La evolución científica queda documentada en publicaciones. Todas contribuyen al enriquecimiento y la transferencia del conocimiento, pero algunas hacen historia o marcan un paso importante en los avances de ramas de la ciencia. En esta sección se presenta la imagen de tapa de algunas obras, documentos y trabajos, y se mencionan además parte de las revistas que difundieron la actividad limnológica de nuestro país.

Los Peces Argentinos de Agua Dulce: Iconografía

En el transcurso del año 2007 se cumplieron cuarenta años de la publicación de la obra Los peces argentinos de agua dulce de Raúl A. Ringuelet, Raúl H. Arámburu y Armonía Alonso de Arámburu, la que representó un hito dentro de la ictiología nacional y regional. Por este motivo, el Programa para el estudio y uso sustentable de la Biota Austral Probiota), como un modesto homenaje a sus autores, quiere rescatar parte de la misma, ya que su reedición total para nosotros es hoy un objetivo imposible de cumplir. Para ello, hemos elegido reproducir su iconografía la cuál esta compuesta de 10 láminas y 37 figuras cuyos autores fueron A. Alonso de Arámburu, Carmen Castellano, Irma Cicchini, María E. Costa, María L. Fuster, E. Maristany, Ana Thörmalen y Carlos. A. Tremouilles. En este documento se agrupan las láminas en una primera sección y posteriormente las figuras, para finalizar con un apéndice que contiene la lista de las especies mencionadas con su sistemática actualizada. Este es otro paso dirigido a la consolidación de nuestra disciplina, ya que manteniendo siempre el recuerdo vivo del pasado lograremos afianzar el presente, lo que nos permitirá planificar con fundamentos nuestro futuro. Tracking the evolution of waste recycling research using overlay maps of science

Tracking the evolution of research in waste recycling science (WRS) can be valuable for environmental agencies, as well as for recycling businesses. Maps of science are visual, easily readable representations of the cognitive structure of a branch of science, a particular area of research or the global spectrum of scientific production. They are generally built upon evidence collected from reliable sources of information, such as patent and scientific publication databases. This study uses the methodology developed by Rafols et al. (2010) to make a “double overlay map” of WRS upon a basemap reflecting the cognitive structure of all journal-published science, for the years 2005 and 2010. The analysis has taken into account the cognitive areas where WRS articles are published and the areas from where it takes its intellectual nourishing, paying special attention to the growing trends of the key areas. Interpretation of results lead to the conclusion that extraction of energy from waste will probably be an important research topic in the future, along with developments in general chemistry and chemical engineering oriented to the recovery of valuable materials from waste. Agricultural and material sciences, together with the combined economics, politics and geography field, are areas with which WRS shows a relevant and ever increasing cognitive relationship.

Helping ourselves: the role of self-help groups in poverty alleviation through aquaculture

Self-help groups (SHGs) are ways for farmers and fishers, especially those who are poor, to come together and work together. They can be a useful entry point for outsiders, promote a supportive local environment, strengthen voices in decision-making and in negotiations with more powerful forces, increase the effectiveness of local actions, and provide easier access to micro-credit and other resources and services. This case study describes a rural aquaculture development context, in India, the development of SHGs and the concept of a ‘one-stop aqua shop’, set up and run by a federation of self-help groups in Kaipara village, West Bengal (a pilot state along with Jharkhand and Orissa). It outlines testing new ways to share information, as part of a series of revised procedures and institutional arrangements for service delivery recommended by farmers and fishers and prioritized by government, with support from the Department of International Development, London (DFID) Natural Resources Support Programme (NRSP) and the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) to the Support to Regional Aquatic Resources Management (STREAM) Initiative (10 p.)
