Background: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are used as flame retardants in many products and have been detected in human samples worldwide. Limited data show that concentrations are elevated in young children. Objectives: We investigated the association between PBDEs and age with an emphasis on young children from Australia in 2006–2007. Methods: We collected human blood serum samples (n = 2,420), which we stratified by age and sex and pooled for analysis of PBDEs. Results: The sum of BDE-47, -99, -100, and -153 concentrations (Σ4PBDE) increased from 0–0.5 years (mean ± SD, 14 ± 3.4 ng/g lipid) to peak at 2.6–3 years (51 ± 36 ng/g lipid; p < 0.001) and then decreased until 31–45 years (9.9 ± 1.6 ng/g lipid). We observed no further significant decrease among ages 31–45, 45–60 (p = 0.964), or > 60 years (p = 0.894). The mean Σ4PBDE concentration in cord blood (24 ± 14 ng/g lipid) did not differ significantly from that in adult serum at ages 15–30 (p = 0.198) or 31–45 years (p = 0.140). We found no temporal trend when we compared the present results with Australian PBDE data from 2002–2005. PBDE concentrations were higher in males than in females; however, this difference reached statistical significance only for BDE-153 (p = 0.05). Conclusions: The observed peak concentration at 2.6–3 years of age is later than the period when breast-feeding is typically ceased. This suggests that in addition to the exposure via human milk, young children have higher exposure to these chemicals and/or a lower capacity to eliminate them. What is the responsibility of schools in managing student mental health in the aftermath of global mega-disasters that saturate the media? Here, the focus is on the Asian tsunami but the same question can be asked in relation to other disturbing events, such as September 11, Australian bushfires with local fatalities and the Iraq War.

Recent releases from the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) highlight the importance of ethics education. Academic institutions employ varying methods of teaching ethics and place varying levels of emphasis on ethics teaching during a business/accounting degree. This paper attempts to evaluate whether teaching ethics to final year accountancy students is beneficial. At the commencement of a semester 85 final year accounting students were given five ethical scenarios on which to make an ethical decision. During the semester they were subject to two different methods of teaching ethics, a traditional lecture/tutorial process and a group assignment. ----- After a significant gap, students were re-presented with the ethical scenarios and asked what action they now considered appropriate. In all five instances students offered a more ethical response the second time. When asked to evaluate the methodologies the students considered both training methods to have a positive effect on their ethical thinking. The results suggest it is beneficial to include ethics teaching in accountancy courses, if the profession’s goal of ethical practitioners is to be achieved.

The mixed anion mineral dixenite has been studied by Raman spectroscopy, complimented with infrared spectroscopy. The Raman spectrum of dixenite shows bands at 839 and 813 cm-1 assigned to the (AsO3)3- symmetric and antisymmetric stretching modes. The most intense Raman band of dixenite is the band at 526 cm-1 and is assigned to the ν2 AsO33- bending mode. DFT calculations enabled the position of AsO22- symmetric stretching mode at 839 cm-1, the antisymmetric stretching mode at 813 cm-1, and the deformation mode at 449 cm-1 to be calculated. Raman bands at 1026 and 1057 cm-1 are assigned to the SiO42- symmetric stretching vibrations and at 1349 and 1386 cm-1 to the SiO42- antisymmetric stretching vibrations. Both Raman and infrared spectra indicate the presence of water in the structure of dixenite. This brings into question the commonly accepted formula of dixenite as CuMn2+14Fe3+(AsO3)5(SiO4)2(AsO4)(OH)6. The formula may be better written as CuMn2+14Fe3+(AsO3)5(SiO4)2(AsO4)(OH)6•xH2O.

The case study of Lusoponte illustrates the concession awarded by the Portuguese Government to finance, design, build and operate two bridges over the Tagus in Lisbon, Portugal. It includes an overview of the project's background and an analysis of the main risk categories stating both the actual risks encountered and the mitigation measures adopted. Throughout the project a great attention was given to whole life cycle costs, and gains in efficiency and cost control. Among the lessons that can be learned from both the public and private sector is that a complete risk management analysis must include not only the technical factors but also a realistic assessment of environmental and social risks. These were the risks that were somewhat overseen and that caused the main problems to the project's development.

Introduction. In adults, oral health has been shown to worsen during critical illness as well as influence systemic health. There is a paucity of paediatric critical care research in the area of oral health; hence the purpose of the Critically ill Children’s Oral Health (CCOH) study is to describe the status of oral health of critically ill children over time spent in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The study will also examine the relationship between poor oral health and a variety of patient characteristics and PICU therapies and explore the relationship between dysfunctional oral health and PICU related Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI). Method. An observational study was undertaken at a single tertiary-referral PICU. Oral health was measured using the Oral Assessment Scale (OAS) and culturing oropharyngeal flora. Information was also collected surrounding the use of supportive therapies, clinical characteristics of the children and the occurrence of PICU related HAI. Results. Forty-six participants were consecutively recruited to the CCOH study. Of the participants 63% (n=32) had oral dysfunction while 41% (n=19) demonstrated pathogenic oropharyngeal colonisation during their critical illness. The potential systemic pathogens isolated from the oropharynx and included Candida sp., Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Enterococcus sp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The severity of critical illness had a significant positive relationship (p=0.046) with pathogenic and absent colonisation of the oropharynx. Sixty-three percent of PICU-related HAI involved the preceding or simultaneous colonisation of the oropharynx by the causative pathogen. Conclusion. Given the prevalence of poor oral health during childhood critical illness and the subsequent potential systemic consequences, evidence based oral hygiene practices should be developed and validated to guide clinicians when nursing critically ill children.

The increase of life expectancy worldwide during the last three decades has increased age-related disability leading to the risk of loss of quality of life. How to improve quality of life including physical health and mental health for older people and optimize their life potential has become an important health issue. This study used the Theory of Planned Behaviour Model to examine factors influencing health behaviours, and the relationship with quality of life. A cross-sectional mailed survey of 1300 Australians over 50 years was conducted at the beginning of 2009, with 730 completed questionnaires returned (response rate 63%). Preliminary analysis reveals that physiological changes of old age, especially increasing waist circumference and co morbidity was closely related to health status, especially worse physical health summary score. Physical activity was the least adherent behaviour among the respondents compared to eating healthy food and taking medication regularly as prescribed. Increasing number of older people living alone with co morbidity of disease may be the barriers that influence their attitude and self control toward physical activity. A multidisciplinary and integrated approach including hospital and non hospital care is required to provide appropriate services and facilities toward older people.
