The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of strontium-doped neodymium ferrite (Nd1-xSrxFeO3-delta where 0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.4) were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction. The orthorhombic distortion decreases with increasing Sr substitution. The pseudocubic lattice parameter shows a minimum at x=0.3. The thermal expansion curves for x=0.2-0.4 displayed rapid increase in slope at higher temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with Sr content and temperature. The calculated activation energies for electrical conduction decreased with increasing x. The electrical conductivity can be described by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B site and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice. The results indicate two defect domains: for low values of x, the predominant defect is Fe4+ ions, whereas for higher values of x, oxygen vacancies dominate. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Studies on redox supercapacitors employing electronically conducting polymers are of great importance for hybrid power sources and pulse power applications. In the present study, polyaniline (PANI) has been potentiodynamically deposited on stainless steel substrate and characterized in a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). Use of the GPE facilitates a voltage limit of the capacitor to 1 V, instead of 0.75 V in aqueous electrolytes. From charge-discharge studies of the solid-state PANI capacitors, a specific capacitance of 250 F g(-1) has been obtained at a specific power of 7.5 kW kg(-1) of PANI. The values of specific capacitance and specific power are considerably higher than those reported in the literature. High energy and high power characteristics of the PANI are presented. This paper presents a new approach by making use of a hybrid method of using the displacement discontinuity element method and direct boundary element method to model concrete cracking by incorporating fictitious crack model. Fracture mechanics approach is followed using the Hillerborg's fictitious crack model. A boundary element based substructure method and a hybrid technique of using displacement discontinuity element method and direct boundary element method are compared in this paper. In order to represent the process zone ahead of the crack, closing forces are assumed to act in such a way that they obey a linear normal stress-crack opening displacement law. Plain concrete beams with and without initial crack under three-point loading were analyzed by both the methods. The numerical results obtained were shown to agree well with the results from existing finite element method. The model is capable of reproducing the whole range of load-deflection response including strain-softening and snap-back behavior as illustrated in the numerical examples. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. While bonding between d(10) atoms and ions in molecular systems has been well studied, less attention has been paid to interactions between such seemingly closed shell species in extended inorganic solids. In this contribution, we present visualizations of the electronic structures of the delafossites ABO(2) (A = Cu, Ag, Au) with particular emphasis on the nature of d(10)-d(10) interactions in the close packed plane of the coinage metal ion. We find that on going from Cu to Ag to Au, the extent of bonding between A and A increases. However, the structures (in terms of distances) of these compounds are largely determined by the strongly ionic 13,11 0 interaction and for the larger B ions Sc, In and Y, the A atoms are sufficiently well-separated that A-A bonding is almost negligible. We also analyze some interesting differences between Ag and Au, including the larger A-O covalency of the Au. The trends in electronic structure suggest that the Ag and Au compounds are not good candidate transparent conducting oxides. (C) 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. A nonlinear model is developed to numerically simulate dynamic combustion inside a solid rocket motor chamber. Using this model, the phenomena of re-ignition and chuffing are investigated under low-L* conditions. The model consists of two separate submodels (coupled to each other), one for unsteady burning of propellant and the other for unsteady conservation of mass and energy within the chamber. The latter yields instantaneous pressure and temperature within the chamber. The instantaneous burning rate is calculated using a one-dimensional, nonlinear, transient gas-phase model previously developed by the authors. The results presented in this paper show that the model predicts not only the critical L*, but also the various regimes of L*-instabihty. Specifically, the results exhibit (1) amplifying pressure oscillations leading to extinction, and (2) re-ignition after a dormant period following extinction. The re-ignition could be observed only when a radiation heat flux (from the combustion chamber to the propellant surface) was included. Certain high-frequency oscillations, possibly due to intrinsic instability, are observed when the pressure overshoots during re-ignition. At very low values of initial L*, successive cycles of extinction/reignition displaying typical characteristics of chuffing are predicted. Variations of the chuffing frequency and the thickness of propellant burned off during a chuff with L* are found to be qualitatively the same as that reported from experimental observations.

Investigation of the reaction of La2CuO4 with several binary metal oxides in the solid state at elevated temperatures has revealed three different reaction pathways. Reaction of La2CuO4 with strongly acidic oxides such as Re2O7, MoO3, and V2O5 follows a metathesis route, yielding a mixture of products: La3ReO8/La2MoO6/LaVO4 and CuO. Oxides such as TiO2, MnO2, and RuO2 which are not so acidic yield addition products: La2CuMO6 (M = Ti, Mn, Ru). SnO2 is a special case which appears to follow a metathesis route, giving La2Sn2O7 pyrochlore and CuO, which on prolonged reaction transform to the layered perovskite La2CuSnO6. The reaction of La2CuO4 with lower valence oxides VO2 and MoO2, on the other hand, follows a novel redox metathesis route, yielding a mixture of LaVO4/LaCuO2 and La2MoO6/Cu, respectively. This result indicates that it is the redox reactivity involving V-IV + Cu-II --> V-V + Cu-I and Mo-IV + Cu-II --> Mo-VI + Cu-0, and not the acidity of the binary oxide, that controls the nature of the products formed in these cases. The general significance of these results toward the synthesis of complex metal oxides containing several metal atoms is discussed.

Real-time kinetics of ligand-ligate interaction has predominantly been studied by either fluorescence or surface plasmon resonance based methods. Almost all such studies are based on association between the ligand and the ligate. This paper reports our analysis of dissociation data of monoclonal antibody-antigen (hCG) system using radio-iodinated hCG as a probe and nitrocellulose as a solid support to immobilize mAb. The data was analyzed quantitatively for a one-step and a two-step model. The data fits well into the two-step model. We also found that a fraction of what is bound is non-dissociable (tight-binding portion (TBP)). The TBP was neither an artifact of immobilization nor does it interfere with analysis. It was present when the reaction was carried out in homogeneous solution in liquid phase. The rate constants obtained from the two methods were comparable. The work reported here shows that real-time kinetics of other ligand-ligate interaction can be studied using nitrocellulose as a solid support. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Solid, propellants are widely used in modern rockets and missiles. Although the history of solid rockets could be traced to the discovery of gunpowder over a thousand years ago, the technology could be perfected only by the later half of the 20(th) century. The failure of gunpowder rockets was largely due to the unknown consolidating technique of the powder composition. The emergence of large solid propellant motors had, to await the dawn of polymer. science and technology(S&T). Specific syntheses of functionally terminated polymers having cross-linking capability led to the emergence of casting technology of solid composite propellants. This review describes the various polymeric fuel/binder systems used or considered for use in solid, propellants. It includes a brief background, advantages, and shortcomings of the various systems, an account of the currently used binders and a critical survey of the advanced polymers envisaged for future usage. Special emphasis has been laid on recently synthesized polymers having N-N bonds in their structures, and-on the feasibility of developing smokeless propellants based on ammonium nitrate.

Copper(l) complexes of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) with a stoichiometry Cu-2(dppe)(3)(X)(2) [X- = CN- (1), SCN- (2), NO3- (3)] are obtained from direct reactions of CuX and dppe. The complexes are structurally and spectroscopically (NMR and IR) characterized. The structure of the [Cu-2(dPPe)(3)](2+) dication is similar to the structural motif observed in many other complexes with a chelating dppe and a bridging dppe connecting two copper centers. In complexes 1 -3, the anions are confined to the cavity formed by the phosphines which force a monodentate coordination mode despite the predominant bidentate/bridging character of the anions. The coordination angles rather than the thermochemical radii dictate the steric requirement of anions. While the solution behavior of 3, with nitrate, is similar to complexes studied earlier, complexes with pseudohalides exhibit new solution behavior. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The enthalpy increments and the standard molar Gibbs energies of formation-of DyFeO3(s) and Dy3Fe5O12(s) have been measured using a Calvet micro-calorimeter and a solid oxide galvanic cell, respectively. A co-operative phase transition, related to anti-ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transformation, is apparent. from the heat capacity data for DyFeO3 at similar to 648 K. A similar type of phase transition has been observed for Dy3Fe5O12 at similar to 560 K which is related to ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic transformation. Enthalpy increment data for DyFeO3(s) and Dy3Fe5O12(s), except in the vicinity of the second-order transition, can be represented by the following polynomial expressions:{H(0)m(T) - H(0)m(298.15 K)) (Jmol(-1)) (+/-1.1%) = -52754 + 142.9 x (T (K)) + 2.48 x 10(-3) x (T (K))(2) + 2.951 x 10(6) x (T (K))(-1); (298.15 less than or equal to T (K) less than or equal to 1000) for DyFeO3(s), and {H(0)m(T) - H(0)m(298.15 K)} (Jmol(-1)) (+/-1.2%) = -191048 + 545.0 x (T - (K)) + 2.0 x 10(-5) x (T (K))(2) + 8.513 x 10(6) x (T (K))(-1); (208.15 less than or equal to T (K) less than or equal to 1000)for Dy3Fe5O12(s). The reversible emfs of the solid-state electrochemical cells: (-)Pt/{DyFeO3(s) + Dy2O3(s) + Fe(s)}/YDT/CSZ//{Fe(s) + Fe0.95O(s)}/Pt(+) and (-)Pt/{Fe(s) + Fe0.95O(s)}//CSZ//{DyFeO3(s) + Dy3Fe5O12(s) + Fe3O4(s)}/Pt(+), were measured in the temperature range from 1021 to 1250 K and 1035 to 1250 K, respectively. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of solid DyFeO3 and Dy3Fe5O12 calculated by the least squares regression analysis of the data obtained in the present study, and data for Fe0.95O and Dy2O3 from the literature, are given by Delta(f)G(0)m(DyFeO3,s)(kJmol(-1))(+/-3.2)= -1339.9 + 0.2473 x (T(K)); (1021 less than or equal to T (K) less than or equal to 1548)and D(f)G(0)m(Dy3Fe5O12,s) (kJmol(-1)) (+/-3.5) = -4850.4 + 0.9846 x (T (K)); (1035 less than or equal to T (K) less than or equal to 1250) The uncertainty estimates for Delta(f)G(0)m include the standard deviation in the emf and uncertainty in the data taken from the literature. Based on the thermodynamic information, oxygen potential diagram and chemical potential diagrams for the system Dy-Fe-O were developed at 1250 K. 9-Anthryl and 1-pyrenyl terpyridines (1 and 2, respectively), key precursors for the design of novel fluorescent sensors have been synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, mass spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Twisted molecular conformations for each 1 and 2 were observed in their single crystal structures. Energy minimization calculations for the 1 and 2 using the semi-empirical AM1 method show that the 'twisted' conformation is intrinsic to these systems. We observe interconnected networks of edge-to-face CH...pi interactions, which appear to be cooperative in nature, in each of the crystal structures. The two twisted molecules, although having differently shaped polyaromatic hydrocarbon substituents, show similar patterns of edge-to-face CH...pi interactions. The presently described systems comprise of two aromatic surfaces that are almost orthogonal to each other. This twisted or orthogonal nature of the molecules leads to the formation of interesting multi-directional ladder like supramolecular organizations. A combination of edge-to-face and face-to-face packing modes helps to stabilize these motifs. The ladder like architecture in 1 is helical in nature. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

In this paper, a finite-element model is developed in which the nonlinear soil behavior is represented by a hyperbolic relation for static load condition and modified hyperbolic relation, which includes both degradation and gap for a cyclic load condition. Although batter piles are subjected to lateral load, the soil resistance is also governed by axial load, which is incorporated by considering the P-Δ moment and geometric stiffness matrix. By adopting the developed numerical model, static and cyclic load analyses are performed adopting an incremental-iterative procedure where the pile is idealized as beam elements and the soil as elastoplastic spring elements. The proposed numerical model is validated with published laboratory and field pile test results under both static and cyclic load conditions. This paper highlights the importance of the degradation factor and its influence on the soil resistance-displacement (p-y) curve, number of cycles of loading, and cyclic load response.

A new beam element is developed to study the thermoelastic behavior of functionally graded beam structures. The element is based on the first-order shear deformation theory and it accounts for varying elastic and thermal properties along its thickness. The exact solution of static part of the governing differential equations is used to construct interpolating polynomials for the element formulation. Consequently, the stiffness matrix has super-convergent property and the element is free of shear locking. Both exponential and power-law variations of material property distribution are used to examine different stress variations. Static, free vibration and wave propagation problems are considered to highlight the behavioral difference of functionally graded material beam with pure metal or pure ceramic beams.
