Carbon isotopically based estimates of CO2 levels have been generated from a record of the photosynthetic fractionation of 13C (epsilon p) in a central equatorial Pacific sediment core that spans the last ~255 ka. Contents of 13C in phytoplanktonic biomass were determined by analysis of C37 alkadienones. These compounds are exclusive products of Prymnesiophyte algae which at present grow most abundantly at depths of 70-90 m in the central equatorial Pacific. A record of the isotopic compostion of dissolved CO2 was constructed from isotopic analyses of the planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, which calcifies at 70-90 m in the same region. Values of epsilon p, derived by comparison of the organic and inorganic delta values, were transformed to yield concentrations of dissolved CO2 (c e) based on a new, site-specific calibration of the relationship between epsilon p and c e. The calibration was based on reassessment of existing epsilon p versus c e data, which support a physiologically based model in which epsilon p is inversely related to c e. Values of PCO2, the partial pressure of CO2 that would be in equilibrium with the estimated concentrations of dissolved CO2, were calculated using Henry's law and the temperature determined from the alkenone-unsaturation index UK 37. Uncertainties in these values arise mainly from uncertainties about the appropriateness (particularly over time) of the site-specific relationship between epsilon p and 1/c e. These are discussed in detail and it is concluded that the observed record of epsilon p most probably reflects significant variations in Delta pCO2, the ocean-atmosphere disequilibrium, which appears to have ranged from ~110 µatm during glacial intervals (ocean > atmosphere) to ~60 µatm during interglacials. Fluxes of CO2 to the atmosphere would thus have been significantly larger during glacial intervals. If this were characteristic of large areas of the equatorial Pacific, then greater glacial sinks for the equatorially evaded CO2 must have existed elsewhere. Statistical analysis of air-sea pCO2 differences and other parameters revealed significant (p < 0.01) inverse correlations of Delta pCO2 with sea surface temperature and with the mass accumulation rate of opal. The former suggests response to the strength of upwelling, the latter may indicate either drawdown of CO2 by siliceous phytoplankton or variation of [CO2]/[Si(OH)4] ratios in upwelling waters.

Interstitial water samples from Leg 129, Sites 800, 801, and 802 in the Pigafetta and Mariana basins (central western Pacific), have been analyzed for major elements, B, Li, Mn, Sr, and 87Sr/86Sr. At all sites waters show enrichment in Ca and Sr and are depleted in Mg, K, Na, SO4, B, alkalinity, and 87Sr compared to seawater. These changes are related to alteration of basaltic material into secondary smectite and zeolite and recrystallization of biogenic carbonate. Water concentration depth profiles are characterized by breaks due to the presence of barriers to diffusion such as chert layers at Sites 800 and 801 and highly cemented volcanic ash at Site 802. In Site 800, below a chert layer, concentration depth profiles are vertical and reflect slight alteration of volcanic matter, either in situ or in the upper basaltic crust. Release of interlayer water from clay minerals is likely to induce observed Cl depletions. At Site 801, two units act as diffusion barrier and isolate the volcaniclastic sediments from ocean and basement. Diagenetic alteration of volcanic matter generates a chemical signature similar to that at Site 800. Just above the basaltic crust, interstitial waters are less evolved and reflect low alteration of the crust, probably because of the presence in the sediments of layers with low diffusivities. At Site 802, in Miocene tuffs, the chemical evolution generated by diagenetic alteration is extreme (Ca = 130 mmol, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7042 at 83 meters below seafloor) and is accompanied by an increase of the Cl content (630 mmol) due to water uptake in secondary hydrous phases. Factors that enhance this evolution are a high sediment accumulation rate, high cementation preventing diffusive exchange and the reactive composition of the sediment (basaltic glass). The chemical variation is estimated to result in the alteration of more than 20% of the volcanic matter in a nearly closed system.

AMS-14C dated sediment cores from the Ob and Yenisei estuaries and the adjacent inner Kara Sea were investigated to determine the siliclastic and organic carbon fluxes and their relationship to paleoenvironmental changes. The variability of sediment fluxes during Holocene times is related to the post-glacial sea-level rise and changes in river discharge and coastal erosion input. Whereas during the late/middle Holocene most of the terrigenous sediments were deposited in the estuaries and the areas directly off the estuaries, huge amounts of sediments accumulated on the Kara Sea shelf farther north during the early Holocene before about 9 Cal. kyrs. BP. The maximum accumulation at that time is related to the lowered sea level, increased coastal erosion, and increased river discharge due to the final stage of mountain deglaciation of the Putoran Massif. Increased supply of Yenisei-derived material indicated by peak magnetic susceptibility values probably occurred in climate-related pulses culminating near 11, 10, and 9 Cal. kyrs. BP. As sea level rose, the main Holocene depocenter migrated southward. Based on hydrogen index values and n-alkanes, the organic matter is predominantly of terrigenous origin. Maximum accumulation rates of 1.5 to more than 6 g/cm**2/y occurred in the early Holocene sediments, suggesting more humid climatic conditions with an increased vegetation cover in the source area at that time. In general, high organic carbon accumulation rates characterize the estuaries and the inner Kara Sea as important sink for terrigenous organic carbon. A high-resolution record of Holocene variability of magnetic susceptibility (MS) in an AMS14C-dated sediment core from the northern Yenisei estuary may indicate natural variability of Arctic climate change and river discharge on a centennial to millenial time scale. Short-term maxima in MS probably related to warmer climate, enhanced precipitation, intensified weathering/erosion and increased river discharge, display a frequency of about 300 to 700 years.

Sannai-Maruyama is one of the most famous and best-researched mid-Holocene (mid-Jomon) archaeological sites in Japan, because of a large community of people for a long period. Archaeological studies have shown that the Jomon people inhabited the Sannai-Maruyama site from 5.9-4.2 +/- 0.1 cal. kyr B.P. However, a continuous record of the terrestrial and marine environments around the site has not been available. Core KT05-7 PC-02, was recovered from Mutsu Bay, only 20 km from the site, for the reconstruction of high-resolution time series of environmental records, including sea surface temperature (SST). C37 alkenone SSTs showed clear fluctuations, with four periods of high (8.4-7.9, 7.0-5.9, 5.1-4.1, and 2.3-1.4 cal. kyr B.P.) and four of low (-8.4, 7.9-7.0, 5.9-5.1, and 4.1-2.3 cal. kyr B.P.) SST. Thus, each SST cycle lasted 1.0-2.0 kyr, and the amplitude of fluctuation was about 1.5-2.0 °C. Total organic carbon (TOC) and C37 alkenone contents, and the TOC/total nitrogen ratio indicate that marine biogenic production was low before 7.0 cal. kyr B.P., but was clearly increased between 5.9 and 4.0 cal. kyr B.P., because of stronger vertical mixing. During the period when the community at the site prospered (between 5.9 and 4.2 +/- 0.1 cal. kyr B.P.), the terrestrial climate was relatively warm. The high relative abundance of pollen of both Castanea and Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis supports the interpretation that the local climate was optimal for human habitation. Between 5.9 and 5.1 cal. kyr B.P., in spite of warm terrestrial climates, the C37 alkenone SST was low; this apparent discrepancy may be attributed to the water column structure in the Tsugaru Strait, which differed from the modern condition. The evidence suggests that at about 5.9 cal. kyr B.P, high productivity of marine resources such as fish and shellfish and a warm terrestrial climate led to the establishment of a human community at the Sannai-Maruyama site. Then, at about 4.1 +/- 0.1 cal. kyr B.P., abrupt marine and terrestrial cooling, indicated by a decrease of about 2 °C in the C37 alkenone SST and an increase in pollen of taxa of cooler climates, led to a reduced terrestrial food supply, causing the people to abandon the site. The timing of the abandonment is consistent with the timing (around 4.0-4.3 cal. kyr B.P.) of the decline of civilizations in north Mesopotamia and along the Yangtze River. These findings suggest that a temperature rise of ~2 °C in this century as a result of global warming could have a great impact on the human community and especially on agriculture, despite the advances of contemporary society.

A combination of changes in the species composition of the radiolarian populations, and in the sediment chemical composition (content and mass accumulation rates of carbonate, organic carbon, and selected major and trace elements, with special attention paid to Ba) is used to reconstruct the variations in upwelling activity over the last 250 kyr in the Socotra gyre area (Somali-Socotra upwelling system, NW Indian Ocean). In the Socotra gyre (Core MD 962073 at 10°N), the variations in upwelling intensity are reconstructed by the upwelling radiolarian index (URI) while the thermocline/surface radiolarian index (TSRI) testifies to productivity variations during non-upwelling intervals. Despite an origin related both to marine and terrigenous inputs, the geochemical records of organic carbon, silica, and trace elements (Ba, P, Cu, and Zn) normalized to Al are controlled by the variations in surface paleoproductivity. The data indicate a continuous increase in upwelling intensity during the last 250 kyr with a maximum activity within the MIS 3, while high productivity periods in between the upwelling seasons occurred both during glacial and interglacial intervals. A comparison of our data with published observations from another gyre of the Somalian upwelling area located at 5°N in the Somali gyre area shows differences regarding periods of upwelling activity and their geochemical imprint. Three hypotheses are proposed to explain these differences: (1) changes in the planktonic community, resulting in more silica-rich deposits in the Socotra gyre, and more carbonate-rich deposits in the Somali gyre, that are controlled by differences in the source water of the upwelling; (2) a more important terrigenous input in the southern gyre; and (3) a different location of the sites relative to the geographic distribution of the upwelling gyres and hydrologic fronts.

A series of excellent upper Miocene through Quaternary diatomaceous sequences recovered at four sites during Leg 127 was examined for diatoms. The diagenetic transition from opal-A to opal-CT is a diachronic horizon from the uppermost part of the Denticulopsis katayamae Zone (8.5 Ma) at Hole 797B to the uppermost part of the Neodenticula kamtschatica Zone (5.73 Ma) at Hole 795A. The diatom zonation of Koizumi (1985) best divides the upper Miocene to Quaternary sequences above the opal-A/opal-CT boundary and also is useful to date carbonate concretions including diatoms below the boundary. Forty diatom datum levels were evaluated biostratigraphically based on the sediment accumulation rate curve, and several isochronous datum levels are newly proposed for the Japan Sea area. A warm-water current did not penetrated into the Japan Sea through the Tsushima strait during the late Miocene and Pliocene time, because subtropical warm-water diatoms are essentially not present in such sediment samples. The occurrences of diatom are cyclic throughout the Quaternary sediments and are affected by eustatic sea level changes.

Because of a close relationship between detrital flux variations and magnetic susceptibility (MS) flux (MS cm**3 of bulk sediment multiplied by the linear sedimentation rate) variations in the southeast Indian basin of the southern ocean, MS flux profiles have been used to examine the spatial and temporal detrital flux changes in this basin during the last climatic cycle. Results indicate a general increase in detrital material input during the coldest periods, suggesting a widespread phenomenon, at least on the basin scale. Mineralogical data, geochemical data, and 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios have been used to determine the origin and transport mechanisms responsible for increased detrital flux during glacial periods. Mineralogical and geochemical data show that these glacial 'highs' are due to increases in both Kerguelen-Crozet volcanic and Antarctic detrital inputs. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic composition of the >45-µm fraction indicates that the Kerguelen-Crozet province contributes to at least 50% of the coarse particule input to the west. This contribution decreases eastward to reach less than 10%. These tracers clearly indicate that the Crozet-Kerguelen province was a major source region of detrital in the western part of the basin during glacial times. In contrast, material of Antarctic origin is well represented in the whole basin (fine and coarse fractions). Because of the minor amount of coarse particles in the sediments, volcanic particles from Kerguelen and crustal particles from Antarctica have most probably been transported by the Antarctic bottom water current and/or the Circumpolar deepwater current during glacial periods as is the case today. Nevertheless, the presence of coarse particles even in low amount suggests also a transport by ice rafting (sea-ice and icebergs), originated from both Kerguelen and Antarctic sources. However, the relative importance of both hydrographic and ice-rafting modes of transport cannot be identified accurately with our data. During low sea level stands (glacial maximum periods), increasing instability and erosion of the continental platform and shallow plateaus could have resulted in a more efficient transfer of crustal and volcano-detrital material to the Southeast Indian basin. At the same time, extension of the grounded ice shelves over the continental margins and increase in the erosion rate of the Antarctic ice sheet could have induced a greater input of ice rafted detritus (IRD) to southern ocean basins. Enhancement of the circumpolar deepwater current strength might have also carried a more important flux of detrital material from Kerguelen. However, an increase in the bottom water flow is not necessarily required.

Holocene and latest Pleistocene oceanographic conditions and the coastal climate of northern California have varied greatly, based upon high-resolution studies (ca. every 100 years) of diatoms, alkenones, pollen, CaCO3%, and total organic carbon at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1019 (41.682°N, 124.930°W, 980 m water depth). Marine climate proxies (alkenone sea surface temperatures [SSTs] and CaCO3%) behaved remarkably like the Greenland Ice Sheet Project (GISP)-2 oxygen isotope record during the Bølling-Allerod, Younger Dryas (YD), and early part of the Holocene. During the YD, alkenone SSTs decreased by >3°C below mean Bølling-Allerod and Holocene SSTs. The early Holocene (ca. 11.6 to 8.2 ka) was a time of generally warm conditions and moderate CaCO3 content (generally >4%). The middle part of the Holocene (ca. 8.2 to 3.2 ka) was marked by alkenone SSTs that were consistently 1-2°C cooler than either the earlier or later parts of the Holocene, by greatly reduced numbers of the gyre-diatom Pseudoeunotia doliolus (<10%), and by a permanent drop in CaCO3% to <3%. Starting at ca. 5.2 ka, coastal redwood and alder began a steady rise, arguing for increasing effective moisture and the development of the north coast temperate rain forest. At ca. 3.2 ka, a permanent ca. 1°C increase in alkenone SST and a threefold increase in P. doliolus signaled a warming of fall and winter SSTs. Intensified (higher amplitude and more frequent) cycles of pine pollen alternating with increased alder and redwood pollen are evidence that rapid changes in effective moisture and seasonal temperature (enhanced El Niño-Southern Oscillation [ENSO] cycles) have characterized the Site 1019 record since about 3.5 ka.

All holes drilled during Leg 114 contained ice-rafted debris. Analysis of samples from Hole 699A, Site 701, and Hole 704A yielded a nearly complete history of ice-rafting episodes. The first influx of ice-rafted debris at Site 699, on the northeastern slope of the Northeast Georgia Rise, occurred at a depth of 69.94 m below seafloor (mbsf) in sediments of early Miocene age (23.54 Ma). This material is of the same type as later ice-rafted debris, but represents only a small percentage of the coarse fraction. Significant ice-rafting episodes occurred during Chron 5. Minor amounts of ice-rafted debris first reached Site 701, on the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (8.78 Ma at 200.92 mbsf), and more arrived in the late Miocene (5.88 Ma). The first significant quantity of sand and gravel appeared at a depth of 107.76 mbsf (4.42 Ma). Site 704, on the southern part of the Meteor Rise, received very little or no ice-rafted debris prior to 2.46 Ma. At this time, however, the greatest influx of ice-rafted debris occurred at this site. This time of maximum ice rafting correlates reasonably well with influxes of ice-rafted debris at Sites 701 (2.24 Ma) and 699 (2.38 Ma), in consideration of sample spacing at these two sites. These peaks of ice rafting may be Sirius till equivalents, if the proposed Pliocene age of Sirius tills can be confirmed. After about 1.67 Ma, the apparent mass-accumulation rate of the sediments at Site 704 declined, but with major fluctuations. This decline may be the result of a decrease in the rate of delivery of detritus from Antarctica due to reduced erosive power of the glaciers or a northward shift in the Polar Front Zone, a change in the path taken by the icebergs, or any combination of these factors.

The European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) focuses on the drilling of two deep ice cores, the first at Dome C and the second at Kohnen station (75°00' S, 0°04' E) in Dronning Maud Land (DML). This paper deals with stable-isotope records from ice cores drilled in DML. In the first season, the deep EPICA DML core reached a depth of 450 m, recovering ice approximately 7000 years old. Generally, the d18O record indicates a stable Holocene climate and shows low variability. However, during the last 4000 years (based on a preliminary time-scale) the d18O values decrease continuously by about 0.6%, and the deuterium excess values increase by about 0.5%. The correlation between d18O and the deuterium excess d is investigated for a 50m long core section and the near-surface snow. High-pass filtered profiles are positively correlated, whereas the correlation between low-pass filtered profiles is negative. A post-depositional effect due to diffusion processes can be seen in a sub-annually resolved profile from snow-pit samples. Changes in the seasonality of the evolution of the snow cover and the consequences for stable-isotope content are demonstrated with data from ice core B31.

Deep-sea benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1143 located in the southern South China Sea (SCS) were investigated to evaluate the relationship between faunal composition patterns and paleoceanographic changes during the last 6 million years (late Miocene to Holocene). We used multivariate statistics (correspondence analysis) to analyze carbon-flux-related changes in assemblage composition of benthic foraminifers. Additional proxies for carbon flux and deep-water ventilation include delta13C records of epifaunal Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi and infaunal Uvigerina peregrina var. dirupta and Melonis pompilioides, benthic foraminiferal accumulation rates (BFARs), diversity indices, and relative abundances of indicator species. We observe three significant benthic faunal changes in the southern South China Sea during the last 6 million years. Strong fluctuations in BFAR and relative abundance of productivity indicator species between glacial and interglacial stages after the mid-Pleistocene revolution (MPR) at approximately 0.9 Ma, indicating stronger seasonal carbon flux fluctuations, are accompanied by the extinction of such species as Stilostomella spp. Increases in carbon flux indicator species are coupled with an overall decrease in benthic foraminifer diversity around 3.0 Ma in the late Pliocene. This may indicate increasing carbon flux in a period of productivity maximum caused by enhanced offshore upwelling from intensified winter monsoon wind strength.

By analogy with the present-day ocean, primary productivity of paleoceans can be reconstructed using calculations based on content of organic carbon in sediments and their accumulation rates. Results of calculations based on published data show that primary productivity of organic carbon, mass of phosphorus involved in the process, and content of phosphorus in ocean waters were relatively stable during Cenozoic and Late Mesozoic. Prior to precipitation on the seafloor together with biogenic detritus, dissolved phosphorus could repeatedly be involved in the biogeochemical cycle. Therefore, only less than 0.1% of phosphorus is retained in bottom sediments. Bulk phosphorus accumulation rate in ocean sediments is partly consistent with calculated primary productivity. Some epochs of phosphate accumulation also coincide with maxima of primary productivity and minima of the fossilization coefficient of organic carbon. The latter fact can testify to episodes of acceleration of organic matter mineralization and release of phosphorus from sediments leading to increase in the phosphorus reserve in paleoceans and phosphate accumulation in some places.

The impact of an asteroid at the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary triggered dramatic biotic, biogeochemical and sedimentological changes in the oceans that have been intensively studied. Paleo-biogeographical differences in the biotic response to the impact and its environmental consequences, however, have been less well documented. We present a high-resolution analysis of benthic foraminiferal assemblages at Southern Ocean ODP Site 690 (Maud Rise, Weddell Sea, Antarctica). At this high latitude site, late Maastrichtian environmental variability was high, but benthic foraminiferal assemblages were not less diverse than at lower latitudes, in contrast to those of planktic calcifiers. Also in contrast to planktic calcifiers, benthic foraminifera did not suffer significant extinction at the K/Pg boundary, but show transient assemblage changes and decreased diversity. At Site 690, the extinction rate was even lower (~3%) than at other sites. The benthic foraminiferal accumulation rate varied little across the K/Pg boundary, indicating that food supply to the sea floor was affected to a lesser extent than at lower latitude sites. Compared to Maastrichtian assemblages, Danian assemblages have a lower diversity and greater relative abundance of heavily calcified taxa such as Stensioeina beccariiformis and Paralabamina lunata. This change in benthic foraminiferal assemblages could reflect post-extinction proliferation of different photosynthesizers (thus food for the benthos) than those dominant during the Late Cretaceous, therefore changes in the nature rather than in the amount of the organic matter supplied to the seafloor. However, severe extinction of pelagic calcifiers caused carbonate supersaturation in the oceans, thus might have given competitive advantage to species with large, heavily calcified tests. This indirect effect of the K/Pg impact thus may have influenced the deep-sea dwellers, documenting the complexity of the effects of major environmental disturbance.
