The eight-year record of mass balance of Peyto Glacier is correlated to meteorological data measured near the glacier and at Lake Louise 30 km to the south. The period investigated includes the llighest and lowest accumulations for the past 40 years. The primar'y controls of net annual balance are seen to be the depth of the 'winter sno,y pack and the temperature record during the summer. Extensive summer snowfalls in the ablation area can slow down melt rates very considerably and affect the net annual balance positively. The variable nature of winter accumulation and its influence on snowline retreat and ice melt is illustrated by three years' data.

Mass transport and mass flux values for the different types of glaciers in the Sør-Rondane are calculated from computer models, based upon gravity data and geodetic stake velocity measurements. The results are interpreted in the light of a general flow line analysis, glacial geological investigations and of the ablation terms of the mass balance for Dronning Maud Land and Antarctica.

The effects of changing ice and atmospheric conditions on the upwelling of deep nutrient-laden waters and biological productivity in the coastal Beaufort Sea were quantified using a unique combination of in situ and remote-sensing approaches. Repeated instances of ice ablation and upwelling during fall 2007 and summer 2008 multiplied the production of ice algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos by 2 to 6 fold. Strong wind forcing failed to induce upward shifts in the biological productivity of stratified waters off the shelf.

We present ice thickness and bed topography maps with a high spatial resolution (250-500 m) of a land-terminating section of the Greenland Ice Sheet derived from ground-based and airborne radar surveys. The data have a total area of ~12 000 km^2 and cover the whole ablation area of the outlet glaciers of Isunnguata Sermia, Russell, Leverett, Ørkendalen and Isorlersuup up to the long-term mass balance equilibrium line altitude at ~1600 m above sea level. The bed topography shows highly variable subglacial trough systems, and the trough of Isunnguata Sermia Glacier is overdeepened and reaches an elevation of ~500 m below sea level. The ice surface is smooth and only reflects the bedrock topography in a subtle way, resulting in a highly variable ice thickness. The southern part of our study area consists of higher bed elevations compared to the northern part. The compiled data sets of ground-based and airborne radar surveys cover one of the most studied regions of the Greenland Ice Sheet and can be valuable for detailed studies of ice sheet dynamics and hydrology.

Based on the investigation of samples recovered during Cruise 25 of the R/V ''Akademik Nikolai Strakhov'', the character of magmatism was determined in the flank parts of the rift zone at the 74°05'N and 73°50'N region, where the direction of the rift valley changes from the north-northwest in the Knipovich Ridge to the northeast-trending structures of the Mohns Ridge. It was shown that the tholeiitic magmas of this region shows all the geochemical characteristics of TOR-2, which is typical of the Mohns Ridge and most oceanic rift zones worldwide, and differ from the basalts of the Knipovich Ridge, which are assigned to a shallower type of tholeiitic magmatism (Na-TOR). The persistent depletion of the magmas in terms of lithophile element contents and radiogenic isotope ratios of Sr, Nd, and Pb reflects the conditions of their formation during the ascent of the depleted oceanic mantle, which has occurred without significant complications since the early stages of the formation of the Mohns Ridge.
