Feeding activity, selective grazing and the potential grazing impact of two dominant grazers of the Polar Frontal Zone, Calanus simillimus and Rhincalanus gigas, and of copepods < 2 mm were investigated with incubation experiments in the course of an iron fertilized diatom bloom in November 2000. All grazers were already actively feeding in the low chlorophyll waters prior to the onset of the bloom. C. simillimus maintained constant clearance rates and fed predominantly on diatoms. R. gigas and the small copepods strongly increased clearance and ingestion of diatoms in response to their enhanced availability. All grazers preyed on microzooplankton, most steadily on ciliates, confirming the view that pure herbivory appears to be the exception rather than the rule in copepod feeding. The grazers exhibited differences in feeding behavior based on selectivity indices. C. simillimus and R. gigas showed prey switching from dinoflagellates to diatoms in response to the phytoplankton bloom. All grazers most efficiently grazed on large diatoms leading to differences in daily losses for large and small species, e.g. Corethron sp. or Thalassionema nitzschioides. Species-specific diatom mortality rates due to grazing suggest that the high feeding activity of C. simillimus prior to and during the bloom played a role in shaping diatom population dynamics

A 380 cm long sediment core from Lake Temje (central Yakutia, Eastern Siberia) was studied to infer Holocene palaeoenvironmental change in the extreme periglacial setting of eastern Siberia during the last 10,000 years. Data on sediment composition were used to characterize changes in the depositional environment during the ontogenetic development of the Lake Temje. The analysis of fossil chironomid remains and statistical treatment of chironomid data by the application of a newly developed regional Russian transfer functions provided inferences of mean July air temperatures (T_July) and water depths (WD). Reconstructed WDs show minor changes throughout the core and range between 80 and 120 cm. All the fluctuations in reconstructed water depth lie within the mean error of prediction of the inference model (RMSEP = 0.35) so it is not possible to draw conclusions from the reconstructions. A qualitative and quantitative reconstruction of Holocene climate in central Yakutia recognized three stages of palaeoenvironmental changes. The early Holocene between 10 and 8 ka BP was characterized by colder-than-today and moist summer conditions. Cryotextures in the lake sediments document full freezing of the lake water during the winter time. A general warming trend started around 8.0 ka BP in concert with enhanced biological productivity. Reconstructed mean T_July were equal or up to 1.5 °C higher than today between 6.0 ka and 5.0 ka BP. During the entire late Holocene after 4.8 ka BP, reconstructed mean T_July remained below modern value. Limnological conditions did not change significantly. The inference of a mid-Holocene climate optimum supports scenarios of Holocene climatic changes in the subpolar part of eastern Siberia and indicates climate teleconnections to the North Atlantic realm.

Hydrothermal solutions were examined in a circulation system that started to develop after the 1991 volcanic eruption in the axial segment of the EPR between 9°45'N and 9°52'N. Within twelve years after this eruption, diffusion outflow of hot fluid from fractures in basaltic lavas gave way to focused seeps of hot solutions through channels of hydrothermal sulfide edifices. An example of the field Q demonstrates that from 1991 to 2003 H2S concentrations decreased from 86 to 1 mM/kg, and the Fe/H2S ratio simultaneously increased by factor 1.7. This fact can explain disappearance of microbial mats that were widespread within the fields before 1991. S isotopic composition of H2S does not depend on H2S concentration. This fact testifies rapid evolution of the hydrothermal system in the early years of its evolution. Carbon in CH4 from hot fluid sampled in 2003 is richer in 12C isotope than carbon in fluid from the hydrothermal field at 21°N EPR. It suggests that methane comes to the Q field from more than one source. Composition of particulate matter in hydrothermal solutions indicates that it was contributed by biological material. Experimental solutions with labeled substrates (t<70°C) show evidence of active processes of methane oxidation and sulfate reduction. Our results indicate that, during 12-year evolution of the hydrothermal system, composition of its solutions evolved and approached compositions of solutions in mature hydrothermal systems of the EPR.

Authigenic carbonates in the caldera of an Arctic (72°N) submarine mud volcano with active methane-bearing fluid discharge are formed at the bottom surface during anaerobic microbial methane oxidation. The microbial community consists of specific methane-producing bacteria, which act as methanotrophic ones in conditions of excess methane, and sulfate reducers developing on hydrogen, which is an intermediate product of microbial CH4 oxidation. Isotopically light carbon (aver. d13C = -28.9 per mil) of CO2 produced during CH4 oxidation is the main carbonate carbon source. Heavy oxygen isotope ratio (aver. d18O = 5 per mil) in carbonates is inherited from seawater sulfate. Rapid sulfate reduction (up to 12 mg S/dm**3/day) results in total exhausting of sulfate ion in the upper sediment layer (10 cm). Because of this carbonates can only be formed in surface sediments near the water-bottom interface. Salinity as well as CO3/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios correspond to the field of non-magnesian calcium carbonate precipitation. Calcite is the dominant carbonate mineral in the methane seep caldera, where it occurs in the paragenetic association with barite. Radiocarbon age of carbonates is about 10 Ka.

Respiration rates of 16 calanoid copepod species from the northern Benguela upwelling system were measured on board RRS Discovery in September/October 2010 to determine their energy requirements and assess their significance in the carbon cycle. Individual respiration rates were standardised to a mean copepod body mass and a temperature regime typical of the northern Benguela Current. These adjusted respiration rates revealed two different activity levels (active and resting) in copepodids C5 of Calanoides carinatus and females of Rhincalanus nasutus, which reduced their metabolism during dormancy by 82% and 62%, respectively. An allometric function (Imax) and an energy budget approach were performed to calculate ingestion rates. Imax generally overestimated the ingestion rates derived from the energy budget approach by >75%. We suggest that the energy budget approach is the more reliable approximation with a total calanoid copepod (mainly females) consumption of 78 mg C m-2 d-1 in neritic regions and 21 mg C m-2 d-1 in oceanic regions. The two primarily herbivorous copepods C. carinatus (neritic) and Nannocalanus minor (oceanic) contributed 83% and 5%, respectively, to total consumption by calanoid copepods. Locally, C. carinatus can remove up to 90% of the diatom biomass daily. In contrast, the maximum daily removal of dinoflagellate biomass by N. minor was 9%. These estimates imply that C. carinatus is an important primary consumers in the neritic province of the northern Benguela system, while N. minor has little grazing impact on phytoplankton populations further offshore. Data on energy requirements and total consumption rates of dominant calanoid copepods of this study are essential for the development of realistic carbon budgets and food-web models for the northern Benguela upwelling system.

Physical properties measurements provide a relatively inexpensive and fast way to obtain high-resolution estimates of the variations in sedimentological properties. To better resolve the validity and cause of the geophysical signals measured by the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) shipboard multisensor track (MST) instruments, 223 x 10 cm**3 core samples were collected at 4 cm intervals in Core 167-1016B-17H at the California Margin Conception Transect for the measurements of index properties, carbonate content, and opal content. This core was chosen because hole-to-hole stratigraphic correlation of MST data suggested that Core 17H corresponds to a depth interval that displays the greatest range of amplitude of many physical properties.

The chemical compositions of olivine, plagioclase, pyroxene, and spinel in lavas collected during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 187 in the Australian Antarctic Discordance, Southeast Indian Ridge (41°-46°S, 126°-135°E) were analyzed, and modeling of the theoretical equilibrium petrogenetic conditions between olivine and melt was conducted. The cores of larger olivine phenocrysts, particularly in the isotopic Indian-type mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB), are not equilibrated with melt compositions and are considered to be xenocrystic. Larger plagioclase phenocrysts with compositionally reversed zonation are also xenocrystic. The compositions of primary magma were calculated using a "maximum olivine fractionation" model for primitive MORB that should fractionate only olivine. Olivine compositions equilibrated with calculated primary magma and compositions of calculated primary magma suggest that (1) isotopic Pacific-type MORB is more fractionated than Indian-type MORB, (2) Pacific-type MORB was produced by higher degrees of partial melting than Indian-type MORB, and (3) primary magma for Indian-type MORB was segregated from mantle at 10 kbar (~30 km depth), whereas that for Pacific-type MORB was segregated at 15 kbar (~45 km depth).

Composition of clay minerals in the <0.001 mm size fraction from the uppermost layer of bottom sediments in the northern Amur Bay was determined by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and enrichment of 33 elements in the <0.001 mm and <0.01 mm size fractions of surface sediments from a number of sites at the marginal filter of the Razdol'naya River were studied by ICP-MS. Fe, U, and chalcophile elements occur in the highest concentrations in sediments from all sampling sites within the filter. The bottom sediments are not enriched in trace, alkali, and alkaline earth elements. Maximum concentrations of chemical elements were found in deposits from the brackish part of the marginal filter, perhaps, because of formation of Fe and Mn (Al) hydroxides. Bottom sediments at the boundary between the brackish and marine parts of the filter contain the lowest concentrations of the examined elements.

We investigated the magnetic and paleomagnetic properties of 77 basalt samples from Holes 482, 482C, 482D, 483, 483B, 485, and 485A in order to study the structure and development of the ocean's crust. During the course of this study, we measured the natural remanent magnetization, Jn, and its stability in an alternating magnetic field; the magnetic susceptibility, x; the saturation magnetization, Js; the saturation remanent magnetization, Jrs; the coercivity of maximum remanence, HCR; and the median destructive fields MDFn (for Jn) and MDFs for Jrs. A thermomagnetic analysis for Js and Jrs was also performed; these latter measurements were made on the same samples.
