Neodymium isotopes and concentrations from 11 stations in the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, Florida Straits and close to the mouth of the Orinoco. CTD data (potential temperature, salinity, potential density and oxygen concentration) for the same samples are also reported. Sampling took place during February and March 2009 as part of the Meteor Cruise 78, Leg 1.

Whole-rock basalt samples from the upper half of Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 504B have oxygen-isotope compositions typical of mid-ocean-ridge basalts which have experienced a moderate degree of low-temperature alteration by sea water. By contrast, d18O values in the lower half of the hole correspond to basalts which have experienced almost no detectable oxygen-isotope alteration. These observations suggest that the overall water/rock ratio was lower in the lower half of the drilled crust. A correlation between d18O values and 87Sr/86Sr ratios suggests that the water/rock ratio, rather than temperature variation, was the main factor determining basalt d18O values. Hydrogen-isotope data appear to be consistent with a low water/rock ratio in the lower part of the crust.

The Indian Ocean is an important component of the global thermohaline circulation system, as its western boundary currents feed the Agulhas Current, an integral part of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. However, Indian Ocean intermediate to deep-water variability on glacial-interglacial timescales is still a matter of debate. Here we provide stable carbon and oxygen isotopes and sediment elemental compositions of a sediment core from the edge of the Somali Basin. We demonstrate that throughout the past 600 kyr the intermediate western Indian Ocean was primarily bathed by Southern Ocean sourced Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW). This Southern Ocean sourced water mass enters the Somali Basin via the Amirante Passage or the Mozambique Channel and represents a downstream equivalent of South Atlantic UCDW. We cannot clearly account for the shortterm passage of Red Sea Water (RSW) at 1500 m water depth along the African continental margin, as previously suggested, on glacial-interglacial timescales.

During the latest Messinian, hemipelagic sediments exhibiting precession-induced climate variability were deposited. These are overlain by Pliocene sediments deposited at a much higher sedimentation rate, with much higher and more variable XRF-scanning Zr/Al ratios than the underlying sediment, and that show evidence of winnowing, particle sorting and increasing grain size, which we interpret to be related to the increasing flow of MOW. Pliocene sedimentary cyclicity is clearly visible in both the benthic d18O record and the Zr/Al data and is probably also precessionally controlled. On the basis of these results, we conclude that contouritic sedimentation, associated with weak Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange, began in the Gulf of Cadiz virtually at or shortly after the Miocene-Pliocene boundary, with two contouritic bigradational sandy-beds within the fourth precession cycle after the Miocene-Pliocene boundary.
