out that Mallows-Ulam EDA is the most stable algorithm among the studied proposals.

Abstract: In order to investigate the effects of the grain size distribution and the micro-structure of soils on the mechani- cal characteristics, some static triaxial compression tests were carried out, and then the relationship of stress-strain and the strength behavior of silty sand were compared among undisturbed samples with different grain size distribution, undis- turbed and remolded samples with the same grain size distribution, and reconstituted samples (or called mixed samples) with different grain size distribution. The effects of grain size distribution and structure on the mechanic behavior of silty sands were mainly analyzed. It is shown that the obvious differences of the mechanical characteristics between undis- turbed soils and remolded soils are caused by the differences of soil structures. Although the grain size distribution are different between two soil samples, their mechanical characteristics may be close to each other, or may have obvious differences because of the effects of micro-structure.

Fish farming practices in the Lake Kainji Area of Nigeria are categorized under seven main cultural facilities, namely, earthen ponds/reservoirs, indoor/outdoor concrete tanks, plastic tanks, floating cages/hapas, aquaria, sewage and feral conditions. The presence of Bacteria isolates associated with diseased fish conditions varied significantly (P<0.05) with different cultural facilities. The highest bacteria isolates and bacterial disease incidence, 33% and 46% respectively, was associated with diseased fish in the indoor/outdoor concrete tanks. The least incidence of bacteria isolates (3.5%) and blue bacterial disease (3%) was associated with diseased fish in the aquaria and feral conditions. Nine Gram-negative and two Gram-positive bacteria genera were isolated during this investigation. Pseudomonas spp. (23.6%) and Staphylococcus spp. (14.3%), were the predominant Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria genera in the different cultural facilities, respectively. This paper highlights the relevance of occurrence and distribution of bacteria isolates associated with diseased fish to bacterial fish diseases under different cultural facilities

The Nigeria-German Kainji Lake Fisheries Promotion Project (KLFPP) promoted the distribution of genetically improved cocks to the Kainji Lake (Nigeria) fishing communities aiming to compensate for possible short-term income losses due to the implementation of fisheries management measures restricting the use of the Lake's resources and to provide alternative sources for income generation, especially for the women. Out of 5,075 cocks produced, 4,171 cocks were distributed at subsidized prices mainly to women in 116 fishing villages of Kainji Lake. During an impact survey carried out in 12 villages, 6-24 months after distribution, only 25% of the cocks distributed were seen. However, potential income for each beneficiary from the hybrid offspring was estimated at minimum 1,000 Naira per year

The distribution of Oreochromis niloticus was studied in Opa reservoir (Nigeria) using a graded set of gillnets while the food and feeding habits were studied using a castnet to collect the fish samples. About 90% of the fish specimens were caught near the reservoir bottom while about 69% of the specimens were caught within the inshore area of the reservoir. The species fed mainly on detritus, algae and higher plants. Feeding rhythm in O. niloticus started around 6.00 a.m. and reached a peak by 3.00 p.m. but then declined gradually until 6.00 p.m. These results can be utilized for the proper management of the fish species in the reservoir

Fourteen stations were sampled in the Kenyan waters of Lake Victoria in order to assess distribution and abundance of zooplankton. Seven stations were selected in the Nyanza gulf while the rest were in the open waters of the lake. Zooplanktons samples were collected monthly from November 1998 to January 1999, using a 1.5 m long Nansen type plankton net of 243 mu m mesh size and 50 cm diameter. Representative specimens were dissected and identified to species level

Trawl surveys to assess the stocks of Lake Victoria (Tanzania) for estimates of biomass and yield, together with the establishment of exploitation patterns, are being undertaken under the Lake Victoria Fisheries Research Project. Preliminary surveys to establish the sampling stations and strategy were carried out between October 1997 and February 1998. Three cruises to cover the whole of Tanzanian waters were undertaken with 133 sampling stations. Data on each rates, species composition, and distribution were collected. Three sampling areas were designated: area A, B and C. In each area, almost the same distribution pattern over depth was found. Lates niloticus (L) formed over 90% of the total catch. Most L. niloticus were from 5-40 cm TL. Abundance decreased with depth, few fish were found deeper than 40m and most fish were caught at <20 m deep. Catch rates varied considerably between stations and areas. Area A had the highest catch rates with little variation over the stations. There is an indication of recovery of species diversity compared with the surveys of RV Kiboko(1985 and 1989)
