A multiproxy record including benthic foraminifera, diatoms and XRF data of a marine sediment core from a SW Greenland fjord provides a detailed reconstruction of the oceanographic and climatic variations of the region during the last 4400 cal. years. The lower part of our record represents the final termination of the Holocene Thermal Maximum. After the onset of the 'Neoglaciation' at approximately 3.2 ka cal. BP, the fjord system was subject to a number of marked hydrographical changes that were closely linked to the general climatic and oceanographic development of the Labrador Sea and the North Atlantic region. Our data show that increased advection of Atlantic water (Irminger Sea Water) from the West Greenland Current into the Labrador Sea was a typical feature of Northeast Atlantic cooling episodes such as the 'Little Ice Age' and the 'European Dark Ages', while the advection of Irminger Sea Water decreased significantly during warm episodes such as the 'Mediaeval Warm Period' and the 'Roman Warm Period'.Whereas the 'Mediaeval Warm Period' was characterized by relatively cool climate as suggested by low meltwater production, the preceding 'Dark Ages' display higher meltwater runoff and consequently warmer climate. When compared with European climate, these regional climate anomalies indicate persisting patterns of advection of colder, respectively warmer air masses in the study region during these periods and thus a long-term seesaw climate pattern between West Greenland and Europe.

Forty indurated sediment samples from Site 516 were studied to determine the cause of acoustic anisotropy in carbonate- bearing deep-sea sediments. Recovered from sub-bottom depths between 388 and 1222 m, the samples have properties exhibiting the following ranges: wet-bulk density, 1.90-2.49 g/cm3; fractional porosity, 0.45-0.14; carbonate content, 33-88%; compressional-wave velocity (at 0.1 kbar pressure), 1.87-4.87 km/s; and anisotropy, 1-13%. Velocities were measured in three mutually perpendicular directions through the same specimen in 29 of the 40 samples studied. Calcite fabric has been estimated by X-ray pole figure goniometry. The major findings of this study are: 1) Carbonate-bearing deep-sea sediments may be regarded as transversely isotropic media with symmetry axes normal to bedding. 2) Calcite c-axes are weakly concentrated in a direction perpendicular to bedding, but the preferred orientation of calcite does not contribute significantly to velocity anisotropy. 3) The properties of bedded and unbedded samples are distinctly different. Unbedded sediments exhibit low degrees of acoustic anisotropy (1-5%). By contrast, bedded samples show higher degrees of anisotropy (to 13%), and anisotropy increases markedly with depth of burial. Thus, bedding must be regarded as the principal cause of acoustic anisotropy in calcareous, deep-sea sediments.

Die Rekonstruktion des Einflusses von Strömungen und glazialmarinen Prozessen auf das Sedimentationsgeschehen am Kontinentalhang der Antarktischen Halbinsel im westlichen Weddellmeer basiert auf sedimentologischen und geophysikalischen Daten eines Kolbenlotkerns. Der Sedimentkern wurde während des Fahrtabschnitts ANT-XIV/3 mit dem FS "Polarstern" aus einer mächtigen Levee-Struktur eines Rinnen-Rückensystems gewonnen. Es wurden sedimentologische sowie sedimentphysikalische Untersuchungen an dem Kernmaterial durchgeführt. Die texturellen Änderungen im Kern und die Variationen der gemessenen Parameter ermöglichen eine lithofazielle Gliederung und stratigraphische Einstufung der Sedimentabfolge. Die untersuchten Sedimente umfassen den Zeitraum der vier letzten Klimazyklen bis heute und repräsentieren die Ablagerungsbedingungen von mehr als 340 000 Jahren. Vier Faziestypen wurden unterschieden, die sowohl glaziale als auch interglaziale Ablagerungsräume charakterisieren. (1) Die überwiegend groblaminierten Sedimentabfolgen wurden der Laminitfazies zugeordnet. Unter glazialen Umweltbedingungen kam es infolge schwacher Bodenströmungen zur Ablagerung feinkörniger, laminierter, strömungsbetonter Sedimente. (2) Strukturlose, sehr homogene Sedimentabfolgen des Kems beschreiben einen weiteren, den Kaltzeiten zugeordneten, Faziestyp, der durch geringe Variationen in den Sedimenteigenschaften charakterisiert ist. (3) Kernabschnitte, die weitgehend strukturlos sind bzw. leichte Bioturbationen und relativ viel eistransportiertes Material aufweisen, wurden als IRD-Fazies bezeichnet. Sie repräsentiert den Übergang vom Glazial zum Interglazial, in dem sich das Schelfeis und die Meereisbeckung zurückzogen. In den Sedimenten kam es infolge der gesteigerten Kalbungsrate zur Anreicherung der Eisfracht. (4) Die relativ biogenreichen, hellen Ablagerungen wurden der interglazialzeitlichen Karbonatfazies zugeteilt. Der signifikant erhöhte Anteil planktischer Foraminiferen weist auf eine gesteigerte Bioproduktivität im Oberflächenwasser hin, die aus verstärkten jahreszeitlichen Schwankungen der Meereisbedeckung resultiert. Die betrachteten Sedimentationsprozesse, wie biologische Produktivität, Umlagerungsprozesse durch Meeresströmungen, gravitativer Sedimenttransport und Eistransport, sind das Abbild komplexer Wechselwirkungen aus Meeresspiegelschwankungen, Änderungen ozeanographischer Bedingungen und der Vereisungsdynamik. Das Sedimentationsgeschehen im Untersuchungsgebiet wurde folglich durch die Variationen der vorherrschenden Umweltbedingungen bestimmt. Im Glazial kam es unter einer geschlossenen Meereisbedeckung zur Ablagerung feinkörniger, geschichteter Sedimente. Vorwiegend Turbiditströmungen kontrollierten das Sedimentationsgeschehen innerhalb des betrachteten Rinnen-Rückensystems. Unter dem Einfluß der Coriolis-Kraft und wahrscheinlich einer Konturströmung wurden die suspendierten, feinkörnigen Partikel aus dem zentralen Bereich der Rinne verdriftet und über dem nördlichen Uferwall abgelagert. Höherenergetische gravitative Prozesse beeinflußten das Sedimentationsgeschehen episodisch und sind durch gut sortierte Ablagerungen mit erhöhten Gehalten im Mittel- bis Grobsiltbereich dokumentiert. Höhere Sedimentationsraten in den Glazialen trugen verstärkt zur Bildung des Uferwalls bei. Die Ablagerungen der ebenfalls glazialzeitlichen homogenen Fazies belegen unterschiedliche Ablagerungsbedingungen und eine Verschiebung der dominierenden Prozesse. Während des Übergangs vom Glazial zum Interglazial nahm die Bodenwasserbildungsrate durch das Aufschwimmen des Schelfeises zu, wodurch die Strömungsintensität gesteigert wurde. Eine verstärkte Eisbergaktivität wird durch die Anreichung des IRD-Materials dokumentiert. Während interglazialer Zeiten ermöglichten offen-marine Bedingungen im Südsommer eine leicht erhöhte biologische Produktivität, so daß der Ablagerungsraum durch die Sedimentation biogener Komponenten verstärkt beeinflußt wurde.

Twenty four core samples from CRP-1, seven from Quaternary strata (20-43.55 meters below sea floor or mbsf) and seventeen from early Miocene strata (43.55 to 147.69 mbsf), have been analysed for their grain-size distribution using standard sieve and Sedigraph techniques. The results are in good agreement with estimates of texture made as part of the visual core description for the 1 :20 core logs for CRP-1 (Cape Roberts Science Team, 1998). Interpretation of the analyses presented here takes into account the likely setting of the site in Quaternary times as it is today, with CRP-1 high on the landward flank of a well-defined submarine ridge rising several hundred metres above basins on either side. In contrast, seismic geometries for strata deposited in early Miocene times indicate a generally planar sea floor dipping gently seaward. Fossils from these strata indicate shallow water depths (< 100 m), indicating the possibility that waves and tidal currents may have influenced sea floor sediments. The sediments analysed here are considered in terms of 3 textural facies: diamict, mud (silt and clay) and sand. Most of the Quaternary section but only 30% of the early Miocene section is diamict, a poorly sorted mixture of sand and mud with scattered clasts, indicating little wave or current influence on its texture. Although not definitive, diamict textures and other features suggest that the sediment originated as basal glacial debris but has been subsequently modified by minor winnowing, consistent with the field interpretation of this facies as ice-proximal and distal glaciomarine sediment. Sediments deposited directly from glacier ice appear to be lacking. Mud facies sediments, which comprise only 10% of the Quaternary section but a third of the early Miocene section, were deposited below wave base and largely from suspension, and show features (described elsewhere in this volume) indicative of the influence of both glacial and sediment gravity flow processes. Sand facies sediments have a considerable proportion of mud, normally more than 20%, but a well-sorted fine-very fine sand fraction. In the context of the early Miocene coastal setting we interpret these sediments as shoreface sands close to wave base.

Oxygen isotope compositions of the interstitial waters have been measured for 21 samples taken from the depth intervals of 1.5 to 398.9 mbsf at Site 798 (Oki Ridge) and 16.5 to 435.6 mbsf at Site 799 (Kita-Yamato Trough) in Japan Sea. The d18O values decrease with depth from -0.49 to -3.38 per mil (SMOW) at Site 798 and from -0.71 to -4.36 per mil (SMOW) at Site 799 corresponding to an average depletion gradient of -0.8 per mil per 100 m. Material balance calculations reveal that the d18O-variations at Sites 798 and 799 were principally controlled by low-temperature alteration of basement basalt and andesite, resulting in negative shifts in pore water d18O values, and by the polymorphic transformations of biogenic opal-A to opal-CT and opal-CT to microquartz, which tend to increase d18O of interstitial waters. Carbonate diagenesis and ash alteration also caused weakly negative shifts in pore water d18O values.

Coccoliths, calcite plates produced by the marine phytoplankton coccolithophores, have previously shown a large array of carbon and oxygen stable isotope fractionations (termed "vital effects"), correlated to cell size and hypothesized to reflect the varying importance of active carbon acquisition strategies. Culture studies show a reduced range of vital effects between large and small coccolithophores under high CO2, consistent with previous observations of a smaller range of interspecific vital effects in Paleocene coccoliths. We present new fossil data examining coccolithophore vital effects over three key Cenozoic intervals reflecting changing climate and atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2). Oxygen and carbon stable isotopes of size-separated coccolith fractions dominated by different species from well preserved Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM, ~56 Ma) samples show reduced interspecific differences within the greenhouse boundary conditions of the PETM. Conversely, isotope data from the Plio-Pleistocene transition (PPT; 3.5-2 Ma) and the last glacial maximum (LGM; ~22 ka) show persistent vital effects of ~2 per mil. PPT and LGM data show a clear positive trend between coccolith (cell) size and isotopic enrichment in coccolith carbonate, as seen in laboratory cultures. On geological timescales, the degree of expression of vital effects in coccoliths appears to be insensitive topCO2 changes over the range ~350 ppm (Pliocene) to ~180 ppm (LGM). The modern array of coccolith vital effects arose after the PETM but before the late Pliocene and may reflect the operation of more diverse carbon acquisition strategies in coccolithophores in response to decreasing Cenozoic pCO2.

At mid- to high-latitude marine sites, ice-rafted debris (IRD) is commonly recognized as anomalously coarse-grained terrigenous material contained within a fine-grained hemipelagic or pelagic matrix (e.g., Conolly and Ewing, 1970; Ruddiman, 1977, doi:10.1130/0016-7606(1977)88<1813:LQDOIS>2.0.CO;2; Krissek, 1989, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.104.114.1989; Jansen et al., 1990; Bond et al., doi:10.1038/360245a0, 1992; Krissek, 1995, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.145.118.1995). The presence of such ice-rafted material is a valuable indicator of the presence of glacial ice at sea level on an adjacent continent, whereas the composition of the IRD can often be used to identify the location of the source area (e.g., Goldschmidt, 1995, doi:10.1016/0025-3227(95)00098-J). Because the amount of core recovered during Leg 163 was very limited, this shore-based, postcruise study focuses on materials recovered at a nearby site during Leg 152. In particular, this study examines sediments recovered at Site 919; these sediments were described as containing a significant ice-rafted component in the Leg 152 Initial Reports volume (Larsen, Saunders, Clift, et al., 1994, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.152.1994). In this study, the sedimentary section from Site 919 has been examined with the goal of providing a detailed history of glaciations on Greenland and other landmasses adjacent to the Norwegian-Greenland Sea; this history ultimately will be calibrated using an oxygen isotope stratigraphy (Flower, 1998, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.152.219.1998), although that calibration has not been completed at this time. Because ice-core studies of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) have shown that the GIS changed dramatically, and in some cases extremely rapidly, during at least the last interglacial stage (GRIP Members, 1993, doi:10.1038/364203a0), a detailed IRD record from the Southeast Greenland margin should provide insight into the longer term behavior of this sensitive component of the Northern Hemisphere climate system.

Determinations of total carbonate content yield additional information, in the context of integrated investigations, thus enabling or enhancing the interpretation and characterisation of the depositional environment, the processes of sedimentation and the diagenesis of sediments. In the case of drillcores, they help us to discern vertical gradations of facies sequences that have repeating patterns or show changes through time. This report presents initial results of carbonate investigations on a total of 32 bulk samples from the Quaternary and Miocene strata of the CRP-1 borehole, which reached a final depth of 147.69 metres below sea floor (mbsf). Fifteen out of a total of 18 lithostratigraphic units in the core were sampled (Tab. 1). Fourteen samples (24.85-43.85 mbsf) belong to the Quaternary, whereas 18 samples (44.53-146.51 mbsf) originate from the Miocene strata. The sampling intervals varied from 1-5 m for the Quaternary, and 1-15 m for the Miocene. All the samples originated from sections of core representing not more than 1 cm thickness.
