Spherical silica nanoparticles were prepared using a basic amino acid catalysis route and the kinetics of the particles growth was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). L-arginine was used in the polar aqueous phase as the basic catalyst whereas the tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was dissolved in the cyclohexane oil phase as the silicate monomer source. The SAXS measurements were taken in the aqueous phase at different reaction times. A high degree of monodispersity was clearly evidenced for the spherical nanoparticles as a result of the pronounced high-order oscillations observed in the SAXS curves. The SAXS data show that the particles number density remains unchanged since both the particle size as well as the volume fraction gradually increase. This process was discussed based on a reaction-controlled addition of monomer species at the surface of the growing particles. Consequently, the monodispersed spherical nanoparticles radius can as such be finely tuned from 7 to 12 nm by varying the reaction time. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Enhanced frequency upconversion (UC) emission was studied in Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped PbO-GeO2 glass containing silver nanoparticles (NPs). Optical excitation was achieved with a laser operating at 980 nm in resonance with the Yb3+ transition F-4(5/2)-> F-4(7/2). The intensity of the whole UC spectrum from 400 to 700 nm was intensified due to the influence of silver NPs. The green and red emissions were enhanced by more than 300%. Emission bands centered at 408 nm and 480 nm were also detected corresponding to the H-2(9/2)-> I-4(15/2) and F-4(7/2)-> I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ ion. An intensity enhancement of approximate to 150% due to the NPs was measured. For the first time the influence of silver NPs on the blue emission of Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped PbO-GeO2 glass is reported. The large enhancement in the whole UC spectrum is due to the increased local field in the Er3+ ions locations and the proximity between the luminescence wavelengths and the NPs surface plasmon resonance. The influence of the temperature on the nucleation of silver nanoparticles (NPs) in Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped PbO-GeO2 glasses was studied in this work. The infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion (UC) luminescence of Tm3+ ions was used to probe the NPs nucleation and the results were correlated with the increase of the heat-treatment temperature. Emission spectra in the blue-red region were measured by exciting the samples with a cw 980 nm diode laser in resonance with the Yb3+ transition (F-2(7/2) -> F-2(5/2)). The results were correlated with transmission electron microscopy measurements and revealed the different behavior of the nucleation process as a function of temperature. The enhanced UC emission in the visible region is attributed to the increased local field in the proximity of the silver NPs combined with the Yb3+ -> Tm3+ energy transfer. By using the long-wave approximation, a system of coupled evolutions equations for the bulk velocity and the surface perturbations of a Bénard-Marangoni system is obtained. It includes nonlinearity, dispersion and dissipation, and it is interpreted as a dissipative generalization of the usual Boussinesq system of equations. Then, by considering that the Marangoni number is near the critical value M = -12, we show that the modulation of the Boussinesq waves is described by a perturbed Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, and we study the conditions under which a Benjamin-Feir instability could eventually set in. The results give sufficient conditions for stability, but are inconclusive about the existence or not of a Benjamin-Feir instability in the long-wave limit. © 1995.

Strains of Trichoderma pseudokoningii are promising objects for genetic studies and cellulase production. Auxotrophic mutants with deficiencies in the biosynthesis of aminoacids, nucleotides and vitamins (up to five markers) in addition to morphological aspects like conidial colour were obtained from two strains of double auxotrophic mutants using UV radiation. In order to compare the cellulolytic capabilities of the T. pseudokoningii (wild type strain), some of its mutants and T. reesei QM9414 we performed semiquantitative cellulase assays and quantitative determination of the enzymes exoglucanase and endoglucanase. The semiquantitative test showed that the strains with minimal mycelial growth rate were better producers. Both tests revealed that two of the studied mutants, TG3 and TG4 presented a yield higher than the wild type, reaching 30% more exoglucanase and 70% more endoglucanase. These results indicate that the wild type was improved for cellulase production. Highly significant values of correlation were found for exoglucanase and endoglucanase activities, suggesting that these enzymes may be co-regulated in T. pseudokoningii.

The introduction of Coptotermes havilandi in Brazil and some aspects of its biology are reviewed. We also describe an aerial principal nest collected from the 15th floor of a high-rise building and its subsidiary nest collected from the 14th floor of the same building. The population of the principal nest consisted of one imaginal physogastric queen, one imaginal king, 20 nymphoid neotenics (14 females and 6 males), 188 nymphs, many workers, presoldiers, soldiers and larvae. The population of the subsidiary nest consisted of 32 nymphoid neotenics (all females), alates, 2 preneotenics, some larvae and nymphs, many workers, presoldiers and soldiers. These neotenics were larger than those found in the principal nest. No eggs were found in either nest. A morphometric analysis of the nymphs and nymphoids was carried out and the morphology of the neotenics and of the imaginai reproductives is described.

Due to the exclusively maternal inheritance of mitochondria, mitochondrial genotypes can be coupled to a particular nuclear genotype by continuous mating of founder females and their female offspring to males of the desired nuclear genotype. However, backcrossing is a gradual procedure that, apart from being lengthy, cannot ascertain that genetic and epigenetic changes will modify the original nuclear genotype. Animal cloning by nuclear transfer using host ooplasm carrying polymorphic mitochondrial genomes allows, among other biotechnology applications, the coupling of nuclear and mitochondrial genotypes of diverse origin within a single generation. Previous attempts to use Bos taurus oocytes as hosts to transfer nuclei from unrelated species led to the development to the blastocyst stage but none supported gestation to term. Our aim in this study was to determine whether B. taurus oocytes support development of nuclei from the closely related B. indicus cattle and to examine the fate of their mitochondrial genotypes throughout development. We show that indicus:taurus reconstructed oocytes develop to the blastocyst stage and produce live offspring after transfer to surrogate cows. We also demonstrate that, in reconstructed embryos, donor cell-derived mitochondria undergo a stringent genetic drift during early development leading, in most cases, to a reduction or complete elimination of B. indicus mtDNA. These results demonstrate that cross-subspecies animal cloning is a viable approach both for matching diverse nuclear and cytoplasmic genes to create novel breeds of cattle and for rescuing closely related endangered cattle.

The mucosa that covers the residual ridges of edentulous patients may present some distortion or displacement when occlusal loading is applied in complete dentures. This distortion and movement of the denture can result in acceleration of residual ridge resorption and loss of retention and stability. The aim of this study was to analyze the pattern of upper complete denture movement related to underlying mucosa displacement. A sample of 10 complete denture wearers was randomly selected, which had acceptable upper and lower dentures and normal volume and resilience of residual ridges. The kinesiographic instrument K6-I Diagnostic System was used to measure denture movements, according to the method proposed by Maeda et al.7, 1984. Denture movements were measured under the following experimental conditions: (A) 3 maximum voluntary clenching cycles and (B) unilateral chewing for 20 seconds. The results showed that under physiological load, oral mucosa distortion has two distinct phases: a fast initial displacement as load is applied and a slower and incomplete recovery when load is removed. Intermittent loading such as chewing progressively reduces the magnitude of the denture displacement and the recovery of the mucosa is gradually more incomplete.
