Predacion de semillas de Amaranthus quitensis H.B.K. en un cultivo de soja: influencia del sistema de siembra

El objetivo fue evaluar las pérdidas del banco superficial de semillas de Amaranthus quitensis H.B.K. (yuyo colorado) debidas a la predación por insectos en un cultivo de soja y en el barbecho posterior, en dos sistemas de laboreo. Los experimentos se realizaron durante las campañas 94/95 y 95/96. Para calcular la tasa de predación se emplearon bandejas cubiertas con tejido para evitar el ingreso de roedores y con tela de tul en los tratamientos testigos; en cada una se sembraron 100 semillas de la maleza y cada 15 días se registró el número de semillas remanentes. Para determinar los insectos presentes y su abundancia se emplearon trampas "pitfall". Entre los insectos capturados se encontró el carábido Notiobia cupripennis, su mayor abundancia se registró en marzo (4,5 y 5,8 insectos/trampa en convencional y 2,7 y 3,3 insectos/trampa en siembra directa), coincidiendo con las tasas de predación más altas (5,6% y 8% en convencional y 2,7% y 3,8% en siembra directa); tanto en abundancia como en predación se observaron diferencias significativas entre ambos sistemas. A partir de este mes, las diferencias no fueron significativas, el número de insectos y la tasa de predación disminuyeron. En ambos años existió una correlación positiva entre estas variables.

Immunization of BALB/c mice with Helicobacter urease B induces a T helper 2 response absent in Helicobacter infection.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Infection with Helicobacter induces a T helper type 1 response in mice and humans. Mice can be cured or protected from infection with Helicobacter by mucosal immunization with recombinant H. pylori urease B subunit (rUreB). This study characterizes the immune response of infected mice immunized with rUreB. METHODS: BALB/c mice were infected with H. felis. Two weeks later, they were orally immunized four times with rUreB and cholera toxin (CT) at weekly intervals. Controls were only infected or sham-immunized with CT. Animals were killed at various times after immunization. Splenic CD4(+) cells were obtained and cultured in vitro with rUreB to evaluate antigen-specific proliferation and induction of interferon gamma and interleukin 4 secretion. RESULTS: All rUreB-immunized mice (n = 8) were cured from infection 3 weeks after the fourth immunization. Immunization induced a proliferative response of splenic CD4(+) cells, a progressive decrease in interferon gamma secretion, and a concomitant increase in interleukin 4 secretion after each immunization. A simultaneous increase in rUreB specific serum immunoglobulin G1 levels was observed in infected/immunized mice. CONCLUSIONS: In BALB/c mice, therapeutic mucosal immunization with rUreB induces progressively a Th2 CD4(+) T cell response resulting in the elimination of the pathogen.

Liver, gastrointestinal and cardiac toxicity in intermediate hepatocellular carcinoma treated with PRECISION TACE with drug-eluting beads: Results from the PRECISION V randomized trial : B-240

Purpose: To evaluate the toxicity focussing on hepatic, gastrointestinal and cardiac parameters following PRECISION TACE with DC Bead? versus conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE) in the treatment of intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods and Materials: This prospective, randomized, multicentre study was conducted under best practice trial management and authorized by local institutional review boards. Informed consent was obtained. 212 patients (185 men/27 women; mean: 67 years) were randomized to be treated with DC Beads? or cTACE. The majority of both groups presented in a more advanced stage. Safety was measured by rate of adverse events (South West Oncology Group criteria) and changes in laboratory parameters. Cardiotoxicity was assessed by means of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in MRI or echocardiography. The results of the two groups were compared using the chi-square test and Student`s t-test. Results: Mean maximum alanine transaminase increase in the DC Bead group was 50% in the cTACE group (p < 0.001) and 59% for aspartate transaminase (p < 0.001). For bilirubin, mean increase was 5.30±15.13 vs. 13.53±73.89 µmol/L. Concerning gastrointestinal disorders, 120 adverse events (AEs) occurred in 57/93 (61.3%) patients in the DC Bead group vs. 114 in 49/108 (45.4%) in cTACE. Concerning hepatobiliary disorders, serious AEs occurred in 8/93 (8.6%) vs. 11/108 (10.2%) patients. LVEF showed an increase in the DC Bead group by +2.7±10.1 percentage points and a small decrease by -1.5±7.6 in the cTACE group, p=0.018. Conclusion: PRECISION TACE is safe, even in more advanced HCC patients. Serious liver and cardiac toxicity were significantly lower in the DC Bead group.

Extrafollicular plasmablast B cells play a key role in carrying retroviral infection to peripheral organs.

B cells can either differentiate in germinal centers or in extrafollicular compartments of secondary lymphoid organs. Here we show the migration properties of B cells after differentiation in murine peripheral lymph node infected with mouse mammary tumor virus. Naive B cells become activated, infected, and carry integrated retroviral DNA sequences. After production of a retroviral superantigen, the infected B cells receive cognate T cell help and differentiate along the two main differentiation pathways analogous to classical Ag responses. The extrafollicular differentiation peaks on day 6 of mouse mammary tumor virus infection, and the follicular one becomes detectable after day 10. B cells participating in this immune response carry a retroviral DNA marker that can be detected by using semiquantitative PCR. We determined the migration patterns of B cells having taken part in the T cell-B cell interaction from the draining lymph node to different tissues. Waves of immigration and retention of infected cells in secondary lymphoid organs, mammary gland, salivary gland, skin, lung, and liver were observed correlating with the two peaks of B cell differentiation in the draining lymph node. Other organs revealed immigration of infected cells at later time points. The migration properties were correlated with a strong up-regulation of alpha(4)beta(1) integrin expression. These results show the migration properties of B cells during an immune response and demonstrate that a large proportion of extrafolliculary differentiating plasmablasts can escape local cell death and carry the retroviral infection to peripheral organs.

Strength-Temperature Study of Fly Ash Concrete, MLR-84-6, 1984

Class A, B, and C concrete paving mixes were tested for compressive strength at 40°F and 73°F, both with and without fly ash substitution for 15% of the portland cement. Two Class C ashes and one Class F ash from Iowa approved sources were examined in each mix. The purpose of the study was to provide data on cool weather strength development of concrete paving mixes utilizing Iowa materials. In all cases except one, the fly ash concretes exhibited lower 7 and 28- day compressive strengths at 40°F than control mixes. The continuation of the October 15 cut-off date for the use of fly ash concrete is recommended.
