The application of high intensity laser-produced gamma rays is discussed with regard to picosecond resolution deep-penetration radiography. The spectrum and angular distribution of these gamma rays is measured using an array of thermoluminescent detectors for both an underdense (gas) target and an overdense (solid) target. It is found that the use of an underdense target in a laser plasma accelerator configuration produces a much more intense and directional source. The peak dose is also increased significantly. Radiography is demonstrated in these experiments and the source size is also estimated. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Protons of energies up to 37 MeV have been generated when ultra-intense lasers (up to 10(20) W cm(-2)) interact with hydrogen containing solid targets. These protons can be used to induce nuclear reactions in secondary targets to produce P-emitting nuclei of relevance to the nuclear medicine community, namely C-11 and N-13 via (p, n) and (p, alpha) reactions. Activities of the order of 200 kBq have been measured from a single laser pulse interacting with a thin solid target. The possibility of using ultra-intense lasers to produce commercial amounts of short-lived positron emitting sources for positron emission tomography (PET) is discussed. The possibility of using high-intensity laser-produced plasmas as a source of energetic ions for heavy ion accelerators is addressed. Experiments have shown that neon ions greater than 6 MeV can be produced from gas jet plasmas, and well-collimated proton beams greater than 20 MeV have been produced from high-intensity Laser solid interactions. The proton beams from the back of thin targets appear to be more collimated and reproducible than are high-energy ions generated in the ablated plasma at the front of the target and may be more suitable for ion injection applications. Lead ions have been produced at energies up to 430 MeV.

Nuclear activation has been observed in materials exposed to the ablated plasma generated from high intensity laser-solid interactions (at focused intensities up to 2x10(19) W/cm(2)) and is produced by protons having energies up to 30 MeV. The energy spectrum of the protons is determined from these activation measurements and is found to be consistent with other ion diagnostics. The possible development of this technique for

Resonant transfer and excitation (RTE) is investigated for Fe(q+) ions (q=23, 24, and 25) colliding with H2. For each charge state, cross sections for RTE were obtained from measurements of K x rays, emitted from the doubly excited intermediate state, coincident with single-electron capture by the incident ion. Additionally, for Fe25+ cross sections were obtained from measurements of coincidences between the two K x rays emitted from the intermediate state. These latter measurements Provide information on the lifetimes of intermediate metastable states formed in the RTE process. In all cases, measured cross sections are in good agreement with calculations based on theoretical cross sections for dielectronic recombination (DR). Since RTE closely approximates DR, the results indicate that dielectronic-recombination cross sections involving K-shell excitation can be accurately predicted for highly charged iron ions. The results for Fe25+ show that metastable states are sufficiently short lived to be observable in the RTE (or DR) process for these hydrogenlike ions.
